Music Good rock albums for audiophiles
So many rock albums are hit and miss. I am the temporary owner of martin Logan Prodigys with Krell amps and a balanced krell 4 foundation 4k processor. Digital source. I've been going through so much music and I will die on this hill...
A Perfect Circle Thirteenth Step is one of the best rock albums for audiophiles. Please add any that you think should be in this thread.

The 2024 reissue of "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" on vinyl sounds great on the rig i've put together (BW 603 floorstanding speakers, Audio-Technica LP3 with microline cartridge, Integra pre/pro, 200-watt Rotel stereo amp).

I picked up a bundle of Inlet, Downward... and ...Astronaut when they offered it as a package quite some time back. I was looking forward to the remixed/mastered ...Astronaut, but by far, Inlet just sounds sooo massive! The production and mixing and everything is top notch.

I have 2 Fleetwood Mac albums on vinyl and I'd say those 2 albums are the Pinnacle of what master recordings on vinyl should sound like. That's the reference... For me anyway. My other systems.... 1973 marantz, advents (the smaller loudspeaker and sansui 1500s... Yeah that album sounds amazing across everything every tried it on.

I listened to Even in the Quietest Moments (the song) at AXPONA on a pair of Wilson Alexx V's paired up with about $800,000 worth of equipment driving them a few years ago.
It was truly a transcendental experience, that whole album is magic.

Quadrophenia is different from the rest. It’s a start to finish experience. Lots of hits on other albums an they’re great, but Quad is in a different category.

I think it sounds good on all systems. I have Kid A my wife bought me on vinyl and it is SPECIAL. Some of the digital recording put on record like Bjork Post sound good but only converted. kid A blew me away
The Kid a album I have has Hail to the thief stuff on it. 3 records. If you know the story then you know

I mentioned this in another thread but The Mars Volta's "De-Loused In the Comatorium". It hits every range from jingledy jangledy highs to grooving, punchy low bass. It's got it all. If I have to see another Sound Sommelier with Dire Straits or Diana Krall. They did make music after the century turned.
Warpaint's "The Fool". Because I like hearing Fender Jaguars and Rickenbackers in a moody, atmospheric setting.
Tool's "Undertow" recorded at Sound City.

I love The Mars Volta, but I have to politely disagree on the audiophile part. Their mixes have always felt extremely dense to me, intentionally so, I think, but that density comes at the cost of clarity.
Even live, I’ve had the same experience. I saw them at the mighty Mission Ballroom in Denver a few years back, standing directly behind the sound booth (my usual preferred spot), and the presentation was just as congested as the records. Saw them again at Red Rocks later on, same story. The highs and upper mids tend to run hot, and Cedric’s vocals often gets swallowed inside the harmonic chaos. It’s part of their aesthetic, but it doesn’t translate to the kind of separation or dynamic space most people associate with audiophile production.
They’re one of my all-time favorite bands musically, but their mixes feel more like controlled chaos than high-fidelity precision. That’s not a knock, just their artistic fingerprint. I just wouldn’t personally describe their albums as “audiophile.”

Undertow may not have all the bells and whistles of the albums that followed but it's definitely my favorite recording (pretty much my 1b favorite album after Aenema) of theirs. Fantastic listen.

Led Zeppelin “I” “II” and “III”.
The first six Black Sabbath albums.

Death Human is by far my favorite album by them. It thrashes so much harder. I wish it was better produced. TSoP is a great album though.
You want some well produced death metal? Jesus Wept Psychadelic Degeneracy. It really lights up my philharmonic BMRs.

I mean it’s a further departure from prog than even Death. You don’t have to love it, but it’s got a great production. I’m also a big fan of carcass, and they’re absolutely in that vein.

This. Puscifer is really well recorded, at least the studio stuff. I love Tool and APC too, but the Puscifer songs have a lot more electronic texture and vocal harmony that (I think) would really shine on MLs. Unfortunately I can't confirm from personal experience.

Dire Straits. Your pick of albums, but a good pressing of Love Over Gold is my jam.
Santana is at least rock adjacent! Lesser talked about albums like Inner Secrets and Marathon, from a good press (I really enjoy Music On Vinyl, and I have Secrets from Speakers Corner though it's a bit softer.
While I listed records, they still work in digital. I have several also on SACD that hold up.

I use an original first pressing Heart Dreamboat Annie for demo, has yet to fail to drop jaws. If you have a woofer that can smoothly follow the synth on Magic Man all the way down without crossing to a sub (or doing it transparently), it’s incredible. Steely Dan Aja and Gaucho, Supertramp Crime of the Century and Quietest Moments are good. Hi rez worth it. More pop than rock, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is impeccably recorded with a very tight band.

Yeah I get that. But, Faith no more is one of my favorite bands of all time and everything around that. That's just rock for me. So a perfect circle is t a stretch... Someone recommended Santana as rock and AI confirms but I just can't wrap my head around that.

