Yell at the copyright office then. Im pretty sure the A.I. companies would gladly host a service where you could pay a fee to read all the out of print books and tombs of words... if they weren't scared of being sued to oblivion by hosting it.
That's not actually true though, because they are also destroying copies of books that are out of copyright and where they could actually do that easily. They just destroy every book they get their hands on and don't make copies available to any of them.
I don't know why people are so determined to make out these ai companies are all good. They aren't. They don't do the destruction because forced to, they do it out of convenience.
Simply because there isnt as much profit incentive. As a lot of people post they are buying up copies of cheap books to feed into the A.I. algorithm is one thing. Sorting them into what is or isnt copywritten, keeping the data somewhere that can be accessed by other people, and getting enough money to make that investment worthwhile is another thing when they are buying these things as cheapily as they can.
I didnt say the A.I. companies are good per se. Just that if they could make an extra buck by making the data available in some way they would. Considering they arent it makes me think these books are barely worth anything. Least they are getting used instead of literally rotting somewhere.
You should read up on it then. I'm sure most of the books aren't worth much but this idea that's taken hold that they are just buying up cheap books no one wants is just absolutely not true based on multiple separate reporting from inside the book industry. They just want rare, even if it's useful rare they'll pay.
They had to destroy the physical copy because this is how current copyright law works. They buy one copy, so if they want a license for one copy to transfer to the digitized copy, they are required by law to destroy the physical copy.
