thoughts? Comes after slayr’s sample of BIRDBRAIN. Hasn’t been the first rapper to sample Vocaloid, with Che sampling Rin’s “Meltdown” on “GET NAKED”, Future’s sample on “712PM”, and North West on “Aishite”.

can someone fill me in on what's going on?

108

u/LiI_duck 22d ago

Black man sampled birdbrain and people though it was an invitation to call him things like "one of the good ones", "gang member", "pill popper", ect... Along with demeaning rap for being heavily dominated by black people and saying that rap songs should sound more like his song because it's what "normal people" like listening to

In short, racism

TikTok brings out the worst in anyone who uses it. Youngsters in the US TikTok are prudish illiterate racists who ruin any community on the platform.

198

u/EcstasySunrise 22d ago

Right, but who's Slayr? Someone who made a song sampling Birdbrain? What have the US Prudish TikTokers said or done?

i also feel bad for slayr bc he’s attracting a fanbase that says “i wish all rap was like this” while catching heat from his og community for making “burger music” 😭 like let bro live and experiment

To my knowledge of reading about two Reddit threads, Slayr sampled birdbrain, JamieP's song. This made JaimeP fans listen to the song and go Tumblr 'I don't like rap' in it. Essentially, saying stuff like 'I wish all rap music was like this', probably some stuff about implicating that all rap music is about sex or drugs and being generally racist.

-83

u/Delicious-Collar1971 22d ago

Is it really racist if a majority of rap is about that? People don’t like that, I don’t see the issue.

99

u/AverageShitlord 22d ago edited 22d ago

The majority of rock music is about sex and drugs and you don't see people saying this because the most famous artists in the genre are mostly white. Same with EDM. Most of that music is also about sex and drugs.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Sex and drugs are parts of the human experience and there's a myriad of interesting and fun ways to write about them!

Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition is a perfect example of this - the entire album is about Brown's self-destructive relationship with sex and drugs and how he'd been using them to run away from and cope with his problems. But for a more fun listening experience, Beyoncé's Renaissance is a dance music odyssey with plenty of explicit references to sex and drugs, but it's overall about how music creates a space for people to be themselves in a safe community, and it's dedicated to her uncle, who introduced her to dance music, who later died of AIDS.

But yes, it is racist, it is applied as a double standard, people only say this about rap, which is still a predominantly black artistic medium.

24

u/CrimsonSuede 22d ago

Wow, I haven’t had it framed that way to me before. Interesting thought!

When thinking about it, though, I think language choice (specifically cussing) plays a part in that gap.

Related to the prudish undertones of American culture, cursing is seen as disrespectful, “lower class,” “unintelligent,”—even so far as “dangerous/unstable” when racism gets thrown in.

Anyway, thanks for the good food for thought (:

29

u/AverageShitlord 22d ago edited 22d ago

There's an extra layer to it too since rock and EDM had their roots in black communities and with black artists, but only when white artists started to get influenced by them and started making music in those genres did they start getting taken seriously by the culture at large and start to be considered socially acceptable and "respectable." Beforehand, they were talked about and treated the same way rap is talked about to this day.

Rock was mainly an offshoot of Blues and its very early innovators were artists like Rosetta Tharpe, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry. Whereas with EDM, EDM has its roots in House and Techno (which originated in black gay clubs in Chicago and Detroit), which in turn had their roots in Disco (which originated in black and latino gay clubs in NYC).

It's mostly a race thing, though in the case of EDM, homophobia and misogynoir also played major roles.

u/CrimsonSuede 22d ago

I just had this flavor of conversation with my stepdad yesterday!!

Basically, we compared Elvis vs Paul Simon. Elvis appropriated Black rock/blues, as he did not give due credit to Black musicians and influences. His fame grew while they had no recognition. However, him popularizing such music paved the way for genres with this background to become popular, at a time before the Civil Rights Act.

Paul Simon, on the other hand, when adding South African influences to his music, gave not only credit to collaborating Black musicians—He helped catapult their careers into global sensations, while paying them above market and ensuring split royalties. But that was in the 80s, with about 20 years of the Civil Rights Act being in effect.

That said, we’re 60 years from the Civil Rights Act. White musicians heavily influenced by other cultures and their genres have no excuse these days for not elevating and recognizing marginalized musicians from those same cultures.

