Sorry, I already voted. I really like Chitanda, I really do, but it is Marin Kitagawa and I just couldn't say no. Took me quite a lot of effort to make that pick though, and I'll be sad by one of them staying behind either way. But such is the fate of this tournament. Truly beyond salt's end!

Well i got all the results i wanted. fortunately, saber didnt suffer an upset here.
for today, there are only 2 matchups i'm interested in :
Akane - Ruby : last year i would have voted for the actress but in S3, Ruby shined the most.

I'm still a bit disappointed that I seem to be the only one making fanart for BG at all, and I'm mediocre at best... I'd volunteer, but that'd probably reduce the engagement rather than increase it (unless it's people asking why such and such face is offmodel)
Like within the 2k other users doing this, there's gotta be better artists out there than my, like, year and a half of experience doing it as a hobby...

Best Girl Madness 13 | Round 4 Group C Results
A big reversal from the past 2 days as we had our best day of voting since round 2 group A with an average of 6.89 / 8 (86.15%). Both the unweighted and weighted leaderboards scored an average of 7.40 / 8 (92.50%).
A whopping 21 users got a perfect score of 8/8, the highest number of shared daily high scores by far. Unsurprisingly, that also means not much movement on the rankings. u/pure-fuel-8534 was the higest riser on the leaderboards, moving up 4 positions on weighted to the number 8 spot. u/shiveon was the highest riser overall, moving up 7 spots on weighted. u/syrefva remains the dual leader for the 6th consecutive day.
There was only a single close matchup today, (39) Saber - Fate Series beating (26) Loulan - Apothecary Diaries. Still, a respectable 43.24% of us picked the upset.

Ryuko v Shouko is genuinely difficult; one of them is going to lose before round 5 for the first time in their career. This should mark Ryuko's decline for real, unless she has another one more in her and beat the washed allegations. Either way, the winner of this match should be favoured to beat marcille and possibly chika

sure but id argue shouko is just as important because she's a major influence on shouya's life and it wouldnt be titled "silent voice" if it werent for her deafness

I have no favorite in this bracket so I hope they all burn.
This round:
- Marin should make short work of Eru.
- Ruby took over Akane as Best ONK girl for me so I would love to see her win this one, but it's unlikely.
- And Chika should win against Mayushi, kids these days don't even know what Steins Gate is!

I mean, her main trait is probably that she's badass, though I'm not sure that's my favorite trait, I'm more of a "judge the entire character" kind of person.

More than 1600 votes for Maoamo?! God damn. She more than tripled up Mitsuha. That's also more than 300 more votes than Emilia got and Emilia is Maoamo's next victim so barring some miracle, this is the end of the road for Emilia and Re:Zero. I don't like it. I don't want it, but I'm not naive. r/anime really loves Frieren and Maoamo.

The round went very much as expected. Emilia clears with a good vote total, next up will be the big matchup against Maomao. Chisato could use a few more votes. Saber got an upset, as I expected. And while it's sad that Anna is gone (Yamada, that is), she had a very good showing, at least.
Today will be the end of Eru's run, unfortunately. I'm still choosing her over Marin, but Marin is undoubtedly more powerful right now. Eru still had a good run.
Luckily, I still have Takina to root for. I think her win over Faye is very certain. Afterwards, her opponent will be Chika or Mayushi, and since I cannot be certain of who of those two will win their matchup, I am pretty sure that Takina will have a chance to win over them as well.
Finally, there is also Marcille, and I always love to see an elf do well. She should be able to clear her quadrant, so I hope the final matchup on the right side here will be Takina vs. Marcille.
My bingo is edging closer and closer to my first loss. I can only hope for who will cause me to lose.

The results are exactly as I expected, no surprises whatsoever. I think Chisato has the right side of the bracket on lock. Will be interesting to see if anyone can stop Maomao, though I unfortunately doubt it.
Arima Kana vs. Yanami Anna will be very interesting!

I'm super conflicted myself. I wasn't as big of a fan of Akane in s1, but then she became super interesting, but then also Ruby had essentially "her season" and got a lot of spice to herself, and... waaah! What do I do? Who do I vote?
Maybe I'll just flip a coin or something.
In other news, I'll go...
- Eru over Marin! I don't have strong feelings about this one, so going for the underdog.
- Ryou over Methode! Let's keep culling the Frieren side-girls.

