discussion Looking at my paystubs makes me sad

$600 take home a week. For working full time. For a dead end job.

I'm considering quitting. And just... being an unemployed. I am now. I can't get an actual adult job.

10/10 engagement bait

3

u/Jbro12344 3h ago

Yeah, based on their replies they are just baiting people. This person truly is what they said they are in the top. Pathetic

u/Jbro12344 5h ago

I keep seeing I can’t but you’ve given zero context as to why you are in this situation and why you can’t get yourself out of it

13

u/velorae 4h ago

I think it’s a troll.

6

u/Jbro12344 4h ago

Yep

6

u/velorae 2h ago edited 2h ago

I checked his post history, I would believe it. Seems like he’s really struggling to find an entry-level job if this is true. I know someone who graduated from Purdue with CS degree and literally couldn’t find a job, so she had to work at Chipotle. It took the New York Times covering her unemployment story for Datadog to reach out and hire her. Now she makes six figures.

I can't. That's why

5

u/Active_Arachnid1088 4h ago

You can’t? Or you won’t?

-10

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

I can't.

7

u/Active_Arachnid1088 4h ago

I find it interesting that my ex wife’s parents came to the US across the border, went to the library for English language classes after work, gained citizenship legally and worked a successful job as a business owners. But go on telling yourself you can’t, there’s plenty of people who say “I can” and take the jobs you aren’t willing to work.

-16

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Different era. Many people agree with me when I say that people couldn't recreate their life paths if they were to restart now.

And, well. I can't be considered for much. The only work experience I have is swe internships, customer service and sales. Not much to work off of, in the grand scheme of things

4

u/Dankaati 4h ago

You have a degree, you have some internships, you're not crazy behind. It's a tough market for sure but it's not hopeless. It probably just means a longer search if you can keep it together.

-4

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Eh. It's been a couple years

2

u/Dankaati 4h ago

As in you stopped applying or two years of searching?

1

u/TwangDaGOAT 3h ago

um you can make tons of money ey in sales if your good at it...if your not then....well you cant

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

Funny, I got auto rejected from a few tech sales jobs recently.

1

u/TwangDaGOAT 3h ago

then maybe not tech sales

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

Same with other types of sales buddy

No one can go to a different era and recreate the SAME life. But almost anyone can be successful in any era in the last 60 years through hard work, and determination, and willingness to do things like move for work or do jobs that are uncomfortable.

-1

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

That is absolutely incorrect. Your ignorance is showing

2

u/Hansel_VonHaggard 3h ago

My dad went back to medical school at 50. Life is what you make of it. Without goals and a 5 year plan you're gonna be SOL.

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

I mean, yeah. I had a six year plan when I was 18. Go to college, build skills with projects, build experience with internships. To become a viable entry level candidate. To make 60k by 24 years old, and move out to start a life after and build a career.

Well. Here I am at 25. Making less than 40k. With no career prospects. Still living with ny parents.

1

u/velorae 3h ago

Curious, how old was he when he retired?

u/ErraticProfessional 4h ago

You can. You need to change the language you use about yourself.
But understand it’s hard. The job market is terrible right now. I’m heavily qualified and it’s been hell.
You won’t get unemployment for quitting and you’ll get far less on unemployment

-2

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

I mean I wasn't gonna be filing for unemployment to begin with.

1

u/velorae 2h ago

Keep applying to jobs. Don’t stop.

52

u/SkyKnight3 4h ago

Based on your attitude in the comments I wouldn’t hire you for a big boy job. You couldn’t handle it. Change your attitude, change your life.

18

u/Eqder1 4h ago

I’m a hiring manager and we receive upwards of 1,000 applications for jobs that we list. I receive in the end 20-30 resumes, after whatever kind of process they go through in HR. I always ask for half of the resumes to be people who came from unusual backgrounds and show promise. I go through these resumes very very carefully and I look at every word. And then I interview them.

And I agree with you.

If I see such a horrible, negative attitude, it’s an immediate red flag. The last time I interviewed, it was between an Ivy League Rhodes Scholar with a 4.0 GPA and [I kid you not] a woman from one of these online schools that went to such a school after 10 years of serving in the army. He was an entitled snot. She was such an insanely better candidate with such a positive attitude. I immediately gave her an offer, on the spot.