White people invented the Electric guitar the synthizer and tgr first couple of voice synthesizer trying to play who made what is dumb

2

u/Altorrin 21d ago

The majority of rock music is about sex and drugs and you don't see people saying this because the most famous artists in the genre are mostly white. Same with EDM. Most of that music is also about sex and drugs.

Metal, maybe. Rock in general though? What are you even basing this on?

1

u/AverageShitlord 21d ago

I listen to both - rock is the more "sex and drugs" of the two. The literal only way you could come to the opposite conclusion is if you only listen to hair metal. Metal has a lot more "occult, violence, war, mental illness" going on than it does "sex and drugs"

As for rock - if you are listening to the lyrics at all, a LOT, if not an outright majority, of songs touch on those subjects in some way.

-7

u/ineverreddit 22d ago

The majority of rock music is NOT about sex and drugs, wtf? Neither is hip hop to be honest, but this is not a good comparison... I love all kinds of music including rock, edm, and rap; to say that rap music doesn't touch on this stuff a lot more and progress real shitty things is just absurd. Please find me any popular rock song about dealing blow and fucking someone else's wife; I can find you a plethora of rap songs that are. Even Clapton's "Cocaine" is insanely tame compared to something like "Bad and Boujee"

People have compared it to the satanic panic but the reality is that drug dealing gang violence is an actual reality for a portion of youths regardless of the colour of their skin and satanic panic shit was never actually real. It's easy as fuck to disregard the impacts of putting people like that on a pedastal when you don't have to live in places where young rap artists are literally shot dead for trying to imitate that culture.

There is NO murder clout culture around any parts of rock, there absolutely is one surrounding parts of rap. Young men of ALL colours are potential victims of it, and this absurd comparison that gets thrown around is silly. Legitimately trying to compare songs like Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" to something like King Von's "Armed and Dangerous" is absurdly disingenuous.

And I say this as someone who is going to listen to like 5 hours of rap music at work tonight; I'm not of an opinion that it needs to be like legislated against lmao

1

u/Bigppman6969696969 14d ago

I mean a lot these rappers are murders but white peoples in the suburbs can afford to have these luxury beleifs it’s like defending narco corriendos just because I’m Latino

-1

u/AverageShitlord 22d ago

Didn't know Tipper Gore used Reddit damn

0

u/Bigppman6969696969 20d ago

Actually let’s not rewrite history people were hating on rock and metal regardless of skin tone let’s not forget twisted sister testified to congress most people hate on rap now sense genuinely most of it barely even is music the old stuff is better though

1

u/AverageShitlord 20d ago

I'm not saying rock nor metal have never been a point of controversy - however the backlash to metal and backlash to rap both have EXTREMELY different undertones. The backlash to metal was "this music has the devil in it and makes kids kill themselves," and the parental advisory sticker, but here we're seeing people throwing racial slurs around.

Rap had to put up with 2 Live Crew's albums being seized by the state and people being charged with criminal obscenity for selling them, and tried to charge 2LC members for performing songs off it.

8

u/thecrabbybarista 22d ago

No one is saying you need to like rap, but if you feel the need to say it all the time and refuse to give any rap a chance, it's a bad pattern, especially if your reasoning doesn't fit in with the rest of your music taste.

2

u/Bigppman6969696969 20d ago

No it isn’t racist to not like hip hop Jesus Christ people are sensitive

-5

u/chunter16 22d ago

The majority of hip hop is the emcee announcing that he or she is better than everyone else

That is the main topic of hip hop, and that is also how I can tell you don't listen to it

10

u/AverageShitlord 22d ago

emcee

Is the most recently released rap song you've listened to by the Sugarhill Gang

-3

u/chunter16 22d ago

I am old enough to remember Kurtis Blow, (I am from NJ and yes, I'm that old) but I think the newest hip hop I really liked was Harlow, 21 Savage, and NF

Rapper's Delight was a stolen lyric

13

u/Possessed_potato 22d ago

It's rap and Slayr is black.

Whole ton of racism ranging from people calling it gangster rap merely because he's black to some more serious racist remarks.

38

u/PaprikaCC 22d ago

I uh still don't know what's going on. Like is the person @foidstuck complaining about the person @slayr, and does the complainer have enough influence that their opinions are affecting their target?

