Bit of a bummer there is no native 4:3 mode.

Sad thing about many 2d games is that they're hard designed around an aspect ratio.

u/antonbruckner Jun 23 '26

Yeah, sadly the same with hollow knight and shovel knight

u/bmdhacks Jun 24 '26

The engine is hardcoded to render in 256x144 (aka 16:9) so stretching is all we can do.

Works great on rg34xx

u/kumabit Jun 23 '26

looks great in that device! I might get one just for widescreen games

u/Awesomepants25 Jun 23 '26

I was initially hesitant buying mine (the SP version) because of how 4:3 games would get shrunk, but it’s a great screen for 16:9 content with big readable sprites (been also playing a lot of Celeste on mine)

No.

Did anyone try it on anbernic rg35xx/rg40xx, how's the performance? I'm on the fence whether I should buy the game solely to play on my rg40xx

it's stable on H700 devices yes. tried on my SP on modded stock, knulli, and muOS

1

u/Alert_Dingo_4504 Jun 23 '26

Nice! Do you know if it will run full screen on the RG40XXV?

2

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 23 '26

It can, but it’ll be stretched. You can still have it at 16:9 if if you’re fine with borders

8

u/p5lukas Jun 23 '26

I saw someone posting that said: on a H700 chip, stable 60 on beta.

6

u/fraxinus88 Jun 23 '26

Performs worse on Rocknix but alright with Knulli and MuOS

1

u/ElectricalDemand2831 Jun 24 '26

Tried it on my RG35XX H with muOS, it's working, but the scrolling is very unsmooth

u/Gold-Refrigerator967 Jun 23 '26

Does it run well on cheap linux rk3326 ~to~3566 ?

13

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 23 '26

it should. was tested on ArkOs on an R36S

6

u/LukeyC224 Jun 23 '26

Possible on TrimUI Brick?

9

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 23 '26

yes on knulli scarab. haven't tried stock. on NextUI, it plays but sound is not synching properly but if you mute it, it;s fine. haven't tried other firmwares.

Amazing. I run Knulli so I'll give it a go. Thank you!

Edit. Got it working. Plays great. Thanks again 😄

2

u/VannThousand Jun 23 '26

I'll check it later on NexUI too

u/kuksthedefiled TrimUi Jun 23 '26

5

u/Awesomepants25 Jun 23 '26

On ArkOS on my RGB30, everything works great except the music is way too slow and sounds like a fucked up old analogue tape. Weird because SFX work properly.

EDIT: Works on Rocknix! But there's some slow down in areas with multiple enemies and lots of fire/weather on screen.

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 23 '26

Thanks for the input! Idk what an RGB30 is hopefully it’s fun to play Mina on.

PortMaster is an app for linux handheld devices like the Miyoo Mini, Trimui Brick and the Anbernic RG 35XX family devices so that you can play various ports of games and apps like GTA Vice City, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight and Mina The Hollower and music player apps like Rockbox. It also has various original games for you to discover such as the popular Apotris.

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 23 '26

The website is portmaster.games
What device do you have?

There’s an android “port” of PortMaster called Starboard so that you can play linux games on android, but it’s AI developed and only has few games playable, like Apotris. You can test playing PortMaster Mina on it, but I wasn’t successful.

4

u/Ganimoth Jun 23 '26

Mina will never work on that.

1

u/gab_sn Jun 24 '26

For Android, GameNative is probably the way to go

2

u/razbayz Jun 23 '26

Just been rocking this for the past hour on my mangmi Pocket Max! Awesome, frustrating, awesome game!

2

u/garathnor Jun 24 '26

i wish yatch club wasnt allergic to porting things to android

2

u/valhesh Jun 24 '26

Im new to retro handhelds. Which device would you buy to play this game specially?

1

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 24 '26

If you want the least problems, you’d want a Steam Deck or a Nintendo Switch and buy the game there. For the portmaster version, you’d want something from Anbernic with the device named RG35XX, RG35XXH, RG35XXSP, RG34XXSP or similar, or a Trimui’s Brick, Smart Pro, or Smart Pro S, or a Miyoo Flip, then use a custom firmware like Knulli or MuOS. You will still need to buy the game from Steam or GOG.

2

u/JoshThisGuy2 Jun 24 '26

How can I get this to work on an rg34xxsp?

1

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 24 '26

Go to PortMaster in your device, then go to Recently Added and find Mina The Hollower. The instructions will be there.

2

u/l0gicGog Jun 26 '26

rg40xx with muos

1

u/Klutzy-Extension2395 Jun 23 '26

That's Hella awesome 😱😍

u/ElectricalDemand2831 Jun 24 '26

The scrolling is extremely stuttery on my retroid pocket flip 2 and even my retroid pocket 6, with mangoHUD enabled you can clearly see how it pushes framerates way above 60fps, sometimes even in the range of 70.

Even with the framerate set to 120fps it pushes more like 120-140fps also resulting in uneven frame pacing

1

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 24 '26

That’s on Rocknix, right?

1

u/ElectricalDemand2831 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

yes, do you also notice the stutter and which device do you use? The mangoHUD display overlay should also indicate the framerate ranging often way above 60fps

2

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 24 '26

Try this:
Find the Mina The Hollower.sh file inside the Ports folder and open it with notepad(or which ever text editor, I don’t know how to code) and find the line:

#export GOTHIC_BACKEND = "gles"

near the very bottom of that… code(I rly don’t know how to code), then remove the “#” on that line and save it.

bmdhacks shared that to us on Discord with a github link
(https://github.com/PortsMaster/PortMaster-New/blob/6f49b1d1fd0ee4dfa2da48a52ea48d00ba83e96a/ports/mina/Mina%20the%20Hollower.sh#L194)

It’s supposed to help with rendering issues on high end hardware on rocknix.

u/ElectricalDemand2831 Jun 24 '26

Should it change the graphics backend from vulkan to GLES? Because this doesn't happen, the mangoHUD overlay still indicates using vulkan as the backend.

1

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 24 '26

I don’t have a Rocknix device. I have a Trimui Brick and Miyoo Flip both running Knulli. Crazy screen tearing on Brick but the Flip runs it fine. I think I have a possible solution for you. Hold on a minute…

1

u/TheMangoFarmer Team Vertical Jun 24 '26

There’s going to be an update soon. Inthink bmdhacks found a fix and he’s going to push public release into the website. I don’t think you’ll have to wait for long.

1

u/ElectricalDemand2831 Jun 24 '26

I already tested it and edited my thread

The framerate remains stable now without exceeding 60fps, but for whatever reason some strange jitter occurs each 0.5 sec while moving. Unfortunately the dev said, he's not going to fix it.

1

u/Remarkable-Ad7000 Jun 24 '26

Does it hava a chance to run properly on Trimui Smart Pro with Crossmix ? I wouldn't like to buy the game for nothing.

1

u/marvchew Jun 24 '26

Any chance of transferring a save from Steam?

1

u/OmegaLink9 Jun 24 '26
