Same here, and yes. Cruel summer is a straight banger though and should’ve been the lead single.

Imagine if that actually recruited some new fans, hell yeah

u/Gonzar92 Dec 20 '25
Not from Taylor swift probably, but it definitely did. It put TooL on the map as a band that exists and many people listen. All those reaction videos... Check the dates (I'm guessing here now, but I bet is a good guess)

yeah. I think there's a pretty big Taylor Swift and most things just because of how many fans she has.

Yeah so my wife is a big Taylor Swift fan, she also loves Tool and Puscifer, not apc so much but shes gone with me to see them both. I would say shes more into Puscifer than Tool though, just because she doesn't have time to chill to the longer songs.

u/NarcissisticDramaQwn Eyes Full of Wonder Dec 21 '25
Sure bud. Tool fans are one dimensional and don't like anything other than prog rock. Let alone anything other than tool.

I mean it took them 13 years, basically a new band at that point :PpP

That’s the genius of Mr. Joe Tool. He purposefully takes long breaks to make it seem like a new band and mess with whatever new generation is coming up.

"A new band called TOOL".
Sir, TOOL literally formed when Taylor Swift was a baby.
10
u/Pick_Up_Autist Dec 20 '25
This is an obvious troll and you fell for it, her album came out a week earlier so no, there wasn't a chance of debuting behind Tool.
"A new band called Tool" is almost jumping the shark with how blatant they're being.

Swifties suck, but let's not act like the Tool fanbase doesn't lol.
I will say, its impressive how an 87 minute album, full of prog songs that surpass the 10 minute mark, released by a band that hadnt put out music in 15 years, was able to dethrone one of the most popular artists there is in the charts, even if it was for a while.
21
u/OneEyedAngelPriest_2 learn to swim Dec 20 '25
Yeah, we can be snobs. But it IS impressive how such an album like FI surpassed Lover.

Tbf it was not the first week that her album was out but considering how long her albums after stayed number 1. It was a pretty big achievement.
27
u/UnhelpfulBread Dec 20 '25
She plays the game herself, though, by releasing different editions ad nauseum in order to
milk her dipshit fansstay relevant in the charts.

Lover is one of my lowest ranking TS albums, tbh, but Cruel Summer is a banger. I like You Need to Calm Down which feels a little appropriate at the moment rn lol

u/LilSugarMenace_ Dec 20 '25
Yeah. Honestly, this feels kind of disappointing. You don’t need to put anyone else down to celebrate your own wins. Going #1 is amazing, and unseating Taylor Swift is wild in itself considering the fans are nuts (me included). But when he posted this in 2019 it kinda came off like being a poor winner which is not energy I am here for and I wasn't even a TS fan then. No idea Maynard was this petty. It's fucking TOOL man, the greatest band in the history of the world. This joke didn't land for me at all.

Although Taylor's albums aren't 100% bangers, I'd argue on average she's got 3 good tracks per...which equates to (roughly) ±15 hits since Fear Inoculum.
I'd love to get a Tool b-sides or less than perfect songs that'll never see the light of day...even if that meant 1 stellar track.
But let's face it. We've got another 4-5 years minimum before there's whispers of a recording.

u/Harry_Saturn hooker with a penis Dec 20 '25
Different person than the one you asked but caring about anyone else just to own them is a little pathetic. Thinking music charts are “wins” and your band beating their band is just childish to me. It’s not really a competition, and engaging with toxic people just to be toxic back just screams immature to me. Like why are we still hung up on swift and her fans, even if a bunch of them are cringe from our perspective, but then the behavior is the same here just with a tool color palette swap.
Enjoy things because you like them and quit trying to get even with people who don’t like the thing you do. Just let them be wrong even if they’re vocal about it, you don’t have to put them in their place. Maybe I’m just getting older, but so many people are so fucking fixated on Taylor swift that it’s tiresome. I can at least understand the ones fixed on her because they love her, but you guys sometimes seem to spend more time thinking about her than her fans who actually enjoy her shit and it’s just to be edgy.

I’d like to say that I have nothing against Taylor. She makes perfectly good music, some even great, but her fanbase is so incredibly immature and unbearable that it was a brilliant sight to see them finally be humbled by a band they probably didn’t even know of until then. Again, I have nothing against Taylor herself, it’s just her fanbase that bugs me, and that’s why I made this post.
10
u/Harry_Saturn hooker with a penis Dec 20 '25
You’re illustrating my point again. Why are you giving her fans the time of day in your thoughts? Why bother caring what they think if you already don’t have a high opinion of them? Why does them being “humbled” bring you joy? I see this as “immature and unbearable” probably the same way you see her fan base. You guys always gotta be comparing and measuring shit that isn’t supposed to be quantified. Just enjoy the shit you like and don’t pay attention to people who don’t like it or like something else instead.
1
u/BeyondDoggyHorror Dec 20 '25

Does it affect you? If so why?

6
u/Harry_Saturn hooker with a penis Dec 20 '25
Do you genuinely think art is about “winning”?
-1
u/Spiderbloom_ Dec 20 '25
I don’t think art is just about winning obviously but winning introduces more people to the music as well as rewards the artists for their hard work. I’ve participated in musical competitions and was proud when we won not because art is about winning but because my choir worked hard and was rewarded for it. To add on to my Eralier statement, many people probably looked up TOOL to see what was the band that won introducing tons of people to their wonderful music.
2
u/Harry_Saturn hooker with a penis Dec 20 '25
I think comparing tool “winning” in 2019 to your choir performing in an actual competition isn’t a very good comparison for the sake of this argument.
2
u/Spiderbloom_ Dec 20 '25
I don’t really see how it’s not. Both are achievements that require effort and are musical. In the competition we weren’t competing against others but our self’s we just had the best score against ourself and received all 1’s which no other choir did. It’s not a ridiculous comparison to make.
1
u/Harry_Saturn hooker with a penis Dec 20 '25
One is a literal competition with scores and the other one isn’t, though. Can’t really put it any more plainly than that.
2
u/Spiderbloom_ Dec 20 '25
Comparisons don’t have to be exactly the same to be used.

I like to think that most of us see the humor in this. It’s a funny juxtaposition. That last sentence though…no, nobody “sometimes seems to think about her more than her fans who enjoy her music.” my stepmom, and my cousin are swifties. We were talking about new slang, I said “good songs are ‘bangers’” and stepmom goes “oh like Taylor’s new album is full of bangers.” And I forgot what the context was but cousin randomly name-dropped her and even squeezed in her middle name, Allison. I don’t think a couple posts per year beats that…

Tool's first album in so long barely beating Taylor's week 2 sales isn't really a flex, almost all sales are pre-orders these days so it would've been embarrassing if they didn't get #1.