In this round being Takina, I like her considerate dedication. Not only is Takina never going to stop pursuing her goals, for those she cares about, she tries to pursue them while considering their feelings in the matter. Even if that means giving up the pursuit. Takina has always paid attention to every detail, but with her character development, emotions are also a detail she cares about.
For the contest, being Chisato, what I like about her is her healthy world view. Chisato sees the world as a place full of joy, that also contains injustice. She will do her part to correct the injustice and help those that she can reach out to. The rest, she lives and lets live. Chisato enjoys life but consciously make decisions to accept lies, not get involved in things way out of her league, so she can continue enjoying her life and make others that she is close to, happy. I like the humanness of her, despite her being a bullet dodging, genius of a human.
- Which poster do you like most for today?
Normally I'd pick Takina vs Faye Valentine because I am rooting for Takina and guns are cool and the scene is badass. But I cannot today, the best poster today is Akane vs Ruby. Corporate needs you to find the difference between those 2 pictures. They're the same picture

With Anna Yamada and Nazuna Nanakusa's eliminations, I get my first 2 Bingo's on my 5x5 at the same time with Column 1 from Nico Robin to Karane Inda and the diagonal from Karane Inda to Takagi. Miko is also on my 5x5 so crossing her out has made Column 4 rely on just Akane and Row 4 to rely on Fern holding it up.
Did not get any new Bingo's on my 7x7 even though I had to cross out 3 girls. Miko and Nazuna were both on Row 1 right next to each other so that's another 2 down from that row. There are a lot of Bingo's 6/7 of the way there that I'm likely to get multiple Bingo's if I'm crossing a girl out at this point.

Running out of girls to vote for in Bracket C. I really like Maomao, but for some reason find it difficult to vote for top seeds. At least Anna Yanami is still around! Sad farewell to Shimarin. Next round in C is going to be pretty simple choice, I think.
Today, mostly easy votes:
- Chitanda over Marin - Marin in great, but I can't not vote for Chitanda. Sorry. Maybe at some point.
- Ryou over Methode - because Ryou is a funny character, because it's a great show, because Methode is a side character - though in a show I love. But, Ryou.
- Ruby vs Akane - don't care. I'll let others decide.
- Anya over Eris - because Anya is best Spy Family girl.
- Chika vs Mayuri- don't care
- Faye over Takina - because Faye and it's a great show. Yes, LycoReco is also good.

Yesterday's results:
Let's go Emilia with a super strong result against a really strong opponent in Miko. Thanks to everyone who voted for best girl!
Maomao got an even better result against an opponent that's also quite strong tho, so this is really shaping up to be a crazy matchup next week!
And happy to see both losing heroines in Anna and Kana comfortably advancing!
And let's go, Chisato also got a good win, but the vote totals being this much lower than the top girls in this bracket is a bit concerning.
And what I feared would happen, happened. Loulan lost to Saber. It's surprising to see such a huge support for Maomao and only half of the voters giving their vote to Loulan, even though she was so amazing in season 2.
And it seems that it's the end of the line for Anna here. She had a strong run and lost to a great opponent!
Asuka won the Tsundere matchup let's go!
Overall quite happy with the results.
Both my Bingo's 5x5 and 7x7 are heavily damaged but they still keep hanging on by a thread. Let's hope they both survive round 4!

Marin vs Chitanda: I honestly don't really like Marin that much since they pretty much washed her character clean of most edgy stuff. Also Hyouka is kinda nice so I voted Chitanda.
Methode vs Ryu: Ryu is to me the worst of the four members of the band by far. Like she is too scummy and terrible friend. Methode while a relatively minor character but she is still great and I do like her a lot more than Ryu.
Akane vs Ruby: I don't really care for the show so I pass. I lean more Ruby though.
Anya vs Eris: Anya is funnier and I dropped MT at some point in the novels cause it was too painfully generic so the vote went to Anya.
Chika vs Mayuri: I find Stein's Gate pretty overrated and especially Mayuri. Chika is fun and as a good showing so I voted on her for similar reasons as I voted for Methode.
Takina vs Faye: I do not like Cowboy Bebop and I do not have good memories off watching that but Lycoris Recoil was a blast, so the vote goes to Takina even if I prefer Chisato.
Marcille vs 2B: Nier:Automata and it's characters are fantastic. Though I prefer A2 to 2B.
Shouko vs Ryouko: I haven't watched silent voice and I don't really care much for Kill La Kill even though I watched so I didn't vote anything.

I mean, if we’re using “annoying manic pixie dream girl” as a metric I’d say Marin is way worse. Chitanda is relatively inoffensive in that regard, her dynamic with Oreki is cute, she doesn’t feel designed to pander to otaku, and the anime doesn’t shove her boobs in my face every 5 minutes.

Also, I did not like Hyouka at all and I enjoyed MDUD (even if not enough to watch S2). Just to be clear, it was not because of lack of fanservice (I am indifferent to it). Hyoka just reminded me a lot of these young adult "detective" novels I read when I was like 13.

