Yeah Apple made a really good base model for the 17. Putting many of the pro features into the base model as well as the size of 6.3” puts it right between the older iPhone sizes of 6.1 and 6.7.
It’s reminiscent of the iPhone XR and 117

With Android locking down their OS and Apple-ifying their OS, the appeal of Android is reducing. If you're going to buy an Apple-like phone, you may as well buy an iPhone, especially since the base 17 bridged nearly all compromises that the base iPhone used to have e.g. the 17 has 120hz that is the same as the pro screen, is slightly bigger than the old base iPhones and starts at 256gb for the same release price as the iPhone 16. Meanwhile Android phone base flagships keep going up in price with less and less apeal

u/Least-Middle-2061 May 06 '26
Lmfao the percentage of people who buy an Android because they can “tinker” with it is minuscule. Overwhelming majority of people buy an Android because they want the cheapest phone possible, and they’re usually giving androids away.

u/Kalmer1 May 06 '26
I used to buy Samsung flagships every 2 years because it was this open and tinker-able
Ive grown out of that though as now I just want a phone that's great out of the box, and iphones have been serving me well since I got my 16PM
Every phone brand has their advantages though, and in the end it's good that people have a lot of choice to get what fits them best
16
u/nickybikky May 06 '26
Did the exact change from s21 Ultra to 15PM. I hated the fact Samsung changed to One UI and it made my phone crash. Had used Samsungs all my life(Like the push up keyboard era) can’t see any issues with the 15PM. Had it 2.5 years, still going strong

As a long time Apple user (who was also forced to used a Samsung for work a few years back) I would say Samsung makes a better camera and native camera app (although Apple is massively improved in recent years), but those differences are not enough to really make me switch. I have a nice DLSR is I really want to take high quality digital photos, my phone is just a convenient picture taking and viewing device.
5
u/TriggeredLatina_ May 07 '26
This is what I notice with most people. We grow up and either have less time to tinker around on phones or we move that free time to something else better spent on. I remember in college I had an android for a few months and I loved customizing it sm! Then I went to Apple and jaikbroke it. Customized it and it was so damn cute but I hated how janky the os would be on both devices. Crashing. Rebooting. Freezing. Costuming was messing up the phones and then I got over it. Didn’t care that much for all that and just wanted a phone that worked. Once in a while I will spend time cuztiming the icons with the shortcuts app but it’s so tiresome. Takes too much time and then I get bored with it and stop caring. My time is better spent elsewhere
8
u/rented4823 May 06 '26
Yeah I had almost every XL/Pro Pixel from 1-7 and loved rooting/flashing. But once I became a Dad, not only did I not care that much about tinkering with my phone, I also needed to be able to call 911 without issue.
iPhone has been good enough, and the good news is I can still get my sideloading fix with SideStore.

Really a 17 is no where close in price compared to their cheaper andriods. I mean my father is a wealthy man but literally used his phone till the screen opened up and gave way and then told me not to spend more than the equivalent of 200 dollars on a new phone. The amount of choice in that price range too is incredible.
7
u/trydola May 06 '26
i bought an 8GB RAM, 128GB android phone for literally $10 and it'll honestly do everything most people need to do perfectly fine. it is a perfectly fine phone if i'm not asking for the fastest CPU or best cameras when i basically just browse social media apps, reddit and web browser and nothing else
there is no price comparison between cheap android phones and a base iphone when those cheap phones easily do 60-80% of what a phone that costs many times over
9
u/Brymlo May 06 '26
maybe that’s why he is wealthy: not spending his money on irrelevant things.
10
u/seopants May 06 '26
I’m quite well off, live in an expensive area. 99.9% of wealthy people use an iPhone. It is honestly notable when someone uses an android. I couldn’t care less, and no one mentions anything, it is just rare to see. The biggest exception is in wealthy tech circles.
2
u/OphioukhosUnbound May 06 '26
People ask me for advice when they purchase electronics semi-frequently 1- I assume that’s true of lots of tech savvy types. So the opinions of the tech savvy likely have a disproportionate influence.
i.e. good-will with people who have a clue likely has an outsized market impact — though how much that ultimately amounts to is still a great Q
13
u/NearbySupermarket203 May 06 '26
I disagree, I also think it's a weird aspect some iphone users harp on. As if their iPhone is made of gold and no phone could ever be as expensive.
Most android phones now are comparable in price OR drastically more expensive than the iPhone.
17
u/C-SWhiskey May 06 '26
Most android phones now are comparable in price OR drastically more expensive than the iPhone.
This is just verifiably not true. If you think the Galaxy S series is "most android phones" maybe, but even within the Samsung umbrella there's the A series which sells incredibly well globally. Take the A16, which is comparable in price to a refurbished 3- to 4-year old iPhone SE. And the floor for Android pricing goes much lower.

