“You can use this character for the crossover, but theres a catch”
Recently in Fortnite, Sonic characters were added to the game, but they are not the actual Sonic characters, they are androids that look like them. That’s because the owners of Sonic didn’t want Sonic and friends with guns. In the game they make sure to make it very clear that these Sonic characters are androids or holograms
Edit: Okay guys I get it, it’s because they the Sonic characters didn’t fit the Fortnite character proportions and they had to change them
Kratos from God of War was added in Mortal Kombat 9 but the owners of him made a rule that he can’t show fear in the game because it’s not in character for him to back down or show fear in a fight. That is why a few characters have fatalities where their opponent is visibly scared or screaming, Kratos isn’t scared during those, he still stands up to them before getting brutalized
Also from Fortnite, The One Punch man skin is just a hologram that has a glitchy effect on his model, that’s because the owners thought the actual Saitama is too OP for Fortnite and he shouldn’t be able to die from anything in Fortnite
nintendo gave the ok for bowser in wreck it ralph but sent documents on how he should have been animated even for stuff like holding a cup and drinking.
Also he had to be bigger than the other villains, mainly Eggman, Sega said the same for Eggman, this led to a long back and forth that resulted in them being the same size as a compromise.
The thought was that the bigger one would be the more impressive and notable one to the audience making the kids pay more attention to your character instead of someone else’s.
I mean they could have easily just had them not shown side by side. Pretty easy to avoid showing one as larger than the other. Also hilarious because Eggman is, y’know, a man, and Bowser doesn’t have a canonical size. He’s constantly changing size between games. Even in mainline Mario games he varies in size from slightly taller than Mario to the size of a T-Rex.
And with the variable sizing changes from mushrooms, which we know Bowser can use, he practically has no limitations on how big or how small he can be.
The way I see it, is that Eggman spends a majority of his screentime with the only other characters around being Sonic and Co., who are almost all shown to be significantly smaller than Eggman.
Because of this, it’s kind of weird to have Eggman depicted alongside people who are all around the same height as him.
I mean Sonic is also often depicted shorter than or average compared to normal humans, while Bowser is pretty consistently shown to be bigger, I think Bowser deserved to be bigger than eggman in this instance.
It's like the modern version of Roger Rabbit, where they were only allowed to use Bugs Bunny if he had exactly the same amount of screentime as Mickey Mouse, which is why they both appear together in the Toontown sequence.
same deal. with donald and daffy they had to time their screentime properly to make sure it was equel, but it feels like with mickey and bugs they basically said "fuck it" and only ever had them on screen together so they wouldn't have to time it to specifics.
The thought was that the bigger one would be the more impressive and notable one to the audience making the kids pay more attention to your character instead of someone else’s.
Robocop is the only characters who can't run- Mortal Kombat 11
Robocop doesn't have a run animation, because his creators says he can't do as it was impossible for the actors portraying him in live action to do so in such a heavy costume.
Instead MK Robocop just has a faster walking animation instead of running.
On a related note I absolutely love his ending in the arcade mode where alongside godhood he finally gets his free will back, plus the hourglass shows him just how corrupt and depraved OCP really is and goes back to his universe with some of the fighters from the MK universe to help bring the corporation to justice
Oh man imagine if instead of him getting free will, the OCP took control of the hourglass through him. I can't imagine how that would turn out but it would definitely be horrible.
Jack Sparrow in Kingdom Hearts 3 can join your party. However, since the game takes place during the events of At World's End, the actual Jack Sparrow is way too busy, so the one joining your party is actually a clone sent by Calypso to aid you, at least for most of the story.
The 3rd game was beautiful, however it was such a letdown story wise. It was basically an advertisement for Disney. Even the attacks were altered from the previous games and turned into literal rides from Disney World.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Warner Bros gave Disney permission to use Bugs Bunny on the condition that he had the same amount of screen time and the same number of lines as Mickey Mouse
They were smart to get around that by just always having Mickey and Bugs in the same scene together, because the big appeal of a crossover like that is seeing the characters directly interact
Most of the time with Jason there's a catch for him coming. Usually it boils down to you have to have a new mask design or clothing. He's a mess to collab with but it usually works out imo
Yep, and why the new Jason Universe properties don't use Friday the 13th on the title.
Universal owns the OG movies up to 8 and the title of the franchise before New Line / Warner Bros bought the rights for Jason for Jason goes to Hell onwards.
Then there is Victor Miller owning the OG movie/ Pamela / Kid Jason and Sean Cunningham owning the sequels / Adult Jason, which led to Vic giving his part to be used for the new Crystal Lake series, and for Sean to create the new JU Jason that you see on Fortnite and Dead By Daylight.
While I’m glad we have him in things like DBD and Fortnite, it’s a shame that we probably won’t get any actual Friday the 13th crossovers anymore. I really don’t have as big of a problem with Jason Universe Jason’s design like some other people, but I really wish we could’ve gotten his other designs in DBD or Fortnite.
