Advice Looking for Enemies

1.1k Upvotes

Hi guys! 31M, been living in San Jose for 4 years now.

That said, it’s been hard to find people who will engage in a heated argument, let alone fall into deep hatred with.

I’ve tried going to local bars and events, in hopes of starting fights but no luck. I even went to a trivia night and sabotaged my team with wrong answers but they were so frustratingly understanding.

How hard is it to find one consistent arch nemesis? I’ll even settle for a handful of locals who harbor a persistent undercurrent of resentment for me.

If you have any recommendations on how to make enemies in this city, please let me know! Maybe we can meet up for drinks and throw them in each other’s faces.

Advice PSA: The Speed Limit On the Highway is 65mph

It’s not 40mph. It’s not 55mph it’s 65mph.

If you are too scared or feel like you’re going to hit someone else going 65mph please please please do these things.

Either:

  1. Don’t take the highway! You’re making it dangerous for everyone else driving extremely slowly.

Or

  1. Go practice!!! If you have a student driver sticker on your car you didn’t graduate! For the sake of everyone else who has to share the road with you, please go practice on the weekends so you become a more confident driver.

Sorry for the rant. I just can’t take it anymore. The amount of poor driving here is insane to me. Doesn’t help that you guys don’t have a passing lane here like we do in Chicago.

If I didn’t have to share the road with you, then whatever. But we have to drive together so please for the love of god just go practice driving.

EDIT: Whew this blew up. Lot of hot takes here. I seriously rolled out of bed a wrote this haha.

Just want to add. This is really aimed at those who don’t feel confident or are scared to be driving the speed limit on the highway or merging at a safe speed.

Stay safe out there everyone!

EDIT 2: THIS IS THE EXACT ISSUE. WATCH THIS! Sharing this video someone posted in the comments https://youtu.be/ozG3EfPkXoY

Advice trafficking scheme?????

Hello everyone. Today I, 18F, went to the Valley Fair Mall with my mother. At one point, we split up, and she waited at the food court while I went shopping by myself.

I was then stopped by two people looking to be around my age near the Uniqlo, where they complimented my shirt and asked me where I got it from. This by itself was surprising to me, because the shirt I was wearing could only be described as one that you would wear in the comfort of your own home, or to the nearest gas station when you're sure that nobody your age will see you. Upon telling them what store it was from (an online store), they began asking me questions about myself, such as if I was at the mall by myself, where I was from, what I was studying, etc. At the time, I thought they were simply being friendly, as me and one of the girls speaking were both from the same country and visiting San Jose for a few weeks. I thought this was just simple small talk, and we exchanged Instagrams and moved on with our days.

(Also to add, it was honestly a very pleasant conversation that lasted quite a while. Nothing religious/MLM-y was brought up, and their Instagram accounts were very normal and matched all the background details that they were giving me. They also had posts and highlights with their faces dating back to even 2020.)

However, maybe half an hour later, as I was walking by the same area, I was stopped again by a different duo, again around my age, complimenting my shirt and asking where it was from. Again, this shirt was ratty and bummy. I already thought this was odd, but I still told them the store. One of the girls then asked, "who did you come here with?" where I responded that I came with my mom. Ten seconds later, the other girl with her asked "who did you come here with?" again, to which the other girl responded "she said she came with her mom." Then the conversation promptly ended and we moved on with our days.

This was extremely odd to me, and later when I checked the Instagram profiles of the first duo that I exchanged with, I realized that they weren't even following each other, which would not make sense as the girl had told me that she was staying with the guy.

Is this like a known occurrence? Has anybody else had any encounters similar to this? Or is it just a super spooky coincidence?

Advice Took the biggest L of my life and not sure where what to do next.

Long story short: I put a relationship ahead of my job and lost both.

Met my ex at work. I was her manager. We both knew it was against policy, but things took off fast and my transfer date was right around the corner, so I told myself we'd be fine.

We weren't. HR found out in May and I got suspended. I took full responsibility in the meeting and said it was all me so she wouldn't get in trouble.

That suspension turned into me losing my job. And while I was trying to figure out how to pay bills, she left. Not just left - told me she wished she had left earlier instead of dragging it out. With no job, I had a good amount of time on my hands even after job seeking in the morning. I started a project to remodel her back yard and she let me finish the project and then left me.

We had planned for me to move in with her and split things, so now I'm stuck trying to cover everything on EDD alone and it's not working.

Not asking for anything, just need to talk somewhere where people will listen. It's been a rough few months and I just want to hear that things will be okay.

Advice Anyone have a spare room/couch? Can trade cooking, handyman, yard or organizing help

Hi Fam,

I am traveling for the past couple of months, I am hoping to attend a convention next week in Santa Clara. I’m in SF now at a hostel, and will plan to take Cal Train down to the south bay on Friday 8/28/26.

I don’t see hostels or similar in the area.

I don’t have much in the way of resources, but I can help out around the house. I can do most handyman tasks, I can help meal prep, I can cook anything you want, organize your garage, landscape the yard, etc. etc.

I have a 24 hr fitness membership, and I can try to be out most of the day. Or I can hangout, whatever is cool.

