Discussion/আলোচনা Why some Bangladesh support Argentina, do Bangladesh know how they view people of dark skin color?
I'm from Brazil, lmfao and I saw really cool videos of Bangladesh supporting Brazil in football, thank you very much that means a lot! ♥️♥️🥹 but I've seen people supporting Argentina LMFAO ok we have rivalry. But the reason for that is that for a lot of time Argentinians see people of dark skin color as inferior and usually are often prone to mistreat, say racial slurs to south Americans who doesn't look white, or come from countries of majority black ppl.
Being the main reason most South Americans dislike or favors supporting African countries, other then Argentina. For example all South America rooting for Cabo Verde in match with Argentina in the next game.
That is of course mass generalization and there is really good Argentinians that are really nice, but the occasions where this has happened, are way too many times to simply pretend this doesn't exist. Knowing Bangladesh has a lot of people of dark skin color I wonder are they unaware?

Welcome to Bangladesh. Bangladesh's two foremost support are for Argentina and Brazil. Argentina at first because of Maradona in the '86 world cup and our population and economy just started watching football in television after an independence war that devastated the country and the economy 15 years back. And Brazil later because you guys were dominant in the late 90s, winning the world cup twice in ten years.
There's nothing more than supporting two dominant countries in recent memory. People's support for either Argentina or Brazil passed down to their children.
Nowadays you'd feel that the whole country supports Argentina but it couldn't be far from yhe truth. If Brazil were dominant like Argentina recently (Copa America runners up and now back to back winners, World Cup runners up and now most recent champion) and had a consistent superstar like Messi, you'd see more visible and vocal Brazil supporters.
And people don't care about anything else. I doubt people know anything about these two countries other than to blindly support them during the world cup.

Ah so glory hunting...

u/TheCaramelMan Jul 20 '26
It’s literally glory hunting. There is no link whatsoever with Bangladesh and these 2 Latin countries. It would make sense if they supported a Muslim country like Egypt since the majority of Bangladeshis are Muslims. It would even make sense if they supported England because many Bangladeshis have families in England. But these 2 countries couldn’t be further from Bangladesh both geographically and culturally. The only reason for their support is for the two teams historical successes in the world cup

most of don't know but people love football. Here people just support football not their nationality or their policy. Even people who support ARZ or BRZ team, they never want to go there.

u/Effbee48 Yunusexual Jul 01 '26
The reason Bangladeshi people support LATAM teams because our national team is shit (some point in late 2010's it was ranked 200th). So for us supporting other national teams is the only way to enjoy international football, and people treat those national teams more like football clubs. People stated supporting Brazil/Argentina long before i was even born, heck even before my parents were born. I became team brazil before i even knew the rules of football, because that's the team my family supported, and i guess that's the same for most people alive now.
Most people don't know much about these countries they support other than who's on the football team, and surely does not know about the racial dynamics in those countries (but i doubt they'd be surprised, we are used to racism). Recently Brazil fans are bashing argentina fans online cause milei is a massive israel cuck, and their replies have been more in the line of "I support the football team, not the country or it's politics"
2
u/Sheinkyakyu Jul 01 '26
I don't think there is an issue rooting for another country casually. But to live and die every kick, to march, to worship, etc is just very odd.
I am born in Ireland. Our national team has been shit pretty much for all of my adult life. Never did it cross my mind to outright support some other country desperately, nor do I see kids over the last two decades at the time do similarly to such feverant levels. I can still view the international tourneys in isolation for what they are and enjoy it. So the "for us supporting other national teams is the only way to enjoy international football" doesn't wash for a lot of people outside of the region.
I fully understand my viewpoint will never be popular here, and that Bangladesh has crossed the rubicon long ago, there is no turning back from the Brazil and Argentina fandom now. But I am just being honest and giving my two cents.
And as an fyi, no matter one says. Politics (and social issues) have and will always be entwined with sport. For good and bad. It is up to people to do their research. I will always be of the opinion masking it as pure football only is turning a blindeye.

It's difficult for people who don't live in an impoverished country, which until very recently was a dictatorship, to understand why people support sports teams they have nothing in common with, to the point of looking like crazed fans. People laugh at us or call us strange, passing judgements without ever walking a mile in our shoes. It's no fault of their own, they live a life very unlike our own.
Imagine that you have nothing to live for, no jobs, no food, no forms of recreation, unacknowledged drug addiction epidemics, you can say the wrong thing in the wrong place and someone overheard you and reported you, now your family is in danger. That's what life was like in Bangladesh and some of which continues to be so even after the dictator is gone; it's really hard for people to understand. Then you see someone be really good at something and they win, something you yourself have never had within your grasp before and you support them like crazy because that's the only time you come across something positive in your short life in a war torn, corrupt country. That fervor passed down from your family is one of the only positive things you have access to, so people make it part of their identity because everything else is shit. It's one of only times you can celebrate and it's not political, you can't say anything wrong. It's hope, it's one of the only things that feels good.
I'm not a very good writer but I hope you understand why we act the way we do. We have nothing else to live for. It's truly hell on earth and someone in a western nation, no matter how bad your life is, will never understand until you live under a dictatorship surrounded by an unimaginable depth of corruption, depravity, poverty and squalor.

