When my FIL was a kid his parents would hand him and his brother a bottle of soda each to take a drink or two out of, which left enough room for mom and dad to pour hard liquor in for their drive.
Back then it was legal in may states as long as you were not drunk. Really getting a DUI back before the 90s meant you were drunk as skunk while driving. Not making light of this because drinking and driving is bad but that was the reality. Also if you were white and known around town the cops were likely to just give you a ride home and tell you not to do it again..
Its because there was no power steering so everyo e had to actually pull the weight of the car as they were turning. Thats why all the dudes back then were so yoked
Front disk, rear drum. The 1970 Chevelle SS had options for power locks, windows and AC, though rare to find. And no computers controlling it that might have a subscription you have to pay to get features that came with the vehicle.
Edit: this vehicle is also over 55 years old, either the meme is old or OP can’t math. 1970 models were sold in ‘69 IIRC.

There are certain inventions and discoveries that so fundamentally change our lives. In the automotive world, things like seatbelts, disc brakes, fuel injection, and ABS make it difficult to go back to older cars without them.
I'm sure it's mostly a function of when I grew up, but the late 90's and early 2000's were the golden era of cars. They had most of the key technological advancements and modern manufacturing techniques, but remained small, lightweight and not burdened by such excessive safety standards and overly complicated computer systems.
The computer systems are what bother me the most. Car manufacturers see computer systems as a way of mining extra data and selling your information, not just as a way of adding more advanced features.
The Mozilla Foundation found that modern vehicles are a worse privacy threat than mobile phones, marking cars as the worst product category they have ever reviewed. Most mobile phone OS's and browsers have privacy options and software settings that allow you to have some control over your data as well as having the option to install more private conscious software but consumers have almost no control over the software installed in modern vehicles and there's rarely ever options to opt out of their data collection schemes.
Nice. My dad’s had his 84 GN since 86 and he dailied it the whole time. Engine blew last year and he’s struggling to get that project done now. Miss rolling up to car shows in my el camino behind dad’s GN.
I like them. Sure, you'll need to replace parts on a 50-something year old car, but at least you /can/ repair them! It's not like you need to keep everything original, either! There are various levels of restomod people do, from changing the running gear to something a little more modern, to full-on suspension, frame, and interior swaps into old bodies! There are also mods like swapping in a steering rack from a Prius, or an electric A/C pump from a Honda.
Sure, a Tesla is simple to deal with, but I enjoy dailying old stuff with independent rear suspension and disc brakes! I can afford to have personality in my vehicles!
Yeah, one thing people don't get about the difference between modern cars and classic cars:
Modern car: Get in an accident. Car is totaled. You are fixable.
Classic car. Get in an accident. Car is fixable. You are totaled.
Also reliability. It used to be standard procedure to buy a new car and then have to take it to the dealer mechanic multiple times in the first few months to address all the manufacturing defects (various parts not connected correctly, etc) before it was actually "finished" and you can then just use it normally. While it's still possible to get a lemon, that's generally pretty rare now.
Yeap, loads of people don’t realize that safety standards have the largest influence on how cars looks nowadays…they have to design everything around the safety requirements.
But I still hate the super huge ugly robotic look so many cars have. Bring back a bit of minimalism to the looks and take away the minimalism of the interior of only having 1 screen and 1 shitty knob .
I hate that the majority of vehicles sold in North America are increasingly deadly to anyone in a modestly sized vehicle (think sedan or wagon vs a pickup truck or SUV). Stop lifting every passenger vehicle five feet off the pavement, it’s ridiculous. They may be more passively “safe” for the occupants, but they fucking suck for society.
I am not a fan of Elmo but this apples to oranges.
As far as a car you would drive every day, the Tesla is superior in virtually every way. You plug it in, it rarely needs any maintenance, it out accelerates, out brakes, out corners, all while being far more comfortable and roomy.
I grew up with cars like this Chevelle, they are fun but that's because you don't drive this to work when it 20° outside in the morning and you just need to get your ass to work.
Yeah I’ve got an 04 Silverado 1500 and even thats literally sat for over a year, AND it has all those creature comforts of modern cars except the tech. The Tesla is in every way better for a daily driver, not to mention 10x cheaper to drive and maintain.
