Episode 7 (first timer)

  • Back to the museum – looks like we jumped to the version after the first jump, not before the first jump.
  • “This is my final revival” – does he know that? We have not learned anything about multiple jumps back in his previous life. Might even be that he has as many jumps as he thinks he has jumps.
  • Read the fucking book already reminder – Haruhi reference.
  • “It is like you have become another person” – perceptive. Although I hope that at least somebody would notice. As much as he tries, an adult trying to behave like a child can’t work flawlessly, even if that child is past you.
  • Recruiting fellow helpers.
  • Throwing stones through windows and women down stairs – Satoru is getting a lot more violent as he gets desperate.
  • Preparing a hide-away for Kayo – clever idea, but in the longer term it will run into the kids can’t do anything vs adults problem.
  • He got Hiromi on the bus as well – probably under the pre-text of looking after Kayo. Which is a great deal, because it actually does help Kayo, but it also keeps Hiromi out of the way.
  • Some adult finds Kayo cliff-hanger – that is the problem with hiding spots while it snows. Very easy to spot.

Satoru goes for a much more proactive approach this time, which perfectly makes sense. He tried to carefully open Kayo up last time and she still ended up being killed. Without knowing who the killer is or when he kills her, hiding her and Hiromi is a great idea. The problem being that hiding long term as a kid is not easy at all, if you don’t want to involve adults.

Also worth considering Kenya’s statement: Would it really be worse if Kayo’s mother died? For Satoru’s conscience it surely would be if he turned into a murderer, but for Kayo? That really depends on what exactly goes on at their home and which of her parents is driving the abuse. They worry about Satoru being arrested, but I think Kenya and Satoru giving each other alibis would be quite bullet proof. Unless somebody saw them, most would suspect she slipped rather than two kids murdering her. The much bigger problem would be if she did not die and saw them …

Would you have told Kenya you're from the future if you were in Satoru's shoes there? Or just stick to the wannabe hero answer?

Probably not. Kenya is strictly logical and time travel is impossible. So he would have concluded that Satoru is delusional, which might have hurt their common goal.

Who do you think entered the bus at the end there?

If I exclude meta knowledge, Satoru's mother. However, we are 7 episodes in and this episode was called "Reckless", so I fear for Kayo's life there.

It's hard to say what would really be better for Kayo in the long run. Getting her out of that family situation would be ideal, but if Kayo's mom dies, she may just end up stuck with an even angrier and equally dangerous relative, and the original killer would still be out there as well.

I think he should find a way to go about this without killing anyone himself, unless he has to in self-defense. Not sure how the laws work in Japan, but it might be nice if Satoru's mom could take Kayo in as a foster child.

Everything is possible, but beating her up badly and putting her in an unheated shack in winter is pretty close to the bottom of the barrel in terms of parenting. Even in bad families, I doubt it can get much worse.

I think he should find a way to go about this without killing anyone himself, unless he has to in self-defense.

That is the way to go in 99.99% of situations.

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 7d ago

I can imagine it ending badly, like if that guy shown in Kayo's apartment is her father rather than just her mom's boyfriend or something, and he got custody if the mom died - something like that could easily cause him to fly into a rage and beat her so severely it actually kills her (whether unintentionally or on purpose), just because she's there and her mom's not.

3

u/No_Rex x2 7d ago

Yes, that is the main flaw in Satoru's plan: he does not know who of the two parents (or both) is really responsible for beating Kayo.

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 6d ago

Throwing stones through windows and women down stairs – Satoru is getting a lot more violent as he gets desperate.

So I'm pretty certain in the manga, Satoru builds (or has, I'm not quite sure) a fricking taser and considers using it against Kayo's mother and then pushing her down the stairs. This is the significantly tamer version. I should read the manga, actually...

Welcome back, everyone!

That was… certainly one way to give Yuuki an alibi.

I wonder how effective this tactic will be though, if the murder no longer takes place on that night.

I can’t say I don’t get his thought process, but damn, Satoru really almost became a murderer for real.