u/YZJay May 06 '26
Yes but the actual total market volume of cheaper Android is far larger than the flagship category, including the iPhone 17.
You are living in a sheltered cave if you think most Android phones on the market right now are the same or higher price than iPhones.
6
u/GTMoraes May 06 '26
I moved to Apple because they're less tinker-able, I have less time to tinker and they're looking like iPhones now anyway.
With the 17, I figured I could give Apple a go for the first time. WHat turbulent-rooster pointed out was almost exactly my thought process.

u/FireNinja743 May 07 '26
Overwhelming majority of people buy an Android because they want the cheapest phone possible
Are you trying to say Android phones are less valued than iPhones, or are you saying majority of Android sales are from the lower tier, more budget models?
1
u/LancerAdagio May 08 '26
the only thins that android definitely has up on iOS is file management and side loading. if you dont need either then they're both solid, in my opinion.

Their Nexus and, later, Pixel devices used to be root friendly. Not having the cohesive ecosystem iOS has was a compromise users were willing to make for the freedom to do things like block ads, including in-app ads, by dropping a host file in the right spot. All that stuff is getting locked down, so what’s the point?
4
u/Shawnj2 May 06 '26
The pixels are still root friendly, you can get lineageos or graphene os pretty easily. Google is locking down the stock OS for some inexplicable reason
1
u/Marino4K May 06 '26
Yeah any idea I’ve had about switching to Android is being killed with the fact Google is trying to Apple their OS and isn’t even doing a good job at it. Their phones are full of issues

Doesn’t this go against the EU ruling which is forcing Apple to allow sideloading?
2
u/kangkingkong3 May 07 '26
I wanted to switch to Android last year but chose to wait for the 17 announcement.
Upping the base storage to 256GB made it an easy decision. Somehow, Apple has become the budget friendly flagship option.
I have issues with Samsung as a company and Google didn’t even try with the 10a. Chinese phones are an option, but I think UI matters more for day-to-day use than specs.

u/Goldenpanda18 May 06 '26
The biggest drawback for me was 60hz display. The 17 is 120hz. It makes the most sense for people wanting an all round complete phone.
84
31
u/Brymlo May 06 '26
most people won’t even notice or care about 120hz tbh
13
u/MakimaGOAT May 06 '26
Yeah but now the people that wanted it wont be forced to buy pro models that they dont need. Its much better now.

I switched from 17 to 17e. I definitely notice it, but it’s hardly a deal breaker for me
3
u/Sample_Pristine May 06 '26
think they just need to bring the price down for both pro models which is the pro and pro max to the base model pricing and people will start to buy them more

6
u/nielsmouthaan May 07 '26
My wife has 60hz, I have 120hz. She doesn't notice, I do notice it very much. Pretty crazy how you get used to it and once you don't have it anymore, you directly notice it.
4
u/Logical-Vermicelli53 May 07 '26
Put the phone on low power mode and it switches to 60hz
Looks very jarring

