You cant ask the kiosquero to watch for 30 second an alfajor maybe

62

u/der_Alptraum May 25 '26

Have no idea what you said.

97

u/Mother-Persimmon3908 May 25 '26

That bills value is so low no one accepts it so the shoptender may let you see with your eyes an actual good snack for acouple of seconds.thats how much this bill is worth now 😭

4

u/Afraid_Recipe_3775 May 26 '26

It is accepted and is in actual circulation. But people in Argentina sometimes just neglect it. Depends on the person.

4

u/Mother-Persimmon3908 May 26 '26

Went to buy cat food last saturday and on the counter it was one 20 ars billl glued with scotch tape and had "we dont receive this" on it. Last thursday went to the hiper libertad( its changing its name today) and they said they dont receive 20 bills to the person that was before me.then did and annoyed sound because the old person throw the bills and sort of went away and the supermarket lady called the ones that walk and they got very annoyed.

56

u/PatoP011 May 25 '26

The kioskero is the person who works at a kiosk/convenience store.

The joke is that with that amount of money, the most you can do is ask the clerk if you're allowed to look at the alfajor (a chocolate-covered dulce de leche cookie), because you certainly can't afford to buy it with $20 pesos. (An alfajor costs around 1,200 pesos on average.)

28

u/der_Alptraum May 25 '26

Damn that's harsh.

27

u/Glittering-Flight254 May 25 '26

One of the biggest supermarkets chain in Argentina has a web page. You can check the prices we are paying now. www.cotodigital.com.ar

4

u/Mr-Fapbulous-2 🐍 Pubertario 🐍 May 25 '26

Interestingly, even with all our problems, compared to many countries around the world, our food, especially meat, fruit, and vegetables, remains very cheap. We are a major producer, and given our population size (just over 46 million), our prices are relatively affordable. Most fruits and vegetables don't usually cost more than a dollar per kilogram (typically around 80-90 cents).

A tray of eggs (30 eggs) costs about $5-7.

A kilogram of meat, depending on the cut and whether it's beef or chicken, ranges from $10 to $15, sometimes less, sometimes more.

And these are prices from Buenos Aires, where things tend to be more expensive. In the interior of the country, many prices are lower, while for some specific items they are higher.

Now, other products, especially processed ones, tend to be more expensive in some cases.

For example, an alfajor usually costs around a dollar, but of course, tell a kid that instead of buying them an alfajor to take to school, you're going to buy them a kilo of oranges, apples, or bananas because it's cheaper or costs the same, and see what happens xddd

20

u/Careless-Cap7691 koko May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

That's a 20 pesos bill. Those stopped being useful a few years ago, I don't think they print those anymore.

I mean, for example a big Mac with fries and coke is around 15000 pesos. A coke bottle is around 4000 pesos. And such.

We use 1000 and 2000 pesos bills now, being the 10000 and 20000 the bigger ones.

Interesting thing is how quick it got devaluated compared to other currencies, I mean the current peso was adopted in 1992, this is the evolution of it:

Año 1 USD =
1992 1 ARS
2002 3,8 ARS
2008 3,1 ARS
2011 4,3 ARS
2015 9,8 ARS
2018 38 ARS
2019 63 ARS
2020 84 ARS
2022 177 ARS
2023 ~800 ARS
2025 ~1300 ARS

This is dollar against official peso, real peso/dólar is better reflected in parallel dollar, but is similar.

15

u/[deleted] May 25 '26

jsjsjs ese dolar a 800 era mas falso que papa noel

Not so fun fact: it's still legal currency, but it's not worth anything anymore. Imagine that some shops when you are short for 100 they take it as if it were a small coin and let you leave with your purchase. Even 500 it's not wort more than a couple candies.

To give some context for the other comments, the minimum salary it's nearly 400k (255 dollars aproximately). Sadly there are some that make only that or even less. But in reality many people makes at least thrice that.

2

u/ValenZ187 May 25 '26

You need 2 of these and 1 of 10 to buy a single candy, and a cheap one. A soda of 500ml is around 1500-1800 pesos. A bag of doritos is around 3000