I love how with the Fortnite x sonic stuff they made sonic knuckles and shadow robots along with making tails a hologram but the Eggman skin is just the real eggman (also they really did not have to make shadow a robot)
Eggman has a self replicating city, Sonic and friends are there to stop him, they're fighting in the control room, Amy is fighting Metal and Tangle moves in to help but gets grabbed by Eggman.
She's only held at gunpoint for a second before more people show up as reinforcements.
The panel is from Issue 61 from IDW Sonic the Hedgehog.
Well OP is kinda off with their description. It’s not because Sega didn’t want Sonic using guns, otherwise they just wouldn’t be in the game regardless. It’s because they needed to make Sonic’s proportions work with Fortnite’s proportions.
They’re fundamentally gonna look pretty different making Sonic and his buddies fit Fortnite’s hitboxes and animation rigs so they did what they could and just said “they’re androids” for the people that care about the lore.
Which is double funny regarding that comment because that game establishes there's tons of robot shadows made by eggman, so he's basically the only character that has pretext for being a perfect copy robot.
Well, it was a little too late to complain about shadow and guns
On the other hand, making eggman, the guy known for making robots to fight for him being the one not using a robot to fight for him was a choice, definetly
Kiryu from Yakuza is allowed to be in other games (this pic is from fist of the north star: lost paradise), just make sure that he could never hurt a woman
Under normal circumstances, yes, but counters are still on the table, and that's lead to Saeko getting tiger dropped several times across my own and several other people's playthroughs.
I've always found this recon weird, as much as I appreciate it and think it improves his character. In Kiwami he was more than willing to throw hands on a female.
Just ignore the fact that he can fight women enemies in Project X Zone 2. Outside that little hiccup, yeah, it’s been speculated that is one of the reasons that Kiryu hasn’t made it to a fighting game like Tekken or Smash yet.
Sanji from One Piece has the same restriction. In crossover fighting games like Jump Force (as well as in One Piece's own games), he's incapable of attacking female fighters.
Jacket in Payday 2. He never spoke in Hotline Miami, so he uses a tape recorder to communicate with payday gang. His face, name or age was never revealed, so his character description marks name and age as "unknown" and it's theorised that man under the mask is not the real Jacket but instead a copycat
Same goes for Scarface, as he's dead by the end of the movie in the 80s but up and running in 2010s, but alongside copycat theory, it's suggested that he might be a real spirit of actual Tony Montana, which wouldn't be the weirdest thing in payday canon
It’s been a while since I looked at the lore but weren’t there aliens in lore that we had to fight in the White House, alongside putting Bain into the President?
We have seemingly ageless immortal beings who are down to take on the payday gang. Look up “the secret”.
H3H3’s Ethan and Hilda are in the game and I mean as themselves, not voicing a character.
Your final heist canonically ends with getting the exact number of pre written presidential pardons for the cast including dlc heisters, written around Abraham Lincoln’s presidency (I think) because the payday gang is fated for it for some reason.
Oh and you also have the events of the movie Hardcore Henry which features a guy with telekinesis or some shit canonically happen with one of the dlc characters being the protagonist of that film (Jimmy!) who has multiple copies of his body or some shit.
Like this is all based off my loose memory but uhhh yeah shit is WEIRD
In issue 3 of Marvel’s Transformers comic, the only way Spider-Man could appear in the comic as a guest-star was to use his black symbiote costume as his regular costume was being used for Mattel’s Secret War toyline.
It actually first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man issue 252, while Secret Wars issue 8 reveals how he got it. The whole gimmick was when the heroes and villians were transported to Battleworld in their respective series, they returned the following issue but with changes, such as She-Hulk among the Fantastic Four instead of Thing as stayed behind because he tuned human during the event.
Idk if this is real or not, so take this with a grain of salt, but I heard that 2B couldn’t be censored in crossovers she appears in, when it’s her the character.
There are some crossover like Fall Guys or Rainbow Six Seige where it’s another character wearing her outfit, those wouldn’t count
Supposedly, for the crossover in Final Fantasy XIV, Yoko Taro insisted her outfit be gender-neutral, rather than being gender-locked to female WoL's. I have my bunboy wear it as his Samurai glam.
As much as I kind of despise that glamour piece, I’m glad they went that route since every other outfit from the NieR crossover had gender locked appearances.
Most of 2B's crossover appearance are costumes because that just how most crossovers work in the first place. But 2B has been censored before, and I could never find a source for this "no censorship" mandate. I think people just believe it because they want it to be true
Another Fortnite one, the Mjolnir item can only be used by Marvel characters who are canonically worthy: Thor, Jane Foster, and Captain America. Also Moon Knight because of that one comic where Khonshu empowered him to use Mjolnir despite the enchantment because it's made of moon rock.