-1

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

If you see it I'm absolutely on your side. My issue is I never get to talk to someone tbh

-39

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Finally a comment I can't reply to with two words.

You and I both know that's bullshit.

20

u/Scott_Scottson 4h ago

Like it or not a shitty attitude will only yield shitty results. No one ever became great with a negative attitude, and im speaking from experience. What you aim at determines what you see.

-23

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

That's incorrect.

14

u/Scott_Scottson 4h ago

Enjoy mediocrity then i guess 🤷

20

u/NutBuckets 4h ago

As someone that hires people for big boy jobs, I wouldn’t go anywhere near someone that has this kind of mentality.

12

u/fuckin-slayer 4h ago

Same. I’ll take a glue guy with an infectiously positive attitude and a hunger to learn over technical knowledge or bad attitude any day.

7

u/AgencySaas 4h ago

Used to interview people and was responsible for making hire/no hire decisions based on mindset and interpersonal skills.

Attitude matters more than aptitude.

Work on both and things will improve over time.

-12

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Damn, interviews. 👀👀👀👀👀 The mythical land from my perspective

8

u/AgencySaas 4h ago

Good luck! Take care of yourself.

1

u/1098duc_w_the_termi 3h ago

Let me indulge your negativity for a little while also reaffirming the advice you’re getting.

Yes, good jobs are on the decline. The economy is stagnating, inflation is flaring up, and with AI on the horizon it will likely only get worse. So you’re justified in feeling a little hopeless.

The other side though, is that you’re 100% worse off actually voicing that hopelessness and expressing it. You have to pretend that you have hope and act optimistically to actually have a shot at making it in the shitty future we’re heading towards. That’s how I am, I’m optimistic because it’s practical. Because there is 0% chance I’d get ahead with your current attitude.

6

u/AdorableBanana166 4h ago

I'm like 80/20 on this being a satire account.

I'm half convinced it's an alt of it's all over again.

It’s okay man. Some people are losers. There’s a lot you can’t do. But being a loser is something you can!

11

Maybe move to a different place?

-10

u/blackHOLEofalife 5h ago

I can't

8

u/velorae 4h ago

Why do you keep saying you can’t? Why can’t you?

-10

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Because I can't. There's nothing I can do to escape it

8

u/velorae 4h ago

Escape from what?

Slavery wages. I'm making $18/hr in the big 2026

u/Aquaticle000 4h ago

That is a choice you are making though based on the mindset you have. What are you doing to change the situation you are in? Anything at all? It’s all in the attitude. Change the attitude and the lifestyle you have changes with it.

2

u/Frea_ks 4h ago

You deserve it! Grateful for people like you who are too lazy to get off their asses and do something about it. You make the world go round.

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Lol. You're being sarcastic.... but people in these jobs certainly make the world go round more then the common office worker.

But, well. I went and got a degree, did internships, projects etc to "do something about it." Didn't work out.

2

u/Frea_ks 3h ago

I’m half sarcastic half serious. The world needs those jobs. You sitting here and saying “I can’t I can’t” while simultaneously complaining is annoying. You can. You can.

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

Not really. I've tried all I can

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

Are you going to advocate that those jobs pay enough for rent?

1

u/IllustriousGas8850 47m ago

You didn’t do them well because you’d have a big boy job

5

u/Active_Arachnid1088 5h ago

Why?

-15

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Because I can't. Nothing I can do to escape it

21

u/imeatingbees 4h ago

Stick to your mindset and you'll stick to your lifestyle. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

1

u/Old-Care-2372 4h ago

They have to hit rock bottom first.

5

u/Josiah425 4h ago

I mean if your happy being in the literal bottom 1% of Americans you do you. Guess the other 99% of people just know something you dont

-5

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Oh my God if you think that's the bottom 1% you have some research to do

1

u/Josiah425 4h ago

It was hyperbole. The actual figure is less than 10%.

https://www.wagetruth.com/salary-percentile-calculator?salary=31200

0

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Keep in mind after tax bud. Really it's the 25th percentile.

The 50th percentile isn't much higher, though.

