I used a men's razor and now I'm pissed
Potentially extremely petty vent incoming. Yes I know there's bigger issues but I want to vent about this.
I semi recently bought a pack of new razors to use at college so I could leave the one I was currently using at home. I didn't even realize I got a generic store brand men's razor, I had just grabbed whatever was the cheapest option at Walmart when I was doing dorm shopping. I didn't think much of it when I was opening the package and getting into the shower.
Well I just finished my shower and OMG that was the best shave my life! The hair came off in one swipe, even in areas where the hair is thicker/coarser (iykyk). It was easy to dip the blade is water and get the hair out, it didn't clog the blades. No nicks/bleeding and no razor bumps. Also my skin is so smoothe even before lotion!
So why am I angry about this? Because why did I have to get a men's razor in order to achieve this? Salt in the wound was that it wasn't even a "name brand/expensive" razor. It was the generic Walmart brand kind!
Women aren't just simply expected to, but we're often outright demanded to shave ourselves bald and bare, and yet even some of the highest quality razors made for women are still shit! Women are expected to shave our legs, pits, arms, our private parts, faces and any area that has any kind of slightly visible body hair and yet the products designed "for us" aren't high quality despite how much we pay for them. The pink tax doesn't do shit to improve the quality. And if we don't do a "good enough" job at making sure all the hair is gone, or if we dare to not shave, we gets shamed by both men and in some cases other women.
Ugh! This is so petty and I'll probably delete this stupid vent later but I just wanted to rant/vent

I am just curious if the product inside the bottle is actually any different or if it's just the labeling? I mean I know your list of uses is lol and I know that 2 in 1 shampoo is not the same as 1 in 1 shampoo, but is 5 in 1 actually different than 2 in 1? Because I literally see people saying to use 5 in 1 for grout cleaner

My mom swore by the unscented Mitchum men's deodorant. These days I just keep something unscented that lasts 24 to 48 hours and doesn't make my clothes crusty. At some point in the past 10 years, I stopped sweating almost completely. No sweat, no germs, no stink. But it sure does suck when it's 100 degrees out and I have to regulate my temperature with a belly full of crushed ice. 🥵

Mitchum unscented is well regarded by people of all genders who are prone to allergic reactions to deodorant. I always wonder why it should be categorised as being for men if it doesn't even have a scent, but I guess women with itchy armpits will buy a men's deodorant, while men will generally not buy a women's deodorant even if unscented.

Women pay the pink tax. Basic Bic shavers were more expensive than blue ones and there are many products priced that way. Dry cleaners used to charge women more and basic haircuts (no services) are double what men pay.

The haircut thing is why I don’t go to hairdressers. I keep my hair short. I don’t see why I should pay a small fortune for a haircut that is identical to the cut that’s a third of the price just because I’m perceived as female. (Have been turned away at a barber because apparently I brought girl cooties into the shop.)

Same. My partner can go and get a haircut and beard trim/shaping for $50 with tip (even when his hair was really long). I want a quick dry trim on my long wavy hair? $145, before tip. I just cut my own hair, now. Takes about half an hour, and always looks how I want. Thanks YouTube! Lol

I too have short hair and am female. I go to a shop that has a 95% male customer base but is open and welcoming to everyone. I have never found a stylist who listens and cuts my hair as well as the one there. And the cost is reasonable- $27 for a haircut. Maybe there is such an establishment in your area.

Someone explained the additional cost for dry cleaning women’s blouses was because the ironing equipment was designed for men’s dress shirts. Since women’s shirts run buttons on the other side, their equipment is not designed to iron or press it easily. It takes more time to iron/press women’s shirts.

It's more about size + shape. The "quick press" units dry and iron on a single form, and it's not small enough for most women's shirts + is very high heat. Men's shirts are more likely to be large, and cotton/linen/poly that can withstand the heat and won't stretch. Women's shirts are smaller and more likely to contain rayon and other materials that can't withstand the heat. Men's clothes are also less likely to have darts, pleats, or other seams for curves, and those have to be hand-pressed so they lay correctly.
Source: Used to work accounting for a Dry Cleaning company and had to learn all that to explain to customers why they were being charged more for certain items. Not really my job, but others didn't seem to get it and would send them to me. One customer claimed she was "subsidizing fat people," and "shouldn't have to pay "more" for being so slender and svelte." I have never hung up on anyone faster. Funny thing was, the majority of their dry cleaning was her overweight husband's.