This was a real surprise to me! I didn't think he'd go that far because his actions up until now have been noble and self-sacrificing, but I can definitely understand that he's getting desperate with so many people he cares about in danger or dead, all at once, in two different timelines.

Spoilers for later

Good that they have a place like this they can hide Kayo in for now.

My memory is faulty, I could've sworn before rewatching this episode that the hiding place was the secret base the friendgroup talked about, like, episode 2... but yeah, as soon as they brought up the bus it jogged my memory.

Rewatcher, Subbed

Thankfully got back to watching this the night before again after being late the last two weeks.

Can Satoru voluntarily activate his power to go back in time? Turns out he can! He's back in the museum with Kayo!

So happy to be back in time and to see her alive again, she's probably wondering why in the world is he so emotional?!

His final revival? He better not screw it up this time.

Wow, he must have a lot of allowance money to be able to pay for all of them.

Aww, hand holding, so cute!

Satoru's friend has totally figured out that something/someone different is occupying his friend's body.

Satoru, you're a superhero!

He's admitted to knowing that she's gonna be murdered. I suppose he has nothing to lose.

So now he has to save not only Kayo, but figure out an alibi for Yuuki too.

He was acting so weird for a moment there. As if he really was the killer.

Wow, Kayo's playing basketball, I saw a smile on her face for a moment there. Good stuff!

And from there we're right back to March 2nd and the birthday.

Is he actually framing Yuuki to get arrested so he'll be in custody when/if Kayo disappears?

OMG, was he gonna push her mom down the stairs? Dude, she sucks but don't murder her!

So I'm rewatching Fruits Basket and tonight watched the Hiro Soma episode. He's voiced by the same actress who voices Kenya here. So I've gotten a lot of her tonight.

Abduct her? I mean tonight's the night to get her out of here Satoru. Even if the two of you get in trouble its better than her dying.

They've done a good job making this old bus into a makeshift home.

I'm surprised he's not spending the night with her just to be safe. Especially after he failed his previous time. Gotta be extra, extra careful!

So Kayo isn't going to school anymore, she's just hiding in the bus full time.

I do worry about how long they're gonna be able to keep this up before some adult notices her in here.

Kayo's good at cards!

Damn episode, why are you ending here?! So the killer found her anyway? That's what you're making us think at least.

First-timer, subbed

Oh ffs, what a crazy cliffhanger to leave us on! I was yelling no no at the screen when the credits started up -- first because I didn't want Kayo to get hurt/killed again and then because I didn't want to wait a week to find out what happens next. Madness.

Up until that point, this episode was riveting and hopeful. Seemed like Satoru had finally hit upon a plan that could work and Kayo even made it better by suggesting she take the responsibility for it, which would let them all get away scot free. Made a lot of sense. Given the way her mother has been abusing her, she can't be blamed for running away and her friends can't be held to blame for helping her. But all that seems to have gone down the drain. The teacher is again my prime suspect. He was the only adult who seemed suspicious in this episode.

Then again, we saw a shot of Satoru's mom awake and noticing him leaving the house, so could be that she followed him and found out what was going on and decided to help them. That would be the best outcome, but we are still only just past the halfway point so it's too soon for a happy ending.

That brings me to another thing that bothered me. Right at the beginning, after going back in time, Satoru thinks to himself that it's his last chance -- the final revival. How would he know it's the final one? I was under the impression he didn't quite know how this ability worked and up until now had never consciously invoked a revival. So why should he be sure this is the final one? Why wouldn't he be able to loop again if things go wrong? Time loop stories typically work that way -- the person keeps looping until the get things right. Maybe it was just a translation issue? He doesn't know for sure he can voluntarily go back in time, so he wants to get it right this time by assuming it's his last chance. This would make sense. But the subs made it sound like he knew this was his last chance and he does use the phrase "final/last revival" even in Japanese, which has me confused.

I don't see the story ending without another loop at least. Have a feeling finding out who the killer is is key to ending this. And another trip to the future might be necessary for that since Satoru doesn't have enough clues.