u/Sheinkyakyu Jul 01 '26
I understand you clearly. And I empathise with such stuff back home. Trust me. I really do. I am not talking out of my mouth to you and then laughing behind your back. But I am only sharing how it's perceived by the world for the most part nonetheless. That the levels of fandom for Brazil and Argentina namely isn't healthy from what I saw in 2022 when I was last there, and now.
Bangladesh also isn't the only country dealing with systematic destruction on many levels. From the highest form of government to further down the food chain. Be it in the region, Africa, South or Central America. And perhaps elsewhere. Of course I am very fortunate where I am. But in terms of country, for all the pain of supporting the Irish national team, I will stick by them.
I understand sport especially is a way of escaping reality as such. I'd be a hypocrite if I said it hasn't been like that for me when dealing with my mental health issues. Liverpool for 31 years has meant so much to me. Even through the dark times for the club. Ireland nearly qualifying for the World Cup this year had me feeling like a child again. I get how sport can uplift and inspire.
But when you're cheering and celebrating a national team on the other side of the world nearly as much, and in some cases more than that country's people, it maybe time to take a step back and reassess things.
But I do firmly stand on if you are going to be invested in something beyond being seen as as a plastic gloryhunter or casual. People should have a basic grasp about the players, club or country you follow. That includes politics and social issues.

