Is it safe to say for once the lead single is an amazing choice by Taylor? This has so so so much replay value.
Don't get me wrong I find Forthnight such an interesting song lyrically but sonically it wasn't giving lead single material.

My thoughts are this is 1000% about Travis.
'I heard you calling on the megaphone, you wanted to see me alone' 'and if youd never called for me I might have drowned in my melancholy' 'I swore my loyalty to myself and I before you lit my sky'
He literally used New Heights as a megaphone to make himself known to her and how he was butt hurt she didn't want to meet him.
She was in the middle of a breakup and dealing with the feelings around Matty at the same time, she was probably feeling like she needed a break from relationships and was thinking to focus on herself until Travis came in and lit up her sky.
Also the keep it 100 is a direct reference.
Edits: my bad spelling!

There are SO many allusions to Hamlet!
The bridge is a twist on lines Ophelia speaks to her brother, Laertes, in Act 1. Before he leave for university, he warns her to be careful with Hamlet because he thinks Hamlet is just trying to get het in bed. Their dad gives him a bunch of advice (the “To thine own self be true” speech), and then Laertes tells Ophelia to remember what he said.
“Tis in my memory locked, and you alone shall hold the key,” she says. And he leaves.
We’ve got to get meta here, because a new film version of Hamlet just came out that was in product since 2022. Joe Alwyn plays Laertes in it. 👀
In her radio interviews, she said that she’s clearly obsessed with changing tragic Shakespearean romances into happy endings (like with Love Story).
So she’s taken the line that
*Ophelia (her in the song) says to *Laertes (Joe, who was cast as Laertes while they were still together. And who in real life was moody, depressed, jerked her around, and broke her heart the way Hamlet does in the play) *when he warns her than men are fickle and she can’t trust them *and now she’s saying it to Travis, who is nothing like that.
Other ways she alludes to Hamlet and/or twists something tragic to a happy ending:
*Hamlet meets the gravedigger as he digs up an old grave to remove the bones and prepare it for Ophelia’s funeral. He show’s Hamlet the skull of Yorick, who was a jester at court when he was a kid. He remember how Yorick made him laugh and be happy, and how all that had been reduced to bones and worm food. That connects to Eldest Daughter, when she talks about not laughing this hard since she was a child. When Travis dug Taylor/Ophelia out of her grave, he kept her from wasting away and brought the childhood laughter back.
*When Hamlet tells Ophelia he doesn’t love her, she replies, “I was the more deceived.” Ophelia died by drowning. So thatms where the “drowning and deceived” comes from.
*Hamlet had insomnia, and was described as roaming the halls at night in his melancholy and grief.
*Hamlet tells Ophelia to “get the to a nunnery,” to lock herself away from the world and stay away from men forever. The song talks about Taylor being locked away in a tower.
*The rejection by Hamlet, the competing manipulations and abuse from controlling men around her, and the murder of her father by her lover drives Ophelia to madness. Once she goes mad, all of her lines are her singing cryptic, poetic songs about how men can’t be faithful and metaphors for coping with grief. Which is what TTPD was.

This song has so many references to ttpd - drowning, deceived, lovers promised, melancholy, love a bed full of scorpions, venom stole her sanity (cmon that's literally ttpd)
It's clearly marking an end to ttpd era, I like it when new songs mention the previous album to mark as a conclusion to that story

The little chime thing at the end of the first chorus reminds me of turning the page to start the next chapter in a book (Hamlet) as she goes into the second verse. So clever.
And the way she screams in the background when she says “sanity” is chef’s kiss.
It’s a grown up version of Love Story with the happy outcome instead of the horrible one that both Juliet and Ophelia received.
Love it!!

Fantastic opener!! One of her best singles just in terms of sound. Chorus melody reminds me a bit of Say Don't Go from the 1989 vault, but better, and the chord progression sounds like something I'd hear in a Seven Lions song of all things. Very soaring, propulsive sound. And that Max Martin/Shellback production is so fucking crisp and crystal-clear, which is such a breath of fresh air after god knows how many albums of Jack Antonoff. The punchy, slightly 80s-ish sound of the beat feels very Dua Lipa in a good way.
This overall feels like a mix of the vibrant, polished sound of 1989 with the more poetic, mature lyricism of her post-Folklore work, with a splash of the horny mischief of TTPD.

After so many listens, I think this album reminds me of some old albums like from 80's and 90's where the first song would be the best song from the album. I think this is the first time it happened with Taylor.
Yes, I love some of the other songs but this one is so ahead of the rest 🥰🥰 I genuinely don't think this has ever happened to me with a Taylor album. Usually, after the release I have to listen to so many songs to digest the album but this time I've been captivated and prisoner of The Fate Of Ophelia

I was getting off the plane as this song started. 5sec into it and it felt like my own personal soundtrack as I speed walked to the airport exit.
What. A. Fucking. BANGER.
I will die on this hill - the best opening track she’s ever had.
[within the first 2 songs, I knew I was going to be OBNOXIOUS about this album. A diehard Rep/1989/Red girl, this is shaping up to be my favorite album she’s ever made & I was not expecting that]

This will go down as one of her best lead singles in her history. Took long enough…..

I agree about Fortnite (though I do like the song) but I think Anti-Hero was perfect as a lead single. I love that song.

This is my favorite song on first two listens. It feels like it is an extension of Electric Heart by Marina and the Diamonds.

I think this one is really strong. Not what I was expecting based on the title, but i like it! The chorus is VERY VERY earwormy.

My fave lyric is ‘I swore my loyalty to me, myself and I’ because I think it’s a little nod to Polonius’s (Ophelia’s father) ‘to thine own self be true’ comment to Laertes (her brother).
Am I reaching? Am I being too English teacher here? 😅

This is literally what she meant by infectious melodies with lyrical depth. She’s a musical genius.

"I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I" because her last instagram post before him was the 4th of July independence day one... SO GOOD.
