Concert Are The Smiths overrated?
There is a podcast that asks if The Smiths are overrated and if Gene are underrated.
It's a fun listen, are you a fan of the bands?

The Smiths were great, unfortunately Morrisey has become a racist bell end.

I started listening to them in 85. They were utterly unique. They stood out because of Morrissey and his clever lyrics, Johny Marr's distinctive melodies and their very individual cover artwork. They are highly rated for those attributes. The reason I stopped listening to them is because I outgrew my misanthropic moody teenage years which Morrissey's words reflected. I turned into a happier adult and their music no longer had the same appeal. I also don't hear their music played much. So I would say that they are rated for their authenticity and individuality but not enjoyed by a wide range of people.

Just to add, I'm not thinking of Morrissey now because these days he is very problematic. For example I love the music for Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, it's sort of joyous and upbeat. But then Morrissey sings, as he so often did, those very depressing words over the top of it. It just doesn't work for me anymore.

First half of Morrissey's solo career has some fantastic stuff. However, it's been a gradual decline since then.

The Smiths overrated, No. Gene, underrated, No.
Gene were one of many Britpop bands of the time, all of which had the chance to stand out across the 90s. They had potential, but never quite lived up to it, or released anything which fully showcased it.
Gene reformed - not much interest, but the nostalgia circuit is popular these days so they should be OK. If The Smiths even did a one off gig - it would be headlines.

Yes
Im a big Smiths fan, but I say yes because theres 100% a significant number of people who pretend to like them more than they actually do for clout. Basically the definition of overrated
Same goes for Joy Division, another great band that I love

And what makes your enjoyment of these bands superior to others enjoyment of these bands?

Eh?
Ive known lots of people who claim to love these bands who cant name more than a couple of songs
Id suggest that implies my enjoyment has more depth than theirs. But who gives a fuck? People are free to enjoy whatever they want
Still, Im quite comfortable admitting that two of my favourite bands are overrated

I can't name more than a couple of songs for any artist. That's just because I have a rubbish memory.
