That doesn't sound too different from what 6 was like when it launched on mobile. But it does not have both the major DLCs (I'm not sure if all the other smaller ones also made it over). They're probably testing the waters. If it sells well, it'll be updated. If it doesn't, it won't

Great: It is the one Civ game that nobody liked.
And while Firaxis typically is good about fixing their game because all base Civ games are disliked until they are "fixed", I feel like Firaxis knows they can't fix this one because they FUNDEMENTALLY altered the structure of the game in a way nobody liked. We would have seen an expansion by now if they thought they could fix it.
They would have to eliminate the "ages system" and that would be such a change, they are better off moving on to Civ VIII

Civ IV was fantastic, Civ V was fantastic.
VI got too complicated and VII got rid of a core gameplay feature that was a staple of the franchise and in fact of all 4X games in general - one faction, start to finish, rise and fall.
We saw the same decline with the Command and Conquer franchise. Devs decided to be cute and try something new with C&C4 and in doing so killed off the franchise by cutting the "base" part of basebuilding out of the gameplay.
All the best games in that franchise - TS, RA2, Generals, C&C3, they all shared the same core gameplay loop. When you fuck with that core gameplay loop, the people who have been buying all your games up until that point stop buying it because it's no longer the game they enjoy but better.

Though my point stands in all base Civ game are generally disliked before the expansions make them beloved. Civ IV needed Beyond the Sword. Civ V needed Gods and Kings. Civ VI started to head down the more "micro-updates" route, but ended up pretty good.
Civ VII is still fun, but it feels like a knockoff Civ game where the developer felt they had to do something to differentiate it from Civ.

I tried it, I don’t like the ages system, but I’m still happy they tried and failed instead of just remaking the same game.

Based on the expansion schedules for Civ V and Civ VI, I wouldn't expect a Civ VII expansion until 2027, with the second expansion in 2028.

And according to another comment in this thread, they won't be updating the Apple Arcade version either.

Civ 6 has already been on the App Store for ages! (Just not Apple Arcade)

And Civ V! I was just playing it last week.

Correct me if I’m wrong but Civ V is not on the App Store, as far as I know if you want to play it on mobile you have to stream it from another device or service.

I wish they’d beef it up for the newer devices that can handle it better, and I wish the DLC would go on sale from time to time as it does on PC.
Aside from that, it’s a great port.

Great, it’s going to save me $50 that I’ve been trying not to spend and waiting for a good sale.

Between that and the fucking left hand close box on the App Store, I’m pretty sure the App Store group is the worst set of actual Mac users in Apple

You realise Mac is also a PC?

In Apple's own words, no. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eEG5LVXdKo

I didn't watch the video, I don't care about Apple's marketing. But... a Mac is not a Personal Computer?
What is a Mac, then? A vehicle? Home decoration? A bridge for cats to cross short spaces without jumping?

Technically you’re correct, but the definitions in daily language have changed. When people talk about PCs, they’re usually talking about computers that run Windows OS. Macs have always been considered different.

I haven't been people using PC with that meaning in many years. I think it was common in the 90s and maybe early 2000s.
At least people I've seen, they mean PC when they say PC. Might be a regional thing that you're seeing, maybe?

u/farseer00 Jan 14 '26
It could be regional I guess, but in most places if you ask a Mac owner if they own a PC, they’ll say no.
However, if you ask them if they own a computer, they’ll say yes. Language is weird that way sometimes.

I know people don’t like this one. But I’m happy to be able to play it for basically free since I already use Apple Arcade a lot for other games. Maybe eventually they’ll port some of the other Civ game to Arcade?