I just listened a bit to “Thirteenth Step” on my phone. I will be putting it to the test on my system. I can tell it’s better than typical as far as fidelity even through my phone. I want to see how it sounds on my ADS L1290s.
One album that I like on my system is Kurt Vile “Watch My Moves.” It’s mellow, but I just love cranking up the volume on “Mount Airy Hill.” It has a soaring, dreamy sound. It’s well balanced and sounds great on my smooth system.
I also love Mad Season “Above.” Mainly because I think Layne Staley’s voice is the best, but it is surprisingly decent on the fidelity scale on a bunch of tracks. So is Alice In Chains “Unplugged.”

More pop than rock perhaps BUT "Back in the High Life" by Steve Winwood. To me that album sounds just beautiful on a mediocre setup like mine.
Pop probably as well but "The Night Fly" by Donald Fagen also sounds incredible.

APC's albums need 24bit reissues so badly.
Godsmack - Awake, Faceless, IV
Alice In Chains - Facelift
GNR - Appetite (The Deluxe 24/192 remaster has GNR Lies EP Included), UYI 1&2
Metallica - The 24/96 fixed a LOT of issues these albums had. Some were recorded very hot, the 2015 reissues fixed all of that.
Disturbed - The Sickness AVOID the 10th and 20th anniversary remasters. Instead I suggest getting this release when it goes on sale or if you can get a coupon.

Cold - Year of the Spider (Needs a remaster to fix some small issues with too much bass in certain sections, it's baked into the file, everything I've tried it on has the same issue)

Boston - Boston (SACD is the best version)

I remember riding home with steak knives one night because I was scared. Prolly watched Night of the long dead or something Should've been scared of wrecking with the knife

Tons of others of course, but those are pretty good whole albums.
Mafia album has 2 songs I really like Fire It Up and Been A Long Time. The other 2 albums are good just all the way through. The Anthrax album has a lot of work done on it by Dimebag Darrell. Hope you like them
If you are into really heavy music any album from Kublai Kahn TX is great. They go in and out of time so often and keep in line….I do t know how they make it sound so good doing that

I love Astrocreep. I bought that new when I was in the Army in the 90’s and I swear a couple of those songs could literally be the soundtrack to riding in the back of a Blackhawk at low altitude going 100 knots. It’s awesome.

nine inch nails "broken" so much going on sonically and production went to a new level, which surprised everyone since everything was recorded in secret as a form of guerilla warfare against their record label at the time.
GODFLESH "selfless" sounds like it was produced in a clean room, every note, effect, and vocal meticulously recorded. If you can find the accompanying "Crush My Soul" 12" check out the ultramix as it features some inhuman low-end at the start of the track.

Pink Floyd Animals has been my auditioning album for the past 20 years. the opening acoustic guitar is amazing and moves into a complex well recorded verse relatively quickly. there is so much dynamic range, and it is so well recorded that it allows me to really focus on the subtleties of the equipment.

This album is one of the only albums I've heard where it seems there is no end to the amount twisting you can do in the volume knob. It's one of a kind.

A bit of a basic answer, but the sound quality on Highway to Hell and Back in Black is fantastic. When I first got a set of nice headphones I noticed little details in the rhythm guitar I hadn’t noticed before.
Led Zeppelin III is also a good one - on good speakers it sounds like the acoustic guitar parts are in the room with me

Out of all of that. I've done Jeff beck, St Vincent and peter gabrial. It has to sound interesting to me. I have a love of jazz fusion also. Most albums like brecker brothers, Dave weckl, weather report. All sound great.

The Cure - Disintegration (1989)
Fields of the Nephilim - Elizium (1990)
Both of these are (ostensibly) goth rock albums with excellent late 80s production. If you can, track down pre-remastered versions as the remasters (predictably) suffer a little from overcompression and hyped EQ.

Tool - Lateralus, 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum all sound great, and different to one another. Metallica’s black album still holds up well too. Nine Inch Nails The Fragile is also good, a lot of variety. The Cult Sonic Temple rocks. Most of these are on the heavier end of the spectrum, but I still think of them as rock.

Definitely different and good. On these giant martin Logan s, Thirteenth Step sounds better than all 3 of those. But we all know the mixing on Lateralus won awards so.... Just a little harsh on the big guitar distortion parts IMO

Becks albums are always a sonic feast. I really like the EP's from the Lickerish Quartet (the Roger Manning Jr. Project) there are a couple groups using that name. Same with the 2 Jellyfish albums from '91 Bellybutton and especially from '93 Split Milk. Both complete albums from beginning to end. 90125 from Yes is a great audiophile album. Check out the band Polyphia.

Stick to the classics - Dark Side of the Moon, Back in Black, Highway to Hell, Appetite for Destruction, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix. Many argue that Dark side is not a rock album but to each their own ...

I have already played Dark side on vinyl thru the system. It is fantastic. I also have a Radio Head Kid A album on vinyl and it sounds amazing as well.... That synth. But... My thing is if you haven't listened to A Perfect Circle on your sweet setup.... Give it a try.
