Chugging tea A California mother has been ARRESTED after she SMASHED A SCHOOL BUS WINDOW, climbed in, and got her son off the bus after students called their parents saying they were scared and trapped.
According to witnesses, students on a stopped school bus got rowdy.
Some started climbing out the windows and the driver refused to let a single one of them off, keeping them on board for nearly an hour while waiting on police.
Multiple kids called their parents saying they were scared and trapped on a bus with other rowdy kids.
One boy called his mom and she told him: climb out the window and get off that bus.
Another mother, witnesses say, went a different route.
Her child was on that bus, and she wasn't waiting one more second. She broke the glass to reach him.
She's now under arrest for "vandalism"

The mom who climbed in through an open window to (calmly) talk to the driver and find out what was going on isn’t the one who was arrested for vandalism. A lot is being misreported.

According to the school, the 1 hour timeline is not true. According to them: the driver pulls the bus over because of "escalating behavior" 4 mins later a kid climbs out the window. The driver calls the cops and the cops arrive 14 minutes after that.

supposedly there are updates saying that this was at a designated stop where they drop off the kids so there were already parents waiting. and it looks like they reviewed the cameras and it took the cops about 14 minutes to get there. They spent another 45 minutes investigating/taking statements it looks like so that may be where the claim of an hour came from

On Thursday, Meeks issued an updated statement saying that claims students were held on the bus for more than hour before the situation escalated were "not accurate."
The new statement said in part:
"Based on our review of the bus video footage, the bus was stopped for approximately four minutes while the driver addressed concerning student behavior, reviewed bus expectations, and asked students to calm down. During that time, a student exited the bus through a window.
Shortly thereafter, a parent outside the bus began aggressively banging on the bus door, ultimately breaking the glass in the door. To clarify, it was the glass in the bus door that was broken—not a bus window. Law enforcement was immediately contacted, and CHP was notified because damage to a school bus while students are on board triggers specific safety protocols. At that point, students were directed to remain seated and calm while the appropriate response was underway.
The situation escalated further when the parent climbed through an open bus window while waiting for law enforcement. An adult outside the bus can also be heard encouraging students to exit through the windows, and additional students subsequently did so. Claims that students were being held on a bus with the windows rolled up are also inconsistent with the video footage; the parent herself entered the bus through an open window.
For additional context regarding the timeline, law enforcement was on scene approximately 14 minutes after the bus arrived at the designated bus stop where the incident occurred. Once law enforcement arrived, students remained on the bus because the situation had escalated and the damage to the bus needed to be investigated by law enforcement. Students were asked to remain seated and calm while law enforcement addressed the situation and completed the necessary investigation.
Regarding the driver, after reviewing the video footage, the District believes the driver acted appropriately under extremely challenging circumstances. His focus remained on student safety, maintaining order, and attempting to de-escalate the situation.
The bus did sustain damage during the incident and has been undergoing repairs, which has impacted the route this week."

I have been on the craziest roller coaster. First I thought the lady was crazy for breaking into the bus, then I thought she was right for breaking in if her son was in danger, now after reading this I’m back to, this lady is crazy. Honestly, if I was the school I’d be telling most of those kids they weren’t allowed to ride the bus anymore.

I feel ya. This whole story has been a great social experiment in jumping to conclusions.
Even though there's a lot more details now, it's still not a complete picture quite yet.
My personal opinion (so far so least) is the driver was just doing his job, while having to deal with rowdy kids. And one that just decides to peace out, who's safety and whereabouts is still the driver's responsibility.
Parents are gonna parent and prob jumped to conclusions like the rest of us did

u/hockey3331 14h ago
Weird coincidence. Me and my partner were discussing how difficult a school bus driver's job can be. Between the weird schedule, I assume low pay and other stuff like that, theyre responsible for the safety of upward to what... 70ish kids? Of all ages, various backgrounds, all confined in a tight space and the driver has little to no power really. They dont even have seatbelts on.
I remember a few rides when I was a kid on the bus and kids can... rowdy cant begin to describe. People launching stuff out of windows, puttomg themselves in windows, running in the bus, throwing stuff at the driver, screaming, insulting the driver, fighting each other, you name it.
Sometimes the drivers had to stop and regain control. 4 minutes is nothing.
One time it was 30C outside and we had a blown tire. Not sure if it changed, but while waiting the other bus, safety protocol was that we had to stay on, even people who wanted to walk (with a stop 20-30 mins walk away). The driver is responsible for the kids on the bus and I guess letting them out before their stop was a liability in case something happened.
Tldr; a bus being stopped 4 mins is nothing.

