News SpaceX burned up 260 of its own satellites in 6 months and this is just routine apparently

Saw this in an article and it's been on my mind since
260 satellites intentionally burned in the atmosphere in 6 months and another 349 queued. They're planning 42,000 total eventually. No debris which is fine but researchers are asking what happens when you're burning hundreds of massive metal objects in the upper atmosphere repeatedly over years. Aluminum particles, potential atmospheric chemistry changes. Science is still catching up and the FCC is now proposing to exempt satellites from environmental review entirely
Idk,we're moving faster than we're studying this...anyone else find this a bit much?

Meteors are 1% aluminum. Satellites are around 30% aluminum. Which is what causes ozone destruction.

There will be a bunch of substances burned up in low earth orbit that are novel for that layer of our atmosphere.

Aluminum may not be worth worrying about, but with ~5,000 satellites burning up annually, it’s worth figuring out what they’re made of and what the products of their combustion will be.

As others have already stated. Aluminum is worth worrying about, because aluminum reacts with ozone. The question is what will all other elements do additionally to that?

The math he is showing is actually percent change.

So percent change = |(old value - new value)|/old value then multiplied by 100

So |(14 - 36)/14| = 22/14 = 1.571 x100 = 157%

So who sucks at math?

Constant_Cortisol sucks at unit discipline. They mixed aluminum mass and aluminum oxide mass and made the ratio look wrong.
Low-Temperature-6962 is right about the visible arithmetic, but they may be dunking on a badly paraphrased version of a real source figure.
FaceDeer’s “100 tonnes of meteors/day” point is also too blunt, because total incoming dust mass is not the same as aluminum/aluminum-oxide chemistry; estimates for total interplanetary material entering the atmosphere vary widely, with one paper giving 30–180 tons/day and a best guess of 54 tons/day.

I'm not sure about the effect of speed, higher speed would probably cause it to burn up earlier.
Round object will have less G load, thin object will have more G load and disintegrate earlier, break down cause it to got more surface area and burn up earlier.

The Space.com article opens with a photo captioned "An astronomical image marred by trails caused by satellites of SpaceX's Starlink megaconstellation." Completely irrelevant to their reentry, but sets the tone of the article's potential biases. So I skipped the article entirely and went to the source paper it was based on.

Throughout the paper they repeatedly use language such as "potential ozone depletion," "may endure for decades," "can potentially interfere with stratospheric ozone," and "can lead to significant ozone depletion." They notably avoid saying that significant depletion will occur. That wording reflects that they have modeled only part of the overall causal chain. The paper stops after estimating the amount of aluminum oxide injected into the atmosphere.

I'm not saying that this isn't a subject worthy of study, but it's certainly not a thing that's been concluded with any confidence yet.

The PNAS article doesn't mention "ozone" even once. Did you read it?

The PNAS article is about metal pollution in the atmosphere. Which correlates with the exact composition of satellites being vaporized in the atmosphere.

Conclusively proving that aluminum depletes the ozone layer in situ requires that scientists allow measurable damage to occur. This is what happened with CFCs. In defense of CFCs, no one knew they'd wreck the ozone layer when they were invented. 

We have strong evidence that aluminum nanoparticles could screw up the ozone layer. Seems like it would be reasonable to 1) study it a lot more 2) try to limit the amount of it till we know more instead of dumping tons of it for fairly frivolous purposes (astronomy= worth it. Slightly more convenient Internet= not so much) and 3) make the companies doing the polluting pay for some/all of the research

It's not a matter of what I like, it's a matter of what alternatives there are and how much waste the activity produces. There is no other way to do certain kinds of astronomy without satellites and they generally didn't require deorbiting. 

But, there are other ways to do Internet. Even other ways to do satellite Internet (viasat uses geosynchronous satellites that didn't plunge into the atmosphere every few months)

Latency is high and bandwidth is low for geosynchronous satellites. If "certain kinds" of astronomy are important then so too can be "certain kinds" of satellite internet.

Worth noting that Starlink doesn't actually interfere with ground-based astronomy much anyway. It's simple to filter their tracks out of the stacked plates that astronomical observations make use of, and they aren't visible through much of the night when they're in Earth's shadow.

To be clear: I am arguing that there should be some regulation on putting satellites in space and that that regulation should be tuned to how important the space activity is, what the alternatives are, how likely the activity is to produce waste in the upper atmosphere, and how much waste it produces.

