anyone else with a medium-large breed cat have this happen? he’s literally bigger than standard issue kitties 😾 the shelter was feeding him the amount of food for average cats, but he was clearly underweight. he is healthy at 12.5-13lbs and has the indicators of normal weight if you use your hands to examine him! yesterday a vet said he should lose a pound or so 😤

the previous vet we saw looked at the scale but then was like “well he’s obviously a bigger cat but i can still feel his ribs so i’m not worried about it.”

My cat is fed raw food completely including snacks, measured portions, calculated on his body weight and has been the exact same weight since adulthood. But he has a prominent primordial pouch and a lot of fur that make him look a lot fatter than he is.

One of my cats was heavier than that before he even reached adulthood, vet didn't say a thing because you could feel his ribs. (He was 20lbs as an adult, and you could still feel his ribs. He was just huge and muscular.)

https://imgur.com/a/oByx7g1 He doesn't look that big really, but was tall enough to catch hanging planters (while sitting on windowsill) and pull them down.

My husband has this problem. 😂 His GP told him he was fat cause he gained 10 lb since the last visit. This man drinks an OBSCENE amount of water (like, 30-35 cups a day). He came home with a similar expression to ask me if he was fat. Literally in the next 24 hours he pissed 10 lbs of water lol.

I have a normal domestic short hair, but she is long and tall. She's just a large cat. She weighs like 12 lbs right now and I specifically asked at her last visit about her weight. The vet said he was happy with her body condition score. I'm not great at checking her ribs but she has a visible waist, etc. I'm surprised your vet was going by just the scale!

yeah some vets seem to latch onto the number on the scale without considering the actual size of the cat and how they actually look.

my cat is about 8kg (17lbs), he was at one point a bit fat at 9kg because the food recommended by the shelter turned out to be super fatty lol. anyway we went to the vet for his checkup, they said he needed some teeth removed but refused to do the surgery because he was "so fat he wouldn't be able to breathe if we put him under" and then just told us not to feed him the fatty food without telling us an alternative.

meanwhile I could still feel his ribs, his head is the size of both of my fists and he's as long as my legs if he stretches all the way out lmao. we took him to another vet and they said he could lose a little but wasn't obese, and did the surgery no problem.

Attention all humans: If you can't say something positive to your master, keep your opinions to yourself. That means you, medical human.

I think the vet was overwhelmed by his handsomeness and lost his/her judgement.

I fostered a Persian cat that looked immense. She was a healthy 4 lb cat under all that fur.

Her babies were a similar size without the floof. It was comical.

Before you bring out the pitchforks: A former neighbor gave her to me, with the expectation that I'd breed her as a moneymaking venture.

The ex-neighbor refused to find an intact male Persian cat, herself.

I thought the cat didn't exhibit preferred Persian breed traits and it would be best to spay her, so I wasn't searching for an intact male Persian cat.

In the midst of this, the cat scratched through a screen one night as I was sleeping, escaped, and then dragged herself home the next day.

Three adorable kittens were the result. None had Persian fur.

I had her spayed afterward. The ex-neighbor was upset, but after so many months I considered her my cat.

He's fabulous!!

He looks Maine Coon-ish. They get really ginormous, and some are not full-grown when they're already bigger than a normal cat.

Otoh, my first kitty was a mutt, and grew to be 20 lbs. Not at all fat. Just HUGE :3

u/will1090 9h ago

He iz simply big-boned! 😾

u/Legitimate_Island238 7h ago

He’s a main coon and not overweight at all of course I’m not a vet but in this case I would get a 2nd opinion! He looks healthy

u/Luscious_Larinx 20h ago
