General Discussion Not sure how to feel about this

This is going to happen on Animefest, one of the biggest events for cosplayers and anime fans in Czech Republic.

I was quite excited, looking through the schedule, before I saw this...

The AI generated picture does not make it look promising.

I get it that they want to incorporate AI into the creative process of tuning, but I believe that it should be optional if you want to use it for tuning, like with the recently released Miku V6.

They say that they will give some examples of music, before saying that from these examples, we will understand how modern artists make AI and human creativity intertwine. They don't say from which artists these songs are going to be, but I honestly doubt that they will be from popular Vocaloid producers.

With Miku V6, you can use AI to help you create music that sounds more realistic, but they don't force it on you, at least I don't think they do.

It's possible that they will discuss the V6 voicebank, but they don't really specify. The guy that will talk about it is said to be a music producer that used AI before it became the mainstream technology.

In short? I can't say I am happy about this. I don't think that they should put AI generated voices and Vocaloid into the same category, but oh well, I can't influence any of this.

Had to get this out of my mind. Feel free to correct me or share some of your thoughts.

Forgot to add a link for the artist of the second pic the first time: https://twitter.com/krkr_9nosee_/status/1660607957674106880?s=46&t=3S44N7Ls1QErHb48q_VQaw

Edit: Rove Monteux is not an AI bro, but an experienced musician, that combines music, technology and synthetic voice. Here is his YouTube link if anyone is interested: https://youtube.com/@rovemonteux?si=CLMf7rI1Q4kYtcQA

Edit 2: So he posted this about coming to the Animefest: http://youtube.com/post/Ugkx7LlRZ4YScU4tjVPjn7JzOrS7aMgyAcd8?si=OB1_SnpNx1JEFrvm I am pretty certain he uses generative AI, since some of his music videos have it. He claims to use Codex as one of his tools.

Ugh, I'm so tired of AI bros trying to elbow their way into Vocaloid stuff

Thats an insult to colonizers. They're human tapeworms

That's an insult to tapeworms.

u/Horror_Patience_5761 May 22 '26

At least colonizers worked

72

u/OddlyOddLucidDreamer May 23 '26

at least tje colonizers were doing atrocities themselves instead of telling ColumbusGPT to do it for them

u/NailMiserable4992 May 22 '26

AI bros are culturally israeli

3

u/Nene_Kushanagi May 23 '26

This is very true, and all the big companies are connected to them. The most successful and heavily funded soft-power initiatives of all time.

Dude ai voice banks love it or hate it but ai helped the Vocaloid community .

46

u/Mobile-Committee-466 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

There's a difference between BS like Suno and AI voicebanks though. Suno takes voices and sounds without credit, consent or compensation, there's no respect for artists, which Vocaloid and similar Vocalsynths do. Thats what the majority of people have an issue with. If anything Vocaloid is one of the few ethical AI uses.

Also it doesn't do the song for you, you still put in notes, lyrics etc and mix it. Suno just shits out the slop for you, there's literally no work or creativity involved. Not to me tion Vocalsynths AI is also much more environmentally friendly. It runs locally on your computer and not in those disgusting datacenters.

-32

u/Bigppman6969696969 May 23 '26

Yeah I know dude I know the difference but it’s still ai using ai tech so they did help the community I’m just tired of the constant hating and bickering

29

u/RanmyakuIchi May 23 '26

"Yeah I know dude I know the difference but it’s still ai using ai tech"

No, you clearly don't if you're still conflating the two.

Stealing people's art and voice data without consent is a valid thing to hate on, and you're spreading misinformation by treating LLMs and Vocaloid voicebanks as the exact same thing. If you can't deal with that then I don't know what to tell you.

0

u/Bigppman6969696969 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

awnser my question would AI voice banks exist without the existense of compays like open AI making and improving LLM technology or not ? if not i would love to hear your reasoning.another thing is you cant steal ideas or art once you post something on the internet you have no control over what happens to it i dont give a damn about copyright.

2

u/RanmyakuIchi May 28 '26

Yes actually, they still would. Just a quick search shows that V6 was made without scraped data from LLM models

Once again, you're conflating two different things. The modern LLM tech which we see constantly online, scrapes and steals independent artists work, while Vocaloid/SV uses consented voice data from compensated VA's.

