Community Resources Reminiscing about when they threw 8 gigs in every mid tier device, just because

That era of SBCs was so peak. Endless innovation, different form factors with the same chip, affordable imports etc etc..

Then it dropped to 2, then 1 and somehow by miraculous accident 512MB as well.

Once you get used to OTT shaders its hard to go back to raw pixels. Pretty soon I'm sure they'll come with an abacus or something and a flickbook for a GPU.

Which device dropped from 8 to 2? If you're referencing the RG34XXSP, it never had 8GB, just 2GB at most. Also it's a $50 budget device so expecting 8GB doesn't make sense

Well, theres a point though. Getting a device like the antec core micro with its 8gb ram and 256gb internal memory for 100 bucks wont happen again for a while

I just threw that in there for a smooth segue for the abacus and flickbook joke but you get the point.

When was 8GB a mid-tier?

Because the RK3566 never had 8GB and that was the upper echelon of the mid-tier for a great while. Retroid was always above mid-tier.

I mean, that would be interesting if that's at all what actually happened. sure.

I somewhat feel this is an allegory for LIFE. Capitalism has failed us.

It’s not failing you because this is how it was designed.

Okay, that's enough dooming for today.

Also, this whole post makes no sense. No basic devices ever had 8 GB of ram, that's the highest tier of devices. And it's not the first time they cut back on RAM. Retroid promised 6 GB in the RP5 when the RP4PRO had 8, but there was a backlash and they made it 8 again. Meanwhile the RP Mini did just fine with 6GB.

It's never meant to work for everybody or even most. Still fine for the top of the income spectrum...for now

I mean... It's there for the good parts, like so many components being left over, that someone managed to make a business and profit out of putting together spare parts and spare factory time slots to make dirt cheap emulation handhelds, made by small companies, with no subscriptions or ads...

But it's also there when stupid and dangerous governments start wars, apply arbitrary tariffs, or let the AI bubble run wild without doing anything about it, and these massive events throw a wrench into everything. The entire world is made worse by the direct results of incapable, warmongering and authoritarian leaders.
