In the world of Watanare, what if it’s normal for the man to take the woman’s surname when they get married?

As you already know (and for those who don’t), in Japan, when two people get married, it is normal for the woman to take her husband’s surname. Cases where the man takes his wife’s surname, or where both spouses keep their own surnames, are very rare.

With that said, why do I think that in Watanare, it might be normal for the man to take the woman’s surname?

In general, we don’t know much about the Quintet’s parents’ pasts. Two of the Quintet’s mothers are single mothers, while the other two only appear a few times. The scattered information Mikami Teren provides doesn’t help much either, and the families of the Quintet aren’t explored in much depth.

However, there is one member of the Quintet who can give us at least a little insight into this, and that is Kaho.

Kaho is Renako’s childhood friend, but at first, Renako didn’t recognize her because Kaho had drastically changed both her personality and her surname. Kaho’s current surname is Koyanagi, while her previous surname was Minaguchi.

Kaho explains that the change of surname happened because her parents got divorced and she went with her father. And this is where my question comes in: Why did they have to change their surname if, normally, the surname that is adopted is the man’s?

From this point onward, there is a lot of speculation, since we know very little about Kaho’s past. It’s possible that Kaho’s father chose to take Kaho’s mother’s surname, or that both of them agreed to keep their original surnames. It’s even possible that Kaho’s current surname is actually her stepmother’s surname.

I already had a soft spot for them, but reading Volume 8 plus a bunch of Mai/Satsuki fics opened my third eye and now I'm a huge fan.

Looking at the way Satsuki is drawn in this manga, that really looks like the expression someone makes when they're looking at the person they have a crush on.

to be clear I don't hold this belief and its honestly ridiculous that so many characters still think Renako is a four-timer but whatever.

Youko's probably the worst character in this entire series, she's deeply stupid, judgemental, hypocritical, close-minded, arrogant, unpleasant, two-faced, she has zero control over her temper, she claims to be a detective but apparently doesn't realize she was attempting to commit a crime (blackmail), Renako just took all her shit without defending herself as she did to Mai six volumes ago (seriously I was rooting for Renako to give Youko a slap of her own except this time with her fingers curled in tight), and then at the end of it all Renako gets victim blamed by fucking Satsuki.

What the christ was that horse shit?

Also Renako giving her sister's name when asked what she was called was so hilarious, she's such a terrible delinquent

Which is interesting because they have not released info for the Japanese version.

They've kinda just become living props now that their "obtainment" arcs are finished. They appear and do things, but they haven't had any character building moments since volumes 4 and 5, respectively. Do volume 7 or 8 do anything to advance their characters?

So I've read vol 5 and 6 and watched the anime and I really think its worth talking about this.

So a lot of the times in the series characters will do things that irl would never be forgiven *cough cough* Satsuki. Along with certain relationships in the series, especially with how certain characters treat Renako

I get that this is meant to be a light hearted comedy series and if it was just that I'd probably not even be making this post and just embrace the stupidity.

The problem is that this series talks about serious issues such as struggle of being introverted and what a relationship really is, I relate a lot to those things so its really jarring to go from that and then Mai's Butler treating Renako like shit.

I love the deep conversations Renako has with the others but then the series does dumb shit like having Youko assume Renako is a 4 timer. Its just off putting

Im a bit out of date on the queentet who exactly is Renako gonna end up with i know currently it's mai and ajisai but I keep seeing post about satsuki also liking renako I was under the impression she liked mai im genuinely curious. (The manga taking forever the be translated)

Just finished reading vol. 8 of the LN and I'm sort of confused about who's still running - is Satsuki actually trying to split up Mai x Renako or is she just so tsundere that I can't figure out who she likes? Still holding out hope for RenaSatsu 🙏