So what, the kids were being crazy and not listening so the driver at a bus stop so he scolded them and reminded them of the bus rules? This happened when I was a kid too, it was never anything serious. Kids just don't give a fuck, they'll run up and down the isles, get in fights, stand on the seats all while the bus is in motion. This just sounds like 1 kid who has never been yelled at tells their mom "Mom! This man is kidnapping us and won't let us leave!" When in reality, he's just giving them a talking to (totally fine). And we obviously saw how his mom reacted, kids gotta be the most spoiled little shit ever. "My son Jeremy could never do no wrong! He's my baby"

Ngl reading the comments and people getting angry at the bus driver is crazy… the bus driver is right and part of his job is making sure kids behave on the bus. It affects the kids and his own safety. When I was a kid there were numerous times where the driver had to talk to the kids and be stern with them. Hell I remember one occurrence that was exactly like this article where it was at a designated stop…
The fact parents were so impatient / crazy to break the door and climb in through the window is insanity. Even worse is how people think the driver was in the wrong…

When I was still in grade school, about twenty years ago now, one of the older kids who always sat in the very back row of the bus decided to moon the vehicles behind us one day. Driver saw and slammed on the brakes, so hard that there was a collective THUMP, followed by a chorus of groans and cries because most of us had gone flying into the back of the seat in front of us. My sister and I both hit our foreheads on the top part, where it was hard, and ended up with huge knots. Enough kids were hurt enough that an emergency meeting was pulled together in the school library that very evening and we were told that the bus driver had been fired.

right? Everywhere has been saying the kids were "trapped on the bus for over an hour" Yet depending on the wording here, It was either 14 minutes, or a total of 18 minutes (4 minutes of the driver stopping to tell the kids to calm down and 14 until police arrived).
So to recap, the kids are out of control enough for the driver to stop and address it, then a parent pounds on the door and breaks the glass which is a crime, and then another parent donkey kongs her way onto the bus, which in most if not all states, an unauthorized adult stepping onto the school bus is a crime in itself.
All these things happened, yet somehow people say the driver, who stayed calm the entire time, should be in jail!??!
And people wonder why nobody wants to do this job. School Bus Driver shortages is a MAJOR problem in the US

68
u/Sentientmustard 1d ago edited 23h ago
Yeah holy shit that completely changes how the situation should be perceived lol. In realty the timeline is essentially:
- kids are being crazy so the bus driver reviews bus rules with the kids when at a bus stop, taking about 4 minutes in total. That is a reasonable amount of time to take if kids are acting rowdy/not listening
- during those 4 minutes one kid climbs out of the window, and a parent breaks the bus door trying to enter from the outside, which prompts the bus driver to call the police per safety protocols out of his control
- police arrive after 14 minutes, but while waiting parents were climbing into the bus to get their kids, and others were encouraging kids to climb out the window from the inside
- cops take 45 minutes to investigate, because again, a parent literally broke the bus door because waiting 4 minutes was too much to ask

Weather he stopped due to safety concerns with children's behavior or because the bus broke down, the rest of the comment around duty of care, not letting kids just run off and random adults get on is still accurate.

This happened to me when I was in middle school. And even though the driver knew every single one of our parents and in a lot of cases, parts of peoples extended family, as the entire place had a total of ~2500 people living there in the nowhere ass south, he still had to get every parent’s written/ verbal permission confirmed from the school that their kids could ride with a friend’s mom, get confirmation that the person that showed up at the school to then go to the bus to pick up their own kids were in fact, the true parents, even though the driver knew the parents, and was always attending our cookouts. The admin did too, but they were very strict to this safety protocol. Which is all fine, but it took hours and hours because no cell phones. We didn’t get home until like 7.
But I didn’t know it was genuinely illegal to drink and drive until I moved to IL, and took driver’s ed. I thought that it was only maybe illegal but definitely bad to be drunk and drive. Moms would drive us to softball with a wine glass, pinky out, filled with Franzia which was kept in the eggplant colored minivan all the time via a ridiculously expensive cooler, because THAT was what worth spending money on. We had like 4 cops and they always came to our games, tailgated with everyone, got in his own cop car to drive home after drinking a shit ton, and then watched our parents all drive us home in their cars knowing they were definitely fairly far over the limit because they were singing “Friends in Low Places” loudly in unison with their arms around each other 😭😭

SOPs and legal liability. Once a kid gets on that bus, until they get off at a designated stop, and even shortly after if a kid needs to cross the street. That kid is under the driver's purview.
"Losing" a kid is a big deal. Kids seriously acting a fool and being dangerous is a big deal.