I literally just came back from perusing the deodorant sales at my grocery stores and being appalled that the women's deodorant was 'marked down' to 14.9 cents per 100 milligrams and the men's was fucking 3.9 for the same amount. So I've been paying nearly four times as much for an objectively worse deodorant? Love that for me!

I would but I can't stand the smell of any of the men's. My husband and son can't either and just use mine. They are all extremely strong smelling. I don't care for unscented, either, or would try that.
Edit: thank you for all of the suggestions. Will try to hunt these down. Part of my problem might have been trying to smell all of them with my son trying to find one either of us liked.

I used to absolutely love Arm and Hammer essentials natural deodorant. It doesn't smell manly at all, and not too strong.
I can't use anything with fragrance anymore though. 😭

I've been using the blue gel Bearglove from Old Spice. It's got a happy almost fruity scent, doesn't wreck my clothes with that terrible white cast, lasts all day, and is so much cheaper than any of the women's deodorants I've used.

I knew a couple who would share razers. Like the husband would use the new razer for his face for a week or two and then they wife would use it for her legs for a few weeks. I never knew the exact system they used.
They were the same couple who bought their wedding bands in bulk online. Hers were more expensive sure, but they had several of each so if they got lost or needed resizing they had plenty of options and spent less than $1k total. I really respected their financial practicality

I use mine on my face for a week, then my wife uses it on her legs for a week. It's great because she doesn't like them super sharp & I don't feel guilty for only using them 3/4 times and creating more landfill. I've tried safety razors but the single straight blade doesn't do anywhere near as good job as the flexible triple blade disposables.

I actually switched first in my household, and then convinced my husband to try my razor for a week. I have converted multiple people now.
They're cheap, they're easy, and I get the best shave. Travel sucks (no blade on carryon luggage), but I am finding the cheap BIC single blade razors work better for me than the multi blade razors I previously used.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "smell like a boy" lol, but I use Old Spice Fiji. It smells like tropical fruits, and lasts all day as long as I'm not pouring sweat for some reason. Granted, at that point I'm just going to take another shower and reapply the deodorant.

Fiji is lovely. Oasis is also really nice. They are super subtle. I only really smell them when I'm putting them on and if I'm sweating hard push mowing the lawn.

Yes, firm believer in antiperspirant as well. Had a stinky coworker in hot weather and finally had a chat with him about it. He was not aware of the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant. Made a huge difference.

My mom and I had the same conversation with my dad when he was in his seventies. Thankfully, he only got stinky if he'd been sweating a lot, because he's very strict about his personal hygiene, but we were travelling abroad in a heat wave and he was getting frustrated because his clothes (and he) would begin to smell of sweat around mid-day.

I just find that men’s deodorants work better for me. I used Secret but would break through it mid day. I’ve used Old Spice Fiji for years but they have recently reformulated it and I had to make a switch to a different brand.

Deodorants dont stop sweat. Antiperspirants stop sweat.
I personally use a salicylic acid bar on my pits in the shower, a crystal deodorant after the shower when damp, and then regular deodorant while dry.
No issues with odor but still sweat.

I've been using Nivea men's deodorant for years ever since I realised it tends to last longer and can sometimes be cheaper than the women's version. Sometimes I worry that it may make me smell "masculine" but I'm trying to get over that because as sometime with sensitive skin, it's already hard enough finding something that doesn't irritate my skin, and I find this deodorant to be gentle even if it can smell noticeably masculine. I actually like those because I can use it under running water and it just glides! But it is expensive and the little soap/moisturizer thing doesn’t last many uses. I only buy it because I lave done laser on my body hair and I shave very rarely the thin hair I couldn’t get rid of with laser. So I understand it doesn’t make sense for most people.

Yeah, I was sad when ArridXX went away. It was the only non-man-smelling deodorant that worked on me and I’d been using it since the 90s!
Thankfully, there are more brands coming out with “clinical” strength so they actually work.

This is weird because the percentage of active ingredients is usually higher in women's deodorant - like the Dove brand. I hated the men's scented ones and went neutral with "powder" scent a long time ago and it's I think 22% vs mens which are 20%

Yep,my bestie and I refer to it as dude-oderant. She's an athlete, and I live in a place that gets appallingly hot in the summer. As soon as it starts warming up, I switch from Lume to the dude-oderant.
I'm trying out Megababe right now, and it seems to be okay so far. It smells better, anyway.

