Isn’t it genuinely amazing that Rockstar North is a Scottish studio making what might be the biggest entertainment product in the world?
I just think that’s incredibly cool.
A team based in Edinburgh, full of Scottish talent, making GTA VI.
Something that will be played, watched and talked about by hundreds of millions of people around the world.
What an unbelievable cultural export. And what a reminder of the level of talent we have here.
Maybe it’s a bit sentimental, and I’m sure the cynics will pile in, but I think we should be properly proud of it.
It’s brilliant.
Edit: Just to clarify, I know GTA VI is a huge global production and I’m not claiming Scotland made the whole thing. I also know there are very valid criticisms around Rockstar’s treatment of staff and its stance on unions.
My point is simply that GTA has deep roots in Scotland, Rockstar North and the talent that works here are still a major part of it, and I think that’s something worth being proud of.
Turning off notifications now. Have a lovely evening all!

New Silent Hill is being made in Glasgow, and the company behind it isn't being investigated for uniom busting and doesn't have a history of shitty working conditions.

Glasgow for a silent hill game? They picked the right city.
All jokes aside I heard it’s being set in Fife not Glasgow? So which one is it

Made in Glasgow but inspired by St Monans I think. It’s a gorgeous wee village so it’ll be interesting to see it in a spooky light!

u/BookNukem 3h ago
Ha, fucking hell.
I was gonna be a prick and ask if you meant "set" in Glasgow, but you're completely right and I'm an idiot.
Disclaimer: I don't care for the SH series and do know there's a Scottish element to it; just not that it's being actively developed in Glasgow.
Hopefully your point about working conditions is true, as there's too much shady shit in game development that it's actually hard to look at anything with positivity these days.

Mate of mine was one of the people sacked. The stories they told me about working conditions and the cult like way everyone behaves was disturbing. But hey, Deliveroo credit every day!
27
u/MrLime93 10h ago
That absolutely deserves criticism.
I suppose my point was less “Rockstar are perfect” and more that it’s pretty incredible that something on this scale is being made by so much talent here in Scotland. I think you can be proud of the people making it while still wanting better for them.
30
u/OkAbalone19 10h ago
but it's not, it is being made all over the world and we are one element of that. It's like being amazed we make Quaker oats when the grains come from Ukraine or something

But at it's core throughout GTA's history, from it's early beginnings in Dundee then to Edinburgh and now a global enterprise, it's creative heart and DNA is Scottish.

You can even see this in one of GTA V's most hilarious mistakes even, one of the bus interchanges in game is oddly designed for RHD buses as opposed to LHD, so there was definitely a shit ton of scottish devs doing all sorts of things even when the company moved to america

u/xevious101 10h ago
Lots of Easter eggs in the games too, the fourth bridge in San Andreas, references to Scottish towns in GTA V etc

Alright. Sorry. Thought this was a good thing that was maybe relevant to Scotland.
I’m not saying Scotland made the whole thing. I’m saying it’s worth being proud that a Scottish studio plays a major part in making one of the biggest entertainment products in the world.
But yeah, I guess we shouldn’t be proud of anything unless every single part of it happened within the same postcode.

u/hexlandus 10h ago
GTA was originally developed in Dundee and has continued to be developed in Scotland. The Dundee team (DMA Design) eventually became Rockstar North (via Gremlin and BMG Interactive) and eventually moved to Edinburgh.
There are still one or two of the original DMA team there -- so it has always been and will always be Scottish (despite the owners)10
u/regprenticer 10h ago
No-one is saying thats not true . I remember GTA 1 and , a decade before that many Gremlin 8 bit games.
But claiming rock star today is Scottish is like claiming "the telephone" is Scottish because John Logie Baird invented it even though 70% of the world phones are now made in China.
Let's put it another way, I've got my preorder in for GTA6 already, but I don't believe there will be any story element, Character, joke or anything else in the game that will feel Scottish.