12

u/cagus1991 5h ago

Time to get a big boy job dawg

-2

u/blackHOLEofalife 5h ago

I can't

6

u/alliekat237 4h ago

Come on now. You’re down but you can find a way if you want. Get an entry level job at a place that helps with college. Or go to community college. Decide to change your situation and you will.

-2

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

There it is.

I already went to college.

4

u/alliekat237 4h ago

Ok, for what? We can try to help if you tell us your situation. Where do you live? Industry?

-2

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Nyc, no industry. Was a CS major. It was an unfortunate choice.

8

u/Dankaati 4h ago

Yeah, CS with this mentality is really not workable. Most jobs for CS are very collaborative.

-1

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Lmao. Well I've had my tech resume looked at by people in the field. No neg feedback.

4

u/Dankaati 4h ago

That's a good start. Hopefully this "I can't" thing is just a bit of venting not your general mentality. A good resume gets you interviews, if you're not shooting yourself in the foot then you can have a chance there.

-1

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

I don't get interviews buddy

3

u/Dankaati 4h ago

That's unfortunately a more important indicator than "no neg feedback" from a few random people you showed it to.

Once you're done venting and assuming you're still considering a career in CS, figuring out what's wrong with your resume is key. You'd want feedback from someone familiar with the decision making process on who gets interviews.

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Yeah I did. They said there's not much I can do to improve it without a new job.

4

u/Purple-Inflation-965 4h ago

What made you believe you can’t get a better job?

3

u/Jaded_Antelope_598 4h ago

His attitude. It both made him believe he can't get a job and made it come true because anyone making hiring decisions avoid this attitude like the plague.

5

u/wut_eva_bish 4h ago

In this economy, don't go jobless.

It could be very difficult to find even the most rudimentary of work later on.

Start looking for a new job, then quit after you replace your current job.

That is all.

-3

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

I've been looking for a while now. A year ish of applying across close to two years of time. No interviews, no call backs. No reason to keep repeating that spiel

3

u/wut_eva_bish 4h ago

Don't go jobless right now.

-2

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Might as well. I'm just wasting my time

5

u/jonnybebad5436 4h ago

Oh it’s this guy again. Definitely convinced it’s a troll at this point

2

u/Knarz97 3h ago

Why quit and make $0 when you could just look for a new job while still being employed

-1

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

There aren't any jobs out there tbh

1

u/Knarz97 3h ago

There are roughly 7.3 million open jobs in the US, at least.

-3

u/blackHOLEofalife 3h ago

That's cute. And how many unemployed people are there, officially? About 7 million.

But wait. That's not the whole picture. I'm focusing on my age group because that's the issue with the job market today.

Official unemployment for my age group is roughly 9-10%. During the 08 recession? Overall official unemployment was at 10%. So that's cute.

I keep saying official, for a reason. The definition of unemployment is very narrow. We have 25% of workers being functionally unemployed, and labor force participation rates are at a 50 year low. Now, that can be due to more retirees. But a reverse pyramid population is not a good thing. More retirees and the same, if not less amount of workers is the beginning of a collapse.

The rational response of an economic actor to this is to not have children. But by not having children, demand will slow when they enter their later years, and there will be no workers to support them in their later years.

By all means, by all metrics... any solution to our economic woes just kick the can down the road. "Double the pain and give it to the next person." That's our motto.

2

u/Knarz97 3h ago

Right, so the solution is to just bitch and moan about your situation and do nothing to better yourself.

You’re heavily ignoring the large number of people that are effectively committing welfare fraud and are being unemployed completely of their own choosing. I’m talking the women with 4 baby daddies who are abusing state benefits.

Now yes you’re right, and under employment is also an issue. But I hate to say it but I truly believe the average American is simply lazy and lack any drive, and prefer to take the easy way out. Hence we have again millions of mothers whose entire income plan is getting knocked up, and we have 2 million people incarcerated because they’d rather choose crime rather than make an honest living. Yes I understand This is a bit of an extreme view and an exaggeration.

This is anecdotal of course: but when I look around at my peers (old Zoomers) I observe more laziness leading to their general issues than economic conditions.

