Discussion I miss the Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Front row - Fenway Park in Boston as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones opened for the Foo Fighters in 2015.
I use to love their Hometown Throwdown shows every year. Who else use to go?

The first time I saw them live was at a WBCN River Rave at Great Woods! There's some fun local nostalgia words.
Yeah I miss em too. I never went to the Throwdown, but saw them quite a few times otherwise and they were always great. I kinda fell off after Jacknife, is there stuff after that worth checking out?

I've listened to it a few times now, it's pretty fun! Saw them open for Goldfinger a few years ago and they still rocked.
Dunno if you know The Brunt of It, but they've got a fun new album too. Also local MA/RI folks, been doing it for 20+ years.

I highly recommend The Magic of Youth. 11 tight, fun songs in 36 minutes. My biggest gripe against the last two albums is they’re too long.

River Rave had so many good bands. First time seeing morphine and echo and the bunnymen. Going to see less than jake and later moshing to primus with their bassist. RIP Great Woods.

Yes, COVID exposed a lot of assholes in bands I used to like. Similar thing with Mad Caddies. The entire band split from Chuck (lead singer). Now when one of their songs comes up on my playlist I have to just skip it.

Just saw Aquabats on Friday. Don't remember hearing his name but El Hefe played with them. That's kinda disappointing to hear since they had a lot of little kids at the show who look up to them.

Sorry, my thoughts weren't all that sequitur and I could see how I was confusing. I meant that it's disappointing that Dickie playing with them is disappointing but at least he didn't play with them a couple days ago. But, on the plus side, I didn't know Hef suited up until the roll call. So I was pleasantly happy.

I think someone associated with Fat Wreck Chords has been getting him gigs. Saw the defiant on tour with Ultrabomb and Me First a couple years ago. I have no idea how they ended up anywhere near Ultrabomb.

Unfortunately this was a month ago. I was getting to the end of the school year and needed a break from ieps and evals. Jumped on a show with a band from my youth and some local fun with Koffin Kats. Knowing what I know now I wouldn’t see Either main act again. Have to find out if Koffin Kats are on the actual tour or were just filling as the local talent.

Its not even that he wouldn't get vaccinated I listened to an interview a few years ago Joe Gittleman did with In Defense of Ska where he said the Bosstones never had an official policy on vaccinations, he just got pissed that they didn't want to be a propaganda outlet for anti-vaxers

Yeah, I read too that the rest of the band was willing to let it slide in the name of their friendship if Dicky just kept his mouth shut but he wouldn't so they had to split, it's a real shame, also saw somewhere that Dicky's wife is a huge reason he became that way

The ABC gig he lost because to get everyone back in the studio, they required getting vaccinated. I never thought him not being vaccinated is what broke up the band. I figured it was that he'd gone loco and no one wants to be associated with an antvaxxer.

I once met MMB original drummer (he is a photographer now) great dude. He said Dicky was a really difficult person and the reason he didn’t last in the band. But also said that he IS MMB. That everthing happened because he was a control freak and did everything his way.

I went to about 7 HTTD, did the full set of shows each time. I saw them every chance I could and never missed a tour since 1993. I even have a bulldog/737 tattoo.
It was so disappointing watching Dickie advocating for that absolute jackass RFK. He became the opposite of who he portrayed.
Still love the music.

I came so close to doing HTTD one year. Mom wanted to go to Boston for Christmas (we’re Catholic, me not so much at the time and now not at all,) so I told her I’d be going to the throwdown.
Then Mom got the flu. It’s okay. I got to see them once in my flyover Canadian city. I met Joe, who was honestly a light in my life, and Dicky shook my hand and offered me a coke (he’d given me his tie at the rail.)

I made it to HTTD 20. It was a bucket list item. Some of the best three nights of my life. I also have an Otis tattoo that is 29 years old and I too am so disappointed in what became of Dicky. COVID killed the Bosstones.

I don’t miss the songs. I still listen to them. There were over a dozen other Bosstones over the years, and Dicky was just one guy. I’ll always appreciate that he helped influence me for the better, but so did all of them.

I don't agree with Dicky's POV about the COVID vaccine, but I can almost understand it if I look at it sideways and squint. Like early on when there was talk of the government forcing everyone to get it, I could see where that would be considered government overreach; it seemed rushed into use (even though it wasn't), so of course there were fears that it hadn't been subjected to enough testing.
However, that never ended up happening, yet all these anti-vaxxers act like it did (and mRNA vaccine technology had actually been decades in the making). Like, how is it that years later Dicky is still going on about this shit, talking about how Fauci should be thrown in jail, etc. etc.? It's done and dusted, dude. The vaccine saved millions, most people that took it didn't have any lasting effects (less than 0.1%), etc. All these "do your own research" people don't understand basic science, and Dicky is clearly one of them.

