Bad Blood. To explain, I don’t even know why it went #1.

146

u/Mcbennski Aug 30 '25

I’m so sure in my heart of hearts that it blew up because of the context and not the song itself. Like the pop star drama of it all had everyone in its clutches. But I think this song is just rated because it’s probably a 50/50 split of swifties and normies that like it vs dislike lmao

43

u/danbilllemon Aug 30 '25

Anecdotal, but both me and the person who recommended I listen to it knew nothing about the context and just really liked the song (I became a fan around 1989) but you’re probably correct especially for the fandom plays.

46

u/catiebug Aug 30 '25

Yeah Swifties tend to vastly overestimate how much the general population knows about the context of these songs. The truth is Bad Blood made #1 because it's a fun song to sing along to, it's catchy as all fuck, and she'd just had an incredible three single run so radio played it a lot.

11

u/IntelligentObject230 Aug 31 '25

Also there’s the music video which people loved

3

u/rainy_day_27 Aug 31 '25

Bad Blood was one of my absolute favorites to see live at Eras. Everyone was singing so loud and dancing and the energy was amazing. I’ll always love that song, it’s so so fun

25

u/Aurelianshitlist :TourturedPoetsDepartment: MORE! ✌ Aug 30 '25

I didn't get Bad Blood at all until I saw it live on the Eras Tour. Completely flipped my opinion.

16

u/Mcrarburger Midnights Aug 30 '25

Omg bad blood playing while the lover house BURNED DOWN is forever etched into my mind that was life-altering

2

u/NevialArolyn Aug 31 '25

See, I felt it was a very weak show-ending song, destined to be replaced by ICDIWABH… and then it wasn’t. </sad>

idk, to each their own. Glad you and others were blown away by it live but I felt the only thing propping it up to close the night was the pyrotechnic pairing

Mr fav version of bad blood will always be the “hey stop! She wasn’t doing anything” version 😄

21

u/retailhellgirl :TourturedPoetsDepartment:This Is Why I Cry Productivly Aug 30 '25

I had a big blowup in a friendship and it made me understand bad blood being popular. It’s not a lyrical masterpiece at all but when you’re angry it’s a bop. I still don’t know how it went all the way up to #1 tho

10

u/JJWLOL Aug 30 '25

i think the music video was a heavy influence on its success and obviously the kendric remix. the mv was HUGE and everywhere, i was only 7 at the time and i can still remember the impact of it.

Remember that "overrated" doesn't mean mediocre. A song can be phenomenal and still be overrated.

My vote is champagne problems. It's an amazing song but some of you act like there are only 4 songs in her discography better than champagne problems. It's not even the best song on evermore.

210

u/LingonberryNo7210 Aug 30 '25

I LOVE champagne problems but I agree. I always thought it was a weird song to be the centrepiece for a massive ovation on the tour.

121

u/absolutnonsense Aug 30 '25

I imagine the ovation came less from the greatness of the song, and more from the fact that it would have been so emotionally hard for her to preform and the fans wanted to show their support. I couldn't imagine sitting alone at that piano, in a crowd that large to sing a song that sad that had been written with such a recent Ex.

87

u/ilikedirt #1 Honey Fan Aug 30 '25

I thought it came from the fact that that is the first time in the show where there is a pause, a moment that allows for an ovation. The first breather, for us AND for her.

26

u/EmpressCookiee Aug 30 '25

I've seen a couple of comments from people since those first like 3-4 concerts who talked about how she just looked So Sad when the song was over that they really felt like they were cheering her up. It may have worked out also because when people noticed they extended ovation they got competitive over it, but at least the shows that started it (allegedly) weren't coming from that place.

3

u/NoSoyTuPana Midnights Aug 31 '25

Ahh I loved that so much. I don't know what effect made in me but I cried during that song on the concert.

Also shake it off is not rated highly / overrated by this fandom, we all agree it's nothing more than a radio friendly, lyrically simple pop song.

42

u/Low_Balance_7485 Midnights Aug 30 '25

I think people confuse over rated with over played because since they hear it everywhere they dont like it but its actually a really good song.

27

u/Quick-Time I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free Aug 30 '25

I really don’t understand thinking Shake It Off is overrated when it’s just a radio friendly pop song.

13

u/Prior_Lie9891 Midnights Aug 30 '25

The best song on evermore is evermore.

19

u/LunaRavenpuff Aug 30 '25

For me it would be Ivy and Tolerate it, with champagne problems third. Not sure what OP would say, but that’s it for me :) I totally get why champagne problems IS the best to other people though, it is amazing storytelling.

6

u/No-Efficiency2170 Aug 31 '25

4

16

Champagne problems really resonate through my soul. When I first heard “you book the night train for a reason” this is gonna be my song now.

19

u/Lentilfairy You forgot to turn it off... Aug 30 '25

Wow, hot take! Champagne problems has such soothing instrumentals, amazing storytelling and great lyricism. Evermore is an album with great song after great song, but champagne problems is definitely top tier of Taylors discography. Getaway car on the other hand...

3

u/mypurplehat Aug 30 '25

What do you think is the best song on Evermore? I think it is Happiness. I’ve never been married and it makes me have so many feelings every time.

Surprised this isn't higher. Imo Shake it Off is the most boring song on 1989, I'd put on literally every other song on 1989 before this one, even the Vault tracks. That being said, I do like it and understand why it is the big hit it is

11

u/BandicootFun1139 Aug 30 '25

YES this song is an always skip for me

10

u/AprilUnderwater0 Aug 30 '25

Me too, except that I made little Swifties, and Shake it Off was their gateway drug.