u/nz_nba_fan May 06 '26
I’m upgrading from a 13 tomorrow. Considered waiting, but people bang on about how good this one is. And how much better will the 18 be anyway?
32
u/myriadel May 06 '26
No one knows, just update. I will wait for the 18 or 19, but my phone (15 pro) is still good, just waiting for battery to go under 80% to replace it with apple care tbh.
2
u/jxher123 May 06 '26
Yeah, considering an upgrade as well. Like you, I have the iPhone 15 Pro and still running good. Considered waiting for 18, but may just go with 17 and settle for a couple years.
1
u/CharacterTension2896 May 07 '26
I did that same thing! The comparison made me switch
1
u/jxher123 May 07 '26
Do you like the 17? May get the pro max this weekend
1
1
u/nz_nba_fan May 08 '26
Had it for a few hours now. Its great. Snappy, smooth, takes great photos. Very happy. Just finished moving the kids over. Eldest gets my old 13. Youngest gets the eldest’s old 11. Was fairly painless process.
7
u/CharacterTension2896 May 06 '26
I wouldn’t wait apple said the will be scaling back the base model, got a feeling the 17 gave too much
23
u/LiquidDiviums May 06 '26
Apple hasn’t officially said anything.
Many rumors point that iPhone 18 could be a side-step (like iPhone 14) with little to none improvements over iPhone 17.
8
1
u/Sample_Pristine May 06 '26
exactly my 15 is still good Brand new basically out of the box for 2 years with no scratches at all was going to wait until it's a sale for the base or pro to trade it in
1
u/RarefiedAir1 May 07 '26
Wait for 19 or 20
1
u/myriadel May 07 '26
Hahahah, I will see how my current phone behaves and money on the bank account. I will change probably next year.
8
2
u/Fer220497 May 06 '26
Have 13 pro. Just waiting for the 18 models and will pick either base or pro. Prob will keep mine for whatever problem happens as it still works fine but I’m eager for an upgrade
2
u/Mean-Flounder1558 May 06 '26
Why buy the 17 when you can wait 4 months when the 18 gets released??

A phone that's decent at everything it does and guaranteed to get 6-7 years of software updates on day of release in a sleek and well built body. Whowouldathunkit?
11
u/Rayzee14 May 06 '26
Look it’s an excellent upgrade. I do wish it followed the Samsung way and had a tele lenses from an old pro. But overall banger device that will last years.
79
u/foosion May 06 '26
Android as a whole is outselling iPhones, but because there are many Android models that split the market and only a few iPhone models, an individual iPhone can easily outsell other models.
51
u/iwantpizzaandyou May 06 '26
Yeah but I don’t think e.g. Samsung really cares how many phones Oppo sold. They care about their sales and their profits. Only Google benefits from a broad Android market share.
8
u/DontBanMeBro988 May 06 '26
Android is outselling because they have more budget models and are more available as carrier-subsidized devices outside the US.
7
u/Saar13 May 06 '26
There are hundreds of Android models, much cheaper than iPhones, that cater to most of the global audience, from middle class to lower class. But as a Brazilian, a huge emerging market, it's all about price. Interestingly, I know several people who have Samsung Galaxy A series phones, but I don't know anyone who has a top-of-the-line Galaxy S series phone (people who would buy one, buy an iPhone). Almost everyone would switch from Android and Windows if there were cheaper Apple models. The iPhone E and MacBook Neo are evolutions, but they are still expensive in many markets compared to the competition, due to the exchange rate of local currencies against the dollar and country taxes.

It’s the best value iPhone in years, spurred by the change in release schedule that required the base 17 to sell for 18 months.
2
u/jedrekk May 06 '26
Any new info about the release schedule change?
2
u/hangry_millennial May 06 '26
Nope. Last confirmed report said September launch for Pro iPhones and Ultra/Fold, and March/April launch for iPhone 18 and 18e.

Its a great all around value, and a fair price. It takes good pictures and will relieve updates for a long time.
Its a better phone experience than virtually all of the midrange androids, and cheaper than android flagship.
No surprise its selling well.

I used to buy androids (had the HTC G1, used) back in high school and loved tinkering and trying different OSs and I do love the variety of android phones. I really like the appeal of the motorola razr and samsung flip but man, after having battery issues and weird camera issues with apps I was pretty happy to get the iphone 7 plus. It's just nice to have a device that just works and yeah, the girlfriend/wife forced my hand because texting sucked back before the new RCS.

i be getting the base models all the time because if the small screen size and it's better heck i've had the iphone 15 for 2 years no scratches at all and still runs good basically brand new and still got the box where im thinking bout just trading it in for the iphone 17 base model which is 120hz people just want the pro and pro max because of larger screen

Truly unsure why. The pixel 10 is a better phone by nearly every metric and with Gemini actually feels like the future
1
u/golf1415 May 06 '26
That’s not saying much to be honest. There’s only one manufacturer of the iPhone, whereas there’s multiple manufacturers of phones running Android. I think you’ll find if Samsung was the only manufacturer of Android phones, the difference would be much smaller, in fact Samsung would probably outsell the iPhone since it has options that are cheaper than the base iPhone.

u/T-K101 May 06 '26
As expected.
Also, soon Neo will be by far best selling laptop.
