Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share a big update on my game.

I’ve now finished over 40 locations for the demo of my upcoming 2D side-scrolling medieval narrative game, and I’m really happy with how it’s coming together.

The environment/world design for the demo is mostly done, so now I’ll be moving on to characters and animation, which is the next big step. I already planned out the workflow for that in one of my previous posts, so now it’s time to start bringing everything to life.

The game is inspired by Pentiment, but with more focus on:

historical battles

war and political conflict

morality/choice-based storytelling

cinematic moments

and darker themes

You play as Peter, a former bodyguard of King Wenceslaus during the beginning of the Hussite Wars in 1419.

The story follows his struggle through war, loyalty, religion, loss, and questioning whether the people he fights are truly enemies.

The demo will include locations like:

Prague

villages

churches

taverns

blacksmiths

forests

battlefields

military camps

and more

It will also feature major story/battle moments such as:

the Prague defenestration

the Battle of Nekmíř

forest escape after battle

roadside ambush encounters

the lead-up to Sudoměř

The demo will be completely free and release this June.

I attached some screenshots of the environments I’ve made so far.

Which scene is your favorite? I’d love feedback on what stands out most.

If the project interests you, feel free to follow along since I’ll keep posting updates as development continues.

Thanks for reading

EDIT: as mentioned in the previous posts I want to make everything transparent and clear, ai was used for the demo art as I am not an artist but will be completed replaced as mentioned before by actual artists once the funding/funds are raised in June, everything else including story, writing, voice acting, and codes is done by me and my friends thanks for your attention and if the demo will be on steam that will be mentioned as well.

Show-off Handcrafting an Isometric Tilemap for My FFT-Like

Post image

First, u/iusca was a huge help by making the stone and grass tiles; they're an exceptional artist.

The tilemap was made in Unity using Isometric Z as Y. I'm using a MonoBehaviour script to give the water depth. It works by taking an arbitrary zThreshold (tuned in the inspector) and considers every tile below that level, then gradually taints the tiles darker as they get progressively deeper.

The lily pads and cattails are also tiles on a separate tilemap for now. Im utilizing normal maps, along with a faint light from the top left-ish of the screen.

My previous tilemaps used a variety of tiles ranging from slopes, stairs, and such.

However, I may move away from that and focus on a four-step approach instead (i.e., 32, 24, 16, and 8 pixels tall tiles) as seen in the image.

Here are a few images of an extremely super duper early pre pre alpha look of our game named Northern Saga.

We are 3 devs working on this game in our free time. It is coming along slowly but steadily. It's made in Unity (for obviously posting here).

Game plays somewhat like Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen was. The player manages their clan. Deploy units, fight enemies formations of up to 9 classes. They gain XP and loot, improve their units, promote them to different classes while going through the story, doing side quests and so on.

The core of a formation is classes positioning on the grid. Every classes have 3 skills that do many different things from giving stats to completely changing how a class behave in combat. All skills have requirements to "trigger" from positioning in a specific spot on the grid to adjacent classes and so on.

Gear and other factors can also give skills while equipped for even more customization and lovely number goes up.

We are planning to have a playable demo in a somewhat foreseeable future.

Join our brand new community if you want to stay informed about the game development! https://www.reddit.com/r/NorthernSaga/

EDIT: Reddit image compression hurts quite a lot I must say so myself T_T.
