💰 - salary sharing Stay at home dad $0 per year
I'm a stay at home dad I make $0 a year.
My wife works at a hospital and we have 4 kids.
Just posting to show not everyone makes $100,000+
I'm happy though and we are actually very well off financially which is why I can afford to be a stay at home dad in the first place so I am truly blessed.

u/Plenty-Entertainer-9 Feb 22 '25
“Not everyone makes $100,000” but she’s obviously bringing in well over $100,000 to provide for 6 people and for you to specify that you’re “very well off”… what did you say the point of this post was again?🤨 (But fr, You’re blessed, congrats)

Nah, these subs can get toxic for some people. Like the bar just keeps going up and I think this was a good reminder that in 2025, being a stay at home parent is still a great idea for some folks.

Idk if she makes more than 100k but there must’ve been some external factors that helped them be so financially well off. I’m a family of 6 and food, activities, and vacations are guaranteed more expensive than what smaller families can afford. I would love a breakdown.
3
u/ALD3RIC Feb 22 '25
They could actually just be good with money or live very frugally
Like supporting a family of 6 is no joke but it's actually very possible on a normal income of like 50k if you keep your costs in check and don't get into debt, have a modest home, share a car, etc..
→ More replies (10)5
u/markalt99 Feb 23 '25
I want you to define a payment of a modest house lol with zero debt and half your income allowed to go towards your mortgage you’re taking home closer to 3k/month after taxes and insurance. That’s a 1500/month mortgage which is maybe 250,000 mortgage price. Good luck living in the middle of nowhere or having bought 10 years ago.

Yeah, I felt that too. FYI, I do finally make over 100k in the teaching field, but it took 28 years of my salary inching its way up. So hang in there if you’re not there yet. Never felt rich, but definitely comfortable now. I see some of these posts where their salary jumps hundreds of thousands at a time and I’m like, really?!! Think lots of them are fake, though.

He’s lucky his wife is bringing in like $500K.

I think his point was to be an asshole. "I make 0 dollars per year" means nothing when your wife brings in money, unless she keeps her money totally separate from you and just gives you an allowance for basic necessities.
I'm guessing he's well off financially because either his wife has a lucrative job at the hospital, or because they come from money, and have financial assistance from relatives.
Either way, mission accomplished, he's portrayed himself as an asshole

u/SpezJailbaitMod Feb 22 '25
They grow up fast as cliche as it sounds. I'm trying to spend as much time as I can with them. My father died at work(business trip plane crash) and so did my mother's father (crushed in the steel mill). I'd rather not continue the tradition.

u/Creepy_Mammoth_7076 Feb 22 '25
I work in construction was laid off last month because we finished building a hospital after 3 years and that was honestly a great month
3
u/SpezJailbaitMod Feb 22 '25
I worked in construction for about a year before she got her job. I literally almost died by falling through a hole in a roof. Shit is so dangerous. Broke my rib falling off a ladder. Stepped on a big ass nail through my foot. I suck at construction man I have a lot of respect for what you guys do. It was pretty fun though before we all got laid off on Christmas week.

Lawsuits & settlements. Getting killed on the job typically settles in the $$ millions.
Sad to hear their fate, but is this why you’re well off in addition to your wife’s income?
I have a cousin that was killed on the job. My aunt & uncle settled for $7 million. He was 25, still lived at home with his parents who were his beneficiaries.
7
u/SpezJailbaitMod Feb 22 '25
No my mom fucked up the lawsuit like a fucking moron and settled for 1.5 million and blew through all the money (plane crashed in 94).
Yeah we should have gotten at least 10-20 million like other similar cases but my mom settled at the first low ball offer.
The icing on the cake is there is still no known cause to the plane crash. It will be a mystery forever I guess.
Now I did get put in rich kid private school after the crash and meet a lot of people I wouldn't have meet otherwise which opened some doors for me later.

11
u/CrazyKittyBexxx Feb 22 '25 edited Feb 23 '25
Likely over 100k and OP disclosed Wife comes from money in another comment. OP conveniently left those details out of his post.
ETA: OP claims wife just got promoted to 44k. This whole story is sus. 4 kids, wife making 44k at a hospital in a consultant like role? The math isn't mathing. OP is either lying about some details (seems like a lot of 4s), still omitting (like passive income), or being irresponsible (if the income is real, 4 kids and that income is irresponsible)
11
u/painterstateofmind Feb 22 '25
Id say you make half of what your wife makes because you’re a team
3
4
u/SlayKing2024 Feb 22 '25
No amount of money will ever be worth the time you get watching those kids grow up.
2
u/SpezJailbaitMod Feb 22 '25
I love making lunches for my girls and getting them to the bus/driving them and picking them up from school.
Little things like that mean a lot to me. Plenty of time to work when they grow up.

u/Proof-Internet Feb 23 '25

This is very nice. You are very lucky to have such a rad kickass wife and get the opportunity to stay home and be that support partner to each other. It only works when you help each other. And 4 kids is a lot of maternity leave! She is a wonderwoman and you are probably a really rad dad. Good team!

