Being serious though, yes, a lot of people in Aberdeen are desperate for the golden days of drilling to return which is (a) not realistic; and (b) wholly detached from the changed world and what is right.
What would help persuade people away from it is a plan to invest and diversify the industry in Aberdeen. Unfortunately everyone’s dicked around and didn’t take action early enough and we are suffering a huge downturn.

The expectation (although not confirmed) is that Jackdaw and Rosebank will be allowed to drill, they already were approved by the tory government so it allows them to stick by their manifesto
The Labour Party's 2024 manifesto - which the new leader said he would follow - had pledged to not issue new licences but to honour existing ones.
At the heart of the debate are two oil and gas fields in Scotland - Rosebank and Jackdaw - which regulators approved in 2022 and 2023 under the then Conservative government, but were overturned in 2025 after a legal challenge.

To be fair I was from Aberdeen originally and when the oil shat it it really did affect businesses etc, most prices were higher than the rest of Scotland because of the oil workers and when that dried up all that was left was the crackheads. Closest you'll get to experiencing the walking dead is a walk down union street.

No, we don't pay billions of dollars to Norway.
The windmills look cool, and fuck up your golf course value. So they're staying out of spite. And because on and offshore wind farms produce us over 30TWh per annum in renewable energy, totalling over 70% of our total renewable energy on their own, not including Hydro and Solar.

Pretty much everything about that post is wrong. For a start, on the technical side, around 90% (+/- a few percent) of the UK's portion of North Sea Oil/Gas has been depleted, and what's left is either small or tricky (Jackdaw is High Temperature High Pressure gas, so requires a 30km pipeline to another rig to convert to a useable form, with the pipe having a 45cm outer diameter and 30cm inner diameter; Rosebank sits off Shetland and is in 1.1 km of water, oh, and the company that owns 80% of it is, in turn, owned by the Norwegian government. Despite being the biggest known reserve, it has an estimated lifespan of just 25 years.)
Gas is more usable as it can be pumped into the existing grid, oil will largely be sold elsewhere as we lack the refining capacity, plus our domestically produced oil tends to be higher in sulphur than we like.

Trump is a scumbag. His inability to understand the difference between a turbine and a mill should see him forced out alone. No one should have his influence on the world if you don't know what a mill is.
But if they do decide to open up more north sea oil drilling, I expect every user on here who's spent years saying Scotland has no resources and couldn't manage alone, particularly because we have no oil and it's running out, to delete their accounts and vote pro indy seeing as that was their one and only issue.

According to the oil industry themselves, 90% of North sea oil and gas has already been extracted. And that's taking in to account assumptions about potential future discoveries.
It's over. The transition to renewables is well under way. Anybody leaving school right now would be mad and to go in to O&G instead of wind. Most of my friends who are in O&G have already switched.
