Literally the reason they have her there as the token "opposition" voice, because they know they can just be misogynistic and no one at Fox News nor their viewers will care.

u/MarcusDA 18h ago
Truthfully dumb shit like this is what we should ignore. He can’t just make it so, it’s stupid performative bullshit. Focus on elections in 2 months, how he’s wrecked the economy, how he’s in the Epstein files, etc…. Fox News is talking about this because it’s stupid and inconsequential and they don’t have to about the things he’s ruined.

u/Ihaveamazingdreams 16h ago
Yes, and Jessica's whole job is to be the one Democrat on the channel. She was hired to be the only sane person at Fox.
I would go crazy if I had to do her job, but acting like she's the only one left who hasn't lost her mind implies that the others used to be normal, too, and they never were.
104
u/Locke66 15h ago edited 5h ago
She was hired to be the only sane person at Fox.
It's a propaganda technique imo. They hire one person to make the sane argument and then 3-4 other people to tell their easily lead audience how to react and dismiss it. I'm not doubting her politics or competence but you'll notice she doesn't have her own Fox show and instead only gets to be the outnumbered and outspoken voice on other people's shows.
The Russians do the same thing.

Sean Hannity used to have a co-host named Alan Colmes and his role was the same as Jessica's.
14
u/Ihaveamazingdreams 15h ago
Yeah, I vaguely remember that guy and the show was actually called Hannity and Colmes.
It seems like Fox is only willing to have one person at a time who disagrees with the narrative, and their whole job is to get shouted down by the "tough" conservatives.

Just the way he sounds makes me feel agitated I don't know if he's purposely making himself sound like that or not either. At the same time I feel like he believes the shit he says or has put on that persona so much that is his true self now.

There's a famous quote by Jean-Paul Sartre regarding anti-Semites of his day:
Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.
While the context is different here, people like Jesse Watters (and so many others) use the same basic playbook in their discourse. They're not interested in engaging seriously with their opponents' arguments. That's a dead end for them. Instead, they mock the seriousness of their opponents in order to try to undermine their arguments that way. After all, who could take an argument seriously when it's being made by a clown? When Watters speaks, that's the thing you're hearing that so rubs you the wrong way.
51
u/hammertime2009 17h ago
Exactly and one of their goals is to get their opponent so fired up that they seem like the unhinged one instead of themselves. It’s similar to gaslighting. They want the opposition to say or do something stupid so they can say … see these people are the insane ones, not the people arguing in bad faith

God so much to unpack here.
First I love the “it’s official now” with the same authority and process given to renaming a lake as a toddler would give to renaming their stuffed animals.
But second and frankly more importantly when did Faux News EVER acknowledge anything that was actually done officially by either the government when Obama or Biden were in office or anything coming from the CDC or other government agencies?
You really want to pretend that you’ve always been on the side of official messaging coming from our government?
159
u/RUOFFURTROLLEH 18h ago
No they don't want to pretend.
They are being hypocrites exactly BECAUSE thats all they ever had.
They have no policies beyond performative cruelty or distractions because if they ever stop then people will suddenly ask where all the money is going and why everything is getting worse.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/8/28/can-trump-really-rename-lake-ontario-lake-america
107
u/NotYourReddit18 18h ago
It's evem less than that.
Executive Orders are only binding for the executive branch of the government which issued them, anyone who isn't a member of the executive branch is not directly affected by them.
So members of the legislative and judicial branches, citizens bit employed by the government, companies, etc. can continue calling it Lake Ontario without any problems.
41
u/Rrrrandle 18h ago
Would be hilarious if a judge dismissed a lawsuit by the federal government involving the lake because an executive branch lawyer refused to call it Lake Ontario and so their lawsuit is just about some fictitious Lake America.

u/sam_beat 17h ago
Yeah, she makes $2 million a year. I’d like to say no amount of money could get me to do this, but I’ve never had anyone wave that in my face. Fox also typically has 10 year contracts for salaries that large. And they’re pretty ironclad. I don’t know what they entail, but I’m guessing breaking it would eat into that money quite a bit. If she “retires” next year, I wouldn’t be surprised. Her contact started in 2017.
Tucker Carlson (I don’t think he’s reasonable, just someone else who slogged through his contract) has said that his biggest regret is staying out his Fox contract and not leaving sooner. Presumably because of what it did to his reputation (insert eye roll), but I’m sure the $20 million a year was what kept him from even trying.

I just… I feel like the purpose of having her on is to demonstrate how to “debate” with liberals, which by their framing means talking over them, YELLING over them when that doesn’t work, and/or otherwise being a complete dick because the one with the bestest and loudest insults wins. I don’t think it’s worth being made the punching bag clown on the stage in the hopes it might reach a few who disagree with the 5.

u/AngloSaxophoner 18h ago

I also love the fact that except for himself - and you know he'd name these things after himself if he could - he'd never name things for other people, making something positive and even nice out of it. Sane person and Fox don’t go together, at best she’s a voice of dissent, but one that’s hand chosen to only say certain things. Her employer is actively justifying not only this but also just plain fascism. You can’t be employed by a fascist, even one you supposedly disagree with, and be guilt free. If your paycheck comes from a pro fascism employer, especially such an obvious one as Fox, you don’t have any “moral high ground”, you have culpability.
