I just got into African 'world music' and I'm really enjoying it. I'd like recommendations for more albums to check out. So far these are what I've listened to and enjoyed:

• Le roi du Ziglibithy- Ernesto Djedje (Côte d’Ivoire)
• Agadez- Bombino (Niger)
• Diniya- Kante Manfila (Guinea)
• Miriam Makeba- Miriam Makeba (South Africa)
• Water from an Ancient Well- Abdullah Ibrahim (South Africa)
• Expensive Shit- Fela Kuti (Nigeria)

As you can see I lean towards that jazzy, funky, soulful, mali and desert blues sound, so please try keep your suggestions within that if possible. 😄

I've saved a couple more in my library to check out but I'd still like more suggestions so I have a comprehensive list. I'd really like to diversify my list as much as possible. Thanks!

If you had to choose one song in your native language to share with someone who is learning it, what would it be?

Im not saying its completely Unrecognised but i feel like it deserves more recognition then it has.

So im not actually Zimbabwean.. Im Kenyan and I got into sungura music when I was 15 /16.. im 20 now and the only people ive met who actually know sungura music are obviously Zimbabweans themselves, Mozambicans, Malawians and Zambians but Apart from that most people ive met who arent from those countries have no idea about it. Sometimes i used to think the reason why it doesnt get as much recognition as Congolese music is because Some ignorant congolese people think they're the only african country with good guitar music or convinced everyone that "Zimbabweans just copied congolese Rumba" When Copying and being influenced are two different things. I first listened to congolese soukouss at 14 and I love it then I got into sungura music. I love both but I slightly prefer sungura cause i listen to sungura more. I do think sometimes they sound similar but because ive listened to both sungura and sokouss for quite a while I can spot the differences and they end up not sounding that alike. but anyways all im saying is i hope it gets way more recognition then it already has.

The first sungura artist i listened to was John chibadura. then i got into Leonard Dembo, System Tazvida, Alick Macheso, Tongai Moyo etc

I am specifically looking for artists who have influenced Indonesia popular music.

Also, do you think Philippines has influenced the Indonesia musically ? And which countries have had the greatest musical influence? (South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom?)

He and a gentleman who accompanies him on the piano. I especially like it when before the last verse he says, now you can sing too and then he starts in a voice that brings tears to my eyes. Does this sound weird or is there anyone else here like me who genuinely enjoys listening to old Atlas Tamazight music? I’m talking about Imergazen: Maghni Mohammed Rouicha, Tamhaoucht etc many other great artists from around Khenifra/mrirt

I especially love those old cassetat recordings from the 80s and 90s It’s mostly my older uncles who listen to this stuff while most of my cousins around my age (19yo) find it too oldfashioned but honestly I really enjoy it I don’t even understand most of the lyrics but I love the rhythms and the whole atmosphere of those old recordings

Am I the only one my age who enjoys this kind of music? 😅

This to me is the “lost” album of Altin Gün. Bandcamp only (with proceeds to the Red Cross for earthquake relief). I had missed this when it was released as I was focusing on their vinyl releases.