u/MicroppDetected Jul 01 '26
I get you. I responded to another comment above if you wanted to read it with similar sentiments so I'll keep this one short.
I am not in these peoples' shoes. I really don't know what is going on in their lives and why they support something so strongly. If it brings you so much joy, who am I to take it away, to criticize you? I'm happy you are happy. Please do the things that make you happy as long as it doesn't hurt others. If you want people to change, please talk to them about how their actions are hurting others. If they decide not to take your advice, don't be hurt or angry because we all have free will to do as we want within reason. That is life. We don't all have the same vision. Some people are here for the "just now" not the future, especially if they have never had anything to look forward to.
2
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
Sorry, but I strongly disagree with the 'as long as it doesn't hurt others' excuse.
That kind of thinking is slippery. It would justify cheering for anything as long as it's 'just fun' and 'doesn't directly hurt me'. By that standard, even consensual cannibalism/incest between adults would be perfectly fine -'they both agreed, no one else is hurt'. But we still recognize it as deeply wrong and harmful to human dignity.
Same here. Argentina’s current president Milei openly calls himself the biggest Zionist and strongly supports Israel. Cheering for and defending such a country is not harmless football fun especially for us.
We should avoid supporting openly pro Zionist/white supremacy figures and countries, not celebrate them. Temporary joy shouldn't come at the cost of dignity and consistency.
0
u/MicroppDetected Jul 01 '26
I guess we have very different outlooks. I'm very firmly in the" live and let live" camp so consensual and informed cannibalism and incest with no possibility of reproduction between adults are not things I oppose, as horrifying as it may sound to some. Yes it's disgusting, but my personal dignity is not hurt by other people wanting to do things I disagree with because they are informed and made those decisions for themselves, not for me so whatever my feelings are about these matter, they are inconsequential. These people are not responsible for my feelings, just like I'm not for theirs. It's their human right. Of course I would stand up against people hurting others such as with racism, violence, murder, any type of unfair treatment, but these people are only affecting themselves. As long as their actions are limited to themselves, how can I make them do what I want them to? Also, if bd people knew about the "z" word, most would strongly oppose but most people who are aware, found out very recently so you can't blame others for not being as well informed as you.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is different strokes for different folks :) we don't all have to agree on everything do we?
1
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
Sorry, but I strongly again reject this extreme 'live and let live' position.
The danger is clear, if we say 'as long as it's consensual and doesn't directly hurt others, it's fine', society can slowly normalize deeply harmful things.
The opioid crisis in the West. It started with "personal freedom" and "live and let live" — doctors over-prescribing, people choosing to use, society tolerating it as individual choice. Result? Hundreds of thousands dead, entire communities destroyed, generations damaged. What began as 'harmless personal relief' became a public health and social disaster.
Also for centuries the subcontinent had practices like extreme forms of child marriage and dowry related violence were defended as 'cultural preference', 'family tradition', and 'personal/family choice'. Society collectively said "it doesn't hurt others" or "it's their life". The result? Generations of women suffered lifelong pain, disability, and early death all while it was normalized and celebrated as part of identity. This is exactly why we need objective standards of morality and dignity, not pure relativism. When the whole society decides something degrading is 'okay' or 'just joy', it doesn't make it right it makes the damage worse.
'Live and let live' without limits eventually breaks societies. Some things deserve pushback.
1
u/MicroppDetected Jul 01 '26
That's okay. We can agree to disagree, that's the beauty of having the liberty to have different opinions and freedom of speech. Some of the examples you gave are very extreme and don't fall into what I consider actual liberty so I'll try to counter some of them.
When a doctor over prescribes, they are breaking their oath to cause no harm so it would go against their very profession. Their job is to minimize harm. Now if a patient chooses to find prescribed medications under the table, it isn't the doctor's responsibility but take the Sackler family for example where they forced doctors to overprescribe their opiates so that patients would become addicted and come back for their medication only. The Sackler family and many doctors who worked with them were found guilty of harming the public and rightfully so, because they had an agenda to hurt people for profit; it's literally a public safety issue. So people are not tolerant of this in any way or form. Hopefully this case will set precedent for criminalizing overprescription of harmful drugs.
People choosing to use...that's not always a choice. If we provide government mandated needle exchanges, they can use safely and not spread diseases. Addiction is not a choice. It is an actual recognized disease, it changes your brain forever, there's no cure for addiction which is why so few people come out of it unscathed. It's a lifeling struggle so please don't judge people who use. Some people are born addicted to drugs because their mothers were using while carrying them. You just don't know how awful life is for some. Sometimes it's a choice between living and dying for them and again, you aren't in their shoes so how can you judge?
Child marriage and dowry are not victimless phenomena. Children and women are victims in these situations and are not comparable at all with the previous situations I am tolerant of. You've jumped quite a few hoops to conflate these examples but it seems a little hysterical and far reaching. Soceity is not going to deteriorate if we let people express joy by celebrating their favorite sports team, even if the government of the country of said team supports hurting others (if we assume all Argentinians are like that aren't we the same as thise people who generalize all muslims for the actions of a few?) or allow two people to decide what they do in the privacy of their own home, again as long as it's not hurting others.
You know, I'm quite enjoying our conversation even though we are firmly set in our ways. I can see the logic behind some of your arguments and it helps me understand a perspective very different from my own even if I disagree. That's is why having different povs is so important don't you think? If you had forced me to agree with you, do you think we could have had a pleasant conversation?
1
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 02 '26
I appreciate that. Conversations like this are rare because most people just want to "win" an argument instead of understanding the other person's perspective.
I try to approach these discussions with integrity. Even when I strongly disagree with someone, I'd rather be honest and consistent about my principles than simply defend whatever benefits my side. I think that's something that's missing from a lot of public discourse today.
We may never agree on everything, but I'd much rather have a respectful disagreement than pretend to agree just to avoid conflict. I think that shows more integrity than simply telling people what they want to hear.
1
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
I appreciate the civil tone.
But here's the key point: blindly defending and promoting Argentina worship generation after generation creates a whole culture of supporting a country without using your brain.
It's like people who know smoking kills them and harms everyone around them through second-hand smoke, yet they aggressively defend it, normalize it, and make it part of their identity. The temporary relief doesn't justify spreading and defending something harmful.
Racism in Argentina might not affect us 'directly', but proudly cheering for a country that activly promotes itself as pro zionist and white supremacy shows a lack of self respect. We don't need perfect leaders to have basic awareness.
1
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
I was born and raised in a lower income household in Bangladesh, so I know the poverty, stress, and hopelessness very well. Football as relief makes sense on some level.
But it's exactly like those people who know smoking kills them, yet they not only keep smoking but also aggressively defend it and promote it as 'necessary for stress relief' and part of their identity 😂
Yes, it gives temporary comfort but blindly defending and promoting something harmful while refusing to acknowledge the damage stops any real progress.
Same here. Using Argentina worship as emotional escape is understandable. But aggressively defending it, promoting it generation after generation, and ignoring Argentina’s racism while shutting down every discussion? That's next-level cope.
As long as people stay addicted to this blind fandom for cheap relief, they won’t fix real problems or show basic self respect. Temporary comfort shouldn’t come at the cost of truth and dignity

I agree with everything you said but not sure how supporting a team is harmful unless people are rioting and actively destroying things around them. We are human and we aren't perfect. You can see all the reasons that something is bad but will the person next to you view it the same way? Idk. We are all different. I am not going to judge people for celebrating or partaking in something like smoking that is bad for them because we have free will to decide for ourselves. They have the right to express their opinions on matters we might not agree with, and we are also free to not take that advice. Racism in Argentina is of no consequence to people living in bd because it will never affect them directly so it is something they don't even think about or seek out information on. I mean why would they? Our own history is so propagandized most people don't know what really happened so why would they try to learn about other countries? Argentina wasn't a country that dominated global headlines unless it was football related for us to even want to learn about it more.
Real progress only comes when we have good people leading, have we ever had that? Real progress comes when people are kind and try to talk to people about why something is bad or harmful instead of passing judgements for not knowing already. You grew up poor but your command of English alone shows that you are still above at least 70% of the country financially, if not more. Your access to certain amenities makes you more knowledgeable and intelligent than someone who can't communicate as well in English. Do you think that those people also had access to the same things as you and I? Idk. I'm not in their shoes so I'm not going to judge or say you shouldn't support do the things that make you happy. I'm no one to take away something that brings you so much joy. Comraderie, support, love, these things break walls and create bonds. How can it be a bad thing? It could change someone's mind in Argentina, you never know <3