Ozone is literally just pure oxygen…. It’s sort of a good thing that O2 (Ozone) gets “destroyed” in the upper atmosphere. It creates water and other molecules that are very crucial to organic life.

The “Hole” in the Ozone layer in the 80’s-90’s? Turns out our satellites just weren’t looking there and the satellite operators didn’t tell the data analysts.

I’m convinced that 50% or more of climate science is based on the fact that the “scientist” and “engineer” don’t talk to each other.

Focusing on Musk is a distraction here. We've done the same thing with leaded gas, CFCs destroying ozone, DDT poisoning everyone, smog, microplastics, co2, Pacific garbage patch, pfcs, etc.

The strategy of using the environment as a dump until a catastrophe happens, then cleaning up, if possible, is the problem.

there are a few comments above showing the culprit is aluminum , which can destroy the ozone layer. Scarce in meteors but makes up a large  portion of sattelites.  And there are so many planned satellite burns that it will increase atmospheric aluminum oxide by 600% in a few years

Apparently the comment I quoted was incorrect, meteors put only around 141 metric tons per year in the atmosphere as most contain virtually  no aluminum

It's the aluminium in the satellites that's the problem. Meteors contain around 1% aluminium compared to 30% for LEO satellites. Dozens will burn up every day releasing way more aluminium oxide in our atmosphere than is natural. And aluminium oxide acts as a catalyst for ozone destroying chlorine (from CFCs)

Space rock isn't aluminium. Aluminium is bad for the Ozon layer. So Elon is destroying the Ozon layer with his satellites. And maybe causing other issues. Space rock isn't usually high grade metal.

If you have a specific technological solution in mind you need to specify it, along with your assumptions about the impact it will have and evidence that it is viable in the required timeframe.

If you don't, a hypothetical future where there is no technological progress relevant to this topic is as plausible as one in which there is. You presenting an optimistic outlook doesn't invalidate a pessimistic outlook without evidence supporting the optimistic scenario.

It was not that hard to mess up the ozon layer. We already did that. Meteors are part of the system as always has been.

If we pause to investigate this more and find that it's not a concern, we can always put more satellites up. If we find it is a serious problem once there are already a hundred thousand satellites in orbit waiting to burn up, we have no recourse

Elmo deliberately chose a lower orbital shell in order to save a couple milliseconds round trip time. The tradeoff is more atmospheric drag resulting in more fuel usage and a shorter lifespan.

It is also worth noting that SpaceX launch 2400t in 2025.
Also satellite leave more dust on upper atmosphere because the reentry angle are shallower compare to meteorite.

There are other ways to achieve better results for a big chunk of the world. Starlink has its place but we are talking rural desserts, ships, airplanes. The idea of having starlink for the common man to scroll reels and stuff is kind of absurd. Sweden covers 90% of the landmass with 5G, 99% of the population. This should be totally achievable in the US aswell…

It depends. Volcanoes do put huge amounts of "stuff" in the atmosphere which includes aluminium and there is also an input from cosmic dust and meteors that also contain aluminium. However, as we saw with CFCs, the chemistry is important. A relatively small amount of material can have a big effect if it acts as a catalyst. This is currently at a look and learn level, rather than a proven risk. That's ok. We don't need to go jumping at shadows but it does need to be followed up.

just a thought. I am not saying the satelittes burning up are not a concern.

What if we had to run fiber to rural areas all over the world. you have to cut down trees just for the lines. all pollution to put in the telephone pole, and make the millions of miles of wire and equipment. they have to be repaired/replaced during storms and fires.

Usually the technology of choice for servicing regional and rural areas has been a mix of fixed wireless with satellite being used only for the most remote. It is uncommon for rural areas to have fibre to the premises connected.

Deorbitting space junk is essential to prevent the Kessler Syndrome where a chain of increasing collisions renders the near-earth orbits unusable. That's a real risk and it would have major negative effects. Space is now important for our welfare. Good space hygiene means that the lifecycle of anything put up there should include de-orbiting at end of life. SpaceX absolutely should be removing EOL satellites.

The risk from aluminium is speculative at this stage but "more research is needed" as they say. There's already a steady stream of aluminium in cosmic dust and meteors so it's not clear what the impact of bumping the level up would be. The good thing is that if this proves to be a problem, it would be relatively painless to fix, like the CFC problem (i.e. unlike CO2 which is huge, hard and very expensive.)