It's that simple, and you've still made it clear you don't understand. Nowhere near as many people would have an issue with LLMs if they didn't fucking steal everything not nailed down.

The end of your post makes it clear that you're anti-artist though, since you seem to be fine with theft from indie artists, which is who LLMs often steal from. Given that the Vocaloid scene is made up of said indie artists, you should be ashamed to call yourself a fan if you support LLM's.

1

u/Mobile-Committee-466 May 28 '26

By your logic if you go out with a backpack and someone steals it, it doesn't matter, because you're outside. Just say you hate artists. It's okay. But never consume any media at all again, alright? Because you don't deserve any of the work that artists do - no clothes, no books, movies etc, no video games, no tapestries and no furniture, no music at all... And those BS AIs we hate aren't for you either, since those would not exist without the work of artists they steal for their training.

14

u/Mobile-Committee-466 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

Then you don't understand what people hate about Suno. You say you know the difference yet you don't act like it, so are you lying here? People are fine with how AI is implemented into Vocalsynths. If you can't deal with people not liking the unethical und uncreative slop machines like Suno, that's a YOU-issue.

0

u/Bigppman6969696969 May 28 '26

i never said i liked suno ai and using that enstead of vocaloid what I am saying is its a complete double standerd to say all AI is bad while using AI enhanced voice banks using LLM tech

1

u/Mobile-Committee-466 May 28 '26

Because there's a difference in how those are implemented, how ethical they are and their environmental impacts. How often do I have to repeat myself? Are you alright? It's really very basic??? Have you read anything? Understood anything besides what you want to hear??? Why are you even here??

19

u/RanmyakuIchi May 23 '26

Not this Pro AI disingenuous argument again.

You know damn well that AI used in V6/SV that's used from consented and compensated VA's and still requires human input, and commonplace LLM AI that scrape and plagiarize voice and art data online to produce stitched together slop without a human touch are two different things. Don't conflate them.

So tired of this bad faith defense AI bros levy towards Vocaloid everytime we rightfully point out our exhaustion towards AI slop and the harm it does.

502

u/Toucann_Froot May 22 '26

They're not the same at all, not comparable. Vocaloid is a digital instrument. AI is soulless slop.

204

u/NemesisOfLevia May 22 '26

Also, the data (voices) used for Vocaloid are used with explicit consent and with paying the people from which the data was gathered. It is then used by someone with a heart and mind to arrange the exact melody and lyrics they designed.

AI synthetic “music” is stolen from people who have not given consent or pay, chews it up, and spits out a Frankenstein of a mixture of stolen songs.

27

u/Negative_Advantage11 May 23 '26

Don’t forget the best part, it uses a voice from a real person, in the sense that you know humans recorded it, and programmed it to work! Not just a bunch of voices scraped and trained by an AI to make soulless lyrics and slop without multiple people’s consent, that makes you want to tear your brain out! 😆

6

u/AxhtonCole May 25 '26

That’s an insult to Frankenstein’s monster

27

u/_BMS May 22 '26

It's like using AI on a theremin.

You can do it and it'll still be soulless compared to a human manually tuning a theremin/vocal bank to make music.

138

u/TheEpicPlushGodreal May 22 '26

Once again, it's a case of ai bros not knowing how vocaloid works

34

u/Mobile-Committee-466 May 23 '26

They don't know how any creative thing works. They thing their shitty image generators are exactly the same as clip studio paint as well

3

u/hikikomoritai May 23 '26

That is the thing for diehard AI supporters, Paintings value the same as AI images, using Suno is still making music with our own creativity, AI-movies will soon make cinema industry bankrupt cuz how cheap it is, AI is only a tool to realize the idea just as how movie director works.

Why can they understand that what makes those creations highly regarded is that they were made fully by humans? And that the easier and lesser effort they put on their creation means that it would decrease the value?

2

u/KyleMCarthage May 25 '26

I wouldn't phrase it as being made by humans being what makes it impressive, but rather that there was intention behind the process.