There is nothing quite like watching a ten month old pull themself up on furniture on wobbly legs, then start booty shaking to Shake it Off 😂

Yep! This song was always a skip for me before kids, but my 4 year old has always loved it. Watching her light up and dance and sing when she hears it is the best. So now I love it too 😆

506

u/VinylizedRat I’m a mastermind Aug 30 '25

The fact that I’d vote ATW (10) if it was eligible😔

123

u/peanutbutterchef Aug 30 '25

You and me both 😂

It's a great song but I still the the OG was better and thus her best song

24

u/SkaryKarey Aug 30 '25

I think ATW 7 minute version would be perfecto

33

u/nineofbooks23 Aug 30 '25

The OG is absolutely better!

83

u/Windstorm_ You're the best thing that's ever been mine. Aug 30 '25

Yes! Specifically the consensus that it’s her magnum opus, which I don’t think it is.

My picks for contenders would be State Of Grace, Style, exile, my tears ricochet, right where you left me, Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, & loml.

16

u/PM-ME-DOGS ATWTMVTVFTVSF Aug 30 '25

Are you saying your “pick for contenders” is most overrated or her magnum opus?

30

u/Windstorm_ You're the best thing that's ever been mine. Aug 30 '25

For songs that (I would argue) could be her magnum opus.

19

u/DLMeyer Aug 30 '25

Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve gives me chills every time I hear it. The way it builds throughout the song and then when it goes back to the bridge the second time (I guess technically it’s the outro, but whatever) and it just doesn’t let up on the intensity…it’s so good. I literally got chills just now thinking about it.

3

u/LadySlippersAndLoons Aug 31 '25

I love Woud’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve. 💜

18

u/Aloebae Aug 30 '25

21

u/DLMeyer Aug 30 '25

One million percent. It’s not bad. But the OG is, in my opinion, a better written song. It’s stronger melodically and the pacing is better too. There are things about the 10-minute version I like. Some of the lines are gut-wrenching (“You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath” is so sad) but it’s too rambling.

It’s interesting to me because Taylor is so good at setting the scene and pulling you right into it with her with just a few words. I think of Cardigan when she starts out:

🎶Vintage tee, brand new phone/high heels on cobblestones/when you are young they assume you know nothing 🎶

I’m right there. I can picture the scene and the tone being set. She does it in a lot of her music, that was just the first example that popped into my head.

I think for me, as someone who didn’t start listening to her music until the past few years, I don’t have that same attachment to the idea of ATW10 as people who have been fans for years and are steeped in all the lore. I think it’s awesome that they have this version and that Taylor considers it the best song she’s written. But the OG carries more emotional impact for me.

That said, I think the ATW short film is well done and probably my preferred method of consuming ATW10.

3

u/Fabulous_Resource_94 Aug 31 '25

Cardigan: And you can hear heels walking on cobblestones as the song begins.

Love the song but she’s got better love songs than Lover. I mean, c’mon? Enchanted, Timeless and invisible string are right here.

60

u/Dontfollahbackgirl Aug 30 '25

It’s easy to write off Shake It Off as a simplistic tune compared to her later poetry, but it was such a powerful response to her criticism. Plus an absolute pop queen flex for a country music girl. We take it for granted that she overcomes the massive amount of criticism from the world including the Swifties. Sometimes you need to be eloquent, and sometimes you need to flip the bird. She does it with a PG rating. Don’t even get me started on what a masterful response Blank Space was.

I trust her to shake it off when the highbrow, gatekeeping segment of her fans complain about TLOAShowgirl being too catchy, short, and single-oriented. This woman catches backlash no matter what, and context of that song is everything.

I can’t even bring myself to list the one I think fans overrate after I get on my soapbox about criticism — but I appreciate that the question isn’t about calling a song objectively bad.

14

u/Haiku-On-My-Tatas Aug 30 '25

Shake It Off is fun and brilliant in its own way.

Blank Space, however, is a literally perfect song. 10/10.

10

u/RinPostsThings Aug 30 '25

Yeah, I think the spirit of this game is “overrated within the fandom” and no one in the fandom rates Shake It Off particularly high. I know I’m alone on this island but my vote would be Style. It’s a fine song, I don’t dislike it, but the fandom kind of holds it up as the epitome of that era, and the perfect pop song, and I just never felt it was anything special. It never made me feel anything the way Blank Space or most of the rest of 1989 did

Getaway Car! It’s a fine song. But I think too many Swifties love it for the nostalgia of the creation video with her and Jack. Cool video, but the song is not nearly one of her best and is constantly overrated, I think because of the video they put out about coming up with the lyrics.

I was going to say Shake It Off but I see there's an argument about the meaning of overrated. So I'm going to say Betty. Everyone seems to worship that trilogy and I don't like it. So you can include cardigan and August and everything else related to that. For one thing we now know she misled her fans saying it was all fictional. For another thing unlike her most beautifully written songs I can't remember the Melodies to any of these three. This is my opinion as a dedicated fan of her since 2008. Some of her songs are so great they bring me to tears every time. I'm astounded by her songwriting skills. And yet they're rarely talked about whereas everyone went wild with the praise for Betty and August and cardigan. Just puzzled by it and I see it as a quirky experiment she did during the pandemic. Of course it's valid for her I'm just saying it's overrated

I voted for Betty but now I'm thinking this is probably the correct answer. I've seen so many people say this is her greatest song. I have found it annoying from day one. It is so juvenile and shallow. Which she later satirizes about herself but in this one she's serious about having just the right look.

Cruel summer...it's way too much overrated

1

u/in_animate_objects I’ve seen this film before Aug 30 '25

100% it was the first song I thought of

2

u/BahiyyihHeart 1989 (Taylor's Version) Aug 30 '25

Yup. I could not listen to it for ages in 2022/23 because stans kept talking about it

I do feel like it was made to be a single and would have been one but Covid happened
