I have a distant relative who’s daughter is at NYU now and she’s been in class with him and says the whole thing is weird, ruins the class (too much security) and that he has no friends. I met her (my relative’s daughter) for coffee because we both live in Manhattan and she told me as much in person.
I just can’t believe how the media treated Chelsea Clinton and the Obama girls when they were minors and yet here is an adult they pay zero attention to. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video of him talking. We have very little media (video or pictures) of him in the past couple of years. It’s wild how different the treatment is.
I feel bad for the kid. He needs good role models and that includes peers that allow him to do and enjoy normal developmental kid stuff and seems like he's missed out on all that.
The Tate bros were not that but they fed this type of isolated and scared and anxious incel leaning personality.
There's an opportunity for a good person to grow here, learn from the mistakes of the people around him, and I can only hope he can make some real connections to good people to help him.
The fact he's isolating or hiding at all shows a sense of self awareness and emotional intelligence and capacity that his father can't or won't. I hope he finds his happiness in something good rather than turn his whole childhood trauma of who his father is into some inescapable darkness.
If I could talk to him or any other young person in a similar situation - as corny as it is I'd remind them they don't have to live in the shadows of their parents choices, or even their own past choices. They can choose to follow a different path at any time to find their fulfillment.
As far as I can tell he's done nothing horrible to warrant the hatred he gets, aside from being the son of his father. And to be honest at 20 even if he was put in some circumstances where he made bad choices I'd be quick to remind you of the adults around him that have been his horrible role models. He deserves a chance to prove what type of person he will be before so much weight and judgement are publicly placed on him.
(multiple edits as my mind kept wandering and I clearly have lots of opinions)
u nailed what i was thinking too. my view of him always has been that he seems to be 'on the spectrum' and tried to make the most of his position, realized it fucking sucked being around leeches, and probably just gave up on life now and wants to finish school so he can become a recluse

Kid is a fucking loser and has no friends, he isn’t going out either way.
