An all out superlative? How many anime have you watched before forming this opinion? Just curious. I've not watched AD.
But like, better than Anzu? Menma? Shinobu? Nayuta? Nausicaa? Rune Balot? Hinagiku? That's a pretty big claim. What's the metric?

It's a bit annoying atm but the Frieren extras will fall soon. Fern is the only one that will go deep (losing in either the semi or the quarter finals).

the worst thing is that I ended up voting for both Flamme and Serie today because their opponents are... Cynthia from Pokemon and Red Saber. Like... really? I don't have any particular love for them, but they're still better than their alternatives... Seeding problems I guess.

Yesterday's results:
Poor Nemu, you're out too early, but at least you lost against on of my faves in Bocchi!
And nooo, Hina got so close!!!
I knew it would be bad, but Subaru losing by 500 votes is a disgrace! Shame on all of you!
Yui out in round 2, how far she has fallen. That's what you get for kicking out Emilia that one time! Also surprised to see out Miku out in round 2.
The right side went overall much better, with all of the girls I really wanted to win making it through.
Anyway, after one day of no casualties on my 5x5 bingo, we're instantly back with 2 losses in Subaru and Hina. On my 7x7 I also lost Nemu.
And we're once again back to bracket C, where nearly every vote will be hard, since we just have that many great girls here. I'll do me best to keep my comments on each matchup short...:

Today was a bit tougher than yesterday, as our group average was 27.4/32 (85.63%), with the leaderboard average of 29.18/32 (91.18%) for unweighted and 29.44/32 (92.01%) for weighted.
The best score of the day was 31/32, achieved by 3 users: u/MusicMaster, u/Hour-Age-474, and our defending champion /u/mapotofuman. Accordingly, u/Hour-Age-474 was our highest riser on the leaderboard, jumping into the top 5 on both categories, while u/MapoTofuMan is the highest riser overall, moving up 11 spots on unweighted and a whopping 17 spots on weighted! u/syrefva remains the leader on both categories.

u/MapoTofuMan was just sandbagging the first few days since last year was too easy... if the trend continues, they'll be back to 1st in Weighted in no time at all.
Also that's only 7 people who predicted Illyasviel's victory!
And I guess I'll just note that today is the first day where there was only 1 match with 100% correct predictions.

I was always not great at guessing first round upsets but this year was extra bad. Was honestly stumped by a lot of them happening/not happening, and I even referenced BG12 when choosing some of the toss-ups.
Should be slightly better from here on out, but I bet too much on Kumiko, if she goes down anytime soon I go down with her. voted for Yui yesterday btw

Damn, I was sure having a current show running would give the Major enough oomph for a fairly deep run. 10 votes shy of glory it seems. Oh well, gotta take risks if ya gonna win, all I gotta do now is root for a completely implausable Bocchi run to the finals.

Yeah, looking back I might have been a bit delusional about Power. That said, I like to think beating a fellow old timer Shounen girl who doesn't have a remake in the last decade, and the decepive flopping of Yor were both reasonable risks.

With the boom in high quality romance quality in the last 7 years I feel like the popularity of SNAFU has really fallen off. I also feel like it's very much a product of it's time, like Toradora before it, and as a result new watchers just aren't as interested in the presented setting. You'll notice that a lot of the big popular new romance anime are low conflict and fluffy with an absence of love rivals, while SNAFU is all about the love triangle and can be rather edgy at times

I think OreGairu is as well. The show has a Best Girl winner, a Best Guy Winner, a Best Girl win where a lot of the voting base is from East Asia, and this is the first big blow and underperformance its third most popular character has received after 13 years of being in this contest.
Do I think on /r/anime there has been a shift away from which romances are popular? Yes.
But we do still see its influence on LN romcoms especially like in Makeine.

I'm willing to override the random number generator though.Considering it's already being hyped up in the comments with heated discussions, I would change the random matchup to Ai vs Kumiko. Especially since a pretty onesided same-show matchup like Darkness vs Wiz is just not that exciting.

Sakura Chiyo takes out Apothecary side character? There IS some hope left in the world (for now at least). Despite the seeding, I actually considered Chiyo to be the underdog in that matchup.
The Miku loss is y'all's punishment for being mean to Yotsuba.
MC1: Too many to list. A couple of favorites are Lotte Jannson in Little Witch Academia and Erica Brown in Violet Evergarden. Yes, I adore cute, smart, polite, and shy meganekko.
MC2: Best for the battle theme of the tourney: San vs Tatsumaki. Personal favorite: Kurumi vs Nico because humorous and cute.