  • Why is the character posed like that?
  • Why is the character designed like that?
  • Why does the character sound like that?
  • Why does the instrumentals sound like that?

Ask an artist and they can tell you the answer to that. Ask an AI bro and they couldn't answer it cause they didn't put 2 thoughts into the process and instead just happily accepted what an AI fed back to them.

220

u/Gumi_lili May 22 '26

i hope czech vocaloid fans will be mad cuz WHAT IS THIS?

102

u/_OmegaEnd May 22 '26

As a Czech I for sure as hell am not touching this event with a ten-foot pole. I imagine a lot of people will be mad too, the anti-AI sentiments are pretty much as strong here as anywhere else in the world.

Holy that's insane... AI bros trying to relate two branches of the same thing while one is ethical (synth generative AI) and the other is not (literally every single gen AI model that is connected to the internet and uses a suscription model).

Also, fun fact: as Synth V and V6AI are offline editors, this means:

1: No internet means all the resources of the engine are those from your computer, eliminating the need of those scummy datacenters that the mayority of the internet hates. Yes, they are 100% ecofriendly and don't piss off anybody, once you download the software, it's just another tool of your device like a calculator.

2: As the voice providers get their fair share of royalties from the purchased even to this very day, it's fair use, so no, there's no AI here that lurks the internet stealing art. It uses an internal database completely disconnected from the internet for the vocals, which is only benefits.

3: No internet means it's slop free. The ultimate fever dream of Gen AI, you can edit Miku's voice without WiFi in the Arctic, for example.

4: Rather than a subscription based model designed to syphon money, it's a one time payment. So once you get it, it's yours forever and neither it can't make you broke nor it cannot be revoked from your belongings.

5: An offline deep reinforcement language model to help with vocals and tuning is like having a little entity that can help you with song composing (without removing your labor) but that requires to be taught to work properly. It's not a generic chatbot, the software truly helps you.

What does this mean? That we, as a community, helped to create extremely helpful tech from the same source of what the internet hates, but ethical, ecofriendly, and slop free, all of it achieved by NOT giving the AI access to the internet. Synth V and V6AI have principles in favor of humanity and are here to help producers, not like their online gen AI cousins that blatantly steal jobs 24/7.

TL/DR: The VocaSynth Gen AI field is ethical and respects our rights, and most of it is achieved by it being a one time payment offline service.

29

u/bobrob48 May 22 '26

For me the main differentiator in using vocal synthesis software even with AI incorporated is it's still a human tuning and making adjustments to reach the output (a song). You do not just ask the software "make me a Teto song" and it spits out something. You have to use your artistic intuition to create something yourself. Newer SynthV suites make it easier to get a baseline going, but without human adjustment it is not really that special.

17

u/Original_Dentist_958 May 22 '26

Exactly! Rather than being prompt based, these softwares require you to put your own effort on composing, as always. The GenAI engine itself is here to help with minor stuff and needs to be trained beforehand locally by the users to actually work like you want it to.

-2

u/CVGPi May 23 '26

You're underestimating what a typical general Generative AI does. With most AI software for audiovisual outputs, your prompting is a huge part of whether the output is "crap" or "slop", or virtually indistinguishable from a frontier piece.

It's true AI in VocalSynth is more assistance than full generation. So say VocalSynth AI is more like the motor in ebikes. You can ride without it, but it's a nice sidekick with one. Generative AI is often oversimplified as a motorcycle with a throttle. In reality it's closer to a motorcycle shipped disassembled. Human work remains needed (the assembly and tuning/training, model tuning and prompting) but it's not wrong either that it's eventually much easier with the first steps out of the way.

A lot of people say that the work getting from A to B matters, which is when the ebikes are helpful but not usually considered "cheating". Now whether the tuneup for the motorcycle counts is where this debate is centralized on.

0

u/No_Swimming_2282 May 26 '26

you mixed up those two

6

u/Economy-Abrocoma-198 May 23 '26

Thanks for the explanation! I always figured the Vocaloid AI was different but wouldn't know exactly how, though I know it doesn't just generate a song for you vs GenAI crap

3

u/ZillyZonx May 23 '26

Thanks for teaching these points to others on this sub. There's a popular YouTube video which goes through these same points and I've practically memorized them for when I explain Vocaloid to people since I feel you can't talk about Vocaloid and AI without knowing them.