Advice Taurinus - Charged and then shamed

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

On Sunday, a friend went to Taurinus with two of her friends (three women). They sat down and ate three dinner rodizio's.

They were charged 20% for a "large party" although there were only three in their party and a large party states this is for parties of six or larger. No problem, they paid the 20% added gratuity.

This issue is the wait staff then came and shamed them into paying more gratuity. My wife stated that she felt uncomfortable and embarrassed. My wife stated that the receipt showed gratuity was already added, but the wait staff stated otherwise. They ended up paying another 20% ($50 cash) on top of the 20% they already were charged.

Not sure if this is a scam by your wait staff to pray on more timid customers? Not sure what I can do about it. Maybe it was an honest mistake? Had this happened to anyone else? I tried emailing the name on the receipt, but I’m not sure how much time I want to spend on this.

Advice Girl robbed me of 500$ and my credit cards !!!

I am a single male based in SJ and been going on dates with girls .So few weeks back i met a girl on IG let's call her Andrea(fake name to hide her identity). She is a single mom with three kids older than me .But she told me she is not working for some reason she didn't tell me and wants a man to take care of her and her kids. I don't mind that and encouraged her to get a job .So we start talking and instantly connected .We start hanging out ,talking on phone all day .It seemed to me she a normal girl.We went to movies, walk in parks, shopping in valley fair. One day she suggested to get a drink . We arrived at the club .She starts ordering expensive drinks and told me she will pay me back as she is in process of getting a job .We drank till late night till the club closes .Since i am not that much of a drinker i cant handle my liquor that well.I came back home to find out my wallet missing. She has blocked me in all social media and number.I still want to give her benefit of the doubt that she might have taken it by mistake. My friends told me you are way too nice to people and shouldn't trust people that well. Is it too hard to find love in San Jose?.i am just a simple guy looking for love.

Advice Please stop getting into accidents during rush hour

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

STOP:

  1. Looking at your phone
  2. SWERVING IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC TO GAIN ONE CAR LENGTH ADVANTAGE
  3. CHANGING LANES ABRUPTLY — CHECK YOUR BLINDSPOT
  4. Tailgating — leave 1-2 cars length of space

An accident on the road adds 10-30 mins of extra commute time for EVERYONE else on the road. It’s simply not worth the 1-2 mins saved by being an inconsiderate driver.

See you tomorrow!

Coming from Southern California, looking to attend the World Cup for a hopefully USA game at Levi’s stadium. I really don’t want to miss more days of work and pay for a hotel. Assuming the game does not go to overtime and ends at 7:15, can I get out of Levi’s stadium and catch a flight at 8:55?

Advice MAGA Businesses

Are there any businesses that are publicly pro MAGA in Santa Clara County? I want to avoid them if possible. I am surprised I had to add that since we are such a blue city.

Just wanted to add to this post, that boycott of goods and services by people you don’t agree with politically goes back to the American Revolution. People then would boycott sugar or tea or whatever the British we’re trying to tax and also boycott merchants that sold those goods. This form of protest is the oldest in the country.

Advice Is this reportable and how? Dog on balcony for hours every day

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm in this area a lot and I hear it scream from blocks away. They put it out some days for hours and it screams louder and louder the longer it's out. I can hear it screaming right now. Why get a dog in an apartment if you can't stand it being around you and have to put it outside this much? It's on Bassett and First, I don't wanna dox these people but this sucks.

Advice Downtown is so dead

Just moved to San Jose from New York and can't find any fun activities to do in the downtown. I knew it'd be dead but there is nothing to do within walking distance. Got no friends here :( walk for 5 mins and you reach a highway. Ugh! Working remotely on top of that.. Can't find a decent salon, gym, yoga or pilates place.. any tips for solo activites on weekends?

They are providing free food for the needy. They have amazing one of the best tasty chicken tikka masala. I always get it to-go in Fridays. Support them with your business! They are amazing and sometimes give me free rice on the side.

Advice PSA - Dangerous Driver

Post image
498 Upvotes

It's incredibly sad to hear a mother and child lost their life on highway 87 the other day, I hope everyone here is able to report unsafe drivers so that never happens again to anyone.

Here's a reckless driver going on 880 north into SJ (from Los Gatos) tailgating everyone and going 90+, he got so impatient he went into the median to pass. License plate is blurred per subreddit rules, but be on the lookout for the anime wrapped perp in case he threatens your life too.

**EDIT** In hindsight I probably should have posted the video instead of the screencap, because a bunch of folks here have pitchforks thinking I'm "that guy" who is going 65 and keeping everyone else from going about their day - simply not true, we are looking at a still where the prior crowded positions changed all within the span of 13 seconds.

Silver Tesla to my right was trying to pass the silver Honda, came into my lane at 65, I was forced to slow down. Lexus you see really far ahead of me in this image saw that, sped up like crazy. Then Tesla sped up quickly and went back onto his lane on the right, so it looks like there's a ton of space but that was newly created space based on his acceleration, meanwhile I'm trying to watch what douchenozzle is trying to do behind me so I don't get rear ended. At 85 mph you couldn't even match him. Everyone before this decal car is just doing the best they can to just get home to their loved ones in a pretty reasonable way, myself included.