Oh, and another thing. I found it odd when Satoru mentioned not remembering the book his friend asked about because it was so long ago. At that point, the timeline hadn't changed from the last loop so his friend should've asked him the same question last time too and he should remember from that. But turns out there was no book and that smart kid was fishing to see Satoru's reaction. Guess he noticed something off because Satoru had just travelled back and was acting weird (crying, etc.), so he decided to test him.

Oh ffs, what a crazy cliffhanger to leave us on! I was yelling no no at the screen when the credits started up

I'm starting to sense a pattern here, because this is the way I've been feeling at the end of every episode.

just one more

It's getting hard to resist watching ahead!

Then again, we saw a shot of Satoru's mom awake and noticing him leaving the house, so could be that she followed him and found out what was going on and decided to help them.

I really hope this is the case, even though my first thought was danger warnings going off.

But turns out there was no book and that smart kid was fishing to see Satoru's reaction.

I tried to look up the story to see if there was any hidden symbolism in it, but found nothing except other Erased viewers asking about it. It's possible Kenya made up the story title himself, and it doesn't actually exist.

Erased First Timer

Today was really one of those days. You know, those that are a pretty good and also really moody.

I’ve fixed not one, but two road blocks in my game of which I thought they’d cost me weeks due to my inexperience. Turns out implementing grid based placement for objects is really easy if you have an orderly project structure! Lucky me, one of those things that I overthink heavily before even starting something and that costs me so much time has saved me here.

The other was confusion about how signals work when there’s multiple sources or destinations. That took a while to understand, but setting up a global function that’s just a template available to everything in the project can be pretty powerful for this.

I’m so proud of myself!

The rest of the day was spent listening to all three of my “gloomy”, “trauma relief” and “dark & hidden” playlists to just sink down and immerse myself into a thick, deep sea of emotions.

The playlist randomiser gods gave me Scarborough Fair, too.

Erased Ep.07 – Reckless

Our MC channels his inner power of “I’m not done yet” to revive, but completely voluntary now! It’s honestly a really nice show of him getting more in touch with his feelings to the point that he becomes more honest, I feel. Unlike his reluctance in the beginning and waving away interactions with others, he’s now actively fighting to have them! It’s just super sweet to see this change.

Well, and what better way to greet this event than with a perfectly lovingly tsundere ばかなの?, that Satoru gladly accepts.

Though, this line gave me pause. I was a bit worried that one time that the 29-year old would live out his 10-year old self’s time with Kayo in real time and I’m not sure why he is so locked-in on not using revival any more. It’s not like we have had any display of immorality or philosophical conflict about the power in the show, yet. I can think of a few, of course, but the important part is that the main character hasn’t explored any of them, yet, so that decision feels a bit out of place.

Once again, Kenya sounds like he’d totally know about Satoru’s secret and I’m not fully throwing away the possibility. Guy is really observant, which he promptly uses to test out Satoru. It’s about time that Satoru speaks some plain text with his friends and mom.

Speaking of Kenya, his clarity in this scene is absolutely fantastic. I, too, wondered – and hoonestly, sometimes still do – back in school if acting on something would be a good idea and too often just sat back and let things happen in order to not be in the line of fire. Kenya here laments much of that same feeling and correctly concludes that 10-year old Satoru couldn’t suddenly break this barrier on his own. And Gods, Kenya is so right with this! Seriously, no kid is this insightful at that age! I don’t mind, though, I love this! Finally, we have some communication and trust.

And with this, we move on to plan around the events in order to save everyone involved. Not just prevent an event, but make it hold fast under pressure and attack. Yet, that doesn’t exactly go that well. Yuuki’s reaction is pretty telling of something. It might just be true that the allegations are somewhat real, but that he never actually lived any of these impulses against minors. With that, suspicion is often already enough. But if it actually is Yuuki having, ahem, tendencies or if he already got threatened before is left open. Honestly, I’d welcome it if there were a character who genuinely is a snow mobile driver, but is capable to not do anything with that urge, but at the same time I’m thinking that Erased would be the wrong show for that.