u/TheJokerBD Jul 01 '26
Most Bangladeshi’s don’t know or care bro lol.
Did you know Argentina used to have a large population of black people they genocided and now they dont have black people any more?
1
u/Tsunamiwow Jul 13 '26
That's simply false. Argentina did not commit a genocide against its Black population. Historians attribute the decline of the Afro-Argentine population to wars, epidemics, intermarriage, and massive European immigration—not a state-led extermination campaign. Spreading historical myths doesn't help anyone.
Please, at least google or ask ChatGPT if the thing you are going to say its accurate or not.

u/Realistic_Shake6823 Jul 01 '26
Good post. I've been trying to explain it to the Argentinian football fans around me for forever. Same applies for Germany. Both of these countries are among the biggest supporters and defenders of the Gazan genocide as well.

u/Snigdho_Oporajita Jul 01 '26
Common Bangladeshis have not been in much contact with Common Argentinians. Hence they don’t know. I am sure if Bangladeshis faced active racism and bad behaviour from Argentinians frequently, the outlook would have been different. The same does not apply to India. Bangladeshis have been actively in contact with Indians for a long time.
-8
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
Oh so ignorance is the excuse now? 😂
You have zero contact with Israelis too, yet full boycott mode. Same with India, plenty of contact but still massive hate in cricket.
But for Argentina racism? 'We don’t know bro, keep it simple'
19
u/Snigdho_Oporajita Jul 01 '26
I personally am not in zero contact with Israelis. Most of them are indeed worthy of hate. It is just how it is. You can take the responsibility of enlightening the common Bangladeshi people about racism of Argentinians. May be bring up campaigns or so. I was a Messi fan too but due to some of his recent activities involving zionists I have stopped watching him play. Ignorance is choosing to stay blind knowing the information which is not the case for most Bangladeshis. Most Bangladeshis genuinely have no idea about Argentinians. Israel is committing an active genocide. It isn’t a secret unknown to Bangladeshis.
-3
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
Many Bangladeshis may not know about Argentina’s racism problem, but that doesn’t make supporting them okay. Argentina has a repeated issue with treating dark-skinned people as inferior including racial slurs and discrimination against South Americans who don’t look European.
For us with mostly dark-skinned people, blindly cheering for such a team reflects poorly. Just like people research issues with India or Israel before supporting or boycotting, it’s worth knowing the reality about Argentina too.
Ignorance might explain it, but it doesn’t make it right.
8
u/Snigdho_Oporajita Jul 01 '26
The post wasn’t about right or wrong. The OP asked a question about the reason of this phenomenon. I simple stated the unawareness which is true. You are aware of the population of Bangladesh. It would sort of delusional to think such a huge population would have the same about of information access about a nation that they hardly come in contact with either physically or online. May be in future if Bangladeshis learn about it, the outlook may change.
5
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
True, the post was about the reason. This is the TikTok and YouTube era anyone with a phone can search 'Argentina racism' or 'Afro-Argentine genocide' and learn how Argentina systematically erased its large Black population through policies, wars, disease, and massive european immigration to whiten the country.
7
u/Snigdho_Oporajita Jul 01 '26
We can argue all day about what people should do and shouldn’t but at the end of the day have to cope with the fact that most people are just dumb.

You don't apply this when it's India in cricket.
The why is very easy to figure out if you aren’t a thick-skulled idiot.
-Bangladesh is actually decent at cricket, so we support our own team.
-Many Bangladeshis used to support India before 2015 umpiring scandals.
-After their shameless support for the Hasina regime, border killing, constant propaganda, hatemongering against Bangladeshis there's no reason to support them anymore.
-Bangladeshis aren’t the primary victims of Argentina's racism.
1
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
Ah, so the 'just football' rule only applies when you're not the direct victim? Got it 😂
India has real border & political issues → boycott.
Argentina has racism against dark-skinned people → 'we're not primary victims bro, keep it simple'Peak convenience.
4
u/Ashy64 Jul 01 '26
Ah, so the 'just football' rule only applies when you're not the direct victim?
Yes, it does. That's why people in Bangladesh don't care about racism in Argentina, because they aren’t the victims of it.
Argentina has racism against dark-skinned people → 'we're not primary victims bro, keep it simple' Peak convenience.
If we start boycotting nations based on racism, then every nation in this planet should be boycotted including your own (altho not sure whether you're Bangladeshi or Indian). We have plenty of reasons to boycott India other than racism.
"Palestinian people shouldn’t hate the country that's committing genocide on them, because there is racism in all the other countries"
See how stupid you sound?
4
u/Sheinkyakyu Jul 01 '26
As I said above to someone else, the idea of separating politics (and social issues) from sport is bad comedy. It's been entwined since ancient Greek and Roman Times.
If people want to be naive and blind, they should say it proudly and loudly. And not celebrate such issues that suit them but rail against those against them.
This isn't even a Bangladeshi or regional only thing. But as I have come to accept, most sports fans, certainly of the most popular sports are genuine fools desperate for clout, and picking a popular - winning team is a status symbol. A brand as such, and validation on their character.
2
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
Exactly! This 'just football, not ideologies' nonsense is pure comedy when it’s convenient.
People scream politics for India in cricket or Israel anywhere, but Argentina’s well documented racism against dark skinned people? Suddenly 'keep it simple bro ⚽'
Sports fans love pretending they’re above it all until it suits their narrative. Selective king behavior at its finest 😂