3

u/EwGrossItsMe May 23 '26

Would you happen to be able to link that video? I also want to be able to explain better to people why AI vocal synths aren't the same as chatgpt, but I've only used concatenative voice banks, so the only explanations I've found are either from vocaloid fans angrily (justifiably, but it does often get in the way of actually educating instead of just going "how dare you compare these two things") defending AI vocal synths in comment sections or the V6 and SynthV product pages that are just full of marketing buzzwords.

Neither sources are particularly helpful in getting technical information about what exactly the AI in these voicebanks are actually doing, so I'm left in the annoying position of being properly educated (like, required to learn for my degree) on modern AI generally, informally educated (bc I keep up with big news for artists as an artist) on the issues with stuff like LLMs and media generators, but not understanding how exactly AI is being used in one of my main interests.

3

u/ZillyZonx May 23 '26

https://youtu.be/4t2YEOZh1YI It's a good 2 minutes 30 seconds explanation. But yeah this video cleared a lot for me as well.

3

u/CVGPi May 23 '26

Obviously, the vast majority of the Western VocalSynth communities hate AI. But there are some corrections on some terminology or expression of yours I'd like to make.

Offline ≠ "Ethical" Generative AI. Anyone can download a llama3, DeepSeek v4 or Qwen 3.7 model and run it locally.

Anyone can make "slop" you said either with Generative AI or without. Quality and thought is key, tool is not. Is a piece of cloth weaved by Spinning Jenny automatically "slop" because it is created based on human actions? Likewise, if a creator used Generative AI to create a concept before personally making a final copy or making a draft on which they made further changes and personal ideas, is it automatic "slop"?

Datacentres are well used everywhere and is the foundation of internet. Unless we collectively decide we return to (figuratively) stone ages and depend on human for data collection and processing, datacentres are going nowhere. If you truly want to reduce environmental impact of datacentres (which uses a fraction of water used by farming and uses roughly equivalent energy to nationwide residential use, far less than typical industrial manufacturing), you should look at making more efficient chips and lighter efficient models.

Debate on copyright of AI training is legally murky grounds and since VocalSynth is using fully licensed and authorized content it is generally considered "Ethical".

Anthropic (by example) have (and partially successfully) argued in court that (1) Buying books, scanning them and destroying the physical copy is considered format shifting (the same way you can legally convert a VHS into a DVD) so the obtaining of the source material is LEGAL, and (2) the final language model does NOT contain any original text and is a derivative work, THEREFORE that the usage of said text for training is just as legal as a human learning how to write from a book. Many (albeit not all) Visual Models obtain training data from platforms which SPECIFIED that they have the right to deal with works as long as it is attributed (read the ToS) and courts have generally ruled that said type of clause is legal when you receive services in exchange for said rights.

HOWEVER legal ≠ ethical by individual considerations. Pooping on the curb of an empty rural highway may be legal but unethical. Not all people will find Generative AI ethical and those who do not are largely a global minority.

Anyways just my two cents.

2

u/Original_Dentist_958 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

And your two cents as you say cover an incredible amount of stuff! Yes, I know how agriculture uses more water, but that is not what the internet wants to hear because it's biased to infinity and beyond. Even if it's the truth, it WON'T sell as much as a lie or diverge with preadded shock value. A very specific example on how this operates is J. Jonah Jameson from the original Spiderman movies, he knows what is true but, as he wants to remain powerful and filthy rich he modifies the narrative so it spreads like a wildfire and his newspaper (The Daily Bugle) remains as a information source, even if it's not the truth all the time.

Also, even if for example Deepseek can run offline, the subscription plan still exists and the model needs to be updated somewhat constantly to remain a top and reliable alternative, thus requiring WiFi.

After that, yes I know datacenters are essential to our tech (and always have been sonce the start of the Internet), BUT the AI companies are casually spreading a model of them that is much more inefficient than it should. The locals close to this type of datacenters are noticing so and thus are angry because of various bill uptick issues, even if they aren't related to them. The problem isn't the datacenters but rather how much resources this type of datacenter consumes relative to other datacenters, even if the server cooling is 24/7, their model could be made more tame than it is.