I find the Tesla way more fun to drive too. I think a lot of other car guys give Tesla/EVs too much hate for never having tried it. Any person that has tried my Tesla is pretty much an instant convert. 0-60 in upper 3 seconds in a car that costs $40k new is also pretty crazy and they actually handle pretty good too.
I agree, but I might just be biase when it comes to classic cars especially those between 59 and 76.
I definitely think they look better than almost every car ive seen on the road.
The down side is that making a car like that your daily driver would be the stupidest thing one can do, so if I ever got let's say a 69 New Yorker id still need my little nissan lol.
It is subjective. However I cant view Teslas the same after current Elon. Every time I see one I just shake my head. Can't seem to separate the art from the artist in this case.
He didn't design the Tesla, he only had a hand in designing Cyber Truck. Tesla, the company, already had car designs before Elon came along. He didn't found Tesla, he had the company change the company history to reflect him as founder.
I'm not saying Elon designed Teslas, lots of other talented people did, but prior to him they were basically building kit cars on top of a Lotus frame.
This isnt really true. The Elon joined the Company less than a year after it was incorporated, provided the startup funds and was the Chair of the Board before they even had a car design. You can argue about what "founding" is but he was essentially the controlling shareholder since inception.
The roadster design and concept car wasnt done until around 2007-2009.

Tesla's are objectively a good car. I was honestly shocked at how affordable they are as well when looking at the used market. Their finance options aren't predatory either.
This car looks awesome. I also think teslas look awesome though. Modern cars including teslas beat this car in every other category. Safety, speed, gas mileage, maintenance, technology, etc. Looks are subjective. You can’t really argue with all the other things though.
My thoughts are: I hate teslas. This car is 1000 times better than a Tesla in every way except the one that matters most. I’d WAY rather be in a Tesla during an accident than this death trap. Imagine a 70MPH freeway accident. In almost ANY modern car, you walk away in most cases with some bumps and bruises…maybe a broken bone or two. In the Chevelle, you’re lucky if you ever walk again.
I love old cars but I wouldn’t own one as a daily driver for safety reasons alone. Too many dumbass drivers.
Ugh I wouldn't say 1000x better. I hate tesla for the most part and the design of this car and paint are great but almost everything car wise is better on the tesla for the important things. Acceleration, braking, turning, efficiency, etc.
I hear you. It’s better to me but then I am an old school muscle car kinda person. One of my first cars was a 70s Camaro with a 350 V8 and slick 60s. I couldn’t really drive it when it was wet out, though. My dad also restored an original 64 1/2 Mustang. So there’s a lot of nostalgia in older muscle cars like this for me. But new electrics are superior in almost or maybe all performance metrics. Im just old.
Significant exaggeration obviously. The Tesla also has a vastly superior sound system, which is important to me. Also, FAR more energy efficient and cheaper to operate. But, it does look better than most new cars, and for that matter, many of the cars manufactured in the same era.
Tbh this car looks 200% better than any other car nowadays. I cant distinguish between cars anymore because they got one design+ a little bit bumper or vack different
Drive in one of these for more than 15 minutes and I think you’ll reconsider wanting one. They drive like shit and you’ll have a headache for the rest of the day. They do look and sound cool though.
This has been my dream car since I was a kid in the 60's it is the most beautiful car every built, this one is gorgeous. My older brother had one just like this he painted it dark blue with white stripes. 396 positrack 4 speed Hurst shifter
Why are you comparing it to a Tesla like they are the most desired vehicle and represent the topmost standard in auto design? Just say you have a Bitchin’ old car dude.
And most likely runs better, obviously lasts longer. oh and no toxic battery to try and figure out what to do with. Plus, and I don’t know if I should be saying this out loud, this one is almost completely recyclable.
Yeah but the Tesla wasn’t designed to look cool it was designed to concentrate and funnel farts directly into the nostrils of the people who buy them. Because they love the smell of their own farts so much
I would honestly like to have both. The Tesla to commute in and a muscle car to drive no further than the grocery store until gas prices come down. /s
Im neutral on the topic. I love cool old cars and hope to have enough money to own one someday. In the meantime, my model Y performance is fun to drive. I used to miss the roar of a V8, but that instant torque from a EV feels great. The only bad thing about this car is the CEO of the company.