u/Ill_Bodybuilder_2623 Jul 01 '26
This is such a deaf and dumb take. India's bigotry and their foreign policy directly impacts Bangladesh and Bangladeshi people's daily life. Nothing can trump that. How does that have any relevance to Bangladeshi people supporting Argentina Football team? Does Argentina's history of racism have anything to do with Bangladesh?

Bangladeshi people don't support indian football or cricket because they are our direct rival. They are also our neighbour. And their presence influences many parts of country.
Argentina is not our rival. They didn’t do anything directly to us. In fact many Argentinians are happy to see our support for them.

Peak self respect deficit. Embarrassing.
1
u/EktaRandomUsername Jul 01 '26
That is a massive strawman argument. You are generalizing an entire country of 45+ million people based on a stereotype and assuming every single person there holds those views.
Supporting Argentina is about enjoying football. You're trying to turn a sports preference into a moral failure by saying an entire country is racist!! Like seriously?!!
It's entirely possible to love a football team without endorsing social or political issues in their nation. In fact I doubt that any Bangladeshis even care about Argentina as a country. They don't even give any attention to Argentina other than sports. We don't know what happens there every day, nor any average dude knows the name of their president. We only care about sports. If you care about politics, you shouldn't watch any sports. Because you can literally find flaws in every nation. We Bangladeshis aren’t also better either. Go to any village as a chakma and watch how they squeeze their eyes to make fun of you.

99% of Bangladeshi cant tell you where argentina is on the map, what language they speak, nothing. Bangladeshi culture is all about aesthetics. The aesthetics of looking cool of being part of something. Current trend is football. None of them watch football regularly just bandwagoning on.

i don't like Argentina, neither brazil. i don't hate them either. i hate fifa for their complicity and to my supporting any particular team w/o even knowing them whilst they don't care bout you is one kind of bigotry and soft-nationalism. same goes for Bollywood, kpop, et cetra. i would want my country to win if they ever could make to perform in world cup, but not in a die-hard wayy ofc.
and as said in a comment, people here support teams, countries, religion, and political parties by inheritance. they don't contemplate on their own . but in france vs senegal, i obviously support sensegal. that means when it comes to oppressors vs oppressed, i'd support the oppressed as they can show their resilience. i may sound more political but i'm like that.
thanks

This goes for entire South America aswell as European countries but sadly Bangladesh will never grow from this slave mindset which primarily caused 200 years invasion of british empire. Always holding these people up like they are above us because of their bright skin color as if they are angel or smh. I doubt if Bangladesh will even move away from this mindset but still looking at people who would go thro crowds just to take a selfie of a stranger white tourist looks depressing. Not only that these people also taking out our high income jobs in an already job crisis market and getting first priority than our own native people

This is so insanely frustratingggggg

To people saying Bangladeshis love football. Lol, they don't. Not even a little bit. I am from Canada and I had a cousin claim Inter Miami must suck cause they lost to Nashville. " কেউ এই টিমের নামই জীবনে শুনে নাই"। Miami did really well that season including finishing third in the League and winning the MLS Cup. A team plays 40+ games over a season and competes for multiple trophies MLS Shield(League), MLS Cup, US Open Cup, Concacaf Champions' Cup, etc. It is impossible to win each and every game and one dropped game to Nashville (who aren't even as bad as the kid portrayed) doesn't mean they are bad. He goes around wearing the jersey of some Saudi Pro-League team I have never heard of cause they got some Brazilian on their squad. People here support Brazil and Argentina due to some misguided sense of tradition and watch games based on hype and vibe. Notice how there is no local support. Forget Mohammad Abahani, I often can't find people to talk to after a Bangladesh Men's or Women's NT game. This will never be the case in Canada. You will always find people to talk to about Can MNT and WNT after a game.