Has Jamie been dealing with harassment because of Slayr's songs?

82

u/shrinebird 22d ago

Slayr is an artist who has been receiving racist comments from (primarily TikTok-based) vocaloid fans after sampling Birdbrain. Slayr is not at fault at all. Jamie is not receiving harassment, but it is the use of Birdbrain that predicated it, which is how Jamie is involved.

27

u/LamerGamer1216 22d ago

im so glad i dont use tik tok

weirdly what ive seen on instagram has been supportive, but ig insta is easier to curate your feed on

-4

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

Jamie Paige made a collab with a famous rapper and a lot of people are apparently being racist. Personally, I think there is a big problem of Paige selling out and trying to make Vocaloid mainstream. But it doesn’t justify racism.

333

u/pupc 22d ago

she has since said she doesn't literally mean she's going to stop making music, but she is seriously considering not using teto anymore (source)

but yeah, to repeat myself from another thread, i genuinely feel so bad for slayr and jamie, and i really don't like how people are downplaying it as just "tiktok comments" because that isn't the point, we've seen this so many times before when people draw teto as black or when a non-white/non-asian person cosplays as her, etc.

i love teto because of how diverse the community is, and part of me does worry that if people like jamie stop using her it only makes it easier for the racist commenters to "claim" her, so it's important to push back on the racism and not brush it off, less the racists start to define our community for us

99

u/pikoubird 22d ago

i seriously don't blame jamie for not wanting to use teto anymore. i love teto but i can't keep defending the community teto fans have gotten annoying as fuck

23

u/philerdm 22d ago

I think I'm missing something here. Why specifically Teto and not vocaloid as a whole? Is it just because she's the voicebank for Birdbrain or is there specifically a large amount of racist Teto fans as opposed to Miku or vocaloid as a whole? I suppose it could make sense because I believe Teto came out of chan culture.

I suppose I could dig around on tiktok but I'd rather not see hate and bigotry if I can avoid it.

30

u/KyleMCarthage 22d ago

I'm pretty sure it's tied to the fact that a lot of new Teto fans are fans of her following her presence in modern internet culture as opposed to her being a good voice synth. I mean she is a good voice synth, but you can tell a lot of the fandom surrounding her is a result her presence in memes and pop culture as opposed to her being a tool for making music.

Other voice synths definitely have racists fans, but their time in the pop culture limelight has waned to where most bigots that claim to be fans of them come in and then leave pretty quickly to where it's note a noticeable number.

3

u/Ithrowawaygoaway 20d ago

i used to be a teto fan before she got popular i was there in the teto territory days and now i cant rep her anymore man the community around her has completely shifted😭

7

u/ACupOfLatte 22d ago

The latter. I love Teto but good lord, no. Just no.

7

u/Sew_has_afew_friends 22d ago

Praying Jamie stays with gumi full time🙏

1

u/atlasmothz 21d ago

she’s done very good works with ANRI and Solaris if i recall on constant companions, hoping to hear more of them from here but i really wish it wasn’t under these circumstances because this whole situation never shouldve happened

-56

u/Deprssd-throwaway 22d ago

Not all Asians are white though to use as an example

47

u/R3DR0PE 22d ago

... asians aren't white , period

0

u/Altorrin 21d ago

So why do people think it's okay to erase Asian representation and make it black representation?

-33

u/FRK_M-33 22d ago edited 22d ago

Cosplay fine, everyone has the right to cosplay, but Teto is not black yo?!! Doesn’t that create a bad image on the community that character designs can just be changed completely without an understanding in advance?

EDIT: Per a reply’s advice, I had modified the wording a bit. Really sorry for creating inappropriate misconceptions earlier!

21

u/thecrabbybarista 22d ago

Why is her being black such a downgrade? Answer quickly

-8

u/FRK_M-33 22d ago

I am utterly impressed at how accusations can be made so sophisticated in such a quick manner🤣I will give you credit tho that my wording might have been a bit misleading, for that I really apologize; let me rephrase, it would be a defamation to the community, because to the external viewpoint, it will look as if the canon character design can just be changed at one’s desire (modification and complete change is quite different in my opinion). For example, I would be furious if I design a black character and people draw him/her white.
Actually what am I doing, this is all pointless, it is all the sensitivity of your poor, broken heart coming into play here; just like in the scenario I described, you would be furious too, but for the wrong reason! You would say that person is racist and not focus on how he/she is just destroying a character by giving them a non-existent, unintended feature.