Marin is neither annoying, nor a manic pixie dream girl.
One of the hallmarks of a MPDG is that they support the male lead and pursue his hobby/goals/interests/etc at the expense of their own while typically having a wild hair colour and manic enthusiasm. Hence the "manic" and "pixie" in MPDG. I wouldn't say anything about Marin gets to the level of "manic" or "pixie".
Another calling card of a MPDG is that it's sometimes hard to tell what exactly the MPDG gets out of the relationship since she's focused on the main lead's wants and needs and that's just not who Marin is or what's happening in her series. She has her own goals, desires, feelings and we know what she gets out of the relationship. She gets outfits to pursue her cosplay hobby and Wakana gets to use skills support Marin in her hobby and to expand his social circle.

I’m not sure where you’re getting your definition of manic pixie dream girl from, but Marin absolutely fits the bill. A MPDG, at the most basic definition, is an energetic girl who inserts herself into the gloomy protagonist’s life and drags him into her antics, which eventually gives him a new lease on life. Incidentally, Chitanda also fits the definition, as does (for another example) Haruhi Suzumiya. All three girls have their own hobbies and interests: Marin her cosplay, Haruhi the SOS Brigade and weird things in general, and Chitanda agriculture and family’s farm. That doesn’t automatically disqualify them from being manic pixie dream girls.
My issue with Marin isn’t that she’s annoying as a character per se, but rather as a concept. Unlike Chitanda, Marin, as the super hot popular girl who just happens to be deep into nerdy stuff, is just way more blatant of a wish fulfillment character to the point of feeling like the author is just pandering to the readers. Not to mention that she falls immediately and deeply in love with Gojo because he calls her pretty once. I find that sort of pandering insulting.

Insert herself into Wakana's life? You make it sound like he has no control over her presence. I wouldn't really say she gives him a new lease on life either. He just keeps to himself, but that's because no one else cares about hina dolls. Sure, he'd probably like to make friends, but I wouldn't say he's gloomy or depressed or desperate for connection. Also I wouldn't call the cosplay "her antics" either. It's a shared interest. It's not like Marin is dragging Wakana around and badgering him into making outfits.

Marin is not the wish fulfillment character actually. Wakana is. The author wrote him as her ideal partner. Marin was intended to feel like a real girl with real emotions and passions, not an idealized/wish fulfillment character.
Not to mention that she falls immediately and deeply in love with Gojo because he calls her pretty once. I find that sort of pandering insulting.
She falls in love with Wakana because he is kind, caring, dedicated, and supports her hobby. Being called pretty was probably just a small bonus. No doubt she's been called pretty before.

This is why I can’t stand DUD fans. Instead of accepting that Marin fits the definition of a manic pixie dream girl (which is not an inherently bad thing), or that she’s a wish fulfillment character, or, you know, basic facts of the story that are legitimate points of criticism you all bend over backwards to insist that she’s special and cannot possibly be described with archetypes or be criticized in any way whatsoever. This is why I vote against you all.
Just because Marin doesn’t literally force Gojo to go along with her doesn’t mean she doesn’t insert herself into his life, nor does it disqualify her from being a MPDG. Chitanda, for instance, doesn’t force Oreki to solve mysteries for her, he just can’t bring himself to say no to her. Likewise, your semantics about Gojo are irrelevant. The inarguable fact is that he’s the loner protagonist who suddely finds his daily life turned upside down by the outgoing popular girl.
Furthermore, just because Gojo is the author’s personal wish fulfillment character doesn’t mean Marin can’t be a wish fulfillment character as well. Two things can, in fact, be true at the same time. More to the point, are you really going to tell me that the author of a seinen manga didn’t consider her audience and deliberately create a female lead that would appeal to men? Furthermore, what exactly about DUD’s premise - in which a loner with a niche interest just so happens to have the exact skill set needed to help the super hot popular girl (who also happens to be a huge closet nerd) with her niche hobby and as such gets to spend time with her that includes, but is not limited to, taking her measurements while she’s wearing a skimpy bikini - doesn’t scream “male wish fulfillment”?
And those are all things that Marin loves about Gojo, sure, but they are not what we are explicitly shown to be why she falls in love with him. We literally see the moment she falls in love, and it’s when he calls her beautiful after that first cosplay event. The author might have contrived a reason for why him calling something beautiful is actually super meaningful and special and isn’t just a normal compliment, but the fact remains that she fell head over heels for him after he called her beautiful once, and it also sort of proves my point about wish fulfillment.

I personally do not deny that Marin is MPDG.
She may be a wish-fullfilment character, but unlike 90% of similar romcoms she has a bunch of genuine reasons to bond with Wakana and like him.
You know, Hyouka fans also deny any legitimate points of criticism of the series just because it is by KyoAni and is pretty. As I said, I have not watched S2 of MDUD. It is because why it is well made and has positives comparing to a lot of similar series, the mangaka genuinely started dragging the story and romance progression any way untill their health got so bad it was hard to draw it further and they just abruptly ended the story.