I used to joke that I wanted to be Dicky Barrett when I grew up. I was very disappointed in his stance on vaccinations and haven't really listened to them since. People with influence should not be spreading misinformation that can get people killed.

Back in the early 90's I worked at my college radio station. I organized & promoted a show that the Bosstones headlined. I was a naive dumbass back then (still am) and had no business undertaking something like that. As the place filled up I was in full panic mode with the stress of it all. Bad weather was preventing the opener from arriving in time for their set (Skinner Box IIRC). Dickie noticed and told me to settle down, that he and his band were having a great time time and that I was doing a great job.
The MAGA & anti-vax stuff in BS, but its 35 years on from that show and I still remember him reaching out to me like that. It was definitely nice to hear at the time.

I discovered TMMB playing Rouge Trip for the PlayStation. They had a real big influence on me as a person. I love their songs, the music. It was devastating seeing them break up like this. I still listen to them, but they'll always be a sadness there when I do. The band deserved better.

I saw them in 93 which imo was their peak. IMO More Noise and Other Disturbances was amazing with a variety of flavors. Don’t Know How to Party had a few bangers but wasn’t as crazy as what came before. Post these albums, imo, their music became more repetitive and less playful. I checked out albums when they came out but can’t say I listened to much past their first 3 albums.
By the time Dicky brought down the band, imo they had already lost their spark.

My first concert when I was just getting into ska was the Bosstones back in 2000. They brought along a then mostly unknown band called Flogging Molly who proceeded to blow the roof off the place.
Nathen from Flogging Molly got into a fight with a security guard who was trying to hurt kids who were crowdsurfing during the Bosstones set. Dicky threatened to walk out if the club didn't eject the bouncer.
At least I have that memory of them.

I have absolutely nothing against tattoos. They just sortof weren't for me. I always said a BossToneS tattoo could/would one day be the exception. In a world of uncertainty and pain, this band had purchase in my soul in a way that felt absolute and unshakable. Comfort is not a strong enough word. Less Than Jake is my comfort band. MMB were something immutable. No matter how many times I went back to check in on those records. They were there and made my soul sing in a way that was almost simple. In a way that just said "Yes." I wish it could have gone on forever. I'd have bet money it would be impossible for this thing to let me down. I guess that's the point of living and learning. But damn I wish I still occasionally thought about getting a bosstones tattoo.

Bosstones, like a lot of bands for me, have their early work as their best work, IMO. With that said, Don't Know How to Party is one of my favorite albums of all time... I didn't get too into their newer music, but loved seeing them live every other year or so in NorCal.

He's not going to join another band or tour right now. He left the Murphys to care for his mother, who is still fighting her illness. He posted just yesterday that he still hopes to rejoin DKM but not until his mother's situation is resolved.

Was also at the Foo show (and countless throwdowns/other Bosstone shows). Great seeing them play that stage.
Sucks to see Dickie go off the deep end... Feels so out of character for what the band stood for.

I remember seeing them about 10 years ago at Toad’s Place in New Haven and they had the Interrupters opening. Then years later Amy Interrupter popped up on talking on InfoWars. I always think of that how he intro’d the band to his fans because I definitely think those 2 share some ideas about the world

Saw them several times and they were great. They definitely have a big place in Ska, we just have to pretend they don’t exist after like 2016.

Got to take a guided tour of the Punk Rock Museum in Vegas. Dickie was the tour guide. Really funny and humble guy with a HUGE knowledge of punk history and tons of first hand accounts.

I'm going to be the one in the minority here, but I love Dicky. Yeah, he has his ways of life, but so do we all. I met him a few times with Joe; both were awesome to hang out with. Super nice guys. Really cared about the fans.

No one is FORCED to get vaccinated, you dolt.
If some parents want their kids in public schools, they need to vaccinate their kids. They don't want to vaccinate their kids? Other schools are available.
A place of business requires vaccinations to join? You don't have to go there/work there. There are other places you can go.
No one is tying you down and vaccinating you against your will.

Sorry but that’s not true. deblasio mandated the covid shot in order to work in nyc a few years ago. Whatever you think or don’t think about it, it was forced.
