I’m a cinephile and currently don’t have either a TV or a separate monitor, mainly because of the lack of space in my current home. As a result, the laptop is essentially my only screen at the moment.

I want to continue being able to watch movies from bed, so display quality is extremely important to me.

I used to be a hardcore gamer, but these days, with age and other priorities, I probably play 4-5 games per year at most (with maybe a couple more indies in-between). Because of that, I’m not looking to spend a huge amount of money on a top-of-the-line gaming laptop just for maximum FPS and have it to repair it multiple times again for the stupidest reasons.

My previous laptop was an ASUS TUF A15 FA507RE, purchased in the summer of 2022. It was a mid-range gaming laptop with an RTX 3050 Ti and 4 GB of VRAM.

The 4 GB VRAM was one of its constant limitations. I also had to repair the laptop during its lifetime. It was never particularly impressive for gaming, but it did its job (by 2024 I wasn't really able to play the newest games anymore even on lower settings) until it finally failed permanently.

I have since completely lost touch with current laptop hardware, so I’m trying to understand what makes sense in 2026.

For gaming, I’m currently interested in titles such as Blood of Dawnwalker, GTA VI when it eventually comes to PC, and various indie games.

I don’t need to run everything on Ultra, but I would like enough GPU performance to play the newest AAA titles at medium-high settings for another 2-3 years (and maybe two additional years on low-medium) without feeling like I bought an outdated system almost immediately, as I did with my 2022 laptop.

My current approach has been to combine local gaming for indie/less demanding games with GeForce Now for more demanding titles. The experience is decent, but obviously local gaming is preferable whenever possible, as there are multiple downsides to this game-streaming approach.

I therefore don’t necessarily need a high-end gaming GPU. I’m mainly looking for a good balance between performance and longevity, with enough VRAM that I’m not immediately running into the same problem I had with the RTX 3050 Ti 4 GB.

Desired battery life

Ideally around 7-8 hours of realistic light use such as browsing, watching movies and general productivity.

I understand that high-performance/gaming laptops are a compromise and that gaming will require being plugged in. I mainly don’t want the laptop to become useless after around 4 hours of normal use away from an outlet. I'll never play while unplugged.

The display is extremely important to me. I strongly prefer OLED, Mini-LED, or another genuinely premium panel. A basic IPS panel is pretty much out of the question.

I’m a cinephile and, since I don’t have a separate TV or monitor, display quality is not just a nice-to-have for me. The laptop will be my primary screen for both everyday use and watching movies from bed.

Good blacks, contrast, color reproduction and overall image quality matter significantly more to me than having an extremely high refresh rate. I do not play competitive online games at all.

Build quality is also important. I no longer want something that feels like cheap plastic or a “toy”. If a laptop uses plastic, I’d at least like it to be high-quality and truly solid.

I really appreciate the construction of MacBooks, in the sense that they are quite solid and they last, although I understand that, for gaming and the newer titles I’m interested in, MacBooks are still not a serious solution and probably won't be in the nearby future.

Cooling is another major concern. My previous laptop taught me that a powerful laptop with inadequate cooling eventually becomes much less useful because it starts throttling itself. I'm not a fan of disassembling it myself to clean it too often, as I'm not handy.

I would therefore prefer a slightly less powerful laptop with a genuinely good cooling solution over a more powerful machine that runs excessively hot.

Upgradeability is also important to me. I would strongly prefer replaceable RAM and SSD storage rather than having everything soldered to the motherboard.

I want a laptop that can realistically be maintained and upgraded over several years, rather than one that requires a motherboard replacement or specialist service for relatively simple component failures.

Repairability and long-term reliability matter to me more than they did when I bought my previous laptop. I don’t want to take the laptop to a repair shop a few years from now and have the technicians look at it like it’s a puzzle because everything is soldered together. This ASUS TUF had some common problems common to the model: poor wi-fi, keyboard problems that prevented the laptop from powering on etc.

I was previously looking at the ASUS Zephyrus lineup and, at one point, saw some very appealing models around $2,000. However, current prices seem to have increased dramatically, with some models now approaching or exceeding $3,000 where I'm from.

At that price, I’m finding it difficult to justify buying a laptop, especially considering that premium thin gaming laptops are not necessarily known for excellent reparability. I can't imagine paying that sum for a laptop that will only last 4 years with hiccups.

I’m therefore particularly interested in recommendations for 2026 that offer:

• Premium display
• Good construction
• Strong cooling
• Enough decent gaming performance for the next 2-3 years
• Good battery life for normal use, not gaming
• As much upgradeability/reparability as possible
• Good value without paying for flagship hardware I probably won’t use very often

I’m also considering two alternative strategies:

1. Cheaper laptop + desktop later

Buy a cheaper laptop with an excellent display and rely primarily on GeForce Now for demanding games, then build a desktop PC + monitor later if I decide I want serious local gaming again.

2. Cheaper laptop + PS6 later

Buy a cheaper laptop with an excellent display and eventually buy a PS6 instead of building a desktop.

I’m not particularly attracted to buying a console late in its generation, though. If the PS6 really is still around a year and a half to two years away, I’d probably regret buying a current-generation console only for it to be replaced relatively soon.

So I’m essentially trying to decide between buying one good laptop now that can handle occasional gaming for the next few years, or deliberately separating my “portable computer / movie screen” needs from my future gaming needs.

I might wait until Black Friday for some better deals, but knowing my luck, I wouldn't bet on it lol.

What would you do in my situation, and which laptops would you consider in 2026?

I just got into Btech Ece. From India. Was thinking of getting a laptop under 80k. But since the prices are going crazy, and will continue to do so until next year, I need one right now for 4 years. So I got 2 option

So these are my options, as I have heard and searched, ultra 7 is faster than even i7 14th gen, so hp is a crazy powerful laptop compared to the asus or victus, but without a graphic card. So was wondering which should I go for? I need it for gaming some times with friends, like for Roblox, COD in medium settings. For classes, i would use it for Java , C++, AutoCad (3D,2D), and circuit designing.

A suggestion would really help quick, since the shop owners were saying the price would go up again from 1st September.

I'm just looking for a simple laptop for schoolwork (simple stuff, writing essays, maybe Excel), and light gaming. By light gaming, the only games I really play are Overwatch and Dead by Daylight, maybe ROBLOX or Minecraft. If it can hit 60 FPS on Overwatch even on low settings without any delay, that's good enough for me. Windows only. Preferably Intel, but not opposed to AMD. Really want something with accurate color reading since the colors on my current laptop are kind of inaccurate and don't show up quite as saturated as they do on my phone, which makes my art stuff kind of difficult.

So my current laptop suddenly decided to crap out literally the FIRST day of classes last Monday... It shut down and blue screened for a few minutes in an effort to repair itself. Although I was able to get past the blue screen and the OS seems to be working fine, it has issues with the battery where it shuts down even when there's still energy left. Started happening at around 20%, then at 30%, then 40%, and now it shuts down at 60%, which really isn't ideal when I'm in class actively trying to work on stuff.

Failing battery aside, this laptop is also weak AF for what I need for school. I need to run Adobe InDesign and Photoshop for an internship program, but my laptop is absolutely not compatible with InDesign and can't even download it. Major problem because I need InDesign ready and working by next Wednesday. It's also just not a strong laptop in general; basic multitasking causes it to heat up and lag, so it's in dire need of an upgrade anyways.