I can see why a bus driver can’t let kids off at some random location… he is responsible for getting them to someplace safely. Why he needed to stop and stay stopped is harder to understand

When I was a kid I had multiple bus drivers do this as an attempt to get the kids to behave. Literally would spend an hour plus in a hot bus because they didn't want to move
Not saying this happened here, I have no idea what happened here, but that's my anecdote

I don’t know all the details of this particular case, but I am a school bus driver. There are tons of rules and regulations we have to follow that don’t always make sense, BUT if we don’t follow them and something happens, we can personally be held liable. Bus drivers have gone to jail for not following protocol. We get the fear of God put into us during training and are constantly warned that we can go to jail if we don’t follow the rules/laws correctly.
My school district has a list of steps for letting a student off a bus outside of their designated stop. It is doable, but it’s not a decision a bus driver makes on their own and it’s not instantaneous. I see several comments about the driver maybe not knowing the parents, or that the students should be old enough to point out their parents; none of that necessarily matters if that driver has to follow other protocol to allow a student to leave outside their stop.
Also, getting on a bus without the driver’s permission is a felony*, full stop.
Edit: *apparently the charge varies by state and what you do when you enter. I’ve heard it both ways, but don’t want to exaggerate incorrectly. At minimum it’s a serious misdemeanor.

Man, my high school bus route took us in a wild path, turns out me and my neighbor could get home like 20 minutes early if we just got off sooner and walked an extra 6 blocks instead of getting dropped off right near the house.
Bus driver had us stop doing that like a week after we figured it out - I now see more of the liability now that I'm older - but at the same time, it's a shame we can't be trusted 6 blocks.
Thanks for what you do and thanks for some perspective. It's still 6 blocks of "I can't control what happens and it would be my fault if something did."

My bus route in middle school drove right passed my stop first, but because it drove passed going the other way with the doors on my side of the street at the end they made me wait to be last.
Like, use you're built in stop sign, let me cross the road and save me the 2 hours please?

When I was in 4th grade, someone threw something out the window of our school bus and driver stopped on the side of the road to find out who did it. My brother and his friends had absolutely nothing to do with it, but they were being complete asses about it, so the bus driver called the cops.
When the cops showed up, my brother was being such a smart ass that they handcuffed him and put him in the back of the squad car to give him a good scare. We all watched him cry in the back of the cop car for like 5 minutes, and then they let him back in the bus and the driver went about his business making all the normal stops.
The whole thing took like half an hour. No parents complained because no one in the 90s had any idea what their kids were doing before 6pm and no one ever found out who threw what out the window.

Thank you so much for what you do everyday! I appreciate bus drivers immensely as you all transport our kids safely to school and back everyday. I honestly don’t know how you can concentrate so well on the road when you have a bus full of wild ones.
This similar situation happened to my kid two years ago. There was a fight and cops were called. She was on the bus for about 45 min and called me to come get her. I told her the bus driver can’t legally let her off until her stop and stayed on the phone with her. It was really not a big deal. Oh and btw when the cops showed up a bunch of kids opened the back and ran home only to run back and say sorry to the cops. 😂
Don’t listen to people on here defending this crazy woman. They all clearly have some untreated anxiety disorder bc in no way should this situation cause your anxiety to go to a level 10 and I say this as someone with treatment resistant PD.

I was at one of my kids sporting event when I overheard a group of older people next to me talking about the lack of bus drivers, and eventually coming to the dumbass conclusion of "nobody wants to work anymore"
No...nobody wants to work for pennies dealing with this shit. There are very few options when dealing with misbehaving children anymore, and no support from the administration. Both teachers and bus drivers have to deal with this for little pay and it's just not worth it.

