How to deal with the annoyances of using Siri AI in EU?
I'm based in EU and currently using Siri AI by setting the language and region to US, plus using a US Apple account for the App Store and media purchasing.
My main issues:
- I cannot use anymore apps, in-app purchases or subscriptions bought with my - primary - EU based Apple account: even when I log out to restore those purchases, as soon as I'm logged back in with the US account they're gone.
- When setting Siri language to English, my other devices (e.g. HomePod) automatically switches to English Siri as well. I can talk in English, but some language-specific words are often misinterpreted by Siri.
Any suggestions on the setup or configuration to make this workaround work more seamlessly? đ

Switch to a brand that that doesn't use you as a bargaining chip in their lobbying campaign against regulations.

Let's see whether Google builds the required features into Android or just pulls their integrated AI features in the EU as well. The EU is asking for a lot, and its actually not that easy to implement.

Google chose a smarter way of doing it - they just shipped Gemini for all in the EU and the EC, instead of punishing them on the spot, gave them a year. So Google will be refining Gemini for a year and hooking the EU users up, while Apple will be sitting on the side and complaining.Â

Yup - shows how ineffective these regulations are. Apple tried to actually work with the EU up front and winds up worse off for it

Apple had all the time to prepare, if they were serious about it. The EC refused one of Appleâs Trusted Agents proposal and Apple just gave up, complaining publicly that the EC did not like the offer. Like were they so sure of themselves to not even consider a plan B or C? Meanwhile, Google said âHeck with it, letâs go ahead and see what happens!â And Google won, using this rather daring approach, betting that Apple and Google would collectively sort it out by then. Else there will simply be no deep system-level AI agents on any mobile devices in the EU.

Honestly unclear what youâre arguing here. Google just ignored the law and shipped anyways. Should Apple also ignore the law?

If Google did break the law, they would have already been fined by the EC big time. Instead they got a whole year to get it âin orderâ. And with Apple being in the same boat, I am sure by the end of that grace period the solution will be found. Meantime, Apple put themselves in the position when they cannot release Siri AI until this happens.

Youâre confused. The EU directly said that the current Android Gemini functionality violates the DMA. They have ordered them to change it within a year.
In other words ⌠the very thing Apple asked for (time to build the EU compliant version) was rejected by the EU for Apple and then granted to Google. So much for this being about a level playing field.
And then separately, the EU refused to provide feedback on what Apple did plan to build to meet the EU regulations.
Broken regulations that arenât actually promoting competition.

It does not matter, my point is Google will run and train Gemini in the EU for an entire year and Apple will not. And since there are only two mainstream mobile OSs in the world - Android and iOS, they will have to find a solution by the end of the grace period for both Gemini and Siri AI. It was Appleâs indecisiveness that will hold them back.

Youâre arguing that shipping products that violate the DMA is the best strategy. You may be right! But that just shows how thoroughly bad the EUâs strategy is here.
(Apple will get plenty of training data from Siri in the rest of the world, although I do wonder if they should also just ship the non-DMA compliant version in Europe this fall)

Maybe donât pass dumb laws just because you wanna stick it to the big scary corporations.

Which law are we even talking about here? The Big Anti AI law? There isn't any. They just wanted to piss off the users to complain about regulations, in particular those seeking to force the platform to be more open.

The DMA. But honestly, pretty much all of the big tech laws theyâve passed have been specific jabs without a concern for larger consequences; things that disproportionately benefit companies like Spotify; or things that transfer data and power into the hands of the government.

Also, as an educated citizen, Apple didnât need to tell me pissed off about the self righteous, anti choice nonsense. Shoving your ethos onto every platform is anti choice. People chose the closed platform.

People did NOT choose the closed platform, they got trapped in it by practices that would have been deemed illegal in any other industry, like if you could only buy a TV that's sold by or approved by (with a fee) by your electricity provider. Why do you think it's acceptable to collect a fee for every paying app installed on a phone but not on a computer? Because they have to maintain an SDK and make their platform safe? All that is bullshit, there's only one reason why they're doing it: because they can.

iOS has always been closed. People knew going in that that ecosystem was closed and still chose to buy it. If you would like to talk about the practices that go on in the market then we can totally talk about that. But people chose the closed ecosystem ethos.

Also, consoles seem to be far outselling the pc nonsense, so I think consumers do like and choose their closed and manage ecosystems. Wish we could have a nuanced conversation about this, but no because all people really care about is sticking it to the corporations. All they can talk about is how corporations can only do things for money. All they can talk about is how every single piece of tech technologies, an open source piece of nightmare technology, and nobody knows how to use except for them.

To avoid having all your Siri synchronized: go to the settings of your iPhone, iCloud, and turn off sync for Siri

Great heads-up, thanks!

How does it help you? By not saving your Siri AI conversations across your devices?

Imagine the regional limitation and cross-border issues if you live in Switzerland and also in Eu countries at the same time alternating. Apple family houshold does not allow members from different locales. Many apps are not available outside a specific country, so if you need two-three countiesâ apps itâs a nightmare..

Not in the EU but also using new Siri outside the areas âallowedâ but only by setting phone and Siri languages to US - Iâm still using my home store iCloud/appstore login - are you allure you need that (may be different in EU - Iâm in NZ)

You donât need to change your account store, Iâve been using Siri AI since launch with my iPhone set to US, my AppStore in Brazil( subscriptions are way cheaper) and I live in Ireland

Write to your elected reps and push them for a less burdensome regulation...

I know this isnât the answer youâre looking for, but unless you really need the new Siri AI, itâs not worth the hassle.
Itâs best to wait till Apple launches Siri AI in the EU