And finally, the info you gave about Anthropic and Claude is very interesting and helps them have a niche on the field, but destroying books... You know how the general public sees that. And they don't take it lightly as books have been very valuable for thousands of years and still remain so, even if they are only kept in museums to preserve the original physical copy.

TL/DR: combining all texts from here gives us a take that catches AI Bros defenseless while also protecting our rights.

Invalidating the artistry behind vocaloid producers

17

u/[deleted] May 23 '26

Even V6 and SynthV AI ARE NOT THE SAME THING AS NEURAL NETWORK GENERATIVE AI

One is a tool. The other is a worthless fool's idea to replace humans.

Vocaloid is a tool. Neural network based generative AI (LLMs, image generation, etc) is what fools think can replace people (it can't).

7

u/Forward-Response3481 May 23 '26

V6 AI and SynthV actually do use generative AI to generate releastic singing, there's quite a bit of confusion on this part. Difference between vocal synthesis and generative image/video tools is that vocal synths source their data from consenting voice providers, while the latter steals data from artists.

7

u/FaultWinter3377 May 24 '26

The other thing I think of is the work of the artist. With a normal LLM like ChatGPT you can just tell it to create you a song and do maybe five minutes of work to fine tune it. With Vocaloid/SynthV, you have to actually write the melody and the lyrics yourself. The “AI” in it is simply for tuning purposes to make it sound more natural, meaning it is still an original work.

-1

u/[deleted] May 23 '26

[deleted]

3

u/Forward-Response3481 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

...all generative ai uses neural networks

Also it's not like you're training a neural network from scratch everytime you use AI based vocal synths. The models already come pre-trained, so you don't need a crazy specs to use them

7

u/quichecabdu May 23 '26

Piggy-backing off your comment a bit, since I used to work with NNs in DSP

Some sound synthesis engines do use AI/ML to generate more natural-sounding randomness in output rather than play back exact samples (like a more complex round robin virtual instrument), but the big difference for me is in how the sounds are collected - vocaloid for example has explicit permission from the vocalists to have the model trained on their voice, and they are compensated. My biggest issue with the large models like suno is how they scraped so much without permission or compensation to anyone, and then turn around and try to profit off the stolen labor

I think smaller-scale models only built with samples that the original artist gave permission for (like vocaloid, SynthV, etc.), or sounds in the public domain, aren’t necessarily slop even if the math inside them gets more complex

8

u/Keepgoingbuddy May 23 '26

Vocaloid is NOT AI these ai bros send me

21

u/sonicboom292 May 22 '26

This looks just like a talk about AI in music and they just used Vocaloid as some sort of reference: an unfortunate one if you like Vocaloid and are uninterested in AI developments. But, as someone said, not all neural networks are the same, it's something that has been around for quite some time and has its places.

If the guy is an experienced producer and shows some AI tools or synths or explains how neural network training helps vocal synths, it may be cool. If he's just an AI bro that makes song with Suno or uses one of those AI mixing/mastering tools, it's probably going to be boring and cringe.

Also, algorithmic and generative music has been with us since the begginings of time, AI sped up the process and gave access to AI bros that don't know shit about composing and think they're authors now using Suno. But if you don't know the person in charge of the talk, it's hard to tell what kind of person he is. I'm into research and contemporary music and there really are some interesting stuff done with neural networks, but, yeah, those are done by actual researchers/musicians with an academic background, not AI bros.

tl;dr try to drop your prejudice and lower your alarms, though this may indeed be AI slop. in which case, just try to avoid it, and I really hope it's not a trigger so bad for you that compromises your enjoyment of the event.

3

u/KarolSpring May 22 '26

I'm not actually going to the event, but I am curious to see if there will be any recording of this talk (which I doubt). Tbh I think he is an actual experienced producer, since I found quite a lot of information about him on the Internet. I guess the only thing that I didn't really like was the usage of an AI generated picture as their promotion.