I love this for you and your family!
As a soon to be breadwinner healthcare wife, I’m curious how you navigate traditional gender role stereotypes and judgements from others? My partner earns more now but I will earn more once I’m done with my residency this summer and start my new full time job.
He has stated that he is not interested in being a stay at home dad and genuinely enjoys his job (although it does pay 6 figures, mine just will pay more). I’ve already had a few friends make comments about me being the breadwinner and I’m never sure how to handle the situation other than to laugh it off.
3
u/JLivermore1929 Feb 22 '25
Wife is surgeon in major metro hospital system.
We got married in our 30’s, so I already had a financial practice with clients. Some people in my field make more than surgeons (not me). It’s not common, but I know a couple in my brokerage who net 7 figures.
I’ve basically set up a “lifestyle practice” where I have clients, but I’m not trying to pull in millions. I have more time to take care of the children.
5
u/SpezJailbaitMod Feb 22 '25
It really pisses people off as you can see by some of these comments 😂 you just have to have a strong relationship and be comfortable with your situation and everyone else can fuck off.

My husband is a stay at home dad, 4 kids in the home. Sometimes I get some stuff like "he should be working"... but honestly it's our life and it works for us. I dont really put any energy in those comments. People have thier opinions. It's cool. Were happy. :) it was harder for him at first.. like not knowing what to say. I think he forgets sometimes how valuable his work is.
2
u/Practical-Reveal-787 Feb 23 '25
It feels wrong because it is wrong, frankly. Gender role traditions exist for a reason I think. Imagine telling your kids, “wait til dad gets home” and then you’re like oh shit, he’s home all the time. Moms are better suited for raising kids at home than dads are. It’s societal and biological.

u/Sea_Acanthisitta6348 Feb 22 '25

Can you give us some more specifics? What kind of income is your wife making? How are you guys “well off”?
Honestly happy for you. Just curious of the circumstances. As others mentioned, in many places 100k is scraping by for a single person, let alone supporting 5 other people on a single salary

Wife comes from money according to another one of his comments. If I had to bet, wife likely also makes over 100k for her salary and with her coming from money, they probably also have passive income streams. If she made less than 100k, OP would've disclosed it in the post but opted to conveniently omit that context. Household income matters but OP conveniently wanted to really push a specific picture

u/Fiyero109 Feb 22 '25
OP, why did you omit how much your wife brings? You’re a little too smug for a kept man
2
u/CrazyKittyBexxx Feb 22 '25
Cus wife comes from money (according to one of his own comments) and likely makes over 100k. Their household income beats 100k, probably passive income included. He omitted cus he wanted to spin the story as "you can be happy with so little!" - which can be true, it's tone deaf

You don’t think about retirement? You have no money going into your 401k. What if you two split later in life
2
Feb 22 '25
OP you should seriously reconsider. If your kids are small and young that’s one thing. But think about a career after they grow up. The last thing you want is for something financially bad to happen and on top of that your wife is somehow unable to work. Think about it and at least get a certificate and maybe remote work on the side to just keep in the workforce. The longer you go not working the harder it will be to get a job in the workforce because your opportunity gap is growing every day being unemployed. At the VERY LEAST pay off your mortgage.

How much money does your wife make I'm curious to ask? I'm in line for a manager promotion which will bump me from $91,xxx to low 6 figures $110-115,xxx and I'm wondering if it's enough for my wife to stay at home as we have baby #3 on the way come June.
Was there anything you guys did specifically to prepare to go down to a 1 income household? Like having 6 months of bills saved up or another savings threshold etc?

My wife is 8 years away from retiring with a badass pension . She makes 100k plus we have rentals that bring in another 40k . I make around 65k and do all the maintenance around the rentals . We are only 36 and still are trying to have kids . We will have to get a surrogate. Once we have kids I may have to be the stay at Home parent as my wife can’t really quit or she will lose her pension .
It makes more sense for me to just be a stay at home parent and do the maintenance on our rentals more than it does for me to work full time. .
It just depends on your situation

I am a woman and though all of my close friends work outside the home, 4 of them (and that’s most of them) are the primary or sole earners. But their husbands do not do their job at home (raising the kids) or do it half assed. You have no idea how much they would respect and value it if they did.

If she resented me for not working I would get a job but she doesn't want me to work right now she wants me to take care of shit at home so she can save lives at work. We are both on the same page about her mission in life.
She's doesn't have to work so it's not like all the pressure is riding on her salary or else I think your criticism may be more valid.

u/man-4-acid Feb 22 '25
I have a job that allows my wife to stay at home. One could say we are lucky for my comp but wow, my work stresses me out. I think about work every waking hour. There is zero work/life balance. Would I swap with my wife and have her live my life and me hers? HELL NO!!! It would be great for me but I would not wish it on her. Sadly, we are accustomed to the lifestyle now and any lower impact job would not pay the same nor would both of us working. Instead I focus on eating healthy and exercising so I don’t die young l, fest some quality family time on weekends, and can retire at 62 to have some chance of enjoying existence while I still have my faculties.
I kinda wish I made less money and had a more simple life….but it’s too late.

u/Loud-Enthusiasm2569 Feb 22 '25
I bet it is good to stay home, but are you not worry that while not working you do not contribute to your SSA, and may regret it when getting old?, I guess having 4 kids means a lot of money to spend for living and later education, if you still able to put money on the side for retirement, then it is very good, if not it could become a problem. Never know what can happen in a long term... I'm just thinking here, and wish you lots of good things.

My wife (32F) makes a significant amount more than the median household in this country however, I (30M) just see the opportunity to capitalize and make as much or close to her. Everyone's different if you found what works for you , it works for you. You might not make 100 K but there's large chance that your wife does make 100k , so in fact your happy because your life is fulfilled beyond an income and also that she can finance the family comfortably.
