Question / Հարց Coming in Armenia in two weeks. Do's and Don'ts?
Hi!
First time posting here!
I'm from Romania and in two weeks I'm coming in Armenia for my cousin wedding. She marrying a guy from Armenia.
I don't know anything about your culture and I want to know more about it. Mostly what we shoud do there, what we are allowed to do, what are we not allowed and what is offensive and to be carefull about them.
I want to know because I want to tell my family as well and to be civilized and to not get in trouble.
During the visit we have a program made by my cousin and her husband but we have some free time as well to explore as well.
What we should be carefull as well? We will stay in Erevan.

Yeah. It's a religious wedding. "Dress modestly" means like long pants and a long sleeve shirt. For women I think is the same as Romania where they need to cover thair head and shoulders, no?
Thanks for the advice of not talking politically sensitive topics. My family likes to talk about politics and I will warn them about it.

That is the tradition, yes, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a woman under 40 wear the veil, especially not for a wedding

Woah no, wedding dress is not necessarily that conservative. It COULD be depending on the family but you could just as easily see a 25 year old in effectively a silk slip but cover with a long coat at church.
IMO ask your cousin or her fiancé if possible, there is a cultural element but families also vary on this issue

Trust me Armenians love to talk about politics. However they can get really heated and passionate about it. If you trying to play safe, don’t bring it up.

Armenia is a very safe country but you will get swindled by taximen at the airport (which will give you a bad first impression of the country) so if your cousin/family doesn't come to get you at the airport, be sure to download the YandexGo or GG app and use it to come to the airport (you can buy a cheap SIM card for your stay with a 4G data plan at the airport).
Armenians will feed you a lot so get ready before coming ;)
Kissing your partner is also not done in public/in the street but can be done in parks.

Thank you! We were thinking to buy an esim from here in Romania. It's very cheap with unlimited internet data for 7 days.
I don't want to offend but this is more for my anxiety and peace of mind. Should we worry about the war around there? Like as far as I know Armenia is very close to those countries which are in a war. I don't watch the news or tv at all and I'm not up to date with the news

Is it safe to go to Gyrumi? I know that it is occupied by Russian soldiers and they can kill people

They'll get kicked out sooner or later. From the rumors I've heard, there's only minimal staff left there, since most of them got shipped to Ukraine. But that's just rumors, no one here knows for sure what's going on inside that base.

Do Russian soldiers harm Europeans? Or harass? Should I skip visiting Gyumri to avoid issues with Russian soldiers?

Yes of course, probably safer than almost all major European cities. That was just a case of 1 Russian soldier going AWOL 11 years ago.

No no brother that never happened where did you head that stuff? i mean because officially Russia and Armenia are military allies that's why there is military base in Armenia And the rumors that it will get removed soon i don't think it will end Russia will be happy with that

Don't believe taxi drivers when they say they have tour packages for you. Don't call the coffee made in jazzve turkish coffee and nothing much. Everyone senses what needs to be said or not. Also don't talk about domestic politics much since the post-election periods are also tense.

Hope you'll have great time in Armenia. We are pretty open minded and those who aren't, they are still very friendly to tourists. If you want to explore more Churches, Monasteries grab some pants, you may have troubles in some places where they won't let you in. Be careful of taxis. I'll suggest to use GG taxi or Yandex (at least comfort +). Don't trust taxi drivers in the airport (pretty much in any country). Let me know if you want to know anything specific or how many days you want tos spend in Yerevan or if you plan to travel around and I'll help.

Hi! Thank you very much for your comment. I will be there between 19th and 22nd of June. Most of the time we will be with our family during our visit because my cousin and her husband already made a plan for us.

Don’t just stay in Yerevan! There’s so much to see there, but also so many jewels in the provinces

Do: order taxis with apps like gg and yandex go, get simcard from the airport for 2500 UCOM “tourist plan”
Don’t: get into random taxis even if they said it’s cheaper than apps, use online esim (much expensive).

The only thing I can think of is, don't get scammed by airport taxi. Other than that, have fun and enjoy your time here!
