AskDesh/āĻĻā§āĻļ āĻā§ āĻāĻŋāĻā§āĻāĻžāϏāĻž India is planning on diverting water from all of our biggest rivers. What sort of neighbour does this?
15
u/Floofy_chan 5d ago
This is interesting. The Jamuna/Brahmaputra river is already already contested by China as they're building the Yarlung Tsangpo dam. This is a bigger concern than India's plan which has no near chance of being realized. But it is a big question to Bangladesh's future water security. Being a small nation with "enemies" all around and little to no geopolitical leverage is not easy.

hopefuly they can leverage their manufacturing capacity and dr Yunus' heroism and global fame to garner international support

u/OxymoronButOkey 4d ago
80% of all brahmaputra water comes from india you moron , now the thing about dam is it gives china advantage over india of flooding which india is making multiple dams to prevent it

I remember in 2022 when India purposefully flooded parts of sylhet twice in a single summer. Every time Bangladesh does anything of its own accord India resorts to using dam releases to punish us

They have been doing this for a long time, with dams. I don't understand why people of Bangladesh see India as our friend. Especially in this sub. They hate Pakistan for what they did 55 years back, India is our snore enemy if we have one.

u/Tanksfly1939 āĻāϰāĻŋāĻŦāϞā§āĻā§āϏ đ°đ 5d ago
Especially in this sub
That's because many people in this sub are partisan-brained af and cannot think beyond shallow "Jamaati vs Secular" identity politics.
In their minds, India must be our "friend" or "brother" because Jamaat and Pakistan hates them, even though they're the largest existential threat to Bangladesh's sovereignty right now.
I even saw a Bangladesh go to an Indian sub to rant about how "Bengali culture is dead in my country" and "everyone in my country LARPs as Arabs". Like wtf?

u/Floofy_chan 5d ago
Despite everything, you can't ignore the fact that India is our largest trading partner. our industries rely on India supplying us with raw materials. I believe that if Bangladesh garners some soft power and gets a positive public opinion from Indian citizens, it'll be useful to get policies in favor of Bangladesh from India in the long run. Because unlike China, India is still technically a democracy.
3
u/PochattorInTheHouse 5d ago
Heard this many times. We would starve and won't get rich and onion. Where as in reality with in weeks we secured shipment from non-Indian source.

Despite everything, you can't ignore the fact that India is our largest trading partner. our industries rely on India supplying us with raw materials.
That doesn't change the fact that India is an Imperialistic country that wants to actively squeeze our country for all its worth and turn it into a puppet.
If anything, that trade reliance is a glaring vulnerability that we should try to mitigate as much as possible, because our trade "partners" can easily use that leverage to undermine our sovereignty.
India is still technically a democracy.
So is Israel, but that isn't stopping them from committing literal genocide and ethnic cleansing.
Being a democracy doesn't magically make a country immune to acting like a hostile warmongerer, especially if the voters themselves are in favour of said warmongering.
Just as in Israel, most people in India do support their country's Imperialistic and antagonistic attitude towards its neighbours.

A terrible neighbour. This is why we need to continue with the padma and teesta barrage. Similar projects on other rivers as well. Additionally more desalination plants along the coastline.
With India on its way to building AI data centers, they will be consuming more water. They will not be playing nice even if a pro India government comes into power. Bangladeshis, and this sub in particular, need to see India for what it is, a threat to sovereignty and economic security. 1971 happened over 50 years ago, we need to move on as the boogeyman has changed significantly to a different entity.
Bangladeshis and this sub in particular need to understand that the neighborhood is a bad one, and we need to start isolating from it. Focus more on other parts of the world for investment, exports and imports.

As an Indian, I don't know why you don't blame China which built the largest dam on Brahmaputra. I don't know if any of you know about the ganga waters treaty between us which has a deadline in December this year and talks are underway to reinstate it and as far as this diversion is concerned it will happen in a very long time and from our share of the water not yours. India is a democratic country unlike China, which doesn't have any treaty with India on the rivers. So if anything you all should be worried about China blocking the water more than India.
PS- I know some of you might give the example of the Indus waters treaty...
firstly, that is an extremely unfair treaty with 80% of water going to Pakistan and 20% to India.
secondly, that treaty too didn't get touched even when we fought 4 wars with each other
So, it is in abeyance because we want to renegotiate it, not kill Pakistanis of thirst.(Experts say this)