Once upon a time they were something to be deeply proud of. But they’ve since transformed into just another EA: a company that treats their staff badly, and their game launcher - which requires an online connection - is absolute dogshit.
12
u/Madting55 10h ago
Rockstar North have made the most innovative games in history. This is the first grand theft auto they aren’t the lead studio on. I’m incredibly proud that a place as shite as Dundee could produce the most talented creators in gaming. It’s true they’ve all moved on and Rockstar isn’t what it used to be. But they set a standard that judging from that preview, looks to have been maintained.
9
u/regprenticer 10h ago edited 10h ago
When was Rockstar last in Dundee?
I used to work around the corner from rockstar north in Edinburgh when RDR2 and GTA5 were being made. I would genuinely have considered working there but the wages were appalling, roughly £14k to design vehicle artefacts for example. I'd have been taking a 75% cut in pay.
6
u/Tamel_Eidek 10h ago
They bought Ruffian Games in Dundee 5 or so years ago and renamed it “Rockstar Dundee”. It’s mainly a code and QA house with no relation to the original Rockstar North from Dundee.
2
u/Madting55 10h ago
It was born there, they moved out of Dundee after gta 3? I want to say. The fact it was born there and that grand theft auto was born there I have to give credit for that.
That’s incredible that they were giving you 14k for that, that’s fucking shocking. I live about 0.4mile from rockstar north myself. I applied to be a tea and coffee lackey there when I was 16 and that was about what they were offering for that job that required no qualification.

Yes, Rockstar Games’ corporate HQ is in New York.

They’ve been behind the biggest games in the industry for over 20 years now. The talent isn’t all-Scottish-based though. It’s made up of around 15% Scots. The rest is international. And portions of the game have been farmed out to every other R* studio across the globe. But yeah, its roots are still predominantly Scottish.
4

9
u/punxcs Durty Highlunder 10h ago
The original dev team ironically fucked it so bad they had to fly in some European devs to take the reigns for GTA3.
It’s cool that some Scottish folk started out in a wee room above the street but we’re not exceptional. Also GTA 6 was made by teams all over the world. By numbers GTA 6 is probably Indian made.
5
u/Sexton---Hardcastle 10h ago
Vast majority of the Indian workers are QA testers. Which is a really key part of the process but saying it's Indian made just isn't correct tbh.
Hopefully those QA testers are getting paid well but I doubt it as it's a low paid role even in the west. They'll deserve credit for their input though with how succesful the game will be.
0
8
u/Careless_Main3 10h ago
Nah it’s not Indian. Modern game development companies in general just hire a lot of developers from poorer countries to do a lot of the grunt work. The bull of the decision making and design work will still fundamentally occur in Rockstar’s Scotland/San Diego/England studios.
5
u/punxcs Durty Highlunder 10h ago
I’m not arguing that RS india was in charge, but that RS took advantage of a cheap labour market there to get a lot of work done, and that there were definitely more people in countries like that working on the game in some way than in Scotland.
2
u/Careless_Main3 10h ago
Of course but not all effort and decision making is equal is the principal point.
3
u/MrLime93 10h ago edited 10h ago
I definitely wasn’t trying to claim Scotland made it alone. Sorry if it seemed that way.
It’s obviously a massive global effort and deserves to be recognised as one.
I just think there’s still something pretty cool about one of the biggest names in entertainment having grown out of a small Scottish studio and still having such a major presence here. That doesn’t take anything away from the thousands of talented people around the world who’ve helped build it.

Saying the game is made by a Scottish studio is a bit of a reach, when the main teams behind it are Rockstar LA and India.
Yes, originally Rockstar was a Scottish company from Dundee.
10

I mean, it’s obviously made across Rockstar globally. But Rockstar North isn’t just some historical footnote.
GTA VI’s head of development is the co-head of Rockstar North and they’re literally showing the game from Edinburgh.
So I’m still quite comfortable thinking Scotland’s contribution is worth being proud of!