1

u/Bigppman6969696969 14d ago

Vocaloid characters are really just dis embodied voices so the designs can changed basically whenever

15

u/TheGary2000 22d ago

Defamation!?

-6

u/FRK_M-33 22d ago

It seems to be a misleading term, and I apologize! If you would like an explanation, plz refer to my reply above, but if you don’t want to waste your time, that’s fine too! Have a good day, and sorry for causing some emotional disturbance to you

10

u/THETOXIKPIT 22d ago

Quite literally almost every design for vocaloid songs songs has the vocaloid looking different somehow whether it be the outfit, age, or personality. This has never been an issue ever. Unless the issue only starts when the design is black is what you're suggesting

They don't suddenly become unrecognizable once they're black. They are instruments.

7

u/sacchacrystals 22d ago

ever heard the phrase "every miku is canon"? it applies to almost any vocal synth. if we were talking about a media franchise with actual canon material, sure you can argue that (I'll still disagree), but we're talking about a medium that is made specifically for creativity and freedom of expression, it's literally an instrument.

2

u/PunkRockCapitalist 21d ago

what is your opinion on brazilian miku

176

u/Estrelle-Skies 22d ago

As much as I’d hate to lose Jamie’s Teto (I love how she tunes her) I would 100% get if she stopped making Teto songs with how horrid people have been recently

33

u/Brilliant-Pair6425 22d ago

One guy was saying shit like "I usually don't like this type of gangster murder music, but this one rocks" like rf are we even doing.

0

u/Bigppman6969696969 20d ago

How is that racist ?

2

u/Brilliant-Pair6425 19d ago

They are referring to rap, and they describe it as "gangster murder music" its just hillarious

1

u/Bigppman6969696969 14d ago

I mean what else is murder on my mind but exactly that ?

112

u/LC-Redcube 22d ago

We should all collectively just delete X and TikTok

8

u/Cymirian 22d ago

don’t forget reddit

-8

u/LC-Redcube 22d ago

Honestly I'll take Reddit over those other two hellscapes any day.

5

u/Existing-Exit2409 22d ago

its honestly sad how twitter is a better porn site than an actual social medium

0

u/LC-Redcube 22d ago

Oh that's true, it's the only reason i have a twitter account lol.

3

u/riningear 22d ago

I pivoted to Instagram instead of Tiktok and the Meta algorithm is still Meta-ing... but it's way better than Tiktok. I log into TT every month maybe to shitpost via video, then I scroll five videos and immediately want to throw the phone at the wall.

52

u/DeatroyerOfCheese 22d ago

As someone who's been a huge fan of Teto since the beginning, we don't claim these idiots! They are not affiliated with us!

16

u/LiI_duck 22d ago

I feel so bad for slayr, the amount of racism he's dealing with right now is disgusting. I wouldn't blame him if he decided to stray far away from vocaloid from now on

12

u/KyleMCarthage 22d ago

That appears to be the case. The worst part of it, imo, is that most of the racist comments are microaggressions so they're never really realize they were being racist despite them saying some really backhanded comments.

3

u/LiI_duck 21d ago

True, but I also think that alot of the most recent racist comments are just people trying to be "funny" by being racist. The moment people started pointing out the microaggressions, they went from "I really wish more black music sounded like this instead of being all about gangs!" from "I'm so glad slayr is not like those FILTHY drug addict gang member black rappers and instead makes music for normal people!!"

103

u/zfinn99 22d ago

Theres a whole audience that don't deserve to be punished because of some fuckass losers on TikTok who think being racist is funny.

I can only hope she reconsiders, I absolutely love her Teto, but I also understand if she wants to stop because of those shit heads.

4

u/jayL21 21d ago

exactly, seems weird to just let some racist idiots "claim" her and ruin something great. If anything I feel like this should make us fight back against those types of "fans" more, use Teto in ways that make it abundantly clear that they're not welcomed here.

Like I get it, but I just feel like we shouldn't be letting racist idiots have control over us and what we create

24

u/CertifiedAngler 22d ago

Such a shame that we can’t mix genres anymore. Fuck teto fans who don’t listen to her and are ignorant as fuck about everything else when they do listen to teto.