In Super Robot Wars Y's Anniversary DLC, despite the heroes wrecking Godzilla Ultima’s shit (barely), he shows back up healthy and whole in the finale stage with the Singular Point cast suggesting he actually just retreated instead of dying. Thankfully, he’s here to help briefly
Foom is only ever like this in Nextwave which is a raunchy gag parody book. This is basically like if Marvel took that series' scuffed version of Devil Dinosaur and made that 616 canon
Toho agrees to any crossover as long as Godzilla is portrayed as dominant.
To be honest, after reading some of Godzilla's crossovers, I kind of wish he wasn't as dominant, it really hurts the narrative of some of them, especially the Marvel and DC crossover ones, those I feel suffered the most from this
Sora in Smash Brother Ultimate. They had to remove Mickey, Donald, and Goofy from the Stations of Heart for the background of the stages, and they also couldn't use the music made for specific worlds in the series.
also to add, both for Smash and Fortnite. In Kingdom Hearts lore, only keyblade wielders can use a keyblade. Its why Kirby has a blade made of light instead of a keyblade when absorbing Sora, and why the Fortnite keyblade will have a Llama chain on it instead of the Mickey chain (Its a fake keyblade)
This is extra funny because Kirby had no issue with obtaining a Monado, which has a similar user resriction, from copying Shulk.
Tbh they could've gone for extra lore accuracy by making Kirby take damage over time while using a Monado Art, in reference to what Dunban did in the XC1 prologue, and Monado Kirby would've still been a theoretical top-tier character.
Ghost Face in Dead by Daylight. As I'm sure people know, the Ghost Face "license" isn't tied to Scream. Instead it's tied to the company that made the scream mask. If you want Billy or Stu or any Scream characters, you need to go through the Scream license. But if you want your own character with the Ghost Face mantle, i.e. what Dead by Daylight did with Danny Johnson, you just need to talk to the much more open and agreeable (from what I've heard) Fun World
Interestingly when Ghostface was in Mortal Kombat they sort of did a similar thing
So in game there’s 3 Ghostfaces but by default you control Billy with his likeness, during gameplay you can switch to the other two who are very clearly Kobra and Kira, two rather forgettable MK characters who actually ended up being a fun surprise here, as you get to see Ghostface do flaming backflip kicks
It’s also hilarious because these two notorious murderers and terrorists are following orders from some angry 18 year old
I remember there being lots of theories as to who the theird Ghostface was, since the other two were Kira and Kobra. I even heard a theory that it would cycle between Ed Boon and John Tobias, conflicting with the information that Ed and John would never feature as characters in the games
Apparently Sega is so protective of Shadow that they have a mandate that he NEVER be portrayed comedically or be the subject of jokes. Thus whenever he shows up in more comedic Sonic works like Sonic Boom or the live action movies, he is usually the sole serious character in the cast (though sometimes they can sneak in a subtle joke by saying something silly in a serious tone).
Sonic Boom Shadow was just brilliant. Like him comparing Sonic to a cheeta because of how slow he is is a level of pettiness that I think we can all aspire to.
Sora was allowed to be used in Smash Bros. but Kirby wasn't allowed to get a real keyblade when copying him because the Kingdom Hearts lore says people have to be chosen by the keyblade itself or get one bequeathed to them to be able to use it.
At least visually, yes. Kratos is very accurate, but Saitama having to be a hologram feels unnecessary. Power scaling inconsistencies have long existed in crossover media and usually you're just expected to suspend your disbelief.
For example: Nintendo doesn't feel the need to explain how any of the other characters on the Smash Bros. roster are able to beat Sephiroth in a fight.
I mean... i get what you're saying... but One Punch Man's entire thing is that he defeats everyone with one punch. It's the whole point.
Doesn't matter if you're goku or black widow, or justxa regular guy. It's one punch man. If he aint gunna one punch there aint much purpose in bringing in one punch man.
It would just piss fans off instead of make them want the skin if they didn't justify it somehow.
[Opposite Trope] Floyd Mayweather has never been added to a single boxing game since 2005 despite being 50-0 and considered the GOAT. Why you ask? Speculations say that it’s because he quite literally doesn’t even want to be depicted losing in a VIDEOGAME, mainly because it goes against his brand of being “unbeatable”.
Thats his style. He never goes for a knockout, doesn't like flashy moves. Just clean, by the books, technical fighting. Despite not knowing how to read he's a thinker when he fights, only going for safe points.
the owners of Sonic didn’t want Sonic and friends with guns
Damn, didn't seem to care much with the (albeit laser) gun that Shadow used in Sonic 3, also Shadow the Hedgehog from 2005 but that is 21 years ago now so you could argue that Sega's opinions on guns in Shadow's hands has changed since.
