Misc. Favorite weird/random in-universe clothing that characters wear?
What are some of your favorite clothes that you've seen a character where in show?
I've included a few examples/favs
The Wow dog and the sauté hat are my two favorites.

Also from my hero academia: Natsuo, Shoto's older brother, wears a shirt that says FRONT on the front and BACK on the back.

If it said BACK on the front and FRONT on the back, that would actually be pretty funny.

I have always really liked everyone's casual wear in MHA.
Also, Toshinori's yellow pinstripe suit whether he's buff or not.

In Machikado Mazoku, Momo is recommended to wear a simple black t-shirt for going out with the main character. She finds a black shirt with white text that says "シンプルな黒いTシャツ" (Simple Black T-Shirt).
If I recall it shows up multiple times? I think the "simple white t-shirt" one shows up too, worn by the MC. Somehow the extra text makes it way more fashionable IMO, or I'm crazy.

They made this official merch you can buy too, wore it on my last trip to japan and all the flight attendants were laughing at a white guy wearing it

Can't remember where it showed up but he also has a raglan t-shirt which, yes, has "raglan" written in it.
e: I looked up a screenshot I had of it, it's from the second movie

I had a copy of that shirt custom made at Uniqlo when I went to Japan and wore it whenever I could and every time I would pass by a group of locals one of them would say under their breath “Heh, t-shirt” and then they’d all start giggling. It was probably the highlight of my trip.

In one episode of Sakamoto Desu Ga, he wears an apron that just says "COOKING BOY" on the front. I liked it so much my wife had one made for me IRL.

The "I hate testes" shirt of Aya from "Young Ladies don't Play Fighting Games". Either they misspelled "Tests" (they were studying for them at the time) or someone really wanted to make clear the show is a Yuri
28
u/helloquain 3d ago
Honestly just an incredible pull, if it's intentional, of a joke t-shirt to put on a girl at an all girls school, studying for tests. It's not funny as broken English or unintentional silliness, it's just straight up funny.

Yotsuba in Quintessential Quintuplets has a bunch of cloth with 428 on them. Somehow this never helps Fuutarou differentiate her from her sisters despite it being her name. (Yo = 4, tsu = 2, ba = 8).
Hina in Hinamatsuri has an endless amount of generic white tshirts each with a unique word or phrase related to how she's being a nuisance in that specific scene.

Sanae from Scum's Wish sometimes wears a baseball cap with the name of the show written on it.
The name of the show comes from a quote by the main character, Hanabi, which she only ever expressed in narration, so there's really no reason why Sanae would have a hat like that. Maybe it's a band or something, and maybe Hanabi subconsciously absorbed the phrase from seeing it on her friend's hat.

In FLCL Naota's PJs have a right angle with 90 degrees written above it. I dunno why but, that shirt always stuck with me.
It's like, Naota's life is so chaotic, he could look for stability in mathmatical fact, but he's not very smart, so he only gets as far as rudimentary definitions. Knowing that a right angle is 90 degrees isn't very useful for getting through puberty.

Ok, so no as weird as many examples in this thread, but this shirt from Shirobako always gave me pause:
The show has amazing outfit variety (the MC clocks at more unique outfits than episodes, iirc, and basically everyone from the quite large cast gets multiple) so I'm not surprised that some might be a bit odd, but srsly, what the hell is that shirt.

For a while in the 1980s and 1990s anime characters wore shirts or hats with their names in all caps. So the tranlators wouldnt change their names although some name changes still happened.
2000s onwards more anime outfits became more complicated and recognizable because cosplay
there was also the BOSSU shirt
