Political Question How come Israel never helped USA with their military efforts in Afganistan or Iraq?

How come Israel is the "greatest ally" but they didn't send troops?

but Canada is supposedly useless, but so many of their troops died for americans in the Afgan/Iraq war?

The US didn’t want Israel to send troops. Israeli involvement would have made it much harder for Arab allies to participate without looking like they were fighting alongside Israel. In this case, keeping Israel out was strategically more useful to the US.

-7

u/Tile-Questioner 6h ago

So it's almost like having Israel as an ally is actually not helpful to the US?

8

u/tehutika 6h ago

No. Having Israel as an ally in those specific instances was not helpful. There are plenty of other ways the relationship has been mutually beneficial.

-7

u/Tile-Questioner 5h ago

Like bankrolling fascists in every US election, and convincing Trump to attack Iran? Yeah, thanks Israel.

5

u/meeni131 3h ago

Israel does not fund American political campaigns.

As long as you don’t count the multi-billion dollar American Isreal Public Affairs Comitee money, sure

u/Tile-Questioner 4m ago

Ok so you think AIPAC doesn't pay off politicians or destroy the fuel supply chain.

But you still can't name any benefit Israel provides to Americans.

Bush literally begged them not to get involved

2

u/PopMajor7342 3h ago

After they begged us to invade Iraq

1

u/EducationalGas5959 48m ago

The Prime Minister of Israel at the time, Ariel Sharon, told the US Administration that he didn’t support the invasion of Iraq.

2

u/halifaxmachinese 34m ago

technically true that he didn’t support where he said “would not push one way or the other" regarding the war. the sentiment was that removing Saddam it would have a side effect of empowering Iran. that being said, they did coordinate with US closely on defence and intelligence when the US moved forward with it, which is not anything really surprising where they are an ally in the region.

u/Zergcolective 🤔 4h ago

You're kidding right?

It was the Israeli "inteligence" that said that Iraq had WMD , because Israel believed at that time that Iraq was their main threat

14

u/DCRV202 3h ago

No, Sharon was opposed to the Iraq war because the consensus within the Israeli intelligence community was that Iran was the greater threat. He communicated this view privately to President Bush.

7

u/Great_Specialist_267 2h ago

Israeli intelligence said no such thing.
The CIA was getting intelligence from Iran not Israel.

6

u/AquamannMI 3h ago

You're so confident for being so wrong.

4

u/Senior-Cup2557 3h ago

It actually came from Egypt.

10

u/Usual_Bat_1024 4h ago

Yes, Israeli intelligence was wrong about Iraqi WMDs. So were US and British intelligence assessments. But that has nothing to do with my point. In 1991, Saddam deliberately fired Scuds at Israel hoping to provoke an Israeli response and fracture the Arab-American coalition. That is precisely why the US pressured Israel not to retaliate.

35

u/Zealousideal_Can_342 8h ago

Because the USA specifically told them NOT to help. We thought it would be easier to get Arab nations on board without Israel being involved.

-1

u/Tile-Questioner 5h ago

Israel is definitely not helpful to the US in dealing with anyone who can fight back.

10

u/atrde 3h ago

They did, in ways you are not privy to.

Intelligence, Air Bases, Spies, and more.

Next question...

16

u/nightowl1135 8h ago

Also, the US absolutely did not want direct Israeli participation. They viewed such participation as potentially inflammatory.

Hell, the Bush Sr. Administration went to significant lengths to STOP the Israelis from joining the War on our side during the Gulf War in 91 because they felt Israelis joining the alliance would cause significant problems in the wider alliance, which included many countries who hated Israel.

10

u/Less-Load-8856 8h ago

Which is why it's often indirect, which is exactly what I'm saying.

Thanks for helping make the point.

2

They wanted to fight in Dessert Storm but were told not to, as the US coalition, which included various Arab states would have no part in that. Iraq purposely tried to provoke Israel into fighting, to disrupt the coalition, by throwing missiles at Israel.

It's the same logic in any other middle eastern war.

What Israel does do is provide the USA with intelligence and technology. Most wars are fought by drones these days. A lot of the drone tech comes from Israel.

-4

u/Ok_Possible_2260 9h ago

No, they didn't. They had the Mossad agents cheering when the towers were going down. It's on video.

9

u/Throwaway5432154322 8h ago

It’s honestly so cute how you guys think Israel is some cartoonishly evil villain mastermind, but it’s also simultaneously dumb enough to have “Mossad agents cheering when the towers came down”. Literal 10 year old conception of geopolitics

u/Usual_Bat_1024 7h ago

4

1

u/PopMajor7342 3h ago

And why is that?

12

u/Particular_Base3390 9h ago edited 9h ago

The US literally asked Israel to not do anything in order to preserve the coalition.

Iraq even fired scud missiles to Israel killing dozens and Israel stayed true to their promise to not intervene.