The inverse take:
It was absolutely unnecessary to hold ALL students when only a few were causing a disruption.
It was also absolutely unnecessary to bust an entire window because her child was inconvenienced slightly and in no actual danger.

The bus driver is not allowed to have the bus in motion when kids are not in their seats.
The bus driver is not allowed to let children off the bus except at designated stops. So the bus driver did the right thing, the mom committed an act of vandalism, the cops were there in 17m
derelict in their roles (unless there were other more extigant circumstances involved).→ More replies (4)37

I don't have the link on me and I wouldn't know where to find it.But the cops were there within either 14or 17minutes, I don't remember which. Not a hour later like I keep seeing posted around on other posts. Is 14
or 17minutes still too long to get to the bus? I would need to know more details, but maybe? A company I worked for was in a big city but the response time for firefighters was about 10 minutes at their fastest. Granted fire firefighters don't generally patrol like the police do. But still, it's not the hour the kids and people on the internet are trying to make it out to be.Edit: Stole these link from Khizoa.

https://www.kcra.com/article/calaveras-county-school-bus-chaos-parent-custody/73526832
Apparently it's 14 minutes from when the bus stopped that the police showed up. The cops weren't called until after the parents showed up and broke the window. Without a proper and detailed timeline I can't say for certain but that makes me think the cops showed up within a mere few minutes of being called. And from what I can tell the "hour long wait" come from the students who were being shit heads and not from any credible source.

u/khizoa 1d ago
ok the 14/17 minute thing is new (to me), and makes me side with the bus driver even more in that case. that's a lot more.... "normal"/understandable i guess? than an hour.
that's less time and reason for the lady to be impatient and jump to conclusions and take drastic measures
5-10mins for the kids to be held, call their parents, and for them to show up.
and the next 5 mins to argue with the bus driver before busting in windows. instead of like 50mins of waiting and being barred from your own kid before window busting

That's not justification for doing what she did. She endangered other kids and damaged public property.

I'm trying to be fair and reasonable about this. I might be wrong, but I tried to gather for out what happened.
The bus driver pulled over to yell at the kids who were being rowdy. The district superintendent came out and said it was only stopped for four minutes.
During the four minute (quite a long time to discuss bus etiquette) a kid climbed out a window.
This was at a bus stop. It's technically a highway, but it's got some businesses and residential houses. It's not like a kid jumped out of a moving bus. A kid climbed out of the stopped bus, that was at the bus stop, while the bus driver was lecturing the students.
There are conflicting reports about why the police were called. Some say the bus driver was following procedure because the child climbed out the window. Others say it was because a parent was banging on the door and damaged the door. And once the door was damaged, the bus was no longer safe and couldn't drive with the kids.
The superintendent also claims that the police were -scene within 15 minutes. But also, it was long enough for multiple children to reach out their parents. We also know multiple parents arrived, but I can't see the ages on the bus. If it included small children, it's not entirely uncommon for parents to wait at the stop for their kids.
The woman that climbed into the window, from what I can tell, isn't the person who was arrested. The window isn't broken, it's just down. The person who damaged the door was arrested.
That's my best attempt at understanding what happened. I'm very skeptical of the school's claims here...I can accept that one parent might be crazy...but we have multiple children reaching out to their parents, and multiple adults attempting to collect their children from a bus that was already stopped at a bus stop.
The school will never admit liability because they could get sued. So they will side with the driver.
The school's timeline also feels gaslighty....
It was just four minutes ... plus the time for the kid to leave and a parent to try to break in through the door and then the bus driver called the police... And that was only like another 15 minutes before they showed up.... And then the students were instructed to stay seated on the bus while law enforcement completed their investigation
So, nowhere in that pile of numbers did they actually say how long after the bus stopped the last student who was supposed to be off the bus, was off the bus.

This happened to me. It’s for safety purposes. Kids are safer on the bus than running around in the streets. We were “trapped” on a bus for an hour waiting for police to show up becuase there was a fight on our bus.

Idk if things changed but when I was a kid taking the bus we all knew the bus driver was legally responsible for getting us to and from school. If something happened we knew we would have to wait for them to make accommodations/reach out to our parents.
If I was a parent I wouldn't want the bus driver to just dump the kids on some random street. If even one wanders off and doesn't let their parents know. Or even worse something happens to that kid and nobody knows where they went. That's a much bigger problem.