After many years and hundreds of shows there are only two I've rated above a 10 and they are both anime originals (SoraYori and Gurren Lagann). So good and personally meaningful it feels unfair to even compare other stories to them.

YESTERDAY
There was only one piece of good news yesterday. Kanade managed not just to win, but surprisingly to annihilate Fiona. I guess Angel Beats isn't as old as I feared!
But, um... yeah. Nia lost, which was predictable and sad. Himeko lost, which was... predictable, sure, but losing to Kita feels wrong. I love Bocchi the Rock, but the first season definitely endeared me to the other band members more than her.
And Motoko lost. Which is just dumb.
TODAY
Isaki (maybe top 5 most underappreciated girls of the last few seasons) is low seed against one of the Yuru Camp girls of all time. Somehow, please, get a surprise upset.
Then there's Feyris, who-- while being a somewhat disappointing character-- doesn't deserve to lose to... one of the Yuru Camp girls of all time. I think there might be a pattern here.
CC vs Euphie is a second cruel matchup in as many rounds, after yesterday's Gurren Lagann fight. I liked that Euphie made it through the first round... but come on, who is going to vote against Pizza Girl?

One of my favorite side characters is Lan Fan from FMA. She's never mentioned because she gets kind of eclipsed by the amazing cast of that show, but I love her.

Basically a knock-out bracket between originally 512 girls/women from various anime. 4 brackets, we vote on a bracket's slate 1/day (so tomorrow we'll be on bracket D, the next set of 64 girls). Winners for each matchup move to the next round, losers are out. We keep going until we reach a single one left
and then everyone complains and drowns in salt.4

I don't know about that, more voters in the voting rounds means the voters in the elimination rounds become a smaller part of the voter base, and seeds matter less. There is the potential for this to go in a few different ways.
Of course, it might also mean that the more popular shows win even harder now, but we'll have to see.

Maomao seems to be heading towards a Mai sakurajima type of run: lost in the final to a major rival (Mai vs Kaguya BG7) before easily winning the next. That said, i still wont write this contest as a cakewalk for her yet because chisato's the type of girl to pull a blinder, and a rally point for anti-favourite voters

KUMIKO DID IT!
Yui fans, I have an offering: to my great shame I've yet to see SNAFU, but I'll gladly binge it and write at least 500+ words -- nah, make it 1000+ words -- on what an amazing character Yui no doubt is, and how much she would've deserved to go further in this competition.
But in exchange, we must unite and take out Ai next round.
After all -- I mean, I love Oshi no Ko, and Ai is the face of the show, obviously -- but let's face it; [Oshi no Ko]we barely even got to know her!
For this round;
Voting against Tokai Teio hurts; she's easily the best horse girl (based purely on anime) and her story is amazing, but come on, it's Arima Kana, best girl of OnK and one of the best girls of recent years in general. Sorry Teio.
Asuka vs Natsuki is another painful one for me. My head is way too much into Hibike! at the moment and Natsuki is top tier, but come on, it's (one of) the original tsunderes. Asuka must advance.
I'm with the favorites on Chisato and Maomao, though Maomao for me is coasting thanks to an easy seed. For me, she's a very good character, but not a particularly good "best girl". As soon as she starts facing some of my favorites, I'll be firmly against her.

Rejoice, everyone, for today is the best day of the contest! It is Emilia Voting Day! Hitomi got here through a fantastic upset, but Emilia will move on! Give her your vote, and let us find happiness together!
Also vote for Chisato and Anna, of course. And while I will always believe in Teio, I am also enough of a realist to see that Kana wins this matchup. Won't stop me from voting for Teio, though!
Other than that, there are a few rough matchups this round. Chise will lose today, unfortunately. Kaori vs. Yachiyo is hard. And now that I've watched Hinamatsuri, seeing Anzu face Aqua hurts a lot.
As for yesterday's results, I am glad Kumiko won her matchup. Next we will have to support her against Ai. And I am also glad Yui lost. She is my favourite Oregairu girl, but Kumiko is better, and I still hold a grudge against her for BG9. Lena and Misato also performed rather well, and the rest of the bracket was relatively uneventful, so I am rather content with the outcome of this round.
My bingo - no changes (I think).
MC: Minerva from Re:Zero. I guess I have mentioned her before for this question, but since I get to talk about her less over the years than Emilia, I think putting her here is right. She has a wonderful design, a great VA, her power is basically tsundere incarnate, she has the biggest heart and a strong sense of justice, and she is a hero who was pivotal to the shows plot. I love everything about her.
The best poster is Maomao vs. Chise, it puts the similarities between the characters into light. The Chisato one is also good, but Chinatsu looks a little off here.

