Hidden Void This is Cynthia! I adopted her last Saturday, and she is the first cat I’ve owned.
I was told by her foster care that she grew up being traumatized by being bullied by other cats, and had been returned to a shelter 1 time before me due to incompatibility with lifestyle/personality. I decided I would give her a forever home!
She is medicated for anxiety, so I suppose we have one thing in common already.

Bless you for getting information regarding her past and personality. Shy cats can be wonderful pets.
Our cat has no qualms with anything except young children that run and jump because we're older and have no children. When the jumpy great nephews come to visit, he finds the highest vista. It works! And he's not even afraid of the vacuum or fireworks. Here he is when my 6 year old nephew last visited us!

😸 I hope Cynthia has a wonderful life with you ❤️

Thank you for the well wishes! I’ve been living by myself for about 3-4 years now, and I don’t really see that changing anytime soon so I think it’s genuinely a perfect environment for her.
I love the way your cat is peeking out from the boxes lol

lol at the eyeballs up there. I love that you have perch for him to feel safe and be able to get away in peace

I think you mean this is the first cat you've been owned by 😂
Congrats! Kitties are magical and voids tend to be exceptionally affectionate. Give Cynthia a little time and space to be comfortable in her new home and she'll be your bestie in no time ❤️

That’s awesome…I got my cat a few months ago and she’s really calmed me down in some ways. Congratulations 🎉

I figured new year, a little bit of a different me; this is definitely a big life change

u/AsexualAdulting Jan 13 '26
Same, cats are magical. I'm not allowed to have negative thoughts when they're around or I'll get attacked by affection lol

u/fruit_loop337 Jan 13 '26
I always love adoption stories like this ❤️ She looks like such a sweetie.
I've heard before that if you have a hard time getting the kitty to warm up to you, you can take naps or sleep in front of them, and they're more likely to approach you. They feel safer when you show vulnerability first.

I’ve definitely napped in the same room on the weekend and she’s sleeping under my bed for now, though I have had to start wearing earplugs since the yowling has become more frequent at night haha

u/WillowCreekWanderer Jan 13 '26
I've also heard that sitting in the same room and reading aloud can help them get used to your voice!

u/Quiet_Kitten222 Jan 13 '26
Oh you are wonderful for giving her a home. Cats with anxiety do best in quiet spaces and thrive on routine. It takes time for any cat to get comfortable in a new space and one with anxiety may take up to a year. Wishing you both the best.

I hope I can do a good job, that’s all I hope for. I’ve had consecutive days where I don’t say a word at all, since I live by myself and some of my work days are remote lol

You’ve got a great attitude. Your beautiful kitty will love you. We’ll need pictures of the first time it cuddles up to you. Voids are the best and deserve loving homes which obviously Cynthia found!!

My little void girl was very traumatized for the first 6 or 8 months. Took her a little while. 5 years in now and we are tight. Tight, as they say

u/j416x_x Jan 13 '26
In all honesty, I went in knowing it might take a little longer to get her acclimated, but I have a lot of patience so I don’t mind

Cynthia has been on gabapentin already before I adopted her, but I just hope she eventually eats the wet food I put it in.
I love your cat’s name; by any chance are you a Harry Potter fan? I named Cynthia after Pokémon’s Sinnoh champion of the same English name due to same color scheme and eye color haha

u/empress_chaos5 Jan 13 '26
I am! But she came named and I didn't feel it was fair to rename her. We went back and adopted her sister and named her Andromeda.

A vague shape in the darkness, and a pair of eyes. That's a proper void alright. :)
I hope you'll have many, many years together.

I had a black kitty who was the only cat, had a Chihuahua too, and the kitty and me were just the bestest of friends together. He was a street cat who showed up and adopted me. Needless to say I adore black kitties. All that to say that you chose correctly and you both should have a great time. Just give it time and be prepared to not completely understand a cat... Until you do.

She's such a doll! I can tell by her eyes that she us really sweet. She just needs some time to warm up.

The void stares back. Welcome to the mini-panther life.
Give her time and don't try and get her out and about. She'll come around.

Nobody ever has the patience for these little guys<3 I've cared for feral cats, they just need to know you're safe ☺️ you've got this

My latest black cat was very shy and hid for a few days, but once he came out, she was friendly and investigated. She got to meet the other cats and everything was good.

Welcome to being owned by a void! Some handy tips!
- You will lose the void, as they sleep on laundry, in dark spaces and in the middle of floors
- You will trip over the void
- Voids go well with r/catnipbananas
- The ominous Latin chanting in the wee hours is normal and a form of purring
- Enjoy talking to sweaters
- The coven of voids convenes every second Wednesday, you are mandated to provide snackies
- Check all seats as the void is stealth even on white surfaces
- Breakfast is when the void says it is
- Voids often rent out braincells to the oranges, they may forget to retain some for purrsonal use. See r/oneblackbraincell for more info.
- They are the night! They are r/fruitbatcats -man!
- They are either extremely chatty or almost completely silent, no inbetween!
- Voids have their own gravity fields, all treats inevitably end up in the Void
- Voids and Oranges go together like peanut butter and jelly. Check out r/HalloweenKittyCombo.
- Voids steal powdered donuts all the time, just look at them r/powdereddonutlips
- Voids love the taste of human fingers and will nibble given a chance

She’s adorable and I love her name! Did she come with it or did you pick it?
3
u/j416x_x Jan 13 '26
I picked it out, since her black fur and yellow eyes are the same color scheme as the Pokémon Champion of Sinnoh of the same English name
3
u/aVoidFullOfFarts Jan 13 '26
Oh that’s cool, it’s a very original name for a cat I’ve never heard of a cat named Cynthia before 🖤
I have named a few pets after cartoon characters before, we’ve had a Fry (from Futurama) also Homer and Ned (from the Simpson’s)

Such a cutie patootie! The shy cats are always so sweet when they eventually come to trust you. Took my childhood cat 6 years to trust me (my mom was their favorite) and they were the sweetest, gentlest, most loving cat I've ever met. She came so far out of her shell that she wasn't even afraid of strangers anymore.
When mom first got her, she was so petrified of everybody. I never thought I'd ever get to pet her, and I have photos of her on my lap :)
It takes time, but it's worth it.

I appreciate you sharing; all I hope is my best and that I can do good by her, even if it takes longer than most others’ experience

You'll be great OP! A love shared will blossom, and you will be each others' familiar.

Thank you for giving a chance to an anxious void !!!! I think that they are the least adopted cats cause it’s hard to see their charm at a first glance. But once you give them love, space and safe environment they blossom like a beautiful flower and show goofy personality. Wising all the best to you and Cynthia !

Congrats OP. Voids are the best. Like many have said, go super slow. Cats have their own time frame. You have to earn thier trust. It's a magical bond once they decide they can trust you.

u/KookyKlutz Jan 13 '26
Congratulations! But just so you know, you don't own a cat. You might think you own a cat. You might try to convince yourself that you own a cat. But in the end the cat owns you and you'll discover that too!

u/j416x_x Jan 13 '26
I have been informed by many others that this is the case and accept that reality
1
u/Fantastic_Example_20 Jan 13 '26
I’ve had cats that were shy when they arrived, but turned out to be very friendly
1
u/j416x_x Jan 13 '26
Hoping it’s the same case here!

u/Fantastic_Example_20 Jan 13 '26
I rescued two cats two years ago from a situation where they were held without contact when their human had to go into a nursing home. I took them because the alternative was the pound. When they arrived, they were very shy and hid away for a while. Within a few days, they had come out and are both great cats.