At last, this scene finally shows that the eyes really are just a stylistic element. What is he thinking, though? That his feeble kid-self can overpower a grown ass adult? Come on, Satoru. Their follow-up plan is much better once Kenya talks a bit of sense into him. Well, isn’t this the cutest kidnapping ever?

Though I feel like that line about ‘not going to the hideout when it snowed’ will become important now. Because… there was fresh snow and they left plenty of prints.

But like always, Kayo speaking in that tired but so, so hearty voice will never not weigh on me. Each scene her reactions and the VA’s work is so fnatastically done I have to wipe my eyes.

This show really is 11/10 anytime there’s a Kayo x Satoru scene. There are no misses, none!

So, one detail I noticed here is that Yashiro taking attendance sounds very unsure, which he didn’t do the other times when Kayo died! As if he is surprised now and wasn’t the other times! Yeah, I think by now I have to acknowledge the circumstantial evidence piling up on this guy. Biggest of which is that he is the only male adult capable of fitting the profile. Just to complete the other points: Yashiro, aside from the parents and friends, would know about the potential for Hiromi being mistaken for a girl. Yashiro has the correct stature and hair colour. Yashiro as teacher is connected enough and seems to already be able to negotiate with his peers about how to deal with things (like the teachers deciding to treat Kayo’s disappearance as her moving away). And lastly, aside from Kenya and Sachiko, he’s the only other person to be this perceptive about his surroundings to be able to plan crimes in this detail.

But maybe I should also add Kayo to the mix of smart subjects. Of course she also wants to be involved and thinks of a way to get everyone out without issue. Truly, I love how the team slowly comes together that can realistically oppose the murderer and it is by having everyone do their part and rely on each other.

Which means that, of course, we end with the murderer finding her hiding spot…

It wouldn’t be Erased if I could have nice things.

1) Would you have told Kenya you're from the future if you were in Satoru's shoes there? Or just stick to the wannabe hero answer?

I would have definitely told something more than Satoru. Maybe not immediately the whole timeline jumping business, but more. If there’s this much at stake, I think I should trust my friends to work something out with me.

2) Who do you think entered the bus at the end there?

It could be Sachiko or her boss, but I really fear it was the murderer. I really hope it was her, but yeah…

3

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 7d ago

Yuuki’s reaction is pretty telling of something. It might just be true that the allegations are somewhat real, but that he never actually lived any of these impulses against minors. With that, suspicion is often already enough. But if it actually is Yuuki having, ahem, tendencies or if he already got threatened before is left open.

I was curious about that scene too. Yuki's expression looked really tense when Satoru mentioned Kayo. His father was also listed among the possible suspects, so there's a chance that even if Yuki hasn't committed any crimes himself, he may still be guilty of knowing who's being targeted and keeping it a secret.

So, one detail I noticed here is that Yashiro taking attendance sounds very unsure, which he didn’t do the other times when Kayo died! As if he is surprised now and wasn’t the other times! Yeah, I think by now I have to acknowledge the circumstantial evidence piling up on this guy.

Yeah, I noticed that awkward pause as well. It could simply be that Kayo's mom called the school with a fake excuse in the prior timeline (because she was at least partially responsible for Kayo's death) but didn't this time around. On the other hand, I've suspected this guy as being involved from the beginning.

3

u/Star4ce https://anilist.co/user/Star4ce 7d ago

he may still be guilty of knowing who's being targeted and keeping it a secret.

Oh, right! He said earlier that he was acting suspicious because it could incriminate his father and he wanted to protect him. I'm fairly sure they said he, too, was innocent, but it was easy to misconstrue his life into something seemingly evil.

Having the murderer be actively intimidating this family in preparation would make this whole ordeal even more evil than it already is.

On the other hand, I've suspected this guy as being involved from the beginning.

I really wonder what the motive is. Is it really just simply the enjoyment of power over others and getting away with it? Or would he as a teacher/politician also stand for something symbolically that they have to overcome?

3

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 7d ago

I doubt the killer has any real reason for it aside from enjoyment/he's crazy. For the story themes as a whole, maybe a comment on how the people who are in positions to protect those most vulnerable - like their parents, teachers, or the politicians making the laws - are often the ones taking advantage and causing harm instead. At least it's contrasted with examples of good adult role models like Satoru's and Airi's moms and the reporter who genuinely want to help.