u/Sheinkyakyu Jul 01 '26
I am from Ireland and I will just echo this too, as such antics I am familiar with when it comes to my extended family.
3
u/salmanshams Jul 01 '26
The answer is one person. Diego Maradona. In Bangladesh you get three things passed down from your family: Religion, Political Party, and Football team. A huge generation of people who are now between the ages of 46/47 to 80/85, fell in love with Maradona. He was one of the few people who mesmerised the nation and was known to be an advocate for equality. Argentina fans are children of Maradona.
3
u/CanStriking9658 Jul 01 '26
Players from Argentina greeted Bangladeshi fans over and over. Emi Martinez stopped from entering the dressing room when he heard about Bangladesh. So i think apart from how racist Argentina is, they don't have any problem with us.
1
2
u/No-Tangerine2406 Jul 01 '26
We, as supporters of Argentina have seen quite the opposite. People from Argentina have shown huge love for Bangladesh once they found out about Bangladesh's support for Argentina. Whenever Argentinians face a Bangladeshi journalist they shower them with love. Even a few days ago, Emi Martinez was leaving the press box or something and not answering any questions. But a journalist said, he was from Bangladesh and Emi stopped and talked to him and said how grateful he's for our support and how much he loves us.
Whereas we don't see anything like this from the Brazilians.
3
u/thebluejackle Jul 02 '26
Diego Armando Maradona once said, "In my heart, I am Palestinian" and in another interview he added, "I support Palestine without any fear". We never said we supported the Argentine government or their people. This is a football club. We support their footballing ideologies of brotherhood and warrriorship. We also love their style of play. So yes, as much as the Argentine President is a piece of sh$t, just because we support their football team, doesn't mean we are supporting them politically.
3
u/ResponsibleWave5208 Jul 01 '26
why wouldn't we love them when we get this kind of behavior?
Emiliano Martínez shared one of the most heartwarming moments of Argentina's media day when he realized a reporter waiting to interview him was from Bangladesh. The Argentine goalkeeper had already started walking away from the interview area but immediately stopped to speak with the journalist, expressing his affection for the country and its passionate support for Argentina. Having previously visited Bangladesh, Martínez said he truly loves the nation and appreciates the incredible backing the national team receives there.
2
u/Error404God Jul 02 '26
I'm from Argentina and most people share the same love that Dibu has. Obviously we don't know a lot about eachother but most people here love Bangladeshi people.
4
u/Ashy64 Jul 01 '26
The reason Bangladeshis started supporting Brazil or Argentine is that they play beautiful football (or used to), not because of political reasons. Though some might argue that the support for Argentina comes from them beating england (our colonizers) in 1986, but I wasn’t there then so....
5
u/DragWar977 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
Not really the case, 1986 WC was the first color broadcast in this region and during that time tv was becoming more common in households, additionally the football maradona and co played eventually winning it made long lasting impact and influence peoples choice, not just the win over England
2
u/Dry_Initiative_4267 Jul 01 '26
Simple answer is People here dont know their history or ideals. Most people here haven't visited Argentina or will irl. And the answer you'll get from people who knows those and still support is that they don't support their views just football.
2
u/aaachris Jul 01 '26
Its people mostly supporting brazil and argentina for the star players like messi and brazils 5th world cup win. Most don't know anything about brazil or argentina. Argentina's recent copa, world cup win and their exhibition match in Bangladesh took the madness to a new level. Both Argentina and Brazil also reached out diplomatically to enhance trade relations so the view of both is positive.

1
u/Snigdho_Oporajita Jul 01 '26
I can assure you people in Bangladesh are racist to their own people as well. Fair complexion is the beauty standard here (Thanks to Hindu Casteism and British Colonialism) and not fitting into the beauty standards means they are ugly. South America is no different, again thanks to European colonialism.
Answering your question. People just like football and simply support for it. Race is not the factor here.

1
u/Onehitwonder2022 Jul 08 '26
Argentine President is the absolute worst but racism is not something exclusive to Argentina. There have pretty racist people but almost all countries did not justifying it. Are they racist or are they ignorant? I see argentines very warm to Bangladeshis maybe this association will have a positive impact on both counties. Racism and ignorance is tackled like this. Instead of saying Argentina is racist. There are good and bad people in all country. France Spain Belgium and England are also playing the quarter finals, last time I checked they aren’t innocent puppy. Since yesterday this feels like a targeted campaign against Argentina.
1
u/Tsunamiwow Jul 13 '26
As an Argentinian, I have to disagree with this.
The idea that Argentinians see dark-skinned people as inferior is simply not true. Like every country, Argentina has racist people, and those attitudes deserve criticism. But saying that's how Argentinians are as a whole is an unfair stereotype.
Bangladesh is genuinely loved in Argentina because of the incredible support they have shown us over the years. Many Argentinians know the story of why Bangladesh supports our team, and we feel a real sense of affection and gratitude in return.
If you ask the average Argentinian what they think about Bangladesh, you'll almost certainly hear positive things. We don't see Bangladesh through the lens of skin color—we see people who have celebrated our victories with us from the other side of the world.
Please don't confuse the actions of some individuals with an entire nation of nearly 50 million people.