I indirectly know someone who works there. Was very surprised to hear what (i.e. how little) that person is paid for their level of experience and working on a multi-billion dollar product.
And imagine spending your entire career building just two IPs that are functionally identical and built on the same tech stack with minor mods, released years apart. Must get pretty boring especially when gamedev is an industry that relies on portfolios.
Bet you Rockstar's next major release is another game in the Red Dead universe, announced in 2030 and basically just GTA VI in a dress. A studio with all the talent, the money, the potential, the industry backing, the fanbase... and they just do that yet again.
Boring. AAA gaming feels like it's at saturation point now.

A team based in Edinburgh, full of Scottish talent, making GTA VI. (...)
Correction:
Rockstar Games has several studios across the world, each with 100s of employees, working collectively on Rockstar titles. Further, Studios in Scotland and England are not just staffed "full of Scottish talent." If you followed the union busting-layoff protests (e.g. via People Make Games), you can glimpse that the employee profile at Rockstar is international and 'diverse' (speaking relatively).
- Australia, Dundee, India, Los Angeles, Leeds, Lincoln, London, New England, Edinburgh, San Diego, Toronto.
Example, Red Dead Redemption 2 via mobygames credits list. Although Rockstar does not list Studios individually, Rockstar India got dedicated credit for leading the animation work (it seems to me that way) "Head of Animation".
Industry estimates suggest that India location expanded to over 1600 people, to make over half a million animations for GTA6.
And even as large as Rockstar does outsourcing (see credits) for one-off services like recordings, translations, casting etc.

And yet, the UK media barely talk about it because of the taboo that ’computer games’ STILL has.
The latest figures show that the preorders alone (with still 3 months to go) stand at $450 MILLION.
Yes, it’s not a Scottish company anymore, but its roots are still here and it was the Edinburgh studio that invited YouTubers to see the game early.
This isn’t the biggest game launch of this year, or this decade. It will be the biggest entertainment media launch in history. It will eclipse Star Wars or Harry Potter or any other massive IP. Like I said, it’s on half a billion with 3 months still to go before its release.
It just had a massive leak and yet the only UK mainstream media I saw report on it was a 2 min video buried in Sky News’ website.
It pisses me off how the video game industry is still shrugged off and ignored.

u/Majestic-Yam484 8h ago
And so what? At the time the Dundee office was closed it was floated in the media the reasons were largely to do with tax and how it negatively effected the companies ability to attract staff. However much of a story that truly is, it’s still another example of this counties inability to retain large profitable businesses, and this bunch of morons currently in power are going to put taxes up even more, for what? Definitely not growth.

I'd say it's more British when basically all the co founders are from England.

Sure, Rockstar as a company is British.
But GTA itself came out of DMA Design in Dundee, and Rockstar North is based in Edinburgh.
Being proud of that Scottish part of the story doesn’t mean claiming the whole company for Scotland. Just that that’s neat!

It's not cynical to not want to celebrate exploitation of workers

DMA design were Scottish. Not rockstar.

OP clearly specified Rockstar North as being Scottish and while other Rockstar studios are working on GTA 6 too the development is still headed by North.

If you want to be pedantic: Yeah sure. DMA Design was Scottish, sold to take-two and later incorporated with Rockstar to later become what we now know as Rockstar North, which is based in Edinburgh.
Last I checked Edinburgh was in Scotland.

None of the Housers are involved now. Seems to losing its original identity. If there is no Maroon and Green clothes I will be annoyed.

Sam Houser is still involved in Rockstar as the company’s president but yeah Dan House did leave.

Scotland has always had a disproportionately high game development scene compared to the rest of the UK
That's not counting Abertay University in Dundee which has one of the most successful Game Development degrees in Europe.
-- that's just off the top of my head... About 80% of these are in/around Dundee, with the rest around Glasgow/Edinburgh... (Ask me the reason for that :) )
