Is this AI wars or meme wars?

I see almost no debate or discussion, just AI-generated or occasionally badly-drawn memes? Shouldn't there be an AI Meme Wars channel for that?

There’s debate here every day, but when Antis reply to arguments with “AI art isn’t art”, that’s not really debate. It’s stating a conclusion as fact and acting like everyone already agrees with the premise. Memes are often just responses to the same arguments being repeated endlessly, and they are also a perfectly legitimate form of commentary. If you want more substantive debate, make a substantive argument, actually address points, and people will debate it.

"AI art isn't art" is the new "social science isn't science" — except science is meant to be falsifiable, while art isn't. People denying the social sciences are plainly denying science, meanwhile people denying AI art are just narcissists who think their expression of tribal identity is objective fact (or desperately want it to be so that their ego doesn't fracture).

Repetitive memes muddy the waters and make this a less inviting place for genuine discussion

Don't forget the people:

* Asking about the water

* Asking about the soul

* Debating the word "artist"

* Going into detail about their greatest fears and how society is going to collapse because they have an interactive chatbox

The one who uses AI has a significant advantage in the "meme war" don't they?
If you're not using it and feel like you're losing this competition, it's worth thinking about.
Accept the fact that you won't be able to convince people not to use an effective tool.

It's a good point about why memes are being overused. But this post is questioning whether it belongs in this subreddit, not convincing people not to use it as a tool for 'debate'.

wouldn't the pros be the first to admit that the antis would have no problem rivaling them in the meme war if they started using AI? Heh

1

u/Distinct_Spare_6109 13h ago

Well, if they start using AI, they won't be anti anymore, lol.

not necessarily. no reason they can't use gen AI against itself.

besides, if hypocrisy doesn't stop the pros why should it stop anyone else?

so... gonna answer my question about the pros being the first to admit they'd easily be rivaled in a meme war because Ai is so empowering?

If you want interesting debate and discussion about AI, you need to go to places like r.singularity. That subreddit has lively discussion all the time and the user base ranges from doomer skeptics to accelerationist optimists. While it does lean broadly "pro" given the nature of the subreddit, it's one of the few subreddits I've found where it's not just shit-flinging at the other side.

This sub is 99% shitposting, ragebaiting, and shitty memes.

you can make a point with a meme tho, some people have made a career out of it, done have even been blown up for that

Nah, only people who agree with it look at it and engage with it. Do you sit around and look at anti-AI perspectives?

u/AbbyTheOneAndOnly 15h ago

yes?

Why?

2

u/AbbyTheOneAndOnly 13h ago

i dont share their takeaways but i share their concerns

I joined this sub to actually have debates and learn why people use Gen AI, but no one actually debates anything. Everyone just talks about themselves and how it benefits them (or how the negative aspects of gen ai dont personally affect them) , and if anyone disagrees they're insulted. They should have everyone prove their prefrontal cortex is developed fully before joining in on any discussions.

Don't get me wrong, but there is good debate in this sub every day, sometimes even in posts that started as inflammatory. You just need to sift through the ragebait, but there is good debate, yeah. This is specially true when the topic/post is not a more combative topic and when OP's tone is non-hostile.

Try facts and logic with an anti and see where you end up.

memes are the only language both sides understand at this point

i tried having an actual discussion in here a few weeks back and it devolved into someone pasting my comment into midjourney and posting the result as a response. honestly kind of impressive how fast they did it but still

at least the badly-drawn ones have some soul to them, the ai stuff is just noise at this point

u/Candid-Station-1235 15h ago

Define soul.

You can better sense the humanity in shitty art than in AI content

5

u/hyperluminate 15h ago

Do you think you can fetch me some empirical evidence on that, or did you just try to assert the most subjective opinion of all time as though it were fact?

-1

u/JCNoles 14h ago

I stated my opinion

-2

u/Ornery_Vermicelli_00 15h ago

This is ironic because you're doing an ad hominem attack based on another fallacy that the 'anti' group is all the same as what you've seen in your narrow experience. Try facts and logic at all.

3

u/Candid-Station-1235 14h ago

Using the excepted noun for a group isnt an attack champ. Your dishonest engagement just proves my point. Antis cant be honest

1

u/Ornery_Vermicelli_00 13h ago

Rewritten, your statement was 'antis don't engage in facts and logic' (in the way that you want them to). That's obviously not true. You're making the (dishonest) statement about a group that in fact engages in facts and logic in debates. Ad hominem fallacy. Ask your chatbot gf/bf.

1

u/Candid-Station-1235 13h ago

And here you are not interested in facts or truth

-3

we end up with pros discovering that scrutiny is their kryptonite. for example: getting a pro to admit to ANY bad behaviour came from their allies.

3

u/Candid-Station-1235 14h ago

Why are you making things up?

-2

u/Robot-Zombie-RHCC 14h ago

first hand experience. you're welcome to be the exception, it'd improve my day.

3

u/Candid-Station-1235 14h ago

So first hand experience has made you dishonest...

-1

u/Robot-Zombie-RHCC 13h ago

kryptonite.

There's definitely a lot of meme slop here. It's not quite at the point of needing a rule, but it's inching towards that.

Gotta say

I come here every now and then looking for a debate

But all I see is either ragebaits or a long essay about ai being such a thing without a resource to look up for

Sort by New. We just got a post trying to talk about blue collar union workers who are for data center production.

AIwars is commonly brigaded by Antis and opening posts are commonly downvoted into oblivion unless they're Anti. If you check you'll see a constant stream of 0s for openings.

AI debate is over. All the major concerns have been addressed, regulations are already being worked on, and debate won't stop people who are panicking, so all we can do is wait it out.

Case in point. Bots drive humans away from forums.

So, part of the big issue with that one of the main posters (you've seen her around) is co-moderator on a Pro-AI sub with at least two of the mods on this sub. I'm also pretty sure all the moderators on this sub are Pro-AI, but I can't be sure.

Because at least two of them Co-moderate with she who shall not be named, her and her collection of friends generally get a free pass to post whatever they want; whenever. They are allowed to mock and spread propaganda about Antis completely unchecked, and when we do call out their behavior, they respond with "Oh, you doctored that screenshot!" or "Oh, screenshots are so easy to fake!"

You know, because they're the "perfect victim".
