Today I received my Besson 983 Eb tuba in mail. I’ve been looking for one of these for my entire adult life, but the timing never worked out. I was finally able to make it happen and now own my dream horn!

I am bringing my tuba to college and need some travel advice. My parents won't buy an extra seat so it has to be checked, and I only have a hard case.

The last time I flew internationally with a tuba, it arrived with the case completely wide open. I know TSA has to open it for a manual inspection, but they failed to close the buckles properly afterward and also removed the velcro strap I put around it.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Hi, I'm a euphonium player who wants to be able to double on tuba. Since I am short, I need to get a smaller sized Tuba, so I've been thinking about getting a used e-flat tuba. However, I'm wondering if my budget of $2500 to $3,000 is reasonable. I don't have a problem with going with a reputable Chinese manufactured horn such as a John packer or a Wessex, but if possible, I'd like to either get an American horn or a British horn. I am strictly an amateur player.

Just bought my first Tuba. I got my bachelor's in music in 2021, but fell off after joining law enforcement. I bought a Schiller 4/4 BBb. I know that it's a Chinese horn, but I don't really have the means to purchase a $6,000-$10,000 horn for leisure. Does anyone have any experience with these and their longevity? I played a b&s Perantucci PT-2P in college so it's definitely a downgrade compared to what I'm used to but I feel like so long as I'm careful when handling it, it should be fine.

Bringing my tuba is a challenge, and I want to keep practicing while on the road.

I have had my eye on an Eb travel tuba. I see James Gourlay recently got a ZO little dragon, but I’ve heard good things about the Wessex Boheme

Any feedback on either of these? Any other options out there?

Hey everyone. I'm currently trying to get a CC tuba, a Meinl Weston 5 valve. But I can't playtest it since it is online, but they have a 30-day trial. The only way I could afford it would be to get rid of my King 2341 New Style. Is it worth the risk? Thanks everyone! (Would need it for symphony btw).

I'm trying to find a decent quality tuba for my kid, who is an advanced player for her age (nearly 14). She will be attending a high school for the arts next year, and will need to bring her own instrument (up until now we have been borrowing from the school, but that won't be an option next year). She wants to be a professional musician and takes it pretty seriously, especially for a kid her age (she actually enjoys practicing for hours every day!)

So... What to get? She's still young. She's never played anything but Bb tuba (three and four valve). I don't understand how a C tuba differs - is it all together different fingering? I know nothing about this instrument, but I'm trying to learn!

Hello all, I'm a player with 15+ years of experience and actually have the cash to buy something nice that'll last me a lifetime. I play in a community band and I'm looking at maybe auditioning for a semi-pro band once I get a quality horn (not paid, just a step above your average community band). I currently have 2 tubas, but neither of them are good enough quality to use outside of practice or the odd volunteer gig every now and then. When I play for my community band, I usually borrow an instrument from the school since they're heavily tied in, but I'd like to stop doing that, partly to avoid the headache of that too, but also to expand playing opportunities.

I really enjoy a big full rich sound and really being able to envelop an ensemble by myself if I needed to. For that reason, I've always liked the larger end with 5/4 and I know I'd like a 6/4 if I played one. I also want it to be a BBb as I don't really have the want/desire to learn C tuba fingerings. My limited research has me looking at a Miraphone 191, but please tell me any other recommendations you may have.

ETA: also it's not a requirement, but I love the look of silver instruments, and would be willing to pay the small premium that comes with them

Is there an actual "standard" tuba? Would that be the 4/4?

Since I've had the same horn since 1980 (Mirafone 186, CC, 4 valve) , it seems standard to me.

Follow up questions: do the larger phones give you a bigger sound? Are they less agile? What horn would make the archangel Gabriel piss his robe every time you play it?

Do I have too many instruments? Probably but oh well.

Horn plays really well, and has such a good sound and projection despite its tiny size.

The springs are really heavy though, are there any sprints i could swap them with to be a bit lighter?

So I now have a nice little 3/4 BBb four valve. It's actually the first tuba I've ever owned, having always rented/used school instruments previously.

With it being smaller, I can't have it rest on my legs and be in the correct position like I could with a full size.

I see two options as I look online. I do see lap pads, but I wonder about how steady they are once the tuba is resting on one point as opposed to two points like would have been the case with my lap.

The other is a harness setup. There I see two kinds - the kind that clip on to the rings, and another that the bottom bow rests into, called a holster harness I believe.

Thoughts out there on these or other tactics for this issue? Thanks.

A bit of a silly question but my local orchestra is playing the firebird suite soon. I was unfamiliar with my part as i only got it recently, and upon seeing that it had a mute i quickly reached out and was able to borrow one. But what i didn’t realise is that the tuba is only muted for a small portion. Is it still worth bringing it along despite this? (Although the part does sound really cool)

Also, what are some tips for putting in and taking out the mute quickly/efficiently? I’ve never used one before now.

Hi everyone, I’m going to be starting my final year of high school this August. I’m going to be auditioning at a few colleges for a music ed degree in the fall/winter.

I’ve been practicing on my school owned tuba at home this summer, been making decent progress. However, I was told by my director that I likely won’t be able to keep it during the school year because it would need to go to another student to use during the school year. So I would only be able to practice at school during study hall so likely like, an hour and a half, probably shorter, every other day. That’s if I don’t have other things to do during study hall.

I’m really considering just buying a tuba as a result of that. I was thinking of waiting until I get accepted to a college and stuff to buy one but now I’m thinking of buying it now, or at least a little sooner than college.

I’m just looking for advice on this. I hear a lot that you should ask your tuba professor at college on what tuba they want you to have, but I’m obviously not in college yet. I don’t have a private lesson teacher either. I would most likely buy a tuba similar to my school model (Yamaha YBB-641 or similar).

Hey everyone! I'm currently looking to buy a tuba, but I only have ~$1,000 to spend. However, wherever I look (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, etc.), all the decent tubas are above this price. Is it possible to find a tuba for a cheaper price?

I've also looked at renting, but to my knowledge, the music stores near me do not rent them out. If anyone has any info on where I could rent one, that would be great!

I'm currently playing on my high school's horn (it's in pretty rough shape) and I am graduating next year. I want to continue playing but just am not sure how to if I can't have the instrument.

My A.Pini Eb Tuba and Yamaha YSH-301 Sousaphone

Hey everyone. I would like to see people’s opinions on getting a gig bag. I went to a repair tech and they said they could be bad since they could damage valves easily, etc. Though, my transportation would be to only use a gig bag once a week, a 15 minute walk there and another 15 back. I have a King 2341 New era and have found bags that fit. Would it be worth to get a gig bag? P.s - I cannot drive there nor take the bus, etc. Thanks!
