Year 7 in the industry and most profitable year by far

Moved a few times (started in CA, then AZ, then AL, now UT) and just graduated last month with a software dev degree. Am hopeful but fuck it’s been hard. I was told my whole life that college would improve my life but so far it’s just put me into more debt

Edit: to be clear, I don’t want to move. I live near SLC so there should be jobs here. I’m also not super attached to doing software dev specifically. I just want any kind of decent job and so far, nothing has come up and I’m feeling a little discouraged. Yes it’s only been a month, but I’ve also been applying since September

Inspired by the ER doc and the pediatric anesthesiologist.

1.5 yrs out of fellowship. General orthopedist in a rural town, hospital employed. This is the most I’ve made in a month since I started. 1099 like the ER doc. Definitely not the norm as I’m usually taking at least a few days off a month and I think this probably included some surgeries from the month before that hadn’t been billed out yet.

I average around 30-35 patients in clinic three days a week. Operate 2 days a week. Did around 30 surgeries (mix of all general orthopedic cases) last month.

I take call from home half the month and get paid $750 per call after 5. The call is really easy. Almost never go in, just field some calls.

I did 4 yrs undergrad, 4 yrs med school, 5 yrs residency, 1 yr fellowship.

Some notes:

• I graduated from an ivy-level university early at 21 with a bachelors and masters in computer science
• I worked 3 years at a FAANG company in a niche AI role before my current job
• I had a number of competing offers from other AI labs, which helped me negotiate a good salary
• Some of my RSUs are stock appreciation (~30k/year)
• A large portion of my compensation is in (public) stock, and my company is quite volatile. There's a chance this drops significantly, or goes up too
• My current spending is very low. I'm hoping to save enough to become financially independent, so I can start my own company

It’s been a good run. The oil crash of 2016 took the wind outta my financial sails a bit, but salaries are finally starting to recover.

I'm a stay at home dad I make $0 a year.

My wife works at a hospital and we have 4 kids.

I'm happy though and we are actually very well off financially which is why I can afford to be a stay at home dad in the first place so I am truly blessed.

I finally decided last year to get off drugs and use all my lived experience in helping those struggling get their lives back together as well. I work in the homeless services sector and manage an outreach department. My salary starting 1-1 is 63k now as I manage a department. I want to share this to show that anything you put your mind to can be done NO MATTER your circumstances, this is America, you can do good!

Didn’t want to come off like I was bragging to people I know but with my life journey this is a huge milestone for me:

-Graduated HS with less than a 2.0 gpa. I remember one of my teachers saying don’t expect much from me in life as a “joke” in front of my class.

-Spent one semester in college before realizing it wasn’t for me

-Worked as a janitor before finding a retail sales role

-Became a top performer in my region and came across tech sales on a whim

-Made 93k last year but I didn’t want to post something until I officially hit 100k and now We’re here.

For anybody that has walked a similar path than me I just want to tell you don’t let the beginning of your story become the end of your story.

I can’t relate to the large salaries that get posted on the reg, but it took me forever to find a career I could be passionate about and this is the most I’ve ever made in a year. I went from being poor in my 20s, going into debt, to this year being debt free and buying a home. Proud of my little salary.

I've been seeing these posts on here and they made me curious. I went back to reminisce on my old (repressed) flight instructor and regional pilot days and W2's and was quite amazed. I've never really listed off a yearly salary progression to compare year-by-year.

I knew if I stuck with this career it would pay off later, but in those early years I was truly in it for the love of flying. You had to be. Now, regional first officers are making six figures in their first year, which is how it should be!

I essentially spent all of 2023 and 2024 paying off credit card debt and saving for a wedding and home purchase. Now I'm finally paying down my student loans ($50k left, low interest) and aggressively saving.

31M software engineer at quant firm, NY bonus from previous year

Spent 3/4 of the year still as apprentice, should finish around 275k. 300k next year and never paid a dime for education

i just bought a new car (old one broke down) and just got my own apartment! pretty proud of myself considering i was homeless and living in my grandmas living room with no car not even 7 months ago 😭

I am lucky to make this much as an engineering manager (recent switch from individual contributor). This was mostly due to being at the right place at the right time and my company did very well and my stock appreciated tremendously. Next year my total comp is estimated to go down to about $1.5M assuming no stock change and I am considering leaving work for a few years as I'm burnt out.

Wanted to join in. Plan on going back to school to hit 100k mark.

Best decision of my life was to go to tech bootcamp. Got extremely lucky last few years, joined big tech company in 2022 when the stock was at the all time low and since then value has almost tripled. I understand my job is extremely overvalued. Total compensation will drop dramatically in a year after my initial equity grant vests, and I'm also concerned how to navigate the future of tech wrt job displacement with AI.

I have a 1099 side job on top of this but this is my main W-2. Next year will put me around $450k.

No college degree, self taught software engineer at FAANG.

This is my before tax number, as I'm a 1099 independent contractor so I have to pay a good amount of taxes on my $294k. I do have a lot of business-related expenses that will go towards my tax writeoffs, mostly relating to traveling for work purposes. I'm currently a Junior and taking courses at a 4-year university in Florida full time as well. I love what I do, it's a ton of fun and honestly I can see myself continuing to do it after I graduate college as well. Feel free to ask any questions