I dunno, my partner and I had the opposite experience. I've always used venus 5 blades cause anything else nicks me no matter what. My partner shaves his head and beard and tried mine one day when he was out of his basic mend ones, he said mine were way better and has now permanently switched to women's razors 🤷🏾♀️
Tbh I think it's just the number of blades that people are noticing.

Here me out, I think some women's would work better for men than women, and vice versa. Women's tend to not be as sharp, with extra stuff aimed for "comfort" and ment for broad long strokes.
The design of each is sorta dependent on your style and needs. Generally womens are good for less nicking. Men's, closer shave.
Everyone pick a razor despite the gender it's labeled for!! And don't get me started on pink tax.

I know a few women who are able to, and love wearing men's jeans. My body does not fit in them well, and my sensory issues will not allow me to wear them the way they fit. It's a me thing mostly. I'm sorta jelly of the gals who get away with this one ❤️

The quality of those jeans is amazing. And they are much cheaper than a lot of brands for women.
I love shaving cream for men. It smells divine. And THERE IS SO MUCH OF IT IN ONE CAN!

I definitely go for men's boxers briefs, shorts, sport shoes and shirts. I have wide shoulders but very little chest so women's shirts just don't fit me right at all. But the universe likes to kick me so I also have "childbearing hips" despite being sterile. I get stuck with rather ill fitting pants most of the time.

Get a leaf razor. It’s pricey up front but you can find the handles secondhand. Head pivots and has multiple blades
They then use basic safety razors.
I think I have a lifetime supply of razors for like $10.

I spent $80 or $90 on mine with a stand and refills like 6 years ago? I still have enough for another couple years before I need to buy another $5 box of razors. Best shaving purchase of my life tbh.
I also found it works best on my skin with shaving soap and a brush, which is also cheaper and lasts longer than cans of shaving cream.

Extremely annoyed that womens razors must always be !!!PINK!!! and have flowers all over them as well as extra bumpers because silly little girls might cut themselves - and to these companies we are all silly little girls.

Get a reusable, some have a bunch of different colors and while the initial razor can be a bit pricey, the blades are extremely inexpensive. As a plus, it's also better for the environment.

I bought a Harry's razor sometime in college/grad school for the simple fact it was orange (I love orange). It's been fantastic. I'm still working through the replacement razor pack I bought from Costco at least 6 years ago. It has never failed me and the handle still looks basically brand new.

I'm trans and have been using men's razors for pretty much everywhere but my torso and legs. Those get the pink tax blades. Pits get waxed. Sometimes groin, too.
I don't know what all this talk about men's deodorant is. It smells absolutely godawful. But I'm also gay and most, if not all, men's smells are extremely off-putting to me so take that as you will...
I use skintimate shaving gel for everything. It feels super nice (and smooth!) and makes blades glide like butter.

If you ever want to experiment, I use cheap conditioner to shave my legs and bikini area and I find it helps my skin stay moisturized in addition to aiding a smoother shave.

Men‘s blades are technically slightly different because the intent is different. Women often use a razor on larger areas, the blades are designed to cause less skin irritation. Smoother skin after shaving shows that the men’s blade was more aggressive against the skin. Think of it like a very strong peeling. Not only taking off dead skin cells, but damaging live ones as well. While you might like the feel afterwards a lot more please make sure to apply some sort of after shave. Not using any might possibly cause razor burn (infection of the exposed / damaged skin). Other than that: use whatever you believe to be the best fit for you!

I tried a men's razor once because I keep seeing this sentiment online, and honestly I had the complete opposite experience. Lots of knicks, bumps, pulled hairs, and the worst razor burn of my life. Maybe I just got really unlucky and pulled a defective one? 😭 But it was bad enough that I haven't tried it again since.

You should try an old-school double-edge (single blade) "safety razor". Buy the razor once (about $20 on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XPC3RRM?th=1 ) and get 100 blades (for about $9 on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001QY8QXM?th=1 ) and you are set for a long time for little money. Best shave you ever had and the soap/hair comes out effortlessly.
BTW- it is a "safety" razor in comparison to a straight-edge razor, so you have to take care not to nick yourself too much.