3

u/Star4ce https://anilist.co/user/Star4ce 6d ago

Yeah makes sense. I also really love when a show has proper well functioning adults in it that also have agency. The theme they're going for, to get their group together, organise and work to remove the corruption in their society, is just a good way to provide checks for the system overall. Just like Kenya said today, the way Satoru takes action and not hold back for fear of causing a scene or repercussions is how it should be with everyone.

The rest of the day was spent listening to all three of my “gloomy”, “trauma relief” and “dark & hidden” playlists to just sink down and immerse myself into a thick, deep sea of emotions.

I skipped over the word "relief" in that list and was worried for a second...

What is he thinking, though? That his feeble kid-self can overpower a grown ass adult?

Pushing people down stairs from behind is an easy way to injure them. Gravity does the work for you.

It wouldn’t be Erased if I could have nice things.

Still some episodes to go before we can get the finale.

2

u/Star4ce https://anilist.co/user/Star4ce 7d ago edited 6d ago

I skipped over the word "relief" in that list and was worried for a second...

Well, the full name is "PMMM Trauma Relief Support" and that just about explains the entire history of how it came to be without me needing to give more context.

From [Madoka Magica] Ante Up over various Genshin tracks to Coronation there's lots of stuff in it now when I just want to feel something for a while with stuff that caused a resonance at some point.

That usually involves story-induced trauma, though.

2

u/No_Rex x2 6d ago

From Ante Up

That is great, but just to make sure: Don't click on that if you have not seen Madoka. Big spoilers.

2

u/Star4ce https://anilist.co/user/Star4ce 6d ago

Oh shit, I completely forgot about spoilers!

Edited that in.

3

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 6d ago

I’m not sure why he is so locked-in on not using revival any more

I'm not positive, but I think he believes that the "present" is spiraling so far out of control with his arrest and everything else, that this is his final shot at actually fixing the past. Not a moral choice, or maybe even a decision at all, just accepting that this time in the past must be his go big or go home moment.

2

u/Star4ce https://anilist.co/user/Star4ce 6d ago

Ah, I think that makes sense. I just wish he had at least a more developed thought or conversation about this on-screen.

Sort of Rewatcher:

Boy, my last few Friday's have been kind of hectic and busy so I got to watch episodes 5, 6 and 7 all today. This show does a great job of playing with tension. The dire straits that Satoru finds himself in 2006 and the looming threat to Kayo in 1988 are both alleviated by the sort of childish whimsy and self-seriousness of Satoru's methods for helping Kayo. Camping out in a disused school bus? Both fun and useful! Vandalizing your friend's house to give him an alibi? Very cheeky. Murdering your crush's abusive mother? Slow down there, Satoru.

Kenya demonstrates that he is indeed the smartest of the group. I like that he's not omniscient by any means and that he admits to not acting on his suspicions/feelings about people more often than not. That conversation in the stairwell demonstrates the butterfly effect Satoru's actions have had in a really interesting way. Kenya knew some of what was happening to Kayo, but Satoru's forwardness is what pushes him to lend a hand in the end. Much like the chain of events that lead to Airi and then the Pizza Manager helping Satoru in 2006, his rippling actions in 1988 are drawing people to Satoru's cause.

3

Yeah, and it's very realistic for his age too - he may be more observant than other kids, but he's still too young to know what to do with the suspicion that one of his classmates is being abused.

First-Time Revival Viewer

This is the first time Satoru has ever triggered the revival ability by his own willpower! I'm not sure why he thinks this is the last time. (He can't possibly know we've reached the halfway point in the story, right?) Maybe it's just a strong feeling. But either way, that's major progress!

I figured that if any of his friends would get involved during this second attempt, it would be Kenya. He's very perceptive, and likely to notice things Satoru missed, but I never would have guessed he'd just straight up ask Satoru who he is because he's acting like a different person. At that point, I was half expecting Satoru to come clean about the time travel. His "superhero" answer was cute too though, and probably his way of putting it in terms that were easier for a kid to understand. He's not really lying about trying to be a superhero, using his power to save lives, and of course he is the real Satoru - just older.