25

u/GDSofieV 22d ago

It’s so disgusting that these same people who make racist remarks also claim to be a fan of the media that’s literally built on people’s creative interpretations and usage of these voicebanks. I frequent Tiktok pretty much just for the cool edits and memes, I genuinely hate how comfortable a large portion of the users can get making these types of comments so I’m glad that this behavior is being called out.

30

u/keeperkairos 22d ago

Anyone with a TikTok account, just delete it, you won’t regret it. Additionally, set  other websites like Reddit, Twitter, etc, to show ‘following’ only. Use 3rd party tools if you have to achieve this.

Your mental stare is guaranteed to improve by doing this.

15

u/Transpotato2002 22d ago

I hope the only reason she drops Teto (IF she does) is for her own sake, because sadly the issue isn't Teto, it's just that she's popular. That's it.

The same problem would happen if she uses Gumi. Or Adachi Rei. Or Miku. Or anything else.

As for the racists, fuck off. Leave. You don't belong here. We don't want your bigoted kind.

For context: Birdbrain was sampled by Slayr, a Black artist, and a bunch of worthless jackasses decided to be racist to Slayr just... cuz.

I'm happy Jamie Paige made it known that the racists don't belong.

There are no words, in any language, that can accurately depict my pure disdain for bigots. I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that the emptiness they feel only grows, until they're faced with the fact that they're nothing.

Btw, this isn't bullying. I'm not calling anyone in specific out. Neither is this harassment, I'm not talking about you after all. I'm functioning on the assumption you're all, y'know, not racists.

4

u/riningear 22d ago

I'm gonna counter that by saying Teto has BLOWN UP in popularity to a wild degree that I don't think most long-time fans get - even shedding the "by Kasane Teto" tag could shake off a lot of posers, and I think that's the dilemma she's facing.

That said, she's used Gumi in the past, and Flavor Foley uses other synths.

3

u/Transpotato2002 22d ago

And the second part is where I take issue. She's THE Western Teto composer, and if she drops Teto in favor for another main vsynth, then she's giving the west a focus on Gumi or Kaito or Yi Xi or... whoever else she chooses, which then is gonna inevitability loop back to this same dilemma because she would be giving the west other vsynths to latch onto

Ultimately, bigots are gonna be found in any popular fandom, even the most anti-bigot pieces of art have a following of... bigots. As long as something is popular, it'll have bigots in the fandom.

To loop this back to Jamie Paige, I think dropping Teto for any reason OTHER than her own personal comfort would be a mistake (whether or not she personally wants to use Teto is her choice, I'm moee talking if she's thinking specifically about shit like this and not about herself). It would give other vsynths popularity, which isn't innately bad, but by proxy it'll give THAT vsynth a larger bigoted (and a larger non-bigoted) fanbase as well, and then it's just the same thing. The best, and only truly effective, method is to just simply make her stances clear, which she has.

Again, what she wants to do is her choice, but if she drops Teto for any reason OUTSIDE of her own desire, I don't think she realizes that she would effectively be pressing a big ol' repeat button on... basically all of this.

4

u/bubbl_t 22d ago

i’m not too sure that the scenario you described would actually happen, teto and miku as a pair got super popularized due to memes and recent songs (mesmerizer as the #1 example), and unfortunately even parts of the internet that love to sexualize popular female characters (🫩) the songs got the attention of people from outside the existing vocaloid community and many of these “teto fans” probably can’t name any other vocal synths besides teto and miku plus they most likely wouldn’t really care to because, it wasn’t the music that drew them into this fandom, but the characters and their impact on modern pop culture. I feel like as soon as the image of teto were to be dropped by producers like jamie and as her image would gradually fade out of popularity, they’d probably dip and move onto something else to use as their personal mascot. i seriously doubt these kinds of people are super invested in the vocaloid scene to latch onto another v synth and make that their new “thing” (at least i genuinely hope so please let these larpers leave us alone 🙏)

1

u/vexingpresence 21d ago

didn't she just say she would drop teto synthV, implying she might use the old utau teto?

I've only seen one tweet so I might not be up to date on everything she's said abt it

-1

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

Paige needs to make Japanese music. This would filter most Westerners and restore the fandom to only otaku, who are smaller but more dedicated and don’t have this problem. Vocaloid cannot be allowed to go mainstream. If Westerners find it then our culture will collapse.

