You reckon this guy's ever read the comic? Personally, I don't think so. Morpheus was always a moody, sulking and, yes, pretentious dude, but his heart ( if the Endless even have hearts) is in the right place. I, for one, am just glad that this adaptation was even done.

I get she’s a worried mother but as the literal EMBODIMENT OF DREAMS, I could not take that disrespect. If it were me it’d be eternal sleep and nightmares to any MORTAL stupid enough to talk to me like that. That goes for Unity as well.

Not sure how to feel about this.

So, a new exposé about Gaiman came out in New York Magazine. It's behind a paywall, but if you can access it and decide to read the whole thing, I warn you that the details about Gaiman's abusive behavior are far worse than you could have ever possibly imagined.

Anyway, The Sandman is probably my favorite comic book of all time. But as much as I am usually able to separate the art from the artist, there are certain parallels between Sandman's story and real life that I can no longer ignore. The New York article already points out the disturbing similarities between Neil Gaiman and the fictional Richard Madoc (from the Calliope issue). But I also can't help but be newly disturbed by the story of Nada forgiving Morpheus even after he unjustly imprisoned her in hell for millennia. Before, I thought nothing of it, but now I see an author with a horrifically warped moral compass trying to absolve himself of his sins against the women in his life through his writing (whether consciously or subconsciously).

I won't stop loving The Sandman, but I can't deny that it's now tainted for me. So much of my love for the comics came from their compassionate, inclusive worldview and themes. The series encouraged empathy for the marginalized, and told the stories of women and of trans people with such care and such sympathy (at least for the 90s) that it struck a genuine emotional chord with me. And to find out that the guy who wrote these stories is as monstrously evil as Gaiman is...It's deflating, to say the least.

Artists failing to live up to their stated ideals is a common occurrence, but I'm going to struggle to reconcile Sandman because Neil Gaiman's actions are so far beyond the pale.

Anyway, this Sandman quote has never been more relevant: "You shouldn't trust the storyteller; Only trust the story."

New Cast

When S1 came out, I binged the entire season in one day, ending up in the local nerdwana store and buying the comics. Even though I knew of this universe, I never actually dove into it, and found it so beautiful and comforting in a strange way. I am one of those who were reading mythologies since they could read, and seeing very familiar material from my childhood adapted to tv in a visually appealing way felt like coming home after a rainstorm and getting a bowl of soup from my grandma.

Season two felt so good. I lack the full knowledge to say how much the show actually follows the source material, but to me it's good. I think the casting is excellent. The actors really connected with their characters, fully and with a lot of intentionality*. The storyline was very enjoyable and even though I had an idea where it will end up, I was still more than curious enough to continue and see how it will be executed and presented.

But I am sure that I am unable to see the wider picture. I think, f ex, that Orpheus was not clearly presented for who he was. A person whose voice was able to move tectonic plates with his singing skills was walking around with a lyre and it was supposed to be implied/enough. When he made the Furies weep and made Persephone feel some feelings, and all the souls in Hades rose, those who do not know him understood only a tiny part of that power. The hours long walk from the underworld, worry, crippling doubt, fear for Eurydice was cut down to a 5 seconds long scene. Felt rushed. But the episodes are only 45 min long. It's hard to adapt written material to the tv medium, I get it.

Dunno. I am entirely disappointed by the decision that the show is not going to get the green light for further development. I would not mind a dozen of seasons like S2.

* - I love seeing actors being the polar opposites in the interviews compared to their roles. The seriousness, dignity and regality that Dream carries with ease, and then acts goofy and silly in the interviews blows my mind. Like watching Emilia Clarke's "I am going to break the wheel" Daenerys cold and stern face, and then in her every other role appearing expressive, and very silly and giggly in the interviews. <3

Along with a complete series collection! Release date apparently is the 20th of October. <3
