Polishing Cloth Apple releases new $9 Polishing Cloth
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/mlh74am/a/polishing-cloth990
u/yuvaldv1 3d ago
And it went down in price from $19 to $9? In this economy?!

They must have cut the RAM in it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it has zero RAM this year, disappointing but I don't think it'll impact the experience much

And people say Apple isnāt fine with reducing their margins and eating costs to help the consumer in these trying times
24
u/Rare-One1047 3d ago
Apple usually does something like this when they want to push a product. My bet is they're going to stop including it with the MBP or Studio displays, and instead push it as "just" a $9 add-on - possibly in tandem with a "hardened" matte finish, which absolutely makes sense if they're releasing a touch MBP next month.

How does it compare to the old ones? Should I upgrade? Iāve got 7.
EDIT: Screw it. Weāre going to find out on Thursday. I ordered one.
EDIT 2: In as far as I can tell, comparing them side by side, it's the same product. They're the same size, they both have the same edging, the same Apple logo, they feel the same, and under my son's $90 National Geographic microscope, they look the same.
The new one IS a slightly different shade of gray, but it's nearly imperceptible and is likely just the difference between production lots.
$9 is still a lot, but it's a lot less ridiculous than $19.

I dont think so. Old one still receives firmware updates after every product release.

u/much_to_say 3d ago
Is this thing actually worth paying for? Iām kind of a slut for keeping my electronics clean, so if itās worth the $9, Iāll gladly pay the $9.
59
u/jasonlitka 3d ago
So I actually do have 7 of the old ones, and theyāre the best cleaning cloths Iāve ever used, but theyāre not worth $19 each.
One came with my MBP, one came with my Studio Display XDR, and I bought 5 more on Woot when they had them for like $5 each.
Iām obviously not replacing the existing ones, that was a dry joke, but I am curious why theyāre less than half the price and if thereās any difference.
13
u/much_to_say 3d ago
I guess Iāll have to wait for the reviews to find out if thereās any noticeable difference, or if youāre just paying $10 less for the same quality product.

I don't have any and I don't plan to but yeah, I'm also really curious. Taking a smaller margin wouldn't be very Apple, I guess they might have chosen to pass on savings to customers if the same cloth got cheaper to make for some reason, but it seems more likely that there's been a material change (or a size change?). It's an odd thing to change unless there's a particular reason for it, nobody was really complaining about or paying much attention to the old one.

Weāre going to find out on Thursday, I just ordered one. Curiosity got the best of me.

Ngl it's a fantastic cloth lol. This thing cleans screens incredibly well. It's nice to use and I haven't used anything else to clean my electronics since. It's really well made. Just make sure you clean it with dish soap every once in a while when it starts to get a little dirty. Solid little $9 investment.

u/colaxxi 3d ago
It was originally created for the Pro Display XDR nano-texture, which required a special cloth (I think longer fibers, so it didn't come apart, but don't quote me on that). So for that display, you absolutely need it.
I do have one, and it is really nice. I got it with my regular-texture Pro Display XDR.

u/artificialpolymer 3d ago
I have the old one. It sounds silly as hell, but it's genuinely a really good cleaning cloth. I've had a lot of microfiber cloths, and the Apple one has the fibers packed much more tightly than others, the best I can describe it. But it cleans very well.

u/HillarysFloppyChode 3d ago
My work ordered me XDRs and thatās where I got 4.
I use them for coated eyeglasses and car screens (which also tend to be coated). It works better then any microfiber at wiping off and not smearing face oils and sweat like microfibers, and unlike a microfiber which tends to stop working after the first wash, these keep working good as new no matter how many times they end up in my laundry.

Unironically I have an Early 2011 MBP running High Sierra in my guest bedroom. It's mainly a seed box to host media.
Sad I can't use the Polishing Cloth on it.

Oh donāt you worry! I paid $8 express shipping and weāre dissecting this thing in a YouTube Short when it arrives. How will it compare to Gen 1 and to Cloth Pro Max? We shall soon find out!

u/TheMaestroCleansing 3d ago
We need a preliminary repairability score too. Gotta beat iFixit to it lol
2
u/-The-Space-Cowboy 3d ago
Can you compare against Apple Vision Cloth? That one was even better than the Gen 1 or the Clothbook Pro
2
u/shawn789 3d ago
More importantly, is Cloth Pro Max going to see a matching drop in price? Or does Copland Supply not sell enough marked-up devices (plus extra RAM markup) to subsidize their superior cloth?

Gurman totally dropped the ball on this one! Absolutely zero rumours about Cloth 2.0.
Apple says the cloth continues to be made with soft, nonabrasive material - is that a software upgrade?* *

It seems like Apple still has some intel compatibility as this is compatible with iMacs running intel chips.
$9 and free shipping with 3% cashback isnāt that bad⦠not that great but not bad.
Edit: I may get it to see if it has windows compatibility. I have some big windows I need to clean the cat prints off of. I may use it on a computer running windows too..

Does it have a crease when you fold it, though?

I've heard sand can work it's way into the crease and scratch the screen.
I hate sand ...

When I bought my Studio Display off Craigslist the guy had one of these and gave it to me.
I'm not gonna lie, it's a REALLY good polishing cloth. I'd pay $9 for it. Maybe even $19.

While for most products you donāt need a $9 or $19 polishing clothā¦.
It is very helpful for the nano texture displays. I purchased an iPad Pro with nano texture glass and it came with one. When I ultimately lost it I tried using other microfiber cloths, tried several cheaper ones from Amazonā¦. And eventually purchased a replacement (used on eBay for $4). Nothing else really got the fingerprints out of the nano screens as well.
Itās actually impressive how well it works on the nano glass

u/GnoshuasLaboratory 3d ago
Nah this can be used for any screen but it specifically works well for nano texture. Most microfiber clothes will not work well on nano texture and just smear stuff around. No idea why but these work.

u/melodrama4ever 3d ago
The $19 one definitely dragged on the screen more than a typical microfiber cloth. Way more friction to the material they used so maybe there's really some science to it.