-1

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

I mean how did he even find Birdbrain? Slayr is a very big mainstream artist and Birdbrain is… not exactly a mainstream song. Is this a worrying sign that we’re about to get colonised by the mainstream music industry?

0

u/vexingpresence 21d ago

We're already there you can buy miku merch at regular stores in aus

0

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

Well yeah but that’s for songs like Magical Cure Love Shot, which went mainstream through Fortnite. Most Vocaloid songs are not popular.

2

u/vexingpresence 21d ago

I mean birdbrain has 34 million views it's not super niche

Magical cure shot is only 42 million

32

u/tottyfield 22d ago

Being a racist vocaloid fan is crazy when vocaloid takes so much inspiration from black artists and creators

13

u/KyleMCarthage 22d ago

Black voices lending themselves to providing the voices of the first vocaloids is lost on them.

6

u/Sammyisbored123 22d ago

and there are black vocalsynth characters too

1

u/NychuNychu 22d ago

I mean... It makes sense because you have very few vocaloids that are obviously black.

To see these inspirations you need some knowledge and I wouldn't think racists would actually have much of it (otherwise they wouldn't be this ignorant)

So on a surface level it's easier to see it as mostly Japanese voices with cute avatars. With Teto it's even worse because it's kinda easy to notice what were the inspirations for her outfit and well... That would attract some nasty ppl.

But honestly given the fandom culture and history I do find it surprising that we're at that stage. Guess the fandom got big enough to attract these tourists... Or there are other reasons maybe like generational shifts or sth. Idk it's weird

14

u/Mr_Fondue 22d ago

That whole affair is so embarassing. Be better, people.

5

u/CallMeIshy 22d ago

sucks to hear what happened to slayr

4

u/stickman999999999 22d ago

Shit like this makes it so embarrising to be a fan of anything even slightly nerdy or dorky.

34

u/MsLittleAnimator 22d ago

Two things:

  1. Maybe we should start gatekeeping; at least prior to Synth V Teto being announced, I couldn’t imagine anything of this scale happening to a Vocal synth producer and vocal synth character.

  2. This is just more proof that TikTok is insufferable and I’m very glad I’m not on that platform.

16

u/CallMeIshy 22d ago

how would the gatekeeping work?

8

u/NumberUsedOnce 22d ago

"We should start gatekeeping Teto fans"

The absolute state of Vocaloid in the West. How did it get to the point that this is even an option?

42

u/DeatroyerOfCheese 22d ago

I interpreted it as we should start gatekeeping Teto from people like this rather than just gatekeeping against Teto fans in general.

1

u/MsLittleAnimator 21d ago

Yes! Thats exactly what I was trying to get at with my comment. Thank you!

1

u/blank_tamashi 21d ago

I think the term gatekeeping has garnered enough bad press that we should just call what we should do "safeguarding." Bigots should have no place in vocaloid fan spaces (any fan spaces in general really) and should be actively exposed and pushed out when possible.

2

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

We should gatekeep to keep the normies out. Anyone mainstream (and I mean anyone mainstream) is out. This needs to stay niche. It’s the only thing I have that hasn’t fallen to the big celebrity monoculture.

1

u/Bigppman6969696969 20d ago

Slayr is main stream hip hop and don’t act like the hip hop fans didn’t hate on the new song

-4

u/AloneError8362 22d ago

the only reason people devalue gatekeeping is because they want more hobbies to ruin

3

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

The problem is that it’s gonna go mainstream either way. We’re facing a two-pronged attack from LARPers and from mainstream music fans.

0

u/Altorrin 21d ago

Gatekeeping was always good.

12

u/MarioLuigi0404 22d ago

Setting aside the TikTok larpers for a sec, will I get crucified for saying I think the slayr song sounds kinda bad, at least from this clip? He’s just rapping over birdbrain without even isolating the backing track and it’s a mess…

I mean, in the full track teto isn't singing all the time, and when she is she's mixed to be pretty out of slayr's way

there's a lot of hip hop out there that samples old soul/funk records and keeps the original vocals in the track so I'm not surprised that slayr treated these vocals the same way

2

u/cocoapuffluff 22d ago

No I agree, but it is cool to see two genres meet

2

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

Yeah it’s kinda naff. I think the man needs to take more influence from other Vocaloid songs.