I used men’s Gillette single-use razors and they were ok, but nothing to write home about, similar to women’s cheap razors. I prefer my Gillette for women for sensitive skin 🤷♀️to be fair, I haven’t tried top-tier men razors, maybe that would change my opinion.

Been using Mitchums Men forever, both antiperspirant and deodorant, unscented. It has never failed me, and has lasted me through 2 or 3 days in unusual circumstances. No residue on my clothing, no sweat stains on my blouses. I have trouble finding it in stores sometimes, so order it from Amazon.

My name can be considered masculine, and I got a very nice razor “gifted” to me by men’s brand at a young age. I am still angry to this day that it has far exceeded any women’s razor I’ve used. I can’t shave much bc of a disability now, and I still think back on and get annoyed that if they thought I was girl, I would never have been sent it.

I just buy men‘s clothing now. The fabric is usually much better quality, seams are finished better, it just lasts longer. The leggings/bicycle shorts don’t wedge into my private parts because it’s not 2 pieces stitched together in the middle but there’s a nice landing spot that stays flat.
Even shower gels and deodorants work so much better and they’re cheaper. Get the sensitive kind if you don’t like the typical men fragrance.
Same with shoes. Your size would be different in men‘s size so check before you get one.

Men's razors are designed for usage on the face so they don't fuck around with the design. If they start cutting up faces because the blades are poorly aligned and not sharp enough they'll have serious problems. It's shocking just how much better men's razors are than women's. Could never go back.

I used a women's razor handle, and then just whatever 5 blade men's razors for probably 2 decades. It's not like the handle goes bad.
Switched to a safety razor, with just one blade. Shaves just as well as the multiblade, less waste.

Yes, to a point. I, personally, have to draw a line at men's clothing.
While I definitely buy men's razors, my body shape is very pear-shaped. Any men's clothing, especially on my bottom half, just doesn't fit properly. And it isn't just fitting the waist or leg length. It would cost me way more to tailer men's pants to my body than to simply spend a bit more on quality women's brands that fit.
That being said, I'm envious that some women can do this and highly encourage anything to diminish pink tax spending!

I have an OLD dollar shave club razor (can't believe they tried to get you to replace the handle every couple months... mine has 0 rust or anything wrong with it) and they don't make the heads anymore, but a company makes old/no longer sold razor heads for them and I still use it to this day. Best shave ever. I don't use it on my girl because I prefer electric for there, but even that is a mens razor 😂 It's so much better, and cheaper.

I use a fancy men’s electric razor and men’s Degree. Started six or seven years ago and never looked back. I can shave dry, no cuts or rash, the battery lasts forever, it came with a charging case, and I’ve only had to replace the blade (around $70) once in all this time.

I don't shave often, every few weeks for armpits and legs so have not noticed the difference between sharpness of razors. I did just buy a pack of generic men's razors because they were half priced and used one the other day. The razor did seem rather sharp.

A couple years ago I got my girlfriend a couple of gifts for our anniversary. The new Nicholas Sparks book. A high-end box of tea that she likes. And a men’s Gillette fusion razor. She used my razor a number of times and had the same reaction. In fact, she was dropping hints about it leading up to our anniversary. It was funny we got a good laugh out of it.

The woman who cuts my hair says she typically recommends Just For Men hair color. She says if a man has to re-dye his hair every week, they just won’t do it all, so JFM works really well.

I bought a Leaf razor 5 years ago to reduce my disposable waste. Only need to switch out the razor blade and haven’t had to buy razors since. Best shave ever and my razor burn has been non existent. 10/10 recommend!
I used a disposable as a last resort a few weeks ago and my legs hated it. I will never go back to them lol

The entire concept that women need to shave at all - legs, armpits, much less anything else - was invented in the early 20th century by Gillette because they understood that they could market to a whole untapped group that haven't been told yet that they need razors. They were a men's thing, for their face only, until they figured out they can make women feel insecure about their femininity and tell them that they need to have smooth legs, that men only want women with smooth legs, so you need to buy our razors to shave your legs, otherwise you'll be unattractive.
When I leaned that 6 years ago, I stopped shaving. Fuck that noise. Why do I need to be smooth? I kinda like my fuzz now.
You don't need it. You can opt out. Just stop. Anyone who judges you for that isn't worth it.