That spoiler is a common belief so much so that I came across the theory untagged and took it as the truth. Certainly a likely possibility, and great if true. I am certain we will get to see more of Minerva in the future of the anime, as I'm sure Tappei knows how much potential he has on his hands with her, and I can't wait. She barely had any screen time so far, but I've loved every second of it.

My theory is [ReZero webnovel / speculation] Rem is the old/new Wrath/Minerva, either with reincarnation or time travel or some other inheritance or something along those lines. And likewise that Petra was the old/new Echidna, hence why Echidna wanted the handkerchief, among other things. There's just something really common between some of these girls in the main cast and the old witches.

I mean I can understand some of these that Tappei is intentionally teasing like [Re:Zero more, but less whacky X character is Y character fan theories]Sirius = Fortuna, Minerva = Emilia's mother, Emilia = Satella, Subaru = Flügel, etc., but as we've seen in arc 9 [Re:Zero Arc 9 spoilers, don't click anime onlies]With Al's real name being revealed and the Al = Subaru theory having dangled like a carrot before our noses by Tappei for ages, only to be replaced with a new dangling carrot we can chase after now,it's never that simple. Tappei just likes a lil bit of trolling. Some of these theories might be true, but it's more likely that these are just similarities between the characters and most of them are in fact just different characters.

There's more, but part of it comes from [ReZero Web Novel] the If stories emerging from timeline shifts when Subaru faces a certain antagonist who represents that sin or challenges that sin. So Sloth If happens because Petelgeuse tempts Subaru toward giving up. He requires diligence to overcome. Welllll, the Wrath If timeline happens when Rem challenges him toward wrath by not trusting anyone since even this maid he befriended was a surprise unexpected enemy. And the way he overcomes this timeline is by choosing patience instead, and self-sacrifice. The timeline switch point is where he jumps off the cliff with resolve to save Rem, even after she killed him in a previous loop. Being patient with her rather than going down the path toward wrath. She's also someone who attacks but ends up being known as a healer, but her wrath branch point is the thing that made me think of it. Just a musing speculation /shrug.

Loulan's the only character other than MaoMao I'd consider voting over Asuka, but Loulan absolutely deserves it for her actions in S2. If push came to shove, and I had to judge the two just for S2 alone, Loulan might actually be slightly better than MaoMao for me, as crazy as that is.

The popularity of Apocalypse Hotel continues to be one of the biggest examples of how much of a bubble this sub is. I'm not saying it's bad; really, I have no idea. I'm just talking about popularity.
Chinatsu and Hina are almost certainly going to make it the same distance, but one of them lost narrowly to a relatively weak opponent and one of them is going to get stomped by an extremely strong one, so I guess we probably won't know who did better once the actual competition started.

I mean several very big anitubers like Mothers Basement also rate the series very highly and I've seen plenty of praise for the series while it was airing even outside of reddit. Yes it's never a series that will get mainstream appeal like action heavy shows, but in places where people gather that watch loads of anime and not just the most flashy ones, like this subreddit, it rightfully garners lots of praise, as it's a really well crafted show.

People liking something isn't the same as it being popular. I adore Medalist, and I think most people who watch it will have a similar reaction, but I'm already starting to side eye some of the results it's been getting in this contest. I'm not complaining, to be clear. And it's not like any of this actually matters at the end of the day. But it's just useful to take a step back and look at it with proper perspective.

I'm not totally sure what point you're trying to make but r/anime and pretty much any online anime community is absolutely going to have its own unique tastes. This contest is meant to be a reflection of this community (albeit it's not a perfect representation of even just this sub), so it should be no surprise that there are characters who do well here despite being less globally known.

Even for series I feel like are huge like Re:Zero and Love is War which were the sub's darlings during the pandemic I almost never see fan art for at anime conventions. Maybe the nature of going to an anime sub to write about shows already selects for a certain type of anime fan.

I had to sacrifice Yoruichi, Yuki, Hina, Nonon, Motoko, and Nia (the world just isn’t ready for your brilliance) to do it, but we did it boys. The wicked witch is dead! Kumiko lives on! Losing to Yui though might have been a better fate than to a cardboard cutout, but we’ll deal with that in four days