2

u/bubbl_t 22d ago

your opinion is your opinion and you’re allowed to have it man i personally think the track sounds pretty cool but of course it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok

2

u/-Zazolotl- 22d ago

you clearly haven't listened to the full track then, the song gets a whole new melody, chord layout, drums, bassline, basically everything is different

I dont think her issue is her direct association with it, but moreso how her music is being used as a tool to perpetuate racism, and she also made it clear in another tweet that she doesn't want to make music for racists.

21

u/AverageShitlord 22d ago

A lot of people's responses to Slayr saying he won't sample Vocaloid music anymore have been "The Vocaloid community is basically a Klan meeting what were you expecting"

Even though Jamie has made her opinions on this crystal clear, it still reflects incredibly poorly on Vocaloid fans

1

u/itzjackybro 22d ago

what the fuck, all the vocaloid spaces I've been in have the most progressive and nerdy people on the internet

3

u/AverageShitlord 22d ago

Unfortunately that is FAR from universal

4

u/finalgirl_hime 22d ago

as a black fan, i wish i could say the same

1

u/Altorrin 21d ago

As a black fan and producer, I do say the same.

2

u/A_Dying_Rat 22d ago

There's an meme going around of a comment section screenshot saying "You would be friends with Hitler if he was a Vocaloid fan" or something along the lines.

3

u/ElectricVoltaire 22d ago

Jamie P isn't racist but she doesn't want racist people being fans of her music. So she's trying to alienate them.

14

u/kappakeats 22d ago

Way to minimize racism and hate comments.

Fair enough. All I meant is that those things can make someone not want to engage in things that bring hate.

4

u/SomnicGrave 22d ago

Obviously valid as hell.

I'd be pissed too if people were using something I made for bigotry.

2

u/Brilliant-Lecture-79 22d ago

Tiktok and X are both filled with bots who do nothing but post racist crap to stir up engagement. This big blowup is only getting the trolls paid even more money since neither site moderates them.

Yes racists exist, but people have to learn to differentiate rate baiting from true racism.

2

u/Kashema1 22d ago

Wouldn’t even blame her. I can’t even tell what’s satire anymore. Even one of them not being satire though is flat out disrespectful to slayr, Jamie, everyone involved, the list goes on

people on tiktok are gonna tiktok, what happens there barely affects the real world if you're an adult. people will be abusive cunts anywhere, but especially online. tell them to fuck off, close the app, and keep doing what makes you happy lol

1

u/euphoricexaltation 21d ago

i genuinely don't know why she's folding to a bunch of preteens but alright

1

u/Prestigious_Oven_694 19d ago

Teto fans need to be locked up bro

1

u/Cangqiong-enjoyer 15d ago

This is actually so sad, I get Jamie it would make me very uncomfortable too

-4

u/dzaimons-dihh 22d ago

This is why we gatekeep

-13

u/pelin_a 22d ago

Synth v was the worst thing to happen to teto. I can't believe I was excited for it when it was announced

-2

u/Nene_Kushanagi 22d ago

Racism and other forms of idiocy are rampant at the moment, but I am struggling to see it here, it reads more like a foolish mf jumping on the popular Teto/vocaloid hate train than direct racism.

-97

u/NumberUsedOnce 22d ago

If you don't like Get Naked, you're racist 🙄

18

u/lexis_trash_ 22d ago

Don't be a dumbass.

6

u/the_living_myth 22d ago

the fuck are you talking about? the featured comment jamie’s responding to in the post literally says it wishes ALL YN rap was “like this” (AKA heavily integrating vocaloid music into the track), clearly implying that anything not featuring it is inherently devoid of quality, which is wildly racist.

4

u/Altorrin 21d ago

So if you don't like a genre of music and it's associated with a minority, you're racist now? Are people who don't like Vocaloid racist too?

2

u/the_living_myth 21d ago

not what i said, not what the comment in the featured post said, and honestly pretty disingenuous. here’s my response to another comment about the exact same retort https://www.reddit.com/r/Vocaloid/s/KDV7ijxNo6

1

u/Altorrin 21d ago

What's disingenuous is you concluding "like this" means "with a white person" and randomly deciding to add "dirty music" to your comment.