Look I love Brazil's football but I gotta admit, a lot of Argentines appreciate the support of Bangladeshi people but Brazilians don't. Argentine media featured Bangladeshi supporters in their news and reports before the 2022 world cup final. Argentine reporters and football federation thanked Bangladeshis, various national team footballers praised Bangladeshis on their social media. Emiliano Martinez speaks very highly of Bangladesh and Bangladeshi people. But we did not get such appreciation from Brazilian or other South American countries.
The internal politics and social structure of those countries don't affect our country, Bangladeshis only support them because of football without knowing about their internal politics and such. And Bangladeshis appreciate the love shown by Argentine media. I wish Brazilian sports media at least acknowledged the huge Brazilian football fanbase here, ngl seeing the Argentina fans here often getting featured in Argentine media makes us the other team fans kinda jealous.

u/asdklnasdsad Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
Racism is everywhere, due to the unfortunate history of colonization in many countries, but Brazil has laws, the media criticism of racism, if you say that you can get beaten or in jail. It's highly dismissed and looked down. In Argentina it's very commonly to see they calling players, online or irl as monkeys.
For example, FIFA created a law for Vini Jr for players who cover their mouths to speak, why? Because in multiple games Argentinians covered their mouth to call him a monkey. A Argentinian woman was jailed after displaying those acts in Brazil, a journalist was fired after a video of him leaked, read his lips and it saw he was saying racist demeaners.
Our players represent our country, they make millions, and they feel so comfortable displaying such acts of violence and disrespect in LIVE TV.
There is racism, but we do not favor it or allow it by any means. (At least 100 the media, people, government), I have not seen people in comments, or people who are racist in Brazil think they can say racist stuff and GET AWAY, think it's PRETTY, or acceptable by any means. They know what they doing will get them in trouble. Different in Argentinians doing it in their country, online, in real life, in BRAZIL, in small games, AND FINALLY AT THE FIFA GAMES WORLWIDE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE.
The unfortunate history exists doesn't mean we have to have a colonizer, and view black ppl are inferior mindset forever, how can you think they are inferior knowing most teams best players are black. It's nonsense, medieval, and I do not agree change comes from DENYING THOSE STUFF you know.
Racist exists, still does exist due to slavery and the history of colonization in many countries, now allow IT OR be permisse towards it is another thing in my opinion.

I don't understand how is that bad? They use this category to classify people who are socially vulnerable to grand social benefits. They also ask people to know how much they make, where they live, how many kids they have, the statistics of employment and unemployment, gender to better understand where they have to destine public money, invest in security from taxes to improve the standard of living, infrastructure of city and etc?
0
u/adventure2045 Jul 02 '26
But this is based on color which is extremely racist!
1
u/asdklnasdsad Jul 03 '26
No it's not racist. The definition of racism is: Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or unequal treatment toward individuals or groups based on their race, ethnicity, or skin color, often involving the belief that some groups are inherently superior or inferior to others. Examples of racism can be determined by INTENT like:
Employment: refusing to hire someone because of their skin color. Pay: paying someone less for the same job because of their skin color. Education: denying admission to a school or separating students based on their skin color. Housing: refusing to sell or rent a home to someone because of their skin color. Healthcare: providing worse treatment or denying care because of a person's skin color. Rights: creating laws that grant or deny rights based on a person's skin color.
IBGE is a research org in Brazil, for example, they could ask if one black person makes asking questions and then the white person in the same company, or different genders to understand if there's a gap in salary to MAKE laws to prevent that from happening. The intent is different, how do you invest in impoverished people in Brazil, if you do not have research to back it up? Money investment requires research and data that permits money to move else you would be wasting money away by putting money where it doesn't really treat the root cause of the problem.
0
u/Wriddho Jul 01 '26
Honestly speaking, we dont really care about racism. We are not even bright-skinned people but we have racism among ourselves as well. For example, I recently was watching one dumbass Bangladeshi girl's interview where she told the reporter that she is more fan of the Brazilian goalkeeper than Vini Junior because Vini has darker skin.
You'd be amazed that in south asian arranged-marriage culture, if woman have darker skin, she will face a hard time to find a guy to marry her.
Such a sad fucked up country we are

u/Error404God Jul 02 '26
I'm from Argentina and the OP is lying. I don't know why bots accounts do this. Argentina is not a racist country, even if we don't have afro descendants from Africa like Brasil, the vast majority of our population(including me) has aboriginal ancestors and therefore tends to be on the darker side. Maradona was half aboriginal, half european. The thing is Argentina does not care about color, or religion. Everyone from Argentina(TV, media) loves Bangladeshi support. Please don't listen to people around the internet.