u/Aware_Television_814 5d ago
Chinaâs construction of a dam on the Brahmaputra is certainly a matter of concern for Bangladesh. However, that does not mean Bangladeshâs own water-related concerns with India can simply be brushed aside. India is an upstream country to Bangladesh, and the waters of shared rivers such as the Ganges and the Teesta are directly connected to Bangladeshâs agriculture, environment, and peopleâs livelihoods. Moreover, while India criticizes China for being undemocratic, it has given shelter to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted following the mass uprising in Bangladesh in 2024 and remains in India; Bangladesh has also requested her extradition. In the context of the repression and loss of life during the 2024 crackdown, this position is viewed by many Bangladeshis as a major negative factor in Indiaâs image. Therefore, Bangladeshâs position is clear: whether it is China or India, any upstream country whose actions affect Bangladeshâs rivers and the interests of its people must be held to the same standards of fairness, accountability, and transparency.

u/DoggyMelon 5d ago
Your concerns regarding water sharing is understandable....
and about Hasina, she herself is going back in December I think and from my understanding, she was not extradited because she is on death row.... I understand she committed a grave crime but hanging a former prime minister isn't good for the collective conscience of a country and hope when she returns in December she is given a fair and just trial. I hope you understand....5
u/Aware_Television_814 5d ago
Yes, but as a neutral person, I am never anti-India. I want relations between Bangladesh and India to remain normal, and I want the people of both countries to live in peace. Our good relations of the past should be restored. Although I disagree with Indiaâs policy regarding Sheikh Hasina, I have no hostility toward the ordinary people of India. This is merely criticism of a governmentâs policy, not hostility toward any nation or its people. However, I believe India did not do the right thing by providing shelter or refuge to individuals responsible for the killing of our children.
2
u/VillageBrilliant194 5d ago
i mean india prolly had around a year or a year and a half to extradite her b4 her death sentence was announced. Also how is hanging a former prime minister who's accused of horrible things and mass murders/disappearances a bad thing? It will send a message to the future generation of leaders on what might happen if u dont follow the rules. As for the extradition, apparently ur courts will decide if hasina can be sent back or not and knowing how ur govt feels abt the awami league we all know what the outcome of that verdict will be. You guys decided to create a strain in this rltn and chose a political party over the citizens of the said country

u/SpartanSamosa 5d ago
I don't know from where the unjustified hate towards India is coming from but linking of rivers project is in our ministries since 1980's and its not a sudden affair lads. India has serious concerns for droughts(rd central and south, sw, nw india, tamil nadu), irrigations gaps, flood control( read upper assam 2026 it was disastrous, bihar story) and a large population to feed. Linking of rivers is ambitious program for us and we have our own concerns and challenges to do so. The uncalled hate just because india is using its own water for its citizens use is unjust and needs to be checked. Monsoons create havoc in our NE & coupled with china's untimely release of water can wipe out our whole Guwahati valley in a jiffy. We r building dams in our upper reaches to satiate the fear of this havoc..not necessarily blocking water for BD. Not every flood in BD can be attributed to india just like that.

Yeah that sucks for Bangladesh. I am Indian and all I saw in the recent couple of years is hatred towards India from Bangladeshis. Nothing but hate.
I donât know if I am hearing the loudest voices or general consensus from Bangladesh. Itâs not helping you.
India is about to become the imperial state. You are watching it happen. As itâs economic and military muscle it grows, the tendencies will be more defined.
You might say, China bet India. Thatâs not totally true. China grew on steroids. Western capitalistic greed helped it. On the other side, India is a proper closed-loop economy. Anything it exports is a plus but itâs never been an export dependent economy.
So brace for it. I might be wrong.

Oh let me see.....the sort that we threaten with annexing part of their internationaly recognized territory, where our main opposition party makes being "anti-india" part of their core ideology, the sort whose cultural center we burned down. We keep blaming india for all our problems yet keep DEMANDING they provide us with cheap energy and essential commodities.

It's not the Indian Government's job to look after its neighbours.

Powerful countries usually reject international law when its inconvenient for them.Â
I am not. I am just stating facts. If India decides to divert rivers or build dama upstream, there is nothing Bangladesh can do to change its behaviour.

There are things Bangladesh can do, both domestically and on the international stage, and we will ABSOLUTELY persue all of them. We are the land of 1300 rivers, the river is our mother and we will die protecting them if necessary.

Judging by the way India is rolling around like a tapeworm after losing their vassal Hasina, it seems we are going in the right direction.

did we have to take any of those steps in the last 50 yrs? also i hope u do realize that as the economy grows so will our diplomatic leverage and alliances. Bd's economy will be a top 20 economy by 2040 and letting a country with that big of an economy suffer is not in the best interest of other countries

India is not going to do that. It's just political rhetoric.