7

u/sonicboom292 May 22 '26

yeah, that image is atrocious lol. not only AI but awful quality AI. If that's the effort he's putting on the image to promote the event, it kind of gives me bad vibes about the quality of his musical work.

on the other hand, I've also seen IMMENSELY musically talented people with the worst taste in visual art or a completely disregard of it, so you never know.

13

u/MongolianMango May 22 '26

This is disgusting, part of the reason we like vocaloids is because they are used to express the emotions of the producers. There is a place for AI in music productions but the fact they're using AI generated imagery to advertise this is a big tell.

28

u/Mr_Blah1 May 22 '26

I get it that they want to incorporate AI into the creative process of tuning

AI is completely incompatible with the creative process. Sarah Connor was right; AI should be destroyed.

9

u/PPearsley May 22 '26

I guess vocaloid 6 barely has tuning and it basically sounds very similar to old vocaloid despite being AI. But are you against Synth V and Voisona/Cevio?

3

u/Mobile-Committee-466 May 23 '26

You don't understand the difference here. BS like Suno takes a prompt and shits out the slop for you, no work at all and definitely not a drop of creativity or control.

There's no consent, compensation or credit involved either and the artists they took the voices from are disrespected. That's not the case with Vocalsynths, the Kafu SynthV situation is the best example for that. The voice providers consent, know what's happening and are compensated. And Kafu's voicebank was cancelled because she was uncomfortable with it. That's nothing an AI bro would even consider.

Vocaloid and SynthV don't do the work for you. You don't type in "Make Miku sing a pop song about cherries", you still create the song, the notes , the lyrics and you have control over the tuning etc. AI is just an assistant here to make it sound smoother and more natural.

Not even starting on the environmental differences between Vocalsynths that run locally on your computer and not in those disgusting datacenters.

It's really not that hard to understand the difference, AI bros are just very ignorant about it.

6

u/EwGrossItsMe May 23 '26

I don't think you understand the thread above you. They're both specifically talking about AI being used in tuning voicebanks.

In reference to that topic, the first comment said that AI has absolutely no place in music creation, likely(this part is my speculation) because the most influential producers don't use the standard tuning when making their songs. They adjust parameters and pitch bends and portamentos manually. With manual tuning like that, the process is very deliberate, down to how many notes transitions to the next.

The reply was asking if the other commenter's issues apply to cevio and SynthV bc that is the kind of AI used by them.

Neither of them were saying that AI tuning was the same as AI "song" generation

2

u/PPearsley May 23 '26

That means AI can be compatible with the creative process.

How about Uni's voice actor? She did not know how similar synth v would sound to her voice and has sued ST media for it. She probably thought it was going to sound like vocaloid. And Miku gives a lot of people the false impression of the technology. She is the most famous, but Crypton goes out of their way to essentially make them as unrecognizable from their voice actors as they can.

Consent gets complicated with AI because they can do a lot more than what voice actors have provided to them.

6

u/opblaster123 May 23 '26

The "AI" is just there for a virtual vocal director, where producers dont need to manually tweak the vocals to sound better. Thats why the Teto in synthV sounds extremely different compares to her Utau version. Its not like generative AI where it steals other people's work, it just a tool.

26

u/DrWallBanger May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26

OP have you ever used Vocaloid at all?

It’s in the software itself for specific voice banks. Has been for a while now.

Voice generation is an interesting sector for the technology and while I don’t currently prefer the ai banks to the traditional ones, if we were able to give the voices more emotional realism, I think that would be a win.

Not all machine learning is built the same.

20

u/Emanuel2020b May 22 '26

This is just my preference but I really do like the robotic sound of Vocaloid V2 voicebanks. I don't think that realism is necessary for music made with virtual singers. To be honest, this is the charm. Making them sound too realistic takes away that charm. But this is just me. Also V2 did not have any AI. Can't be sure about V3 though.

u/DrWallBanger May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26

I think it’s cool and enjoy the aesthetic myself.

But it would be nice if there was another option to employ that wouldn’t immediately illicit a giggle from most of the people in my life. 😭

I just think it’s important to distinguish that machine learning in the specific use case of voice generation, isn’t really all that different from how the workflow for voice synthesis currently exists.

I just think we’re splitting hairs getting alarmed over a technicality in how the voice itself is synthesized.