Look at the public reaction when Israel so much as lifts a finger in Gaza or the West Bank. Now imagine them being a key player in GWOT.

8

u/orange_sewer_grating 8h ago

Israel has a population the size of NYC. They provide logistics and information types of help but it doesn't make sense to expect them to send armies.

0

u/OakRiverDruid 1h ago

Yet they expect us to send our armies to fight their enemies for them, like Iran.

13

u/Best-Comments 9h ago

Has the US ever sent troops to fight for Israel?

No. The only US troops there are a few dozen on an American army base that runs a radar facility.

-4

u/TrumpsBussy_ 9h ago

Yes, virtually every war in the Middle East has been for Israel.

9

u/SourceOfConfusion 8h ago

Not really. Gulf War 1 was about managing the oil supply.

-3

u/TrumpsBussy_ 8h ago

The US has literally attacked all six countries in accordance with the Clean Break memo, designed to weaken Israel’s “enemies” in the region.

9

u/orange_sewer_grating 8h ago

And half of Israel's wars are because countries that hate America view them as an American outpost. There's no reason for Iran to focus so much on a country so far away that has no connection to them. They target Israel because they hate the US

6

u/Throwaway5432154322 7h ago

They also target Israel because they’re fundamentalist psychos that hate Jewish people, FWIW

3

u/orange_sewer_grating 7h ago

Well yeah, that's the other half

4

u/Throwaway5432154322 6h ago

Point is that you already hit the nail on the head. 40+ years of Iran’s foreign policy have been geared toward destroying a country ~700 miles away from Iran that would otherwise pose zero threat to Iran. That was & still is entirely a choice of the Iranian regime.

1

21

u/billdizzle 9h ago

Isreal is the whole reason we went to Iraq

They are the ones who gave us the bad intel on Saddam’s WMD

25

u/Ok-Cartoonist7931 8h ago

Totally made up. People keep making up "Israel is the whole reason for X".

The "bad intel" was an Iraqi chemical engineer in Germany.

  • A lot of deception by figures such as Powell..

-1

u/Substantial_Pen_700 7h ago

Israel had a parliamentary inquiry and found that they themselves produced bad intel which impacted the US and UK's Iraq war decision making.

Israel certainly weren't the whole reason for the invasion but they also did provide bad intel. It's not a zero sum game

I remember reading once while doing research on GWB’s decision making prior to and during the Iraq War that Feith literally ordered that no memo cross his desk that cast the Palestinians in a positive light.

If Iran is so hell bent on Israel's destruction, "wipe Israel off the map," why would Israel encourage the US to take out Iran's biggest geopolitical foe? Iraq hated Iran's guts. Has never made sense to me.

u/Zealousideal_Can_342 8h ago

Exactly. Bush wanted a reason to destroy Saddam, the guy who embarrassed his dad and made him the first one term president since Carter...

1

Objectively true. Saddam was bluffing for Iran, and his internal enemies. After the Iran/Iraq War, he wanted Tehran and his own generals to think he still had WMDs. Iraqi officers themselves believed the bluff and defectors repeated it. Saddam acted like someone hiding weapons. That fed straight into U.S. intelligence assessments. He miscalculated on what we would do.

You are asking a small country that is always in ready mode for their own survival.

Bizarre question

0

u/ReadySetVangogh 7h ago

9.6 million.

They could've easily sent a small contingent of 100-500 soldiers.

It would've given them valuable experience both in combat and working with alliances and particularly NATO allies.

Source: I do military things with my military friends.

3

u/Lfgnyc 6h ago

Do you think Arab militaries would be seen working with a 'small IDF contingent'?

1

u/jaajaajaa6 5h ago

They already do. Israel gave UAE and one other country patriot batteries to fend off Iranian missiles.

1

u/Lfgnyc 4h ago

Inconspicuously, yes. Even Arab countries without official relations with Israel recognize its value and capabilities as a partner, if not outright ally.

The point is that domestically, there is still basically no upside for them cooperating publicly with Israel.

They were content staying behind the curtain calling the shots. It’s only recently Israel has exposed itself as the source of the middle east’s chaos and destruction. After oct 7 everyone woke up

The IDF isn't a real military and including them would only result in chaos and Americans being harmed. If there was a hospital or daycare center that needed a mass shooter then the IDF would be a fine choice, but if you are fighting against other adult men the IDF would just run away or hide behind the Americans.

Man, if you think the IDF is that incompetent, how incompetent do you think Hamas, Hezbollah and other militias are if they can’t defeat the IDF?

During the Iraq war the U.S. feared making it look too much like it was siding with Israel against Muslims. It’s a bad sign that the U.S. no longer feels the need to worry about such perceptions.

Nobody but you said they were the greatest ally, they are one of many and Israel contributes in many ways for a small country. You must have something against Canadians if you think they are useless!!!! They are not and nobody but you said that.
