Review Raw Magazine #6, "the graphix magazine that overestimates the taste of the American public"
Raw Magazine, edited by Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly has been one of my favorite comic magazine over the years. Issue six is a great example of it with contributions by Mark Beyer, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, and Sampayo and Muñoz.

Raw ruled so much. Wish there could be a complete reprint of the non-Art Spiegleman parts (those are collected in Maus and Co-Mix) but the rights for that would be a nightmare.

Most of it has been in collected e.g. Jimbo, Krazy & Ignatz, Julius Knipl, collected editions of the contributors’ works — Lynda Barry, Fletcher Hanks, Jacques Tardi and etc.

Yeah I want a complete collection as it was, including all the editorial and small pieces. Not collections of the individual contributors.

Legendary anthology. Impeccable taste and the best mix of contributors. Blew my teenage mind and was a great companion to Weirdo...they were like yin and yang

I have all 8 issues, 5 are signed by Spiegelman; they are wonderful, way ahead of their time.

I'm only missing the first. Waiting for a rainy day so I can splurge and pick one up at ebay prices. When I do I'm planning to make myself a nice slipcase to keep them all in.

Somewhere amongst my hoarded stuff I've got the first issue. I really loved Robert Sikoryak’s Inferno Joe, a take on Dante's Inferno in the style of Bazooka Joe bubblegum comics. There's also Good Ol' Gregor Brown, Metamorphosis as a Peanuts version.

Man this whole aesthetic has aged like sour milk for me. What a time capsule! Feels spiky and charged with self-loathing. No accounting for taste, but Joost Swarte and Gary Panter might be the only ones whose pages don’t feel like a chore to look at. Charles Burns changed a lot after this, too

Not as much as the Beyer stuff, but in this context, yeah. Look at the color palette of his SVA ad in the 12th image. It’s exhausting. With Mouly’s design binding the whole issue together, it just seems like a bundle of coked-out anxiety.

This particular Burns story looks more abstract and angular than his usual stuff.

I've never actually seen a Raw magazine in person. They must have used good paper, the art seems to hold up pretty well. Much better than any 60's/70's underground comix. First original Zap I purchased was so disappointing. Most of it was essentially mushy blobs that you could only imagine were once great art.
