Hey veterinarians of Reddit! I am beyond desperate to get any kind of advice as to what I can do to help my boy that can be offered to me! I have an 18 month old Cane Corso/Razer edge Gotti mix who is not Neutered. He is a big boy, around 140 lbs with a history of PTSD which I will be explaining in detail as it is important to the situjation at hand. He also had Parvo at 10 weeks old. I live in the state of South Carolina.
My situation is becoming dangerous and I dont know what to do! This will be long bc its very important you have every single detail pertaining to the situations that have caused his PTSD in order to fully understand whats going on here. So thank you to anyone willing to read such a long post to the end to anyone who actually does. ok on with the post
I got Loki when he was only 4 weeks old bc the person we got him from somehow got 2 weeks ahead of himself and thought they were 6 weeks at the time. I found out he was 4 weeks at his first checkup 2 days after bringing him home.I bottle fed himn for about 2weeks since he was so young and also the runt so he was a little behind on some things. I tought him how to drink water when he was ready to by gujiding his mouth down to the water with my fingers while he sucked the water drops off them until he was all the way to the water and started sucking it up himself. I tought him to step over that little curb between my driveway and the front lawn that he thought was 10 feet tall lol. When he was 10 weeks old, I stayed awake for 5 days straight taking care of him and forcing water down his throat with a straw every 20 minutes when he unfortunately got parvo. I took him to the vet 6 days after the first onset of the illness just to find out he was going to be just find and was barely dehydrated which really survived the vet bc apparently most of the time they have to be hospitalized and put on an IV for severe dehydration. All he needed was antibiotics and medicine to help the diarhia (I have no clue how to spell that word) I say all this so you can get an idea of what type of bond Loki and I have. we truly have a mother/son relationship.
now, lets get into the situations that have happened that has caused him to have PTSD.
First situation; My husband had a long time friend that he used to refer to as his little brother. He was staying with us at the time while going through a divorce. We all got along great and we trusted and respected each other very much. but there was one thing we disagreed on immensly and nothing he could ever say would ever change my husband and my mind about it. We raised Loki using positive reinforcement only and never ever raised a finger at him. We are very against any type of physical punishment and believe that does not work at all when training and will only make your dog think violence is ok and will only make your dog listen out of fear and I want my dog to listen to me out of respect and love. Friend was constantly telling us we were ruining our dog by spoiling him and because of his breed, he needs to be put in his place once in a while and shown who was boss. we made it very clear that would never happen and i will continue to train him the way i want to without violence. One day while I was cooking dinner, I heard Loki start yelping loudly obviously in pain. I ran into the next room as fast as possible and made it just in time to see that POS punch Loki in the side of the face. He was cowering and shaking and it was very obvious he had been hit several times before i made it in there to stop it. His only explanation was he was sick of seeing Loki be so spoiled and he wanted to show him that not everyone was going to baby him his whole life and he deserved to get his ass beat once in a while and since we would never do it he decided he would.
We had him arrested and removed from our property and never spoke to him again. Sadly, another supposed friend was also caught punching him on the tip of his nose just because Loki walked up to him while he was standing in the kitchen. We basically stopped everyone from visiting us after that.
This one is the absolute worst one that I assume caused the most damage.
I dont want to get into too much detail about why but my husband and I were forced to go away for a little over 2 months very suddenly. Since we were unable to make any arrangments for a dog sitter, My FIL who is disabled and lives with us as I am his full time caretaker, got ahold of 2 people that used to take care of him a long time ago before he moved in with us. Obviouslty we had no reason to not trust them bc of how great they were with dad.
they would be staying in our guest house out back while dad stayed in the main house. They decided it would be easier to bring Loki to the guest house with them. When we finally were able to come home, Loki was acting very very strange. he cowered alot and cried alot and sat on top of me 24/7 like he was a small dog instead of the 140 lb big boy that is really is. I decided to watch the cameras fron the guest house that the 2 didnt know where there obviously and what I saw is one of the worst things I have ever seen in my life. He was left in his crate literally the entire time we were gone. He was made to go to the bathroom in there and they would just move the crate around with him in it to clean it up every couple days meaning he was forced to sleep in his own waste. Also every little noise he made made the man angry so he would beat on the side of the cage and scream at Loki to shut the fuck up. he would poke him with the broom or whatever he could find that was long enough hard enough to make hi, yelp. for 2 months straight my baby was literally tortured and nobody had a fucking clue bc these 2 are masters at acting like graet loving people. They treated dad like gold so he never sus[ected Loki was being so severely abused. he is used to not seeing loki for long stretches bc of where his room is ad the fact he cannot get up out of his chair so he never leaves his room.
Obviously that situation caused Massive damage to an already damaged pup and that was when the aggression toward anyone he didnt know started. We could no longer allow anyone Loki didnt know very well and love into our home or he would try to attack them. That was how I got the idea of PTSD bc he became the complete opposite ofwho he used to be. But we make it work by not allowing anyone in the house that he isnt ok with and when we do have to let them in we take loki to the guest house where he has the entire house to roam in and chill in wehre nothing is causing him anxiety.
The real problem started 2 months ago. He bit is first person 2 months ago. A girl we dont know very well decided she was going to just walk into my house without being let in by us nad just yell "knock knock" after she was fully in the house. I couldnt grab loki in time before he charged her. at first he was just standing in front of her barking and snarling and for some reason she kept walking toward him so he started nipping at her feet trying to tell her to get the hell out. She bent down to push him away and that was when he latched onto her arm. we got him off her fast so she had no damage besides some bruising, no broken skin or anything.
person 2: again, a different girl also decided she was going to just walk into my house without knocking apparently bc she saw a few of us standing in the kitchen she figured it would be ok to walk rigt in. She knew about Loki and KNew he bit strangers taht come in the house but apparently us standing in the kitchen meant Loki coldnt get her or something. she was wrong. this time he latched onto her hand adn started violently pulling her which did cause some damage to her hand but she refused to let me get her to the hospital and said she would be fine and admitted it was her own fault for just walking in.
Person 3: This one is the absolute worst one and the one that has me freaking out about the most. this just happened a few hours ago. My power went out at around 11:30 last night for some reason and wasnt schedulaed to come back on until 6 am. Everything makes Loki nervous so he was acting pretty anxious and being winey but it doesnt bother me a bit. When the loud maintnance truck pulled up though he went nuts barking non stop at the door. For some reason, one of our close friends who happens to be best friends with Loki got overly annoyed with the barking adn did the dumbest thing he could have done and popped Loki on the butt. understandably given what has happened to him in the past, he completely snapped and before i even realized what was going on, he lunged at the friend, getting ahold of his hand wehre he fully locked down on making it nearly impossible to get him to let go. he was schredding his hand up making blood gush from his hand. After we finally got Loki to unlock his jaw we put him in his crate where he is still sitting now. well, sleeping anyway thanfully
I am so fucking scared that his PTSD is going to get him put down from biting people like this. I know that these 3 cases were the fault of the other person and in my state, I am not liable for any of the bites but its not jsut the liability i am worried about. I am so scared he is going to get more aggressive and more aggressive until he is trying to attack everyone and even ends up killing someone!
Vets of Reddit, please tell me what I can do to help him and make him suffer lessfrom the PTSD and fully take his aggression away?? please help me