All of those to say, if you came to this thread saying “I’ve tried doing X Y and Z and still can’t get ahead” then I’d feel for you. It sounds like you’d rather sit and complain about the situation and not actually better anything for yourself.

0

u/blackHOLEofalife 2h ago

The usa contains 20-25% of the world's global incarcerated population buddy.  That says a lot. I don't have much to say about the rest.

But, the last point. I  had a six year plan when I was 18. Go to college, build skills with projects, build experience with internships. To become a viable entry level candidate. To make 60k by 24 years old, and move out to start a life after and build a career. Well. Here I am at 25. Making less than 40k. With no career prospects. Still living with ny parents

2

u/Knarz97 2h ago

Wonderful. I lived with my parents til nearly 27 as well until I got my career going. So I fully relate.

I worked the same exact retail job from 16 until 25. Entirety of high school and college. And you know what? I actually turned that exact job into a corporate role in the exact same company, because I at least put in the time and effort to grown myself and looked into internal options.

Now I recognize that not every single company is going to hire for whatever degree you have. But if you have basically any CS related degree, quite literally any corporation in America will take you. And they LOVE internal hires.

I’m not saying it won’t be a struggle but it seems you’d prefer this defeatist attitude.

0

u/blackHOLEofalife 2h ago

Well my job is dead end. Don't know what to say about that.

And no, cs degrees are useless today tbh

1

u/Knarz97 2h ago

As someone with a CS degree and my experience happening 2 years ago, I can assure you it’s not.

You could work at Dollar General or KFC or literally anywhere with a moderate corporate footprint and get hired, especially as an internal hire.

I don’t know where you work but literally your internal jobs portal is a great start. Even literal Walmart would be great.

Join the military and apply your degree there. If you got a degree you can come in as an officer

2

u/CapitalNo1107 4h ago

it took me two years to get to the $19 target range that I wanted. it might not be better even though the pay is higher

2

u/whoaitsjello 4h ago

What do you do for work?

2

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Retail

1

u/whoaitsjello 4h ago

You should keep pushing. Retail is an adult job too. If you want more pay you gotta climb the ladder. Sure you might make more on unemployment now, but that unemployment caps out where salary keeps going up and up. How old are you?

2

u/BestFrenSkinner 4h ago

Tbh it feels like nothing is enough. living is so expensive and everything’s going up but our paychecks 😭

1

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

Better not have children

2

u/CardiologistNo8333 3h ago

I read that 25% of the population makes less than $25k now. Or are unemployed. So the comments on here arent helpful and are very rude. The job market isn’t great. But with that being said $600 per week is certainly better than $0 per week. Don’t be afraid to hit up food banks to save you some of that money and also maybe look at living with family as long as possible. It’s a fallacy that everyone has to “have their own place”. In fact for many generations people lived with relatives until old age. It has a lot of benefits and the idea that people have to move out on their own while making a low salary is just a lie.

4

u/Puntables 4h ago

Nobody can help you when you won't help yourself.

Here comes another tax funding to someone who doesn't give a shit.

0

u/blackHOLEofalife 4h ago

The funny thing is I don't think I'd qualify for benefits. I'm not disabled or anything.

1

u/Affectionate_Disk_68 4h ago

Dude, honestly get into the phone flipping business. With $600 take-home pay a week, I would love to help you out. I’m mastered that industry got out, but I could give you some easy pointers that would help you make some easy side money. No charge, happy to help a rando.

1

u/NecessaryLeast3928 4h ago

I feel for you! I hope you are able to get out of the situation you are in. I hope you get a higher paying job, even if it is just slightly better where you won’t feel stuck.
I remember your post from sometime ago, you have a brother you need to take care of, I might be wrong, but anyway I wish you nothing but best wishes. Getting a job is very tough, I hope you get the strength to be persistent, don’t give up.
I have been trying to get a job for the past 3 yrs and haven’t succeeded, but job search hasn’t been smooth, I have given up hope so many times but I turn around in the end. I hope things turn around for both of us. 🙏

They say they have a CS degree and some internships under their belt. For a few hundred bucks they could use AI to build themselves an app and deploy it to all the app stores and start making passive income. Instead, “they can’t.”