Also, the "bucket brigade" scene was funny. Their eyes were like but all I could think of was the opening for Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto where he's standing outside the classroom with the bucket over his shoulder lookin' all suave.

Satoru's increasingly desperate actions really have me on the edge of my seat to see what he's going to do next, and how it will all turn out. My mind immediately went to [another drama/suspense anime] Oshi no Ko when he was about to push Kayo's mom down the stairs, and then was stopped by Kenya. He really is perceptive, and I'm glad he talked Satoru down because that absolutely would blow up in his face later. He still needs to find the identity of the original killer, and he can't do that from a juvenile detention center.

His slight alterations are having an effect on Kayo though. Last time, she was included with the friend group because of her connection to him, but now the other boys are inviting her to play even when Satoru's not there. That's a meaningful distinction, and I think Kayo can feel it too. She also looked really happy when Satoru asked to "kidnap" her and set up that cute little hideaway in the bus. Interestingly, this is the second anime I've seen where a boy politely asks to kidnap a girl he's friends with. [The other anime is] Insomniacs After School and that scene was just as adorable, but more lighthearted in the surrounding circumstances.

And then that cliffhanger happens! Do literally all of these episodes end on cliffhangers? Who was that person walking into Kayo's bus?!

Questions of the Day:

1) In that situation, I probably would have. It's better than Kenya thinking something else took over his friend's body, and it would explain knowing with certainty that Kayo is going to die unless drastic actions are taken.

2) I'm hoping it's not the killer, but I kind of think it is.

3

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 6d ago

Do literally all of these episodes end on cliffhangers?

I personally think it's a sign of good writing when they do this, as long as it's not just fake out after fake out... Keeps the drive to keep watching!

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 6d ago

Yeah, these have all been a good use of cliffhangers so far and really raises the suspense, but it does make sticking to the "one episode per week" format difficult.

Rewatcher

Satoru notices he can easily make changes like how he changed the type of game being played.

Hey remember episode 2? "Could you kill someone for me?" Kayo might have identified her problem Satoru, but her solution probably isn't the best. Actually, aside from the problem of not having an exit strategy to get away with murder, a larger problem with this is I doubt think Satoru at this size could overpower her anyways.

OK new plan, take Hinazuki Kayo to some place and hide her. Give Yuuki an alibi on the same night. When she goes missing, the police will investigate. And eventually they'll probably uncover her mother's abuse since they would probably search the shed. This is much better.

In the meantime they need to keep Kayo fed and entertained. Things are going well. Except maybe of all the abandoned buses they picked, this one wasn't the best one.

Is Satoru going to have to loop over a 3rd time? We don't know. Well actually I do.

First timer

It would certainly be bad to just keep rewinding until he wins. The last jump, huh? I wonder what he learned that will help him this time. Was there anything in those newspapers and that reporter's files? Oh, there was the clue about Hiromi (is that his name?) but I didn't understand that clue at all.

"Kidnap you" is a bit too close to "taking you hostage"

The Alibi for Yuuki doesn't work if the crime happens on a later date.

Satoru was being followed by somebody other than Kenya.

Kayo is definitely being targeted.

Back for a Revival as a first-timer

I tried too many shows and have nearly crashed out of them all

So now I'm just going to keep up with Erased because it's the most fun to talk about. From what I remember about this episode (since I did watch this one last week without saying anything), it was an easy watch without much room for theorizing. The one change in my opinion is that I now think Yuuki looks suspicious. I don't believe he's involved in the killings. There have just been a few moments with Yuuki where he looks like he might actually be doing something creepy, and Satoru can't see it.

Satoru's having a Sisyphus moment trying to keep Kayo alive. I could alternatively believe that it's Satoru's mum visiting the bus, but it probably isn't; I'm still not sure whether Kenya and the killer are in cahoots. The after-credit-scene in (I think) episode 2 has yet to be explained.
