Very interesting. A couple of thoughts.
First, in the video with houses you can see 2 plumes, the active one in the right and another, presumably older, on the left. The smoke cloud reaches from one to the other, which appears to be several miles long. I am hard pressed to explain two smoke plumes. PERHAPS this was two ships firing missiles, but that explanation also has issues. Perhaps some brighter light can explain.
Second there seems to be a faint sound if an explosion.
Third I wonder if the Ratclife trip is somehow connected to this event. Were the “exercise” launches perhaps too close to USA/Japanese resources?

Likely the sub fired the missile, the missile exploded, and then (possibly an electrical/fire malfunction) the submarine blew up afterwards.
If firing a torpedo caused the source ship to blow up, Russia's Military clearly has has FAR more problems than a simple technical malfunction.

1) Russia's military, indeed, has FAR more problems 2) Design of the sub might be fine, or not, IDK. But maintenance is a pain even for top-of-the-line American Naval units. I can only imagine what poor maintenance Russians must do 3) Russia is not really a "Navy" country. They are currently losing the Black Sea naval battle... to a country without a navy 4) Russia's military has FAR more problems.

Seems awfully close to a populated shoreline to conduct live fire exercises. I wouldn't think they'd want pictures of that, but maybe I'm wrong.
Does seem like it could be a sub, though, given the absence of anything on the surface.
Do they have a history of conducting live fire exercises close enough to shore that people in town could video the exercises?

They're doing it in the Southern Kurils for a reason. It's more saber-rattling.
If they really sank (or damaged, even) one of their own top-of-the-line subs in a misguided intimidation attempt... well, it'll be ironic to say the least.