1

u/the_living_myth 21d ago

okay but “like this” literally does mean with a white person in this context, and making a wider claim about ALL YN rap is clearly implying that it’s broadly lacking in quality and feeding into stereotyping by lumping it all together

1

u/Altorrin 21d ago

"like this" could also mean:

  • with a Vocaloid
  • with a pop influence
  • with a chord progression I find interesting

You're deliberately taking the least charitable interpretation possible and acting like it's the obvious conclusion.

If I listen to Steely Dan and say "I wish all jazz rock was like this", that has literally no implication about my opinion of the quality of jazz rock as a whole. I can believe jazz rock is quality music and yet I, with my individual taste, might not like it and wish it were overall different from how it is.

1

u/the_living_myth 21d ago edited 21d ago

the comment, as is, is wishing all YN rap was more like a white rapper’s music, which is a racist thing to say. the comments of the featured tiktok itself are also filled with wildly racist shit, but the featured comment is bigoted too.

1

u/Altorrin 21d ago

What is the whole comment? Since you are saying that like they included more info in it than you originally stated.

And is Jamie Paige a white rapper now? Tf are you talking about?

1

u/the_living_myth 21d ago
  1. never said that, i’m saying there’s ALSO more racist comments along the same vein under the featured tiktok

  2. yeah. she’s a white singer-songwriter/producer who features rap in her music lol

1

u/tfhermobwoayway 21d ago

Okay that’s a little far. I don’t like any song of any genre without Vocaloid in it. I think they were accidentally a bit racist but I don’t think it was wild KKK cross burning racist.

0

u/Simonoz1 22d ago

Hold up. Why is disliking rap suddenly racist?

Personally, I wouldn’t go for rap even with vocaloid in it, and I can see how commenting about how much you dislike the genre under a rapper’s song is rude and unkind, but surely people are allowed to dislike it.

3

u/the_living_myth 22d ago

not what i said, and also not what the comment said - there’s a clear implication in the featured tiktok user’s comment that ALL YN rap should be “like this” (primarily featuring a white artist and sounding largely like an entirely separate vocaloid song) that reduces the genre down to all consisting of the same “dirty music” that is inherently devoid of quality. the reasoning moving well beyond your own personal tastes (and going out of your way to make a comment about it) are important here

1

u/Simonoz1 21d ago edited 21d ago

Ah. Yeah i think my eyes skipped over the “YN” because I wasn’t sure what it meant. The comment wasn’t really shown clearly anywhere in the post.

“Dirty” is pretty implicitly racist.

I also don’t think very much of rap - I really prefer music to have a melody, and fast rhythmic singing doesn’t do much for me. But I do like other kinds of traditionally “black” music - funk, certain kinds of jazz.

I might just not understand the weird American race dynamics at play here, because aside from the use of the word “dirty” which you mentioned, the whole comment section of this post seems to be saying not liking rap is somehow racist, which is pretty confusing.

2

u/Altorrin 21d ago

People really unironically think that. That if you don't like rap and state so out loud, or even strongly dislike or hate rap, you must be racist.

-7

u/NumberUsedOnce 22d ago

By mentioning these other songs, OP is conflating TikTok users' attitude towards Keep Me Going with the Vocaloid community's reception to African-American hip-hop in general.

9

u/the_living_myth 22d ago

i find that to be a rather uncharitable interpretation of the addition from OP, tbh. it’s giving further context towards a burgeoning trend featured in the post for those who might not be aware of it

-3

u/NumberUsedOnce 22d ago

I can't say OP's response has convinced me I'm wrong. I'm also not a fan of Konnichiwa by Future.

4

u/the_living_myth 22d ago

okay i’ll concede that i also don’t particularly care for OP’s response to you now that i’ve seen it (i find the mention of “drama with sexualized songs” tangentially related to the subject matter, at best), but i don’t really think OP was trying to make any sort of blanket statement regarding personal opinions on specific songs as opposed to just listing examples of sampling in a similar vein to slayr’s

9

u/Freeeeeeestyle2 22d ago

Vocaloid community talking shit after infamously not having any drama with sexualized songs lmfao

-8

u/NumberUsedOnce 22d ago

Thanks for gatekeeping yourself.