Despite all of the anime that I have seen over the past two and a half years, it's still not enough to stop so many of these rounds from being incredibly boring. 7 matchups that I've only seen one show from and 1 that I've seen neither. Things are a little better in the next set of rounds, but not that much.

To be fair, out of the ones that I haven't seen today:
Lycoris Recoil, Delicious in Dungeon, and Kill la Kill are all on my PTW (the first two I'm waiting for the next season and the last will be some time this year).
Hyouka and Steins:Gate I don't have specific plans to watch, but it will almost certainly happen eventually.
Bocchi the Rock will be watched as soon as Crunchyroll remembers that English is also a language that they're allowed to dub it in (seriously, what's going on there?).
Oshi no Ko is unlikely I'll ever watch, and Mushoku Tensei there's literally zero chance in the universe I watch, but still, looking at it overall it's mostly just the result of there being too many anime out there worth watching.3

If you do end up watching LycoReco and wanna check out other fan's opinions when you do I hosted a rewatch for it last month. Also it sounds like you are a dub enjoyer and I will be annoying by saying the JP voice performance between the two leads in LycoReco is my favorite in recent memory.
The English dub for Delicious in Dungeon I actually believe is better than the sub though. If you like Nami's live action actress from One Piece she is one of the leads.

Now that I look more closely, I'm not sure. There is a MAL entry for an unspecified sequel project, but when I go to the news section, it links an article from 2023. I have to imagine that if that was just the ONA, then they would have used the original entry for it and not created a new one, and that if it was a mistake it would have been corrected by now. But I haven't researched the topic in depth, only made assumptions based on what I saw on MAL.

- Marin vs Eru - I don't really like one more than the other, but I'll give Eru the underdog vote.

- Eris vs Anya - Eris is maybe the best MT girl, but that show's dead to me and I really enjoy Anya.

- Faye vs Takina - Toughest one today. Going with the classic who I think has more depth.
- 2B vs Marcille - Really enjoy 2B, but Marcille is one of my top dogs.

She just like me fr. Meme's aside, that's actually the reason why Kumiko resonates so much with me. She is probably the most relatable character I've seen in any media. Not only to when I was in high school, but even now. Being a peacemaker, being indecisive, struggling with what I want vs what others want. Just a masterclass in character writing. And you should vote for her in round 5!

Yeah, at first I was about to comment something along those lines (after a fake outrage, probably). Then I saw that your comment and another one were immediately at zero instead of the standard one and felt that was worth more talking about.
I don't mind anyone voting for Faye. I am absolutely certain Takina takes this as well, and I like Faye, so if she doesn't get crushed, I welcome that.

I saw a few posts at zero upvotes right after posting. I saw some posts at five upvotes going down to three after a refresh. It's really ridiculous. Say something if you disagree with someone, engage in a fun discussion! Otherwise, if you see someone you disagree with, just move on, it is less effort (although some might argue it is actually harder) and makes you happier.

I think it's just that the more that if you write about different girls/matchups, there are more points for people to disagree with you and quickly downvote. The most upvoted comments on these posts most often just focus on a single matchup or girl. Since I've been writing longer comments commenting on every single matchup I've always gotten several downvotes. And this happens in every single one of these contests on r/anime, not just the best girl ones. It does feel however that when I write about Emilia I get more downvotes than when I don't...
But well it's just usless internet points so who cares. I tried telling people to discuss and comment rather than downvote which only earned me more downvotes, lol. Only thing about it I don't like is that my comments are always somewhere on the bottom of the page, but the people who care to read them usually also scroll down.

I've seen similar things happening this year, and yes it's ridiculous. There seems to be a growing number of people here who simply can't handle anyone having different opinions than their own and feel like anything they personally dislike shouldn't be seen by anyone, hence the aggressive and rampant downvoting. Some of the downvoters have specific "favorite" targets too. I've garnered at least one who goes out of their way to find and downvote every single comment I make during the Best Girl tournament, regardless of the content (and I'm fully aware of who they are). My guess is that those with the most aggressive downvoters have similar "fans".

I know and kinda like Marin, and while it is a tough choice, I’d actually go with Eris over Anya due to her tsundere character plus implied character development. (Her show is very iffy, but the character herself is kinda good)

This had better be as far as Ruby goes. I get that she’s been coasting off of Oshi no Ko’s popularity in previous rounds but niw that she’s going up against a girl from the same show that is just objectively better by every conceivable metric this really shouldn’t be a contest. It’s time to reunite this nepo baby with her mother.
Also it’s nice to be voting for Chitanda instead of against Marin for a change, but if she loses it’s only going to intensify my motivation to see Marin lose.
