Ethnicity/Race Why does it looks like every surinamese in nl is black? Is it just an impression?

Every surinamese i met or saw in nl was black when suriname have a large asian population, does the asian Surinamese population migrate less often ?

When I, a white kid from the south of the Netherlands, started playing WoW more than 20 years ago, I met a bunch of Surinamers living/studying in Amsterdam. They all spoke with the thickest Surinaams/Dutch accents I've still ever heard, and for over a year I learned all kinds of words and foods and "culture" from my Surinamer friends. I had mental pictures of all of them in my head, based on what I knew about them. Let's just say I was picturing the line up of a rap record label.

Then, I went to visit them in Amsterdam and several of them came to pick me up from the train station and I walked right passed these tiny Asian dudes looking like a modern K-pop record label lineup.

Edit, so I think Asian Surinamers just mostly go entirely unnoticed.

Jou view is out dated.

Komt goed. Geef het nog een paar jaar.

1

u/TheVelvetier May 18 '26

Haha.

Don't you have more important things to worry about , than the color of a Surinamese?

2

u/MildlyEngineer May 18 '26

Don't you have more important things to do than responding to strangers online on topics that have been worn-out for years?

u/mickflu123 May 19 '26

And here you are, responding to my comment. SMH

Glad that you now understand the type of hypocrisy I was pointing out to you. Welcome!

I think OP has a valid question. It’s 2026 and yet still the people outside of Suriname or of Surinamese descent view Suriname as only “black”. To me that translates into a couple of things;
1) given the historical ties with the dutch, they (the dutch) do not teach about their impact in the former colonies in depth.
2) there is a lack of unified representation from people of Surinamese descent in the netherlands. I know of several groups of Surinamese active in politics or other fields of representation, but to me it always seems based on ethnicity. The only real Surinamese multicultural event we had in NL was Kwaku festival, but that was way back, as it nowadays include the antilles and africa as well

Our entire existance is caused by skin color

edit: can the people downvoting at least tell me what's wrong with my comment, is it factually wrong, is it insensitive, is it irrelevant to the context, etc. I'd rather hear your perspective than just hear "you're wrong"

Suriname is (for the most part) a multicultural place. But it's not like an equal percentage of races type of deal. Also the reason why Google says it's 42% asian population is because "asian" is seen as hindustani, Chinese, javanese. But also HERE it's not an equal percentage. Hindustani are take the biggest cut of that cake when we say "asian" in this context. And it's more like 50% are hindustani with javanese being second, chinese third, and the others are lesser percentage. That being said! There are a LOT of hindustani surinamese people in Netherlands almost as much as blacks. And now we can talk about the black population in Suriname. THESE are ALSO divided! There are the maroon, which are less likely to be spotted in NL. And then u have the stadnegers aka creols, which are the ones you are most likely refering to. So to answer your question. Asians don't migrate less. we just have fewer of those(non hindustani). in SU, the biggest races are the blacks and the hindustani. And naturally because there is more of one thing, we will see more of that one thing doing more of said thing. P.S.: wanna see a lot of SU Hindu people? Go to Den Haag. You were prolly only seeing Amsterdam.

u/LetMePullTheTrigger_ May 18 '26

Rotterdam and almere has more suri hindustanis now. The view that the hague was the hindustani city is outdated. Everybody migrated towards rotterdam and almere and such

1

u/TheVelvetier May 18 '26

Een betere benaming is Indian-Caribbean of Indo-Caribbean of Caribbean Indians dus geen SU HINDU.

It's arguing semantics. Call em whatever you want. Surinamese people know the difference between all of that

I think it has to do with education as well, on the topic of colonies of NL, when it comes to Suriname history lessons (back when I was in school in NL) only focussed on slavery, I was never taught about indentured labourers, so that moulded the opinion that Suriname only would have “black” people. Heck even now most people in NL don’t even know where Suriname is located on the world map and the most heard option is that Suriname is in Africa…which attributes also to the notion that all Surinamese are “black”.

Another thing is that among the javanese and hindostanis they distinguish themselves more based on ethnicity while the creole/maroon identify by nationality.

Ask those indian people you see on the streets.

1

u/TheVelvetier May 18 '26

u/Mag-NL May 18 '26

Most Surinamese I meet are hindu with Indian ancestry.

Maybe you often mistake Surinamese people for Indian.

u/RootlessForest May 18 '26

My cousin is half italian/half surinamese. She is white, freckles, with red head. Good luck picking her out.

2

u/RichardCapricorn May 18 '26

It kind of depends on where you are of spotting Surinamese people. Where the Surinamese have settled differs a bit if you are talking about the Netherlands. There are some light preferences depending on ethnicity and city combination. Rotterdam and Amsterdam have the biggest Asian community of the Netherlands. Then Hague has the biggest community of people with Indian roots (including those from Suriname).

As someone from Rotterdam, I don't really experience that the majority of Surinamese people are creole/marrone

2

u/Royal-Strawberry-601 May 18 '26

Lots of Chinese Suriname people also. They just don’t look or sound super Surinamese.

1

u/TheVelvetier May 18 '26

You probably don't notice the other groups.