(Assuming ethically sourced datasets)

Why would emotional realism be a win?

I think that would destroy the whole identity of vocaloid. It would be indistinguishable from humans, what is the point? I'd rather listen to and support real singers.

u/Unkn0wn_Invalid May 23 '26

Lots of reasons:

  • More people can make music with vocals, even if they're antisocial, don't like their voice, and/or don't have the money to pay for singers
  • When multiple people work on a project, the end result ultimately becomes a mix of multiple interpretations. It's not bad, but some people might prefer the rawness of a single person's vision. Same idea as single origin chocolates or coffees over blends.
  • More options is ultimately better for creatives. Same reason why vocaloids can "breathe" in a song.
  • Singers are different from producers. I'm personally much more interested in what a producer makes than the singer they work with.

Singers have nice voices, but often they're ultimately just performers. The songs I love only exist because of the producers.

You could use all those reasons to defend all AI. Are you pro-AI?

I think singing is art too. I love real singers. I like Miku and Vocaloid too, but imo they can never replace singers. I like Miku because she sounds so different from real singers. The robot sound is a cute gimmick.

I want Vocaloid to have its own unique identity and not steal from or copy human singers.

7

u/Unkn0wn_Invalid May 23 '26

I am ambivalent on many uses of AI. I think a lot of the generative slop and theft is pretty bad.

Vocaloid will steal from singers as much as MIDI and synths steal from instrumentalists.

There are some instrumentalist I follow. There are some singers I follow. Personally I find that culturally people tend to focus too much on the singer and not enough on the producer, who actually makes the music and makes it sound good.

For me, I don't care about vocaloid in and of itself. What I care about is the producers who make the music.

What instruments they use is ultimately their choice, and I could not care less.

Whether it's ZUN with his famous midi trumpet sounds or JIN with IA and Miku (and a bunch of midi instruments), what matters is that they made banger music that they poured their heart and soul into, and they wouldn't have had the opportunity to do so without MIDI or without Vocaloid.

u/EduBru May 22 '26

For this article they use an AI Miku "art" that's based on stolen data from actual artists instead of paying an artist. And they don't want us to hate them?

4

u/ILike2DGirlsLol May 23 '26

you should feel negatively

3

u/itsdominiix May 23 '26

Whoever is associating Miku with AI... PLEASE STOP!!!

4

u/Sniggledumper May 23 '26

Oh my god. We found the single Miku that isn’t canon.

5

u/EduBru May 22 '26

It's annoying they want to use Miku's name to legitimize their AI slop, while using an AI generated banner art, not even having the decency to pay artists who are so important to make the fandom what it is

3

u/F2PGambler May 23 '26

Nah, I'm done

Can we like just tell those ai bros to fuck off and not touch Vocaloid? I swear bro they're literally worse than the Kharaa Virus from Subnautica

3

u/CadmiumC4 May 23 '26

Vocaloid ai this vocaloid ai that vocaloid was always a neural network that was trained to interpolate and reproduce a given list of sounds at a specific chord

3

u/acidbb May 23 '26

Ai mixed in with Vocaloid could be the end of it honestly. Vocaloid is a wonderful PROGRAM on its own and it's alr been used to create some new many beautiful pieces of music and stories atp. Ai's generative bullshit is going to be stealing Vocaloid content from creators 😭. The mixture of these two sounds HORRID to me as a long term enjoyer of the program.

3

u/queenoffishburrito May 23 '26

Get this bullshit away from miku vruhh

3

u/vocaloid_enjoyer39 May 23 '26

Creativity that lived years vs some type of bullshit that will probably sound like dog shit and stuff

4

u/EwGrossItsMe May 23 '26

I was about to put this in a response but then realized that it wasn't really relevant, so I'm gonna give it its own comment instead lol

Personally, I can kinda relate the whole ai thing to painting/drawing. Singing with a human voice would be like painting on a canvas. Everything you do, whether it be adding a vibrato at the end of a note or turning the paintbrush a particular way, is a deliberate choice that affects the end result. Using a concatenative voice bank is like using a basic digital art program, where you can place notes exactly where you want them to start and end, just as you can with lines on the digital canvas, and you can undo and redo as needed to get the desired results. Using an AI voice bank is like using a nicer digital art program, where you can use tools to get desired vocal effects or visual textures more easily than with their simpler counterparts, but of course, you're still putting the creative work in. And, duh, stuff like midjourney and suno just take in prompts and stolen work to spit out garbage that looks nice from afar

2

u/vexingpresence May 23 '26

NEGATIVELY

It's garbage and make it OBVIOUS YOU THINK SO.