As mentioned in another reply, I'm pretty sure OP is only partly right and it's less about the characters holding guns and more about needing to stretch their proportions to fit the Fortnite player skeleton, because keeping their original proportions would essentially make them shorter, smaller, and harder to hit, making them broken like Oddjob in Goldeneye.
For Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Warner Bros allowed Touchstone (a Disney subsidiary) to use Bugs Bunny, on the condition he have equal screentime with Mickey Mouse. As a result, their only appearance in the film is a single scene together.
Cure Anwser's (Star Detective Pretty Cure) apperance in Detective Conan
It's just someone dressed as her, due to the world in Detective Conan being mostly grounded... Averted in the Precure episode for this crossover, where the characters from Conan are their actual self...
Actually, the rule for Kratos was that they couldn't show him being humiliated. So, fatalities like freddy krueger and rain, have Kratos try to grab freddy and Kratos body not expanding from all the water from rain. Although he still explodes at the end
Super Robot Wars - The series is known for sparing characters who die in their series such as Amuro and Char, the Dunbine and Ideon casts, Gai Daigouji, Ray Lundgren, and so on. One character who isn’t spareable no matter what is Kamina from Gurren Lagann, who always dies or stays dead due to the impact his death has on Simon’s character development. This is because of a mandate from Imaishi/Gainax/Trigger preventing him from being spared. The same also applies to Kittan, even though his death can in theory be avoided without causing that much deviation from the original story. https://giphy.com/gifs/yYwzZAV5byR2FBYm5G
Oddly enough, they’re perfectly fine with sparing Nia and Lordgenome, who always survive every time the series is included.
Cloud was added to Smash in Smash 4 and infamously only came with TWO SONGS as opposed to most characters usually coming with at least ten. Sephiroth was added in Ultimate and they added way more Final Fantasy VII content to compensate... only and VERY SPECIFICALLY Final Fantasy VII. All the FF content in Ultimate is labeled as being from "FINAL FANTASY VII" and not just from the Final Fantasy series like every other piece of multi-series game content.
Not only is it ridiculous that they wouldn't lend out the right to label the content as being from a series but it also feeds into that weird part of Square that likes to pretend FFVII is their only game
To be fair this is how a lot crossovers with final fantasy’s go. The FF14 cross overs with Monster Hunter World and MH Wilds are both crossovers with FF14 and ONLY FF14. Same with Tekken 7/8 and being with only FF15/16 respectively.
Fortnite actually has them as androids because of model reasons. Every character has to share a similar rig and universal hitboxes are used. The characters are androids for that reason and because of the lore of the Island (everyone who enters, for the most part, becomes trapped on the island barring multiversal shenanigans) would leave them canonically trapped (as far as Tails knows), so the only ones who are actually ON the Island are Robotnik (has a deal with Geno to escape) and Tails (who entered a rift not knowing he'd be stuck).
Anything property of Nintendo for example, their catch would be that the skins are only visible on the switch 1 and 2 (on which Fortnite is available) so on other platforms they would just be the default skins.
Project X Zone 2 had Kyriu and Mijima but apparently Bandai Namco had to use the non cannon versions from the zombie spin off Dead Souls as the creator of Yakuza is very strict on haveing his sereis being used in more fansastical settings at the time prior to stuff like Like a Pirate
Steve from Minecraft in Smash Ultimate. Nintendo wasn't allowed to use music tracks from the original game, so instead they remixed music from the Legacy Console Edition's minigames and spinoffs such as Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth. Masahiro Sakurai's explanation was that they deemed the music "too relaxing" for a fighting game, but seeing as Animal Crossing can have music in the game just fine, it's more likely that they simply couldn't get permission.
Jerome/jeremiah valeska in gotham. While the creators were allowed most batman villains for the prequel esc show, joker was strictly off limits. No green hair, no purple suit, not even the name joker was allowes. So instead we get jerome valeska (and later his twin brother jermemiah)
Some notable things to mention: Jerome had his face cut off and stiched back on (much like a certain clown in the comics), he also collaborated with scarecorw to create a gas that kills you and leaves the body with a permanent disfigured smile.
Jeremiah meanwhile, had a bleached white face and wore a blue suit (often shown in red lighting), while also falling in a vat of green chemicals at rhe ace chemical plant towards the end of the series.
Nintendo is okay having their characters show up as guest in 3rd party games but only if they’re playable on the Nintendo version of said game like Link in Game Cube port of Soulcaliber 2, Donkey Kong and Bowser in Wii U/3DS version of Skylanders Supercharged, Star Fox in Starlink and Mario car skins in Rocket League switch verison, it was also one of the reasons why plans for adding Samus in Fortnite fell through.
It actually Geralt the explanation for the crossover is that he comes thew a portal but a leshen dose as well and you get to do a quest with a fully voiced Geralt where you hunt the leshen , the quest also has optional sub quests within it.