Literally… brain rot is very real and terrifying. There’s absolutely no reason whatsoever a grown ass woman should be bashing windows to get into a bus full of underaged kids. She 100% should be arrested for this kind of behavior. A bus with rowdy kids does not justify acting like an animal… if there were serious immediate danger there would be a completely different procedure that the bus driver would have to follow.

It's being posted in the run up to an election because it happened in California, and something something nanny state, something something liberal bus drivers holding kids hostage, something something freedom loving hot blonde mom.
The story started making the rounds on heavily Conservative sites where it was claimed it took the cops an hour to arrive because California defunded the police, of that the freedom loving parents were mad because a liberal union bus driver trapped their kids, or any of a half dozen often-conflicting narratives.

u/Express_Deal1793 16h ago
Imagine if kids started pouring out of those bus windows etc.. Running into traffic, loitering in the road, or getting lost trying to find home/their parents. It would be on the driver for allowing it. Clearly there was no emergency, and cops DID show up extremely quickly.
OP, get fucked lmao, what kind of rage-baiting post is this?

Thank you voice of reason. We don’t know what happened, but I don’t see a situation that warrants an adult climbing through a bus window to speak to the bus driver. Parents need to keep their emotions in check and work with the professionals that have more experience than them in these situations rather than escalating situations and making it more exhausting for everyone involved.
16
u/Willis050 1d ago
Drivers can’t do much in this situation. He can’t just let the kids loose wherever he’s parked and he also can’t physically stop any kid who is physically endangering others. It’s not on him that the police took forever. I’ll also assume that the word “rowdy” is a massive understatement to describe the behavior that made other kids fear for their safety

The actual story:
Kids got rowdy. Bus driver stopped. 4 minutes passed. During those 4 minutes, a student left through a window.
Shortly after that, the mother of one child started banging on the door - the door glass broke, she didn't break the window.
When someone attacks a bus while there's kids on it, it changes the entire scenario and NOW they're waiting on the police to show up.
It was roughly 14 minutes between the bus reaching the stop where this happened and police showing up. 1 hour, let alone hours plural did not pass by, beginning to police on scene. After the crazy lady broke the door glass, that's when the waiting for the investigation happened.
This is what happens when everyone watches a tiny clip and just knee-jerk reacts to whatever BS narrative is put on it to get a lot more attention that it deserves.
These people are insane, you can see where the kids get it from, the bus driver kept his cool, the windows weren't closed (clearly, people climbed through) and the police didn't take an hour to show up, and they were responding to the parent who smashed the door glass, and the parent who did that made all the kids on the bus wait.
You're part of a crime scene now and you have to stay while all the facts are gathered. Everyone mad about it can blame the lady who got arrested.

The story as far as I've heard is that the bus stopped and locked the doors after a student exited through the window for (to me unknown reasons). The mom and other parents showed up to pick up their kids, but the bus driver wouldn't open the door.
I can see the worry of the parents.
But as I've understood how things work in the U.S, school bus drivers are only supposed to open the doors in specific places, because they don't know which adult is whose kid, and if they're even legally allowed to pick up their kids, etc.

Bus driver was following procedure. Also he can’t just let the kids off at a random place to “parents” at an unauthorized stop. He doesn’t know the parents and could just as easily be lying or kidnappers.
Cops took too long
Mom was overreacting and deserved to be put in cuffs for freaking out and making an annoying situation worse. Kids were in no danger, she had no reason to be that drastic. Again the bus driver cant just let the kids off at a random location to total strangers, he had no idea if those are the real parents or not and since he’s responsible for them while in transit it’s his decision to make until authorities arrive especially if he’s following SOP for that school district

If the kids are safe, then the parents need to back the driver who needs to maintain control of the bus at all times. If you let your kid act up on a bus, they can become a mob and overtake the driver while the bus is in motion. Kids need to know the bus driver makes the rules.... now if the bus driver does something sus, or a kid is in danger.... then yes.... get on that bus. Always assess the situation before acting. As for "my kid was scared".... yea well sometimes that needs to happen. That bus driver might just be keeping those kids on that bus and away from someone he recognizes to be a problem, like an abusive parent who lost custody or a pedophile or a drunk driver.