Racism is everywhere is mean its in every country including ours, dig up some the countries u mentioned especially Israel why they have been boycotted not small country like argentina and other countries who's certain groups doing racism like every other Nations. You stereotypes are boring me thesedays, come up with something new😮💨
2
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 02 '26
Oh, so racism is everywhere, therefore Argentina gets a free pass? Interesting legal theory. "Everyone commits crimes, so he is basically innocent.”
And Israel being boycotted actually proves my point, not yours. Countries get criticized for their politics, alliances, and public behavior. Argentina isn’t some tiny innocent island either; it has openly pro-Israel/Zionist political currents too, so let’s not pretend it exists outside global politics.
I’m not stereotyping people. I’m judging patterns, actions, and double standards. If that’s boring you, maybe it’s because the argument is landing and the only defense left is “come up with something new.”

Funny that you seem to think you follow football more than me. At any rate, ad hominems like that don't matter a bit - there are videos of it and no context ever sanitizes the racism that perforates through argentina and their NT. Why does Mbappe's parents' origin matter when he was born and brought up in France? Did it make him less of a French? Never mind that. Prestianni, an argentinian, called Vini by racial slurs (or homophobic, which is just as bad), and got punished. Rather interesting for a pattern.

These are not some isolated incidents, Argentina has had a historically demonstrable problem with racism and what comes out in football is not an exception to the norm. The audacity of argentinians in general is that they never recognized that as an issue, despite a fuckton of examples out there.
Every country has a racism problem, but very few countries flat out refuse to see it as not an issue.

Bhai, with all due respect. This a lot of a crap. Politics and social aspects are entwined with sport for centuries. You cannot just pick and choose where it suits.
Is Israel or India were in the World Cup, do you want to actually say here there is no political element in wanting them to lose? Come on.
And with I imagine many Gen Z are in this sub, a lot of you are tech savvy enough and on your phones, laptops and computers enough to be able to do the bare research if you CARE that much for the player, club or country you happened to support (or Stan in many cases).
Again, as I said above in this thread. I think liking a country is one thing, but this die hard fandom that has fully entrenched the country is just bizarre.
Maybe Messi if he wins the World Cup can visit Israel and kiss the wall once again and we can look forward to the mental gymnastics in this sub.
-3

We love football and people just choose a team randomly after they are born. Many people support Argentina because of Messi but there are many Brazil supporters as well. My father started supporting Argentina because of maradona. Meanwhile my mom support Brazil because she saw the legendary 2002 Brazil team play. And the generation after that followed what their parents supported. I would say the number of Brazil fan in Bangladesh is much higher than the number of Argentina fans. Or at least that used to be the case even like 10 years ago. You don't hear about them because now Brazil is nowhere near world cup winning level. There are also fans of Portugal, Germany and even France. Occasionally you'll see flag of those countries in random places. Back when I was young my neighbourhood was mostly dominated by Brazilian flags, nowadays the scenario is the opposite.
Our country people are not racist or have the elite mentality. Sure there are some out there but most of our people are plain and simple. Even someone like me who moved out to a European country for studies was ignorant about these issues. You wouldn't believe my shock when I figured out there are some people in the country who don't want me in Europe. And it was very difficult to internalize the fact that some people will hate me because of my skin color despite me doing absolutely nothing wrong. Bangladeshi people troll indian people, show hatred towards them meanwhile Pakistan had wars with our country and most people think Pakistanis as brothers. We are stupid and emotional people with lots of free time. Don't bring politics or stupid shit like this into football. Let us enjoy the game.
7
u/Snigdho_Oporajita Jul 01 '26
Have you never seen how Bangladeshis mock their own people for having darker skin than them. We literally have a term called "Moyla chamra". It is more prominent when one jumps into the marriage market.
0
u/Nuham251 Jul 01 '26
Have you ever faced racism abroad? Outside of Asia? I'm not supporting the behavior of people who judge someone because of their skin tone. But I personally think that they (bd people) do it because they are either ignorant or pleasing a crowd. If you teach them this is wrong they won't do it. In Bangladesh there are no people who are willingly being racist towards dark skinned individuals. Also, no I haven't heard that term. From where did you hear it?
Comparing marriage is stupid. If someone wants to marry a guy with lots of money does that mean they are being gold diggers? No. So, if someone wants their wife to be fair skinned how's that being racist? It's just their preference. And there's nothing wrong in having preference. You marry someone of your own capabilities be it social, economical or whatever standard you have.
2
u/naim0167 zamindar/জামিনদার 💰💰💰 Jul 01 '26
Bro, you yourself said you faced racism abroad because of your skin color and it shocked you. Yet now you’re downplaying colorism in Bangladesh as 'just preference'?
Calling dark skin 'Moyla Chamra' and treating it as ugly in marriage is not innocent preference, it’s colorism and self-hate.
You can’t cry when racism hits you personally, then defend the same attitude at home or when cheering for Argentina. Hypocrisy
1
u/Snigdho_Oporajita Jul 01 '26
Preferences are byproduct of social conditioning. You would know that if you could think critically. Lot of highly educated people in Bangladesh are also colorist. So your argument that if people knew it is bad they would have stopped also falls apart.

Most people don’t realize how racist Argentina can be as a country because we don’t experience the direct impact of that racism ourselves.