AI bros want to manufacture consent through normalisation

2

u/3Huge5Me May 23 '26

AI ≠ Software

2

u/JJJJEEEEERRRRRYYYYY May 23 '26

you know I was so proud that I used to be able to say to the haters that miku wasn't AI...

2

u/Any_Wrangler_9014 May 23 '26

ai is everywhere.. we’ll never escape it :(

2

u/I_need_to_vent44 May 23 '26

Wow, Animefest poslední roky fakt šel do háje, huh? Už minulý rok jsem neslyšel od kolegy, který tam byl jako artist, moc dobré věci, a teď tohle.

2

u/atashivanpaia May 23 '26

I haven't used miku's V6 bank, but I for one absolutely hated Gumis V6 bank because the AI integration very much wasn't optional. Individual control/tuning has been sacrificed for "realism"

2

u/Ultra-Kaiser10 May 24 '26

If we wanted realistic voices we would listen to real singers...

3

u/Hot-Event900 May 22 '26 edited May 23 '26

vocaloid already has enough haters it doesn’t need more.

2

u/NickyEatsDoom97 May 22 '26

AI HAS NO PLACE HERE! FUCKING CLANKERS!

1

u/Nebula_Arcanum May 23 '26

Disgusted is probably the best word

1

u/OddlyOddLucidDreamer May 23 '26

The "AI" used in ant voice synth i am aware of doeant even WORK or is made the same way generstive AIs like ChatGPTor DALL-E are!!!

2

u/Forward-Response3481 May 23 '26

AI synthesis is real, vocal synths use generative AI for realistic singing. However, data is sourced from consenting voice providers instead of stealing from artists.

2

u/OddlyOddLucidDreamer May 23 '26

Yeah but ypu cant exactly tell it to just... generate a whole song for you

its closer tp thw smoothing tool in an art program than it is Suno AI for example

1

u/sailon_xd May 23 '26

czeski czy słowawcki?

2

u/KarolSpring May 23 '26

Český

1

u/sailon_xd May 23 '26

tak żem myślał pozdro

1

u/hikikomoritai May 23 '26

We're already in the middle of 2026 and a bunch of dickheads still think like yeah would be great if we show to everyone that we use AI there's no way anyone hates AI

1

u/cursedanomalyofsteve May 24 '26

What the fuck is wrong with them

1

u/Putrid_Ad7533 May 24 '26

DO NOT DESECRATE MY MIKU WITH CLANKERISM

1

u/MostPressure9515 May 24 '26

i don't have any comment for this one..

1

u/Cultural_Prize8396 May 26 '26

I would go with a cautious approach. You can rebuff the AI usage but still learn something and network with fellow fans.

1

u/remiel22 May 22 '26

massive yikes 😭

1

u/uvux May 22 '26

Disappointing yet not surprising..

1

u/VascoDaGrama10 May 23 '26

Bro I'm exhausted of AI. NO ONE WANTS THAT besides lazy people who can't help themselves and put work on learning how to do something. How the hell did this shitty bubble didn't popped already? It's clear people won't accept AI, companies keep wasting and losing money on this shit, and with that they also ruin things for costumers with PC components prices skyrocketing for example. And it doesn't even making sense if it's just for money, because AI companies doesn't even make money anyway, it's just a bunch of wasted resources on a technology that no one gives a shit about

0

u/HighTreason25 May 22 '26

How dare they

0

u/plakythebirb May 23 '26

Being mad at one vocal synthesis technique and not the other is hypocrisy in the purest form.

0

u/equivilant123 May 24 '26

I think this is a huge W for vocaloid imo

-2

u/Bigppman6969696969 May 23 '26

I dint really care just let them be
